3rd Person's POV
Returning home from his morning run, Sam hears a knock at his door. He opens the door to see Steve, Natasha, and Sammie.
"Hey, man."
Sam smiles lightly while kind of confused.
Steve grimaces, "I'm sorry about this. We need a place to lay low."
Sam looks at them in shock, "Uhh..."
Sammie sighs, "How do we put this so you can understand?..."
Natasha rolls her eyes, "Everyone we know is trying to kill us."
Sammie looks over as if she's about to say something then nods, "Yeah what she said."
Sam pauses a moment before replying, "Not everyone."
Sam let's them enter. Later as Steve and Natasha are cleaning up, Steve notices Natasha looking sad and thoughtful.
"You okay?"
Natasha nods, "Yeah.
"What's going on?"
"When I first joined SHIELD, I thought I was going straight. But I guess I just traded in the KGB for HYDRA. I thought I knew whose lies I was telling, but... I guess I can't tell the difference anymore."
"There's a chance you might be in the wrong business."
Natasha smiles faintly, "I owe you."
"It's okay."
Natasha sighs, "If it was the other way around, and it was down to me to save your life, and you be honest with me, would you trust me to do it?"
Steve nods, "I would now. And I'm always honest."
"Well, you seem pretty chipper for someone who just found out they died for nothing."
"Well, I guess I just like to know who I'm fighting."
Silence passes between the two before Steve looks out the window at Sammie who is sitting on a wood swing seat outside.
"How is she?"
"Not good. Not horrible."
Silence passes for a minute throughout the room.
Natasha sighs and looks at Steve with sad eyes, "Steve, we both saw the winter soldier kill Howard Stark... we cannot tell Sammie. Otherwise it will be New York all over again. Maybe even worse. We need to be a team right now more than ever... if we tell her she will go on her own and make it a mission to kill the soldier by herself. That can't happen."
"I know... I was thinking the same thing. Once we find whoever this Winter Soldier is we will take him down then tell her."
"Steve she needs someone. She needs you more than ever right now. And you know you need her."
Steve opens his mouth to ask something when Sam interrupts, "I made breakfast. If you guys...eat that sort of thing."
Later as they are sat in Sam's kitchen, they try to make a game plan.
"So, the question is: who in SHIELD could launch a domestic missile strike?" Natasha asks.
Steve thinks back in his mind then the perfect person comes to thought, "Pierce."
"Who happens to be sitting on top of the most secure building in the world."
Steve frowns, "But he's not working alone, Zola's algorithm was on the Lemurian Star."
"So was Jasper Sitwell."
"So, the real question is: how do the two most wanted people in Washington kidnap a SHIELD officer in broad daylight?"
Sam speaks up, "The answer is, you don't."
He drops a file in front of Steve.
"What's this?"
Sam shrugs smiling, "Call it a resume."
Natasha picks up a photo of Sam with his para-rescue team, "Is this Bakhmala? The Khalid Khandil mission, that was you."
She looks over at Steve frowning, "You didn't say he was a para-rescue."
Steve looks at the photo of Sam with his colleague, "Is this Riley?"
Sam nods, "Yeah."
"I heard they couldn't bring in the choppers because of the RPGs. What did you use, a stealth chute?"
"No. These."
He hands Steve the file, Steve opens it and reads it, "I thought you said you were a pilot."
"I never said pilot." Sam smiles.
Steve shakes his head, "I can't ask you to do this, Sam. You got out for a good reason."
"Dude, Captain America needs my help. There's no better reason to get back in."
Steve sighs then agrees, "Where can we get our hands on one of these things?"
"The last one is at Fort Meade, behind three guarded gates and a twelve-inch steel wall."
Steve looks at Natasha who shrugs her shoulders, "Shouldn't be a problem. Hey where is Sammie?"
Sam glances behind him, "She's still outside. You want me to go get her?"
Steve sighs, "Uh no I got it."
Steve throws down the file on the table then opens the back door shutting it after he exits the house. He walks over to the swing chair Sammie is sitting on then clears his throat. She looks up at him in surprise.
"Can I sit?"
"Yeah yeah go ahead." She moves over slightly letting him sit down beside her.
The swing chair is so small that their legs are touching causing tingles to rush up and down their body.
"It's beautiful out here." Steve says trying to make conversation.
"Yep really nice." Sammie says smiling lightly.
"You okay?"
"I'm fine Steve... I promise."
Steve looks over to see Sammie staring at him. He is instantly reminded of how beautiful she is. Her intense deep eyes that pull you in. Her gorgeous face covered in light freckles. Her charming smile. Within a second, the two have gotten closer then ever like two magnets attracting. Steve jumps up from the swing and clears his throat.
"Um we're leaving in a few... so I just wanted to say be ready." Steve smiles lightly.
"Alright. Thanks I'll be in soon. Give me like two minutes."
Steve nods as Sammie starts to swing ignoring him. Steve sighs and turns around then walks back into the house. Sam and Natasha stand up and look at him hopeful.
"How'd it go? Did you talk to her?"
"No."
"Why not?" Natasha groans.
"What am I supposed to say to her? Hey I know you broke my heart but wanna try this again?"
"Steve she loves you and you know you love her. I'm only asking you about people to date so you realize that everytime you say no you fall more in love with her. You two need to stop being so stubborn and talk. I swear I'm gonna choke both of you."
Natasha swiftly moves past him angrily as she leaves out the house. The two guys watch as she sits next to Sammie and they talk. Within seconds they smile and hug.
"It's like he doesn't even want to look at me Nat. I know I hurt him... but I didn't mean to. I thought by leaving I would keep him safe. Of course he was safe from me physically but emotionally I broke him. I don't know what to do... what to say. I said sorry but sorry doesn't make up for a year of hiding. I just want him to forgive me. If he does then I'll be okay."
Sam and Steve look at each other confused then look at the chair where Natasha just was sitting, and see a small radio.
"What about if he moves on?"
"I would literally die."
The two laugh, "I would be happy that he was happy... but I want him to be happy with me. I just don't want my powers to kill him. I'm scared that one day I won't be able to control myself and my powers will take over again like in New York. I can not live with myself if I do something like that again."
"Well tell him that. Tell him that's why you left. Explain it to him."
"He wouldn't listen. I lost my chance. If he can't even look at me or sit by me, then he doesn't want me. End of story."
The guys watch as Sammie gets up and walks inside the house. She doesn't look at either of them as she walks to the bathroom.
Natasha comes up behind them and sighs, "And my job is done."
