14: Until the stars rain down from the heavens

Fourteenth Prompt: The stars

||∞'°••~•^°^••~Ω~••^°^•~••°’∞||

Susan looked out of the window. The sky was dark and thousands of stars sparkled in it like diamonds on velvet.

She remembered the Narnian sky. It was different from the sky in this world. The constellations that were here weren't there.

Here, in this world, were constellations like Cassiopeia or Orion.

But in Narnia weren't any specific constellations. It depended on when and where you were there to look in the sky.

Susan remembered one night she had searched for Lucy. They hadn't been in Narnia that long.

Eventually, she found her sister outside of Cair Paravel, sitting in the gardens and looking into the sky.

Susan sat down next to her. After a few minutes, she asked:„What are you doing here this late?“

„I couldn't sleep, so I went outside to look at the stars. The nights are so peaceful here“, Lucy answered.

Susan smiled.
„Yeah, they are.“

Lucy stared into the sky for another few moments, before turning to Susan and pointing into the sky.

„Do you see those constellations?“

„Which ones?“

„Next to the bright star!“

„You mean the four...columns?“

„Yes! Don't you think they look a bit like us? Or, our thrones?“

Susan chuckled but then hesitated.
„Well, a little bit...they do“, she said quietly.

The one on the far left was smaller than the one next to it, which was the biggest. The one to the right was the second biggest and the one next to it was the smallest.

Just like the order in which the four kings and queens had their thrones.

Edmund, then Peter, then Susan, then Lucy.

„What a funny coincidence“, Susan said.

„I don't think it's a coincidence“, Lucy said.

„What do you think then?“, Susan asked.

„I think this constellation stands for us. It...represents us. I mean, there was a prophecy about us. And in some stories, when a fate is foretold, it says: It was written in the stars. And Aslan said on the day of our coronation: May your wisdom grace us until the stars rain down from the heavens.
To me, this means, that we are written in the stars until we are not anymore “, Lucy explained.

Susan looked from Lucy to the starry sky.

„Yeah. That could be.“

Susan stared sadly into the night sky.
She would never again listen to Lucy's theories of the stars.
Lucy was gone. And so were those precious conversations the two sisters had had.

Until the stars rain down from the heavens.

Susan would have been the first one to fall.
She forgot Narnia. She forgot Aslan.
She forgot her fate.

But Lucy, who watched as the stars rained down from the sky, and remembered at this exact point this same conversation with her sister, noticed that Susan's starry column was the last one to fall.

The last one to arrive here, in Aslan's country.

But it did fall, it did arrive.

And so would Susan.
