016: How Many Scoops?

9-1-1 SEASON TWO
EPISODE ELEVEN: NEW BEGINNINGS

───────────────────

Adalynn's eyes rolled as she placed the two empty beer bottles on her counter, softly clinking together.

She turned one hand rested on her hip while the other supported her as she leaned on the counter "you can just admit you are physically incapable of keeping anything from our captain"

Buck raised a finger defensively as he walked towards her "technically I didn't mention you by name"

Her lips pursed as she nods, her eyes trained on him before she hummed "right she trailed off with a shake of her head.

The man holds his arms out "besides what were you talking about to him which caused him to put the pieces together" he quirked a questioning brow at her.

She froze for a moment before shaking her head "why did I find out that you refer to yourself as Buck 1.0 and 2.0"

"Wow" he sang out before laughing lightly "he mentioned that?"

She shrugged with a smirk "not in detail, but now I'm slightly curious"

The man took another step forward, his eyes meeting hers "probably best not to go into detail"

"So you were a whore" Adalynn bluntly said her shoulders bunched.

"That's a bit dramatic—"

The girl just laughed before she hit him lightly on the arm "wow, that was a guess. There's usually only three reasons men don't go talking about their past 'versions'" she made air-quotes with her fingers.

Bucks head falls forward, his tongue running across his teeth. Adalynn's head shook as she walked towards the fridge, grabbing two more beers.

While her back was turned Buck's eyes looked over the small area of the counter that was lined with photos, some recent, others taken back in Texas, some clearly of her childhood— based off the one photo of a young girls arms wrapped around an older boys neck but in the background two other girls we clearly fighting.

His eyes lingered on one with Adam, her, and another person who was a mystery to him. As he studied the photo he saw the wide smiles on their faces- a genuine one of laughter on Adalynn and not the smile people use for taking a regular photo.

She looked happy— probably the most happy he'd seen and it was through a photograph.

Adalynn turned back around setting the bottle in front of him before taking a sip of her own.

Buck points towards the photo "who's that with you and Adam?" his gaze finally looking back to her, catching the way she shifted after noticing what photo he was pointing at and not some family member she wished it was.

Adalynn took a deep breath "Uh, that is Makayla or Mack— that was her nickname to everyone in the station. Everyone insisted Makayla took to long to say but they never complained about mine" her lips rolled into her mouth as her arms cross over her chest "uh, she was my best friend"

He looked at her, a crease forming between his brows, curiosity from that one word 'was' a word you would use in past tense. "Was?" He questioned.

She looked at him, her eyes glazed over ever so slightly as she nodded "was"

She took a breath, grabbing her drink as she rounded the island counter avoiding his gaze.

Preferably she didn't want to cry about it anymore but just talking about it or her always brought a twinge of pain in her chest. Like someone was reaching in and squeezing her heart.

She finally turned blinking a few times her one hand still on her hip. "The story entangles into why I have that scar on back over to my left shoulder.. and the one along my side" she states her hand motioning over the one on her side.

Buck went to say something but she cut him off before he could "I know you've been wanting to ask but didn't want to overstep— I caught you staring in my mirror one night"

She was right in a sense. Once he had noticed it— the visible burn scar along her back to her shoulder it did peak his curiosity.

"It was a structure fire—"

"You don't have too" Buck quickly cut in, even though she was trying to mask the pain it had brought her he could still see beneath the cracks.

She nods before she muttered "I know" her hands move to hold the neck of the bottle in front of her "structure fire, thought we had more time to get a victim, the building collapsed on me and Makayla. Beam falling on us as well as us falling through the floor"

There was a long pause as if she was preparing herself "I woke up in the hospital... She didn't" she took a long swig of the beverage in front of her.

"now, don't go all pity on me like everyone in Texas did" her tone was serious before switching to a slight joking one "Might have to move again"

She laughed— but it was more hollow than anything, moving towards the living room. Buck paused for a moment then followed her, his head nodding ever so slightly "okay, no pity" his eyes landing onto her "I won't tell anyone"

She gave him a grateful smile as she uttered "thank you"

She inhaled sharply before standing, clearing her throat hands running along her pants "um, you hungry?"

Adalynn glide past him opening a drawer— her secret hideout for old takeout menus "pizza?"

Changing the topic seemed to be Adalynn's secret skill whenever things like this hit too close to home like this had. Brushing it off with such ease no one ever would question.

Buck's eyes stayed trained on her as she moved through the kitchen. He cleared his throat before nodding, going along with her subject change. "Yeah, I could eat pizza"

Adalynn nods while she bit off the dry skin on her lips, still not looking at the man.

The team walked into the building, all dressed in bright yellow hazmat suits, their masks on.

Adalynn looked around the building brows furrowed as to how quiet it was inside.

"What we thinking, gas leak?" Chimney asked, looking around.

Hen shrugged "could be some pathogen, worlds a crazy place these days"

The faint beep of the device pulled Adalynn's attention towards her captain as he spoke "Negative for combustibles as of now" he turned to his team "masks stay on for the duration"

The team slowly moves throughout the building "where is everyone? It's too quiet"

Adalynn glanced at the Buckley man "this feels like a horror movie situation waiting to happen"

They continue to walk through the building, the silence almost deafening.

"Got one!" Eddie announced as he rushed over to the side of the unconscious woman in medical scrubs. He places two fingers to her neck for a moment "she's got a pulse- pupilarity response normal"

"Help! Please help!"

Adalynn's head darts down the hall before following after her captain who had quickly moved after the voice hit their ears.

Bobby opened a door to a room stepping inside the others following in shortly— minus Eddie.

Adalynn noticed the unconscious people in scrubs in the room.

"Help, please help me" the woman pointed down to her legs "he is crushing my legs"

Adalynn looked from the unconscious man and then up to the lady her eyes widening "Oh my god"

The woman's skin to her neck was folded down only revealing the red, bloody, raw area underneath.

Bobby shot her a look while the woman's gaze landed on her with panic "what?!"

Adalynn quickly shook her head "it's nothing— I mean that's a big dude you probably can't feel your legs" she rambled on before her eyes fell closed and her lips rolled into her mouth.

Bobby took a breath "Okay, Buck, give me a hand over here, chimney you check on her"

"What's wrong?" Her hand went to her neck which made Adalynn grimaces slightly "don't touch your neck"

"What the—"

"Ma'am, it looks like the staff here just wasn't one hundred percent done before they lost consciousness" Hen began to explain "you're still under the effects of the general anesthesia which is good. Okay, we're gonna keep you nice and numb"

The woman looked around dazed "we're gonna need to put a cold compress on your face"

"What is a stitch loose?"

"We just need to preserve as much tissue as possible while we transport you to the hospital" Bobby explained his voice calm.

The woman looked between the two before sitting up- the skin to her forehead falling forward and covering her face "oh, my face is off! My face is off!"

"Oh my god" Adalynn uttered as she moved forward in an attempt to stop the woman from moving.

"Same symptoms over here, cap" Chimney called out "she's sleeping like a baby but she's stable"

Adalynn's nose scrunched as she places her hands in the woman's shoulder "just lean back"

Adalynn slowly lowers the woman back down into a lying position before backing away.

"They run the anesthesia lines through the walls in these places, don't they?" Bobby asks glancing at the socket where a yellow line was running into the wall.

Chimney nodded "yeah, what're you thinking, a leak or rupture?"

"Yeah, then why isn't she out?" Buck motions to the woman on the bed.

Hen slowly and carefully moving the skin back into its rightful spot causing Adalynn to look away.

Bobby glances at the woman "looks like she's reviving oxygen from the nasal cannula"

"Eddie you copy?"

"Yeah, cap"

"What's your status?"

"Found a couple more patients in back, all stable"

Bobby nods "I'm gonna send Chim your way, you guys see if you can locate the tank supply room you turn off anything that's got a knob or a valve in this place" Bobby orders

"A pipe must've busted, yeah?"

"Probably the construction guys" the lady uttered out.

"You saw construction guys" Bobby quickly asked

Her head shook just slightly "no I heard them, right before I went under"

Adalynn's brows pull together "okay but there's literally no noise at all now"

After a moment or two eddies voice came through "Found the leak, plugging it now"

Chimneys voice hit her ears "gonna need a gurney back here"

Adalynn reached for her radio as she nods "copy"

Adalynn moved into the back room, pushing the gurney with her, her eyes landing on the man Eddie and Chimney were holding up with a saw blade imbedded into his chest.

"Yeah, so I'm never going into a building that involves anesthesia again" she utters moving the gurney next to them before helping them lower the man carefully down.

After a few minutes The man uttered something about measuring and cutting while they were bandaging around the area before passing out once again.

Adalynn followed behind as they wheel him out passing hen and Buck who watched it go by with slightly widened eyes.

Adalynn pulled the hood off her head and removed her mask now that the air was clear and continued towards the engine.

Adalynn tucked her phone into her back pocket as she slid onto the bench beside Christopher. The bright umbrella overhead casted stripes of shadow across the red picnic table.

Christopher was already halfway through his scoop of mint chocolate chip, happily swinging his legs under the table.

"I swear, I blinked and half your ice cream disappeared," Adalynn said, eyes wide, with a smile on her face"

He shrugged. "It's melting."

She laughed. "That's your excuse? Gotta eat it faster or it'll escape?"

Christopher nodded with all the seriousness of a seven-year-old on a sugar mission. "Exactly."

Adalynn took a bite of her own cone—rocky road "I forgot how good this place is— Don't tell your dad I let you get two scoops. I'm not trying to start a war." She raised her hands in a mock of surrender

Chris grinned mischievously, lips tinted green. "It's a secret."

"Good man."

They sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes, watching people drift by on the boardwalk. A man with a guitar played off-tune Beatles covers in the distance, and a little girl shrieked with laughter as a seagull tried to steal her fries.

Adalynn nudged Christopher gently with her elbow. "So... how's everything been lately? You've had a lot of changes."

Chris looked up at her, licking around the edge of his cone. "You mean my mom?"

She nodded, softly. "Yeah. You okay with her being around more? I know you missed her and wanted her to come home"

He was quiet for a second, shoulders rising in a shrug.

"It's weird," he admitted. "She's nice. And I'm happy she's here" it fell silent for a moment. Adalynn knew how much he wanted her to come home— I mean the kid asked 'Santa' to do it but Adalynn also knew how it could be difficult to go back into the flow of her being back

Adalynn's heart ached a little, she loved her nephew more than most things in her life.

"I think that makes sense," she said gently. "It's okay to feel more than one thing at a time. Excited. Confused. Even nervous or happy."

Chris looked thoughtful, then took another bite. "She tries really hard. Like, really hard."

Adalynn smiled faintly. They watched a group of kids run by, laughing with sticky hands and faces.

"You're doing a good job," she added, bumping her shoulder lightly against his. "You're allowed to figure it all out in your own time."

He smiled at her then—wide and honest—and it melted her more than the sun ever could.

"Thanks, Addy."

She tapped the tip of his nose with her napkin. "Anytime, buddy."

He squinted up at her. "Next time, can we come here again? And maybe get churros too?"

Adalynn raised an eyebrow before laughing. "You're playing with fire, kid."

Chris grinned. "Dad says that's your specialty."

She snorted. "Touché."

They clinked their cones together like a toast before digging back in—no rush, just two people sharing ice cream and a moment of peace.

Adalynn hugged Christopher tightly, kissing him on his temple before the boy walked inside the house.

"How many scoops did you give him?" Eddie questioned, arms crossed.

Adalynn raised a brow "one, obviously it was seven" her hands landed on her hips "you really think I would give him more?"

"Yes" Eddie replied bluntly before a half smile tugged at his lips "you're too weak when it comes to him"

Adalynn rolled her eyes with a scoff "yeah, okay" she uttered going silent before pursing her lips and raising a hand "okay, maybe— but that's besides the point"

Eddie hummed and nodded before glancing at his son "You should take him out more often"

"Aw, you trusting me with your son more?" She questioned sarcastically, a hand going to her chest.

"Funny" Eddie uttered sarcastically before leaning on the doorway "I'm serious, he keeps asking me for you to move back in"

Adalynn's lips turned into an upside down smile before shaking her head, her gaze on Christopher as he disappeared into the house silence falling between them.

"I'd die for that kid" she stated finally before taking a breath.

"I know"

Adalynn glanced at Eddie "what's he doing this weekend?"

Eddie frowned "nothing that I know of"

She smiled "well, now he is" she peaked inside the doorway "Chris! You wanna spend the night at my place this weekend?"

Christopher's eyes lit up as he looked at her before quickly nodding "yes!"

Adalynn laughed lightly "alright, I'll pick you up Friday"

She gave Eddie a quick hug before she turned to walk back to her car. Eddie shouting something about spoiling him or too much sugar— she wasn't completely listening but still answered with a thumbs up.

Adalynn climbed out of the engine. Cars backed up with a crowd of people surrounding the area, the faint yell of a man hitting her ears.

"LAFD, Make room!" Bobby's voice echoed as the crowd subtly moved to the side, the team walking through.

Adalynn's eyes landed on the shark that lay on the freeway reviving water from a hose that was being held by a worker. Her eyes drifted to the man whose arm was halfway inside its mouth.

"What the hell" Buck muttered his eyes scanning over the scene

"Tiger shark" one of the women pipped in "we were transporting her for release into the wild. Truck jackknifed"

"Jaws!" Bobby called out.

Chimney just nodded with a smile "right?" He noticed the look the team members were giving him his face dropping slightly "oh right, those Jaws. Jaws!"

Adalynn used the back of her hand to cover her laugh as she looked away from the Han man.

"I'm on it" Eddie stated before moving back to the engine.

The man groaned out in pain every movement of the shark caused its teeth to graze across his skin.

Chimney crouched down cautiously trying to inspect the wound "how'd his arm get in there?"

"Diego was trying to get what water was left in our pump system" one guy explained "she can't breathe without it!"

Hen glanced at the man "how much time does she have left?"

"Minutes" the woman quickly replied.

Bucks brows pull together "so" he drawled out "do we wait that long or do we just" he raised his Halligan.

"No, no! Don't kill her!" Diego shouts looking at the man "she's come so far"

Adalynn's lips pursed as her head tilts "your arm is literally in her mouth"

Diego shakes his head "don't kill her!" He pleads.

"Alright" she said under her breath.

"Okay, guys, we're gonna do this really carefully" Bobby stated to the team "come on let's get in there"

"I'm sorry what?" Adalynn questions with raised brows but still continues to follow her captain anyway.

"Hold the shark down"

Adalynn inhaled sharply as she crouched to the ground in attempts to keep it still along with Bobby and Buck.

Eddie came over with the jaws, carefully placing it in the sharks mouth before slowly forcing its mouth open.

Once Diego's arm was free Bobby stayed "alright, let's get him transported now"

Adalynn jogged over to Chimney as she helps the man into the gurney.

"Don't let her die, please"

.       .        .

Adalynn watched as they slowly raised the shark up after attaching it to the ladder, her head shakes ever so slightly "we're really transporting it?"

Bobby just smiles glancing at her before nodding "yep"

Adalynn couldn't help the slight smile the tugged at her lips before she climbed into the engine.

The sirens flicking on as they drive off towards the destination it was supposed to end up instead of The freeway.

The engine slowed to a stop on the boat ramp.

Everyone climbing out of the vehicle two team members moving into the water to help steady as they lowered the shark down into the water.

Adalynn stood from the dock her gaze watching intently as it submerged into the murky water her eyes losing sight of it.

A few minutes of nothing just stillness one of the workers pointed out into the water "There!"

Adalynn followed noticing the fin sticking out of the water as it swam deeper into the ocean.

Her gaze adverts to Buck who was cheering and laughing, a wide grin on his face. She couldn't help the lopsided smile that tugged at her lips.

"Hey too bad Diego is missing this!" Buck shouts over to the worker.

The man's gaze pulls away from the shark and his phone that was recording "he's not missing anything!"

Adalynn glanced at Eddie who stood beside her, leaning closer to the man "remind me not to go swimming for awhile"

Eddie just laughs with a shake of his head.

Adalynn turns holding up a box of frozen pizza "do you at all think there's a possibility that I could screw this up?"

"Frozen pizza?" Buck questioned with raised brows, a smirk on his face.

Adalynn set it in the cart before her hands rest in her hips "you truly don't understand how terrible I am at cooking— so yes, screwing up frozen pizza is probably in my bingo card"

Buck just laughs which earns a look from the woman as she continues down the aisle "it's not funny" she utters, her eyes scanning the flavours of ice cream.

Buck motions to the cart that was filled with mostly junk and frozen food "I mean, it kinda is"

Adalynn just raised a brow at him as she sets the ice cream in the cart. "Christopher is spending one night and your buying enough food for a month"

"Well" She trailed off hands resting on the cart before she scoffed "I don't even know why I invited you to come here— and all of this" her hands move in dramatic circles over the car "is necessary because I'm trying to keep the favourite aunt spot until the day I die— I cannot have my sisters pass me"

Buck watches her with a soft smile "you know you don't have to try that hard, right?" Her gaze flicks to him as his shoulders bunch "that kid already loves you"

Adalynn held his gaze for a moment— like those words hit deeper then he would no. Adalynn just nods "well, it's better if he thinks I'm cool, so"

Buck laughs once again as he follows her through the store. "Well, maybe you should find things that aren't shaped like dinosaurs— incase he grows tastebuds overnight"

"Funny" Adalynn mutters sarcastically but the smile on her face betrayed her.

Adalynn took a bite of the food in front of her before she looks over her shoulder, her gaze on Chimney and Maddie who stood fairly close together on the apparatus floor.

A smug smile covered her face as she turns to Buck "Looks like Chim is putting moves on your sister"

"What?" Buck quickly exclaimed as he moved toward the railing.

It didn't take long for the rest of the team to join him— privacy wasn't much of a thing around here.

Unbeknownst to Chimney, who just scored a date and got a kiss on the cheek. The whole team was watching.

As Maddie was walking away Hen whistled loudly before snapping her fingers.

Chimneys smile dropped as he turned to see the others standing there. Eddie holding his hands over his heart almost pretending to sing a song, Bobby clapping, Adalynn whistling before clapping herself with a wide smile.

And then Buck, who stood leaning on the railing just staring at the man. Despite the smile on his face.

Adalynn made her way into the living room, holding two bowls of ice cream, a mixture of chocolate and vanilla.

"Okay, listen" she said sternly as she handed it to the young boy sitting on her couch "Your father can never— like never know what you ate here"

Christopher just laughs as he picks up the spoon.

Adalynn shook her head as she sits down beside the boy, leaning forward and pressing play on the movie that was already loaded.

"Funny now, your dad might kill me" She utters with a mouthful of the ice cream.

Adalynn's head darts towards the front door as it opened revealing Adam And Liliane.

Adam looking rather cheerful while Liliane did not.

"Guess what" Adam exclaimed cheerfully. Adalynn set her bowl on the coffee table as she stood saying a quick I'll be back to Christopher.

"I got my own place!"

"That's great! Considering my couch had a permanent Adam imprint in it" Adalynn says giving the man a hug. as she pulled away her eyes lingered on Liliane "why do you look so unhappy about it"

"It's across the hall" She uttered as she hung up her jacket "he'll still be mooching off of us"

"Offended— but not completely wrong"

Adalynn just laughed with a shake of her head before she lowered her voice to a whisper "well, please refrain from arguing while my nephew is here"

Adam made a motion over his lips then pretended to lock it which made Adalynn give him an unimpressed look.

"Come on" Adam called out as the Diaz woman walked back towards the couch "that was funny!"

I would like to say this took me like four days and I hate everything 💀
But that's just me being my harshest critic anyways hope you all enjoyed!!
Love y'all!!!
