Chapter nineteen

"You're coming with me, Letty"
I was about to say yes but "Now, you can fight me on this, but you will lose. As will anyone else who tries to stop you from getting in this car" I rolled my eye at him "I was going to say okay!" I stood up and got in the car.

Klaus has set up a dinner table is set up in the courtyard to celebrate his return to leadership over New Orleans and his repossession of the Abbatoir compound from Marcel.

The vampire army, including Marcel and his closest friends, are seated around the table, and Klaus and I are seated at each end. Klaus calls for everyone's attention to give a speech by tapping his glass with his fork

Marcel, it's been long since I've seen him. And yet I can't talk to him.

"Let us begin with a toast to our shared gift: immortality. After a thousand years, one might expect life to be less keenly felt, for its beauties and its sorrows do diminish with time. But, as vampires, we feel more deeply than humans could possibly imagine" Klaus gestures toward a group of waiters and waitresses to have them join them at the table, one for each guest.

Klaus continues his speech while the servants slit their wrists with knives, filling the cups with blood for the vampires.

Klaus raises his glass in a toast to the others. "To my city, my home again. May the blood never cease to flow."
Marcel lifts his glass in return "And the party never end!"

"I understand that some of you may have questions regarding the recent change in leadership, and I invited you here tonight to assure you that you are not defeated. No, my intentions moving forward are to celebrate what we have. What Marcel, in fact, took and built for this true community of vampires" Diego interrupts and asks about me. I can see Marcel and Nik get tightened up.

"Had you'd let me finish, Diego, you would know that there is, of course, one further matter I would like to address" Klaus walks over to the other end of the table where I was sitting.

"As many of you know, the girl is carrying my child. Consequently, I trust you will all pay her the appropriate respect. However, I understand that some of you are concerned by this vicious rumour that I intend to use the blood of our child to create hybrids. I assure you I do not. It appears I will have to earn your trust. Very well. We'll eliminate the root of your anxiety. You see, how can I sire any hybrids if there are no more werewolves alive in the Bayou to turn?"

I turn my head towards Klaus "What? no!" He ignores me "So-- eat, drink, and be merry. And, tomorrow, I suggest you have yourselves a little wolf hunt. Go ahead, have fun. Kill them all!"

Downstairs, I walked alone down the stairs toward the side door of the compound as I tried to sneak out into the French Quarter. I look around to see if I am being watched, but before I can go anywhere, Diego cuts in front of me. He asks where am I going but his neck gets broken in between by Elijah.

"You shouldn't be here! He has guys watching me" Hayley was behind him. She fastened her steps and hugged me tightly. "H. No, you don't have to worry about me. I'm fine. I've been deemed under protection by the almighty Klaus. It's the werewolves who need help. He ordered a wolf hunt as some jacked-up peace offering to Marcel's crew. You have to help them and above all, they are your family and my child's"

Rebekah looks at me with disgust "Out in the Bayou? Do we look like a bloody vampire rescue squad? I think you should be grateful we came to save you!" I rolled my eyes at her "Listen. Rebekah. All my life, I've wanted a family. I can't let Klaus order other people's families to be killed. You wanna help me? Help those people. Help Hayley's family. Please."

Klaus is reading a book in the living room when Hayley and I walk in. Hayley shouted at him "Those werewolves you ordered killed, that's my family."

"Not for long, love. I mean, this so-called family of yours, they haven't done you much good, have they? You said it yourself-- they abandoned you and left you alone. Now it's simply your turn to do the same."

Hayley got more annoyed. "Maybe they had their reasons" Klaus closes the book angrily and gets up. "Yes, well, I have a reason too, Wolfie. If the werewolves are dead, then the vampires have less desire to kill Scar. I am trying to keep her safe. Not that you appreciate the effort."

I took a deep breath and sat at his place. "And as soon as she has this baby, what happens to her then?" Hayley questioned Nik's love for me. Big one Girl.

"Hey, you both. Shut up."

Klaus says nothing and looks both guilty and awkward. After a moment, Hayley gulps nervously and leaves.

Upstairs, Davina is unpacking her things in her new bedroom. I went in to visit her and found her searching through her boxes for something. "What are you looking for?" I asked curiously.

"My violin. It must be left in the attic"

"So go get it!"

"I can't. It's not safe for me out there"

"Funny, I was under the impression everyone was afraid of you"

"The witches are after me"

I got too confused with her words. "You mean that crazy witch, Agnes? Yeah, she tried to kill me, too. The thing is, she's dead. Rebekah killed her" Davina shakes her head in disbelief "But.. Agnes was the last living Elder. If she's dead, then I'm safe. Marcel would've told me."

I shrugged my shoulders and said, "Maybe he didn't wanna lose his secret weapon against the witches?" She got suspicious "You're lying" I looked at her with raised eyebrows "Why would I lie to you? A kid that is a prisoner in my house?" With a bit of anger and hurt she replied "Because you want something from me. Everyone does" I rolled my eyes at the stupid scared kid "I've everything I want. Maybe but I'm happy and if I don't have anything my boy will get me or else I'm quite capable. So don't think I'm Marcel. I might be useful to you in future but you don't trust me easily. I can see that cause you have been betrayed. A lot of times" I turned around and walked out.

Klaus was in the parlour of the plantation house, playing the piano as I sat beside him. He was waiting for his siblings to return. After a moment, Rebekah walks into the room but doesn't notice Klaus right away. She calls Elijah out and complains about the bog stink on her. "Serves you right, for your pathetic attempt to undermine my rule."

Elijah walks in rolling his eyes "How delightfully democratic of you" and he throws a ring towards us. "Do you recognize it? Perhaps you don't. It has been a thousand years since you last saw it grace our mother's hand. The ring was in possession of one of the very wolves whose extinction you just ordered. So, naturally, I questioned him. He spoke of a legend. A legend that long ago, a chief of theirs had fathered a child to a very powerful witch. Their mythology further states that this child, a son, was later transformed into something this clan had never before seen. Something werewolf and vampire" They found Nik's real family. My eyes glowed up in excitement.

"Nik, we're trying to make amends. We found remnants of your family. The bloodline of your true father. And we saved them from being slaughtered at the hands of the vampires you command" Rebekah said as Elijah continued "Niklaus, your ambitions have come before this family for far too long. Niklaus, I beg you please, come home" Nik got frustrated "What home? This pathetic substitute? You see, despite all your doubts, and all your attempts to thwart me, I've reclaimed our true home. I took back the entire city."

Elijah as always didn't back off even after Nik's anger-filled words "You have the audacity to boast of your victory when the mother of your child remains your prisoner?"

Why am I getting dragged into this? "She is MY girlfriend and I don't care what you think about how I keep her and if you are concerned about the wolf you can have her brother" and he walks out. Leaving all of us sad and defeated.

Klaus is about to walk up the stairs when he notices Elijah nearby. I stood near the railings to watch them.

"Haven't you had your fill of telling me all the ways I've disappointed you, Elijah?"

"Well, there is something important we neglected to discuss. I accused you of having ulterior motives regarding the child. I was wrong. I'm sorry."

"I imagine that must have been hard for you to say."

"You don't make it easy to love you, brother."

"And yet, you're obstinate in your desire to do so. When you're ready, should you be so inclined, both you and Rebekah are welcome to join me here. It is, after all, our family home."

Klaus smiles and leaves Elijah downstairs in the courtyard. Maybe we can be one big happy family
