018: That Was A Miracle

9-1-1 SEASON TWO
EPISODE 14: BROKEN

───────────────────

It had been a few weeks since everything had happened. Maddie and Chimney were both back at home, safe, okay in a sense which was a relief.

But it has also been weeks of Buck and Hen worrying over them.

Hen insisting Chimney needs therapy and he completely disagrees and Buck thinking Maddie is moving too fast since almost dying from her ex-husband.

Adalynn pulled her curls back, tying them into a low ponytail, a few loose strands framing her face while her eyes scan across the row of seats of children listening to Bobby speak— Bobby taking it rather seriously. Buck and Eddie both standing at his side dressed in their turnout gear. Like professional mannequins for Bobby's speech.

"Don't panic, because panic can be more dangerous than flames, toxic fumes, or a sucking chest wound" Bobby explained taking a few steps, glancing back at Buck and Eddie who rolled a TV forward.

Buck glanced her way. Maybe it was purposeful maybe it wasn't but his eyes almost always seemed to find her.

He saw her leaned against the firetruck that classic Adalynn upside down smile on her face as she holds a thumbs up and a small nod. He noticed her nose crinkled slightly when she lightly laughed at one of the kids.

But just as quickly as he looked her way he quickly turned his gaze back. His eyes land on Eddie for a moment, thankful his attention was elsewhere.

Adalynn's gaze shifts back to Bobby as he continues, her arms folded over her chest "All you need is three numbers. Can anyone tell me what they are?"

Almost immediately the crowd of kids shouted back in almost perfect unison"9-1-1!"

Bobby nods "yes, now does anyone know what happens when you dial those numbers?" He points to the boy with his hand raised a smile forming when recognizing the boy. "Harry Grant"

"They call a firetruck" he states proudly

Adalynn smiles softly before walking off, hand running over her hair and not even noticing the pair of eyes who watched her walk away.

Adalynn reached into her pocket just as she felt the faint vibration seeing the caller ID.

Mom

She hesitated for a moment before answering it, holding it to her ear "Hey Mama"

"Adalynn, I didn't catch you at a bad time did I?"

The Diaz glanced over her shoulder, her gaze landing on Buck who was crouched down beside the group of kids, gesturing toward the ladder with a bright grin on his face. One kids eyes widened dramatically as if he was in a candy store when Buck pointed up and mimicked what it was like to climb in a fire.

Adalynn couldn't help the faint smile that tugged at the corners of her lips before she shrugged "Nah, it's all good. Just doing some firefighter education training" a breathy laugh left her lips.

Helena's faint laugh was heard before she continued "teaching them not to start fires?"

Adalynn frowned, head tilting "something like that." Adalynn's fingers tugged a loose curl behind her ears "how have things been? With you, pops?"

Helena quirked a brow "I was calling to check up on you, Mija. To make sure you're sleeping, eating... living?"

Adalynn took a deep breath as she turned and leaned against the cool wall. She was silent for a moment "I'm trying" she admitted, lips pursing "things have just been..... hectic lately"

"I was worried, you know?" Helena began. Adalynn could hear the faint clatter of her cleaning up dishes "you never answered me when it was Makayla's birthday but Eddie had filled me in"

Adalynns brows drew together "you— yeah sorry" she quickly corrected herself because her mother knowing that she didn't even know she texted would be more catastrophic then not answering her. "It's just been a lot going on"

Helena hummed "I know" she said gently "But you do know you're not alone. You have your brother, your family, friends. There are people who care about you"

Adalynn didn't say anything for a moment. Her fingers toying with a loose thread to her pants. Her eyes going back into Buck who was showing a little girl how to work the firehouse nozzle, his laughter mixing with hers.

Her gaze flicked back towards the ground "yeah, I know" she murmured.

"Well, I suppose I'll let you go" Helena said gently. Adalynn might not be biologically hers but she knew that girl like the back of her hand, like she was hers biologically. But that never mattered to Helena— or any of them for that matter. "Take care of yourself, Okay?"

"I will, I promise"

"Te quiero"

Adalynn smiled softly "Te quiero más" she lowered the phone just as the line went dead. Sliding it back into her pocket.

She exhaled slowly as she moved forward, picking up a fallen turnout coat. An extra that was used for Bobby's demonstration, Adalynn folding it over her arm. Her eyes just catching Buck as he lifted a boy up to pretend to drive the truck. Buck beaming like it was the best part of the week.

Adalynn's lips twitched into that familiar crooked smile again before she shook her head walking towards the turnout room to put the coat back.

The station had quieted for now. The sound of kids now long gone and cleared out. The demonstration equipment but away into its rightful place. Most of the crew had filtered into either in the apparatus bay or the common area.

Adalynn rounded the corner leaving the turnout room after placing the last box in there. Her gaze locked on the floor until she glanced up, nearly walking straight into Buck.

He paused mid-step, eyes lifting into that familiar flicker of surprise. Adalynn caught his expression as she smirked.

"You know" she said lightly, hands resting on her hips as she looked him over "in my opinion you made a very convincing mannequin earlier"

Buck blinked "mannequin?"

"Yeah" she nodded, head tilting as she stepped past him turning to walk backwards her tone teasing "you blended in so well with the crowd of kids, I almost thought you were part of the display. Just standing there, real professional— until you weren't of course"

His mouth tugged into a crooked grin "Oh, C'mon—"

"I'm serious" she cut in. But the way her tone was she clearly wasn't. She inhaled sharply "I would say you could have a future career standing in department windows but you'd crack too easily"

Buck stepped closer, probably too close. His eyes squinting down at her almost like he was shocked she was saying this "well, for the record, I didn't see you doing much educating"

Adalynn's brows raised, her arms crossing over her chest "Please, I was moral support" she shot back smoothly "you think thumbs ups give themselves out?"

Their banter hung in the quiet air between them — playful, but loaded. It always was.

They had rules, or at least they used to. No labels, no public displays, no one at the station knowing. But moments like this? They blurred lines that were already dangerously thin.

He was standing closer now, his eyes dropping briefly to her mouth before flicking back up to her eyes.

Adalynn's gaze drifted to the hallway behind them. No one. Just shadows and the hum of distant chatter.

"I think you liked the attention," she said, voice a little softer now, less teasing. Her fingers brushed his turnout coat lightly, like she didn't even realize she was doing it.

"I think you're deflecting," Buck murmured, his voice low. His hand brushed hers, deliberate.

She didn't move away. In fact, she leaned in just slightly, lips parting as if she might say something—do something. Her gaze flicked up to meet his, full of intent.

And then—

Click.

A sudden darkness swept through the hallway as the power flickered. The lights cut out for a moment, plunging them into shadows. Then the flickered back on.

Then the station alarm blared to life, the overhead lights flashing red casting a faint hue onto them.

Adalynn turned as the two jog down the hall stopping when seeing Bobby and the others file down the stairs.

Bobby's voice echoing around them over the still blaring alarm "Okay everybody! We are in tactical emergency mode. That means we will not be at the station today"

Adalynn slings her radio across her chest as Bobby continues while walking towards the rigs, everyone following "We will be driving all around the district to make sure that we are ready for anything that comes our way"

Hen quirked a brow while adjusting the button on her sleeve "Cap, you do realize we work here right. We're trained professionals not fifth graders"

Adalynn snorts as she follows Eddie into the rig. The others following not long after.

Adalynn adjusted the headset as she glanced towards Eddie who spoke "Hey, Cap, have you ever scene a breakdown like this before?"

"Once" Bobby replied looking over his shoulder "in St.Paul. Blizzard took out the power grid around the call center and backup generator"

Hen laugh "I've been through like three of these. I'm surprised they don't happen more often. The way the city funds us, the department's held together by chewing gum and spit"

Adalynns brows raised as she points at hen "Oh— that's a good dig"

Bucks brows pull together as he holds up his hands "Hey, someone I like these old trucks"

"Okay grandpa" Adalynn uttered out leaning back in the seat. Buck shooting her a look.

Eddie hummed "I like them when they run" he tilted his head, nose scrunched slightly.

"118 Engine and Rescue, please report your location."

Bobby reached for his radio "we're on Granville, approaching Miracle Mile District from the west"

"Please proceed to 9590 Hillcrest. Cross street is Medows. Vehicle collided with 58 year old cyclist, Male"

"Copy, 118 Battalion seven en route"

The lights and sirens flicked on as they followed dispatches instructions. Coming to a rather quick stop when a different firetruck shot through the intersection. Bobby got out first walking towards Athena who was barking orders at the different fire station already there. Radioing it to dispatch and getting back into the rig. Driving off once again.

Adalynn wished she could say it was a less hectic day— this just being the start but that definitely wasn't the case. Some quick fixes, other first responders on a scene— it was like cat and mouse on who was actually going to get the call. Plus listening to dispatch while trying to work isn't exactly an easy task.

After mild confusion and showing up to an empty lot they arrive at the high rise where a woman was currently in labor.

The each quickly file into the building the husband looking at them with wide eyes "where the hell have you been?"

"We are fighting a system outage, sir. We apologize for the delay." Bobby just slightly motioned his head towards the Wilson woman "Hen you're up. Eddie start fluids"

The man looked between them like they had three head "what— we, we can't just have the baby here in the lobby. That's not how this is supposed to happen"

"Roger, this is pretty much the way it's happened throughout human history" The woman said before yelling slightly, gripping her husband's hand harder.

Hen leaned forward slightly, her voice soft "Hi, I'm Hen, what's your name"

The woman took a deep breath before she speaks "Sonia. 39 weeks pregnant. 38 years old, which makes me a geriatric pregnancy" she pants slightly before shaking her head "god, I hate that word"

Adalynn smiled softly as she moved one of the pillows "The word doesn't matter because you're still going to get a baby"

Sonia smiles brightly "I can't believe I'm finally gonna meet him.. here... in the lobby" she laughs weakly.

Hen nods slowly "that's alright, you're doing great but on this next contraction, we're gonna push, okay, Sonia?"

Adalynn watched the woman's smile drop as she pauses for a moment. "Sonia?" Hen questions.

The once face filled with pure joy and happiness had now been replaced with fear "there's something wrong, with the baby"

Hen shakes her head "no, the baby's fine you'll see for yourself in just a minute"

Sonia shook her head frantically "No, no this was a mistake. All of it" Adalynn shared a confused look with Hen who seemed just as clueless as she was "Roger was right to panic. Look, we can't do this— I— I can't do this, I shouldn't have this child"

"No, no, no, Sonia, look at me, Look at me!" Hen's tone was sharp but not in an angry way in a way that just said listen. "All you gotta do is push"

Sonia glanced Adalynn's way as she nods encouragingly taking her other hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.

A beat passed. Sonia's lip trembled, and then—her expression changed. Not into confidence, but resolve.

"Okay," she whispered.

Hen nodded. "Alright. Contraction's starting. Big push. Now."

Sonia cried out as the next wave hit. She bore down, fingers clutching Adalynn's and Roger's hands like lifelines. Hen kept her voice steady, counting her through it.

"You're doing great, Sonia. Baby's crowning—one more big push!"

Another cry—longer this time. And then—

The sound of a newborn's cry pierced through the lobby, loud and urgent and alive.

Hen moved quickly, wrapping the baby in a blanket. Claps from bystanders came from around the lobby.

Hen smiled brightly as she spoke "Now I'm going to take you to the warmest place on earth" she began to move towards the woman to hand off the baby to Sonia Adalynn following her gaze to the woman but instantly the smiles dropped.

Sonia was barely breathing, her eyes looked distant. Adalynn held her arms out "Hen, give me the baby"

Hen carefully passed it off to her Adalynn standing slowly her one hand on the baby's head as she slowly bounced in attempts to soothe the still crying newborn.

"What's happening— what's wrong?" Roger panicked out as he stood. Buck trying to calm the man down but he wasn't listening "what's wrong"

"Roger, listen!" Buck stood in front of the man "she is in the best hands, okay?" He shared a quick glance with Adalynn who still held the baby, Buck pointing in her direction "but right now, he needs yours"

Adalynn took a few quick steps forward. Her brows raising as if silently asking if he was ready to hold his son to which he quickly nodded Adalynn carefully handed him off before rushing back over to Hen and Sonia.

She crouched back down in the ground looking at Hen "what's going on?"

Eddies lips formed a line as he took the stethoscope out of his ears "blood pressure went off a cliff"

Hen looked to Bobby. "Cyanosis"

A pin dropping would be louder than the silence filling the room beside the newborns cries. Roger noticed this, the shift "can someone please tell me what's happening here?"

Adalynn inhaled sharply, pressing two fingers to Sonia's neck. "There's no pulse!"

"She's in Cardiac arrest. I'm starting compressions" Hen stated as she immediately began pumping steady rhythm onto Sonia's chest.

"Okay let's get her transported to L.A General now" Bobby stated to the team as Adalynn rose to her feet.

Buck looked at the man "Cap, we're gonna need another ambulance for the baby"

Bobby took his radio speaking into it "Dispatch, this is Engine 118"

"Stand by 188"

Bobby just shook his head "no more standing by. Guys, let's get her on the gurney. Let's go!"

The team sprang into motion.

Adalynn glanced at the baby still in Roger's hands— his cries still piercing. Her eyes flicked back to Sonia now on the gurney. It's like she could feel her heart breaking in two places at once watching the scene unfold.

But you can't feel it. You have to push it away, stay professional. And that might just be the hardest part.

It took about 12-15 minutes to arrive at the hospital, maybe a few extra more. The surgeon already walking through the doors pulling her gloves on.

Adalynn climbed out of the engine quickly jogging up towards Bobby who was talking to the surgeon.

"How long has she been down?"

Adalynn glanced at hen who was still doing compressions. Before back to Bobby "13– no 15 minutes"

Adalynn watched the doctors expression drop before she shrugged "alright, call it"

Adalynn felt her mouth open slightly, a swirl of emotions running through her. This wasn't supposed to happen, this woman was supposed to meet her son.

"Hen" Bobby spoke softly. But she didn't stop, she kept going. Bobby called her name again and still nothing. Only by the third time did Hen finally stop the monitor flatlining filling their ears.

Adalynn looked to the ground, hand pressed to her forehead as she took a few steps away not able to look at the broken look on Hen's face.

Just as the began to Sonia out of the ambulance Roger came up, still holding the infant, Buck and Eddie following behind him "How is she?"

Adalynn's jaw was tight as she took a deep breath, avoiding Roger's gaze. Buck noticed her stance immediately, the tension covering her body.

Bobby took a breath, his gaze filled with sorry before he answered Roger "I'm so sorry"

Rogers expression immediately dropped. His broken gaze landing onto his wife as he slowly moved forward, his hand brushing the hair from her face "you were right.... He's perfect"

Adalynn moved towards the ambo, sitting on the edge as she watches the interaction. Buck took a few steps towards her, noticing how her eyes glazed over just the slightest. She glanced his way before just shaking her head, not wanting to talk.

Roger continues talking, his voice chocked up "I wish you could see him.... I know I was scared and worried we weren't ready for this and I am damn sure and I am damn sure I'm not ready to do this without you" a tear rolled down his cheek "but I will. I'm gonna figure it out"

Adalynn could movement coming from behind her, Hen joining beside her sitting on the ambo as well.

They all watched as Roger set the baby onto Sonia's chest before slowly placing a kiss to her forehead before resting his own there.

Adalynn's heart broke at this. Just watching the man hold together what was left of his forever changed life.

That was until suddenly— the heart monitor picked up a rhythm, once, twice, and it continued. Hen stood up instantly

The flatline being replaced with the beeping of Sonia's heart.

Eddie moved forward, pressing his fingers to her neck "She's got a pulse!"

And just like that the surgeon jumped back into play "go, go! Get her inside now!"

Roger followed before pausing and turning to them "Thank you"

And just like that Hen broke, falling back onto the edge of the ambulance her breathing rigid like she had been holding it since she stopped compressions.

Adalynn took her hand tightly, her eyes still on the team wheeling Sonia through the doors.

"That was amazing" Eddie breathed out, shock written across his face.

Buck shook his head "no, that was a miracle"

They had arrived back at the station only for a moment to refuel and gather any necessities that need to be restocked.

Adalynn's hands raked over her hair as she grabbed a granola bar from the kitchen, a heavy sigh leaving her lips as she leaned against the counter.

Buck trailed in not too long after, his gaze landing onto her almost instantly.

Like she knew exactly what was coming, she spoke before he had the chance. "It never gets easier, does it?" Her voice was quiet, almost bitter. "Losing people we're supposed to be saving?"

Buck inhaled slowly, making his way toward the island counter opposite her. He leaned forward on his hands, giving a small shake of his head. "Based on my experience... no. Not really."

Adalynn's gaze dropped to the tile beneath her boots. "That woman almost didn't get to meet her son," she said, voice hitching slightly. "She carried him for nine months—felt every kick, every flutter—waiting for this exact moment. And she almost missed it." She waved her hand vaguely through the air, frustrated. "I know we're supposed to keep our feelings separate from the job, but that—"

"The woman's alive," Buck cut in gently. His tone wasn't dismissive—it was calm, steady. Reassuring. "She'll get to hold him. That matters."

Adalynn looked up, her eyes meeting his.

Talking to Buck was never hard. It should've been—especially for someone like her, someone who kept a lock on her past, her pain, her walls built so high even her closest friends couldn't scale them without effort— besides the ones who where there from the beginning.

Not wanting another mess, and awkward situation like back in Texas.

But Evan Buckley... somehow, he kept finding footholds. Kept climbing.

And the worst part? She didn't know when she'd started letting him.

She didn't look away.

Neither did he.

And in the quiet that settled between them, it didn't feel like two people decompressing from a shift.

It felt like something else entirely.

Adalynn rested her head against the headrest in the truck as she watched the now very familiar scenery pass by.

Buck's phone ringing peaking her attention, her brows furrow "Is that Chim?"

Buck just shrugged as he answered "hello?"

After a moment, Buck listen to chimneys question on where they were he replies "uh, we are crossing" he leaned forward to look out the window "Robertson for the 320th time" no amusement in his voice at those words.

"Get over to Doheny Park, man" Chimney quickly said his eyes still on the new channel "the whole damn neighbourhood's on fire. Looks like it's a gas main break"

Bucks eyes widen slightly "you heard it on the scanner?"

"No I'm watching it on the news right now, nobody's over there, Buck not a single unit"

Adalynn watched as Buck quickly pulled back on the headset "Hey Cap! Uh, Doheny park is going up in flames. Chim thinks it's a gas main break. We're close right?"

"Close enough. Let's do it"

. . .

The second they pulled up Adalynn was tugging on her turnout coat, her eyes scanning the residential area that was now covered with smoke, fire hydrant leaking from a crashed car, houses on fire.

"Dispatch, this is Captain 118. We're at Doheny Park. Multiple residential structure fires. Send everything you can" just as Bobby finished talking into the radio a small explosion of fire shot up from the ground before disappearing into smoke.

"Copy that, 188. Trying to find additional resources for you, but you might be on your own for the next fifteen, maybe twenty minutes"

Adalynn shook her head as she grabbed her helmet from beside her feet. Just as the climbed out of the engine a frantic man came running over.

"Help! My son he's trapped upstairs!" He points towards the house with a U-Haul in front of it, smoke falling from the windows.

"Do you know where? Which room?" Bobby questioned his voice level.

The man shook his head quickly "no, no I haven't seen him!" The panic was clear.

Adalynn's eyes scanned the building until Eddie pointed and shouts "Cap I see him! Upstairs window!"

A loud explosion wrecked through the air, Adalynn ducking down slightly. As soon as she turned she was met with the boys father and a young teenager girl trying to get towards the building.

"Woah, woah!" Adalynn held her arms out holding the girl back while Eddie stopped the father attempting to calm them down.

"You got to save him" the man begged.

Adalynn raised her hand "sir, we are going to do everything we can"

The engine rolled forward towards the house, Adalynn remained trying to calm the two frantic family members still. Eddie rushing up to Bobby explaining how the hydrant has been taken out and the water in the trucks isn't enough to take down one house.

Bobby giving orders to him to keep trying dispatch and that the gas company needs to shut down Doheny park.

Adalynn took a breath raising her hand towards the father "Sir, believe me I understand your panic but we can't be pulling more of you out, the structure isn't safe. We are trying to get your son"

The man's hand ran over his hair his eyes scanning the house before taking a few steps back.

Adalynn sighed before jogging up closer to the building. Buck was climbing the ladder raising it towards the window where the boy was.

Adalynn was watching intently as the ladder slowly moved closer. Until it snapped, the ladder breaking causing Buck to fall forward, one hand still holding it tightly.

Adalynn instinctively took a step forward

"Buck!" Bobby shouts as another explosion rang from the house, flames covering the window.

Buck glanced down to the ground before letting go, landing on his feet.

Adalynn moved forward eyes scanning him "are you okay?"

Buck nods quickly looking between her and Bobby "yeah? I'm good" Buck paused for a moment his brows drawing together "woah, hey, Eddie, Eddie what are you doing?"

Adalynn's head snapped towards the house as Eddie was climbing up the gutter. Adalynn watched with wide eyes "what the hell are you doing?!" She shouts but gets no reply as he climbs onto the roof. The Diaz girl tossing her hands in the air.

"I feel like if I ever did that you'd yell at me" Buck commented, brows pulled together as he looked at Bobby.

Adalynns eyes didn't tear away from Eddie as he secured his harness to the chimney before moving to the edge of the roof and swinging inside, breaking the glass with his feet.

Adalynn didn't like the silence that followed for about a minute or two her hand stayed rested in her radio, waiting. And if there wasn't a response she was damn prepared to run in there after him.

Then Eddies voice came through "Cap! I got him. Alive but unconscious. I'm prepping for evac"

Adalynn's eyes scanned the building she could hear the wood creaking, the fire hitting the wood. It made her chest tighten. She knew the sound, she knew what the creaking meant.

It was about to give. She pressed her radio "Eddie, get the hell out of there right now"

She was in a panic frenzy, she didn't hear hen come up behind her to Cap and Buck saying the gas people have arrived along with two more engines but there's still no water pressure.

It was like everything faded out, her eyes trained on the building, hearing every creak, every sound, her eyes scanning for Eddie and the boy, Alex.

Another explosion rang through the air and that's all the already barely holding pieces of wood took crumbling down inside, flames hitting the outside air.

"Eddie!" She shouts, taking a step forward. Her breath catching in her throat before talking into her radio again. "Eddie, respond"

The silence felt deafening.

"Negative in Evac" Eddies voice broke through, tight barely audible from the smoke. "Pinned down south side of the house"

Adalynn turned on her heels towards Bobby, her eyes panicked "Someone needs to get in there!"

Bobby looked around trying to think of a solution. But Buck spoke before he could "I'm gonna take an extinguisher! I can make that jump I can help Eddie!"

Just as Buck went to climb up the ladder again Bobby stopped him. "No, wait"

Adalynn looked at him confused "wait? What—" she stopped mid-sentence as the sound of a plane engine hit her ears.

Once it came into view Bobby quickly shout "incoming! Everyone take cover now, go! Under the trucks!"

Adalynn looked between the building then the engine before reluctantly jogging towards it, crawling underneath.

"Hunker down, 217 incoming" Bobby said to inform Eddie who was still inside the house.

The shouts of telling people to get under roared around them, the plane flying close by until suddenly the sound of water hitting the truck engines echoed around them, loud.

A waterfall of water filling the area, soaking you no matter where you were. Once it stopped Adalynn glanced up, water trailing down her face as she tugged off her helmet climbing out from underneath the rig.

She stood, taking a few rushed steps towards the house, her hand reaching for her radio again "Eddie, do you copy?"

Her whole body was tense as she stared at the open door, listening to the silence through the radio.

Until finally his silhouette came into sight, carrying the young boy, Alex in his arms as he stepped out. He carefully set the boy down, still unconscious as hen began to examine him.

Until finally the boy coughed, eyes fluttering open. The father and sister rushing forward towards him. Happy sobs leaving their lips.

Eddie stood, breathless. Until a pair of arms wrapped tightly around him. Adalynn burying her head onto his shoulder. "You idiot"

She pulled away looking at him, shaking her head before hitting him in the chest "Don't do that again"

Buck came over as he pats Eddies back "what's with the whole spider-man routine?"

Eddie just sighed "I don't know. I just did it... and prayed a lot"

Adalynn chuckled lightly from his comment. "Well it looks like someone was listening" Bobby said softly.

Adam raised a hand as he set his plate in the sink "Hey, the whole jumping through a window thing did sound pretty badass"

"It was pretty stupid" Adalynn stated as she stood from her seat.

Lilianes lips pursed "I mean—"

"Don't" Adalynn turned quickly "do not agree with him it goes to his head. Exactly why he became a lawyer"

Adam's mouth fell agape. "Wha—"

Adalynn just quirked a brow at him which caused him to go silent. Her eyes narrowed slightly "wait, why are you here, eating my food when you have your own place?"

Adam cleared his throat as he set down his glass "To be matter-of-fact, I cooked this, so" he trailed off causing Adalynn's eyes to roll. "Why is this bothering you so much? He saved a kids life"

"Are you kidding me? He could've died, it was stupid, reckless, and no thought was put into it" Adalynn listed the things off before hesitating "I heard the noise the wood was making before most of it collapsed, Adam. It's one thing I'll always be able to catch since Mack— I just couldn't do that again"

Adam sighed softly before nodding, understanding her point.

"Wait? Who's Mack?" Liliane questioned walking towards the two. "Is that the girl in that photo?"

Adam looked to Adalynn with slight widened eyes, not sure if he should answer or not.

Adalynn took a breath "Yes, Mack is the blonde you'll find in multiple photos still packed away in boxes. She, uh,  died Saving me when a beam collapsed on us" she blinked quickly, not wanting to cry, it was one thing she was sick off.

She cleared her throat pointing towards a box covered with a throw blanket "that's a bunch of her things I haven't been able to go through, so.... Don't accidentally throw it out"

Lilianes gaze softened "Ads, I'm so sorry" she uttered, feeling slightly guilt about even asking about it now.

Adalynn gave a tight lipped smile and nod, her heart thumping in her chest "It's okay... it's probably about time you knew anyways."

She ran a hand through her tangled curls before taking a breath "I'm gonna turn in for the night" she gives a faint wave before walking off towards her bedroom.

Adam and Liliane sharing a quiet look. One that instantly read that they're worried about her.

One Adalynn would know if she saw but she would be grateful she didn't, she hated that look, the look of pity or concern. She read into it too deep making her feel like they're quietly saying 'you're not over it yet?'

But that wasn't something she could just get over. Makayla was dead because of her, she died saving her, she went back into the building because Adalynn insisted on going back in for someone and Mack would never let her go in without backup.

Makayla Robinson will always haunt Adalynn's narrative.
