Chapter 20: Betrayal of the Highest Degree
TW// violence
...
A familiar growl.
The notion that Leilani Prewett had been having a beautiful night before hearing the noise that had her heart shuddering was cruel, but true. She almost wished that the moon wouldn't have been there that night to illuminate his features, just because his face was enough to be heart-stopping—and not in a good way.
She say frozen in her spot in the alley as he walked closer to her with his horrible yellow eyes and matted hair. The worst of all was his smile though, it had always been capable of inflicting nightmares into the deepest parts of her brain and stitching them their as if she were an unfinished quilt.
"You miss me?" Greyback hisses through his teeth, finally showing his entire being in the moonlight.
"No," she jutted out her chin in an act of defiance.
He turned his head to the side and laughed heartily almost like she was telling him a joke and they were friends. She was not joking and nor were they friends, quite the opposite actually.
Seeing the short moment of distraction as he turned with his back facing her, Leilani scrambled to get to her feet and run. However, the entities above must have cursed her with an ill fate that caused her to trip over her own feet and land in a heap at Greyback's feet.
Mocking laughter slipping from his face, he used one arm to pull her from the ground and slam her back into the wall. She groaned from pain.
"You're not getting away this time."
...
Promising to visit for dinner, James and Lily traveled from Godric's Hollow to Sirius and Remus's flat. They never knew what to expect when coming over to their house, but seeing Marlene with bloodshot eyes and tear tracks down her cheeks was not high on the list. Still, Marlene and Sirius insisted that if they weren't intruding, and if they wanted to they could stay for dinner.
Lily sat on the floor with her back pressed up against the couch next to Marlene. The latter's eyes were glassy, and appeared to be frozen like the rest of her. All Lily wanted to accomplish was getting Marlene to talk. Yet, Lily didn't even have to try because Marlene knew better than to hide from Lily, it never really worked.
"I feel sick to my stomach," Marlene croaked out.
She was well aware even if Sirius and James were in the kitchen making dinner, they had their full attention on her.
"Like you're gonna throw up?" Lily's motherly instincts kicked in.
"No, like you know how when you get so sad, that you get sick to your stomach?" Marlene stopped speaking for a moment to see Lily nod. "It's like a constant stomachache."
"I know the feeling. How can I help?" Lily spoke as Marlene leaned onto her shoulder.
"Just stay with me."
...
"You think you can just leave us, Leilani? Tell me, what do we do with cowards?" Greyback snarled, still holding her against the wall.
Unable to move much, she clenched her jaw and desperately tried to dry her tears as they fell. Leilani couldn't help it, being taught that crying was showing weakness at a young age, the rule of not crying had always stuck with her.
"You knew the consequences of leaving. You've committed betrayal of the highest degree."
She could feel his hot breath as he spoke his words of hatred towards her. In a sense, he was correct, she had known what would happen if she left, but Leilani couldn't bring herself to care.
In a few swift movements, Greyback had dropped her to the ground and made deep wounds in her arms. Her dark blood pooled down her arms, in an attempt to stop it, she pushed her shirt into them.
"Good luck," Greyback gave a sadistic wink before disappearing.
Realizing quickly that she didn't have many other options, Leilani decided that waiting for Remus to come back for her was the best option. It didn't take much longer for her to see his facial features drop when he saw her on the pavement.
He pushed the napkins onto her arms to try to soak up the blood, but the napkins he was given were dirt cheap for the parlor and weren't very absorbent.
"Remus, those napkins aren't gonna do a thing," Leilani smiled despite the situation.
"I'll take you to St. Mungo's then," Remus started to panic.
"They'll recognize me as one of the werewolves and then what kind of life will I have?" Leilani logically countered.
She could feel herself getting weaker.
"I can't just let you die," Remus sounded near hysterics now.
He slides down from his knees to sit beside her and pull her head into his lap. She weakly smiled up at him. It really wasn't the time, yet Leilani couldn't stop herself from admiring Remus.
"It was gonna 'appen eventually," she responded as laced their hands together. "I had the best time of my life with you."
Remus smiled sadly back at her as tears started to flow down his cheeks. He couldn't lose her. Leilani was too good of a person to be lost.
...
Marlene sat at dinner quietly eating the spaghetti the boys had made—Lily had been surprised they didn't burn the house down—but she didn't include herself in conversation because she had a horrible gut feeling. She couldn't get it out of her head that something horrible had happened with Remus and Leilani. The last time she had a feeling this bad was before the last Order meeting they went on.
Marcus died on that Order meeting.
She couldn't take it anymore. Her breathing increased as the panic raised inside her. Marlene had convinced herself something was going on and there was no going back.
"Where did Remus go?" Marlene interrupted the conversation.
"He went for ice cream with Leilani," Sirius hummed, swirling his drink around as he spoke. "Why?"
"It doesn't really take this long to get ice cream does it? I thought he said they would be back in time for dinner," Marlene's heart rate increased rapidly.
"They're probably just-"
"No, nope. I'm going to go look for them," Marlene stood up from the table abruptly, knocking both her glass and Lily's over. "Which ice cream shop was it?"
"Hold the phone-"
"Which ice cream shop was it?" Marlene repeated, cutting off Sirius again.
"Let's not jump to any conclusions," Sirius stood up along with Lily and James.
"Sirius! I know you know where Remus and Leilani went! I swear to Merlin if you don't tell me right now I will-"
"They went to Maggie's Ice Cream!" Sirius cut in at the prospect of his girlfriend going insane.
"Fine, let's go," Marlene grabbed her purse and went out the flat door.
"What-"
"You heard her, Sirius, let's go," Lily shrugged her shoulders and went after her as quickly as she could.
Sirius looked at James and he shrugged as well, before following his pregnant wife out the door. He took that as a sign they were actually going out to search for Remus and Leilani on the whim that they were hurt.
In hindsight, he would be very glad he listened to Marlene.
...
If you asked Remus what sitting there in that alley with Leilani felt like, then he wouldn't have been able to describe it. Any and all words seemed unattainable to him, worse than any writer's block imaginable.
The one thing he was keeping track of was Leilani's heart beat. It was faint, but it was still there. His mind was reeling about the different paths he could take to get Leilani to a healer when he heard someone that sounded like Marlene calling his name.
"Remus!" The voice shouted a little louder.
"M'over here!" He shouted back.
Hopefully he hadn't just led a death eater to him and Leilani.
Alas, it wasn't a death eater at all, the voice actually was Marlene. At the sight of Remus and Leilani though, the color drained from her face.
"Oh no," Marlene shook her head in a related fashion as her friends caught up to her.
"No, no, no, no, no," Sirius said in disbelief.
"She's dying," Remus's voice broke.
...
Inhale.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Exhale.
He watched as each breath Leilani took led oxygen into her body. She was okay.
Lily—being the quickest thinker—brought up the fact that Dumbledore already knew about Leilani, so they could logically bring Leilani to Madam Pomfrey and Craig. As that was the only plan they had, they went through with it by calling the Knight Bus and taking it to Hogwarts. The driver had given them a weird look as they hauled a still bleeding, half-dead Leilani onto the bus, but after Marlene screamed at him, they took off.
Now, hours later, Leilani slept in a hospital bed with Remus and Marlene sitting in the visitation chairs. Lily, James, and Sirius had went to get some food from the Great Hall for their breakfast. None of them had gotten a blink of sleep.
"I'm alive?" Leilani's voice startled him out of whatever alternate universe he had been in.
He thought he would never hear her voice again.
"You're alive," Remus confirmed with a parched throat.
"I'm alive!" Leilani cheered a little louder.
She's alive.
...
Author's Note:
I promise a happier/wholesome chapter soon! On the bright side, at least I updated, it sure has been a while. I'm sorry about the long wait, life has decided to be crueler to me than usual and I couldn't get the motivation to write.
I only have like five days of school left, so hopefully I'll be less stressed and can write more in the near future.
Lmao anyways thanks for reading
