niola waits for matt to open the front door as he stands on the sturniolo's porch. it's raining and the porch does little to keep her dry. niola is covering rayne with her rain coat, holding her close to her chest. since niola is using her coat to cover rayne, she's without any protect. which is resulting in niola getting soaked.

suddenly, the door swings open and matt is standing in the doorway. his eyes widen at the sight of them both standing in the rain, dripping with water.

niola's curls are flattened and frizzy, making her feel ugly. she spent a lot of time on her hair this morning before school and all of that preparation went right down the drains.

"i didn't know it was raining," matt says, grabbing niola by the wrist and yanking her inside. "if i had known, i wouldn't have made you wait."

"too late now," niola says, setting rayne down onto the carpeted entryway. matt quickly takes her coat from her and hangs it up onto a hook near the door.

niola sits on the ground, untying her shoes and then removing them from her feet. as she stands back up, matt crouches down to the floor and waves at rayne with a small grin. rayne sees him and giggles, waddling over to him and engulfing him into a tiny hug.

out of nowhere, heavy footsteps come running toward where niola, matt, and rayne are. they all look up and notice who the steps belong to. nick and chris rush up to the trio, swarming rayne. chris gives her a small fist bump, making her smile. then, nick grabs her and spins her around in a circle.

"if you make her puke, you're cleaning it." niola tells nick, making him automatically set her back down.

"sorry, sorry, sorry," nick apologizes to niola quickly, looking at her with a genuine expression of regret. "sorry if i came on too strong. i just—"

before nick can finish his explanation, matt grabs niola by the hand and drags her away from the chaos. he brings her into the living room and makes her sit down on the nearest couch.

"wait here — i'll be right back with all the supplies we need for the project." matt tells her. and without even waiting for her to agree, matt turns on his heel and walks away.

niola sits on the cushion awkwardly. she can hear nick and chris playing with rayne in the other room. the sound of her sister laughing warms her heart, assuring her that maybe this wasn't such a bad idea.

niola sprawls out across the couch as she looks around the room, taking in her surroundings. the triplet's house is much more comfortable than her own. something about the atmosphere makes her feel safe whereas her house always felt too empty.

"okay," she looks up and sees matt walking back into the living room, a computer and a few books in each of his hands. "what topic do you want to do this on?"

"i honestly don't give a shit." niola says with a shrug as matt plops down onto the cushion beside her. "we are equally clueless on all of it seeing as we aren't ever taught anything."

matt chuckles, "you're right."

for the next few minutes, they discuss ideas of would be the easiest to work on. after a while, they settle on a topic and begin their research.

matt looks up a few different websites, searching for any information that could be useful to them. meanwhile, niola is flipping through the pages of textbooks, skimming through the words to find something remotely useful.

suddenly, a light melody begins to play from the small computer speakers. niola looks over at matt and he just nods his head along with the beat. she waits for him to notice that she's staring at him, but he doesn't. niola takes this as a rare opportunity to throw a pencil at him.

the pencil hits him in the side of the head and he pauses the music to look at her with a glare.

"what the hell are you doing?" she asks him.

"what am i doing?" matt repeats, throwing the pencil back at her but niola dodges it. "you're the one who just attacked me!"

"quit being such a baby." niola rolls her eyes. "it was just a pencil."

matt is about to say something back to her, but suddenly miss elsher's words rang throughout this mind. "i paired you guys together, hoping this will make you guys quit with this childish rivalry and possibly even become friends." she has said.

he decides that if he ever wants niola to see him as someone other than an enemy, he needs to get along with her.

matt scoffs, closing the computer and turning his full attention toward her. "just explain why you tried to kill me."

"that dull ass pencil couldn't kill you even if i tried." niola tells him with a shrug. "and i threw it to get your attention."

"you couldn't just call my name like a normal person?"

"this was much more fun." she says with a mocking smile spreading across her face. despite the smile being sarcastic, matt finds himself admiring it — taken aback by her beauty. he shakes the thoughts away and redirects his attention to the task at hand.

"why did you need to get my attention?" he asks smoothly. the calm way he's speaking surprises niola and she feels like something is off.

"i can't study with your music playing so loudly." she tells him. "turn it off."

all of his calm composure comes crashing down. he glares at her, unpausing the music and turning the volume up. she starts yelling at him, but he holds the speaker to his ear, making her voice inaudible.

he turns the volume all the way up and can tell by niola's expression that what she's saying to him is definitely not child-friendly. she notices that he's looking at her and she holds up her middle finger, flipping him off. he closes his eyes.

niola curses under her breath, lunging at him. she tackles him, pinning him down onto the cushion of the couch before she takes the computer. while she is trying to figure out how to pause the music, matt flips them over so he's pinned her to the couch instead.

they both breathe heavily, niola laying across the cushion underneath him as he sits on top of her. niola had managed to pause the music before she was attacked, making the room silent. niola stares at him, not yet processing the position they're in. he stares back down at her, not wanting to move.

out of nowhere, niola erupts into a fit of laughter. she brings her hand to her face, covering her mouth as she laughs.

matt blinks a few times, listening to the sound. he's never heard her laugh before — seeing as before this project was assigned to them, they've never said anything to each other except for insults.

"what the fuck?" niola and matt both turn and look at who the voice belongs to. nick.

he, chris, and rayne are standing in the doorway, watching in shock as their brother sits on top of his crush. slowly, chris brings his hand to rayne's face, covering her eyes.

niola's cheeks turn to a shade of dark red before she shoves the brunette boy off of her. matt takes the hint and backs off of her, putting his hands up in defense.

niola stands up from the couch and walks over to the group standing in the doorway. she takes her sister into her arms before muttering a quick, "i gotta go." under her breath. with that, she slips on her shoes, grabs her coat, and hurries out of the door.

"explain." nick and chris say in unison once niola has left.
