"Did you bring the whole house with you?"
Jack complained while dragging the heavy suitcase up the stairs.
"I need a lot of things ok?"
Harper defended following him upstairs.
"You didn't have to bring so much, Harvey can lend you some things"
"You just got here and already fighting uh?"
Harvey said from the top of the stairs.
"Now my back hurts"
Jack whined once plopping down on the sofa, he has always been the whiny one.
"Today I thought we could meet up with my friends. I hope it's ok with you guys"
Harvey's family bought a small house in the mountains when he was little so he befriended a couple of people from the small town.
"As long as you didn't replace me then it's fine"
Jack joked.
They walked downhill, where everyone usually hangs out by the river.
It was sunny and Jack hated it.
"I can already feel the skin cancer killing my cells"
"You're gonna be fine"
Harvey said while keep walking.
"I hope the river it's cold so I can throw you in it and put a stop to your complaints"
Harper said with a mischievous grin.
Once at the river, the boys put down the beach towels and waited for Harvey's friends.
"Harv!"
A voice called and when the boy turned around a huge smile grew on his lips.
"Sonny!"
"How have you been?"
"Same old shit but a different day. By the way, they are my best friends, Jack and Harper"
"Hi, I'm Sonny"
He shook hands with both and when he looked at Harper, it was like the world stopped.
"Well..."
Harvey coughed lightly.
"We are just gonna stay here cause it's too hot to do anything"
"Sounds good to me"
Sonny smiled and sat next to Harper.
An hour passed by, Jack was sleeping, Harvey writing a song and Harper was reading.
"What are you reading?"
Sonny asked curiously.
"The song of Achilles"
"Ancient Greek uh?"
Harper just nodded.
"Can you read it out loud for me?"
The curly boy asked laying down in a comfortable position.
Harper was a bit taken back by the request but did it anyway.
So he read out loud, his voice mixed with the sound of the river and the soft melody of Harvey's guitar.
"He's really good at it"
Sonny commented looking at his friend who was sitting on a huge stone, feet in the icy cold water.
"When we were little he loved to perform in front of his parents, that's probably how it all started"
Harper smiled at the memory.
He still remembers it as if it was yesterday.
"So you sing too?"
"Oh no. I sing horribly, Harvey is the singer of the group"
"Well, you must have a role no?"
Sonny looked at Harper, golden locks moved by the gentle wind.
"I don't know what's my role to be honest"
Harper said softly closing the book.
"Jack, wake up"
"5 more minutes..."
"Jack, I won't carry you up the hill"
"You're a pain in the ass"
Jack opened one eye to glare at his best friend.
"But you love me"
And Harper pecked his forehead softly.
Sonny watched the scene with fond eyes.
Usually, after dinner, people hang out at the only bar in town so that's where the three boys were headed to.
They sat at a random table outside then shortly after Sonny joined them.
"Harvey, you're not gonna perform tonight?"
The raven boy pointed to the small stage.
"I don't know man"
"Please Harv, one song"
Jack begged.
"Mmm...ok sure"
When Harvey stepped on stage, people quietly clapped for him.
"I'm going front row to record a video. Don't drink my beer"
Jack warned.
"Don't worry, I'll drink all of it"
Harper joked.
Harvey started to sing 'Your song' by Elton John, Harper loved that song.
"Do you guys know each other since you were little?"
Sonny asked turning to look at the blonde boy.
"We grew up together, they are like brothers to me"
Harper would do anything for Jack and Harv, they will always come first.
"I love what you guys have. You all seem so caring with each other"
Sonny's eyes caught a glimpse of Harper's and saw the stars in them, it was a weird feeling to describe but he felt at peace with Harvey's voice in the background.
And they kept doing it all night.
"Shit, Jack do you have a cigarette?"
"No sorry man, ran out a couple days ago"
"I can go buy them for you"
Sonny volunteer.
"I don't want you to drive to the next town only for cigarettes. It's ok, I'll survive"
"Harper can go with him"
Jack suggested out of nowhere and Harper gave him the 'what the fuck are you doing' look.
"For me it's ok"
So the two of them took the car and drove through the small mountains roads just to buy a damn packet of cigarettes.
Harper stared outside the window all the time, his eyes fixed on the dark blue sky.
"What are you thinking about?"
Sonny asked keeping his eyes on the poorly illuminated road.
"I like this. The night I mean...It's peaceful"
"I like watching the stars"
Sonny added.
"Sometimes I wonder if there's someone up there that decides for us and gives us the illusion of being responsible for our own fate"
"You're always this deep?"
Harper turned to look at Sonny.
"You just ruined everything"
The boy pouted but Sonny put his hand on his knee, as a sign of comfort but he didn't really mean to do that.
"I- sorry"
He put it back right away on the wheel.
They bought the cigarettes in complete silence, neither of them knowing what to say.
It was awkward.
"Listen..."
Harper started before going back to the car.
"...You're Harv's friend and he's my best friend, I care about him. I don't want to put him in a difficult position"
Sonny just stood there and listened.
"I don't want to ruin everything"
Harper simply ended.
"He doesn't have to know"
Was all the curly boy said.
"What-?"
"Shh...they are gonna hear us"
Sonny put his index finger on Harper's soft lips.
"Are you insane?! They are gonna notice I'm gone"
Harper yelled and whispered at the same time.
"I wanted to say hi"
Sonny softly said, their faces an inch apart from each other.
"You can say it like normal people do"
"Not the same..."
The boy smirked.
"Harp?"
"Shit-"
Harper detached himself from Sonny and got out of the hiding spot.
"What were you doing?"
Jack asked confused.
"...A piss...couldn't hold it"
Jack didn't question it, just made a weird face and kept walking.
The hidden encounters, touches and kind gestures kept on going.
They didn't know what they were and never bothered to define it but you can't stop love when it's blossoming.
It was sweet and gentle and theirs but the bubble popped when Harper had to go back home.
-a year later-
"You should be happier, Harp"
Jack said while driving.
"I am happy"
"You don't look like it. I mean this is our tradition, if Harv sees you sad he's gonna slap you"
Jack joked and Harper found it funny actually but his mind was fixed on Sonny.
They didn't keep in contact after that summer, it was like their story got stuck in that perfect bubble, untouched.
In fact, when they saw each other again, all the memories came back.
The feeling of each touch, the adrenaline of all the sneak-outs, the pure and unconditional love they grew for each other, it all came back and Harper didn't know how to handle it.
"I need to pee"
He stood up suddenly.
"Do you want me to come with-"
"No. I'm fine"
He replied Jack quickly and walked towards the dark street.
"Harper..."
A soft voice called.
When the delicate moonlight hit Sonny's smooth skin, Harper just froze in his spot, back against the wall.
"Are you ok?"
"Do I look ok? I'm a mess and when Harvey is gonna find out..."
His eyes were watery.
Sonny slowly went in for a hug and Harper just broke down.
They held each other tightly, as the memory of last summer was trapped between them and they didn't want to let it go.
"Why are you so scared of Harv knowing, you can decide for yourself"
Sonny looked into his eyes caressing his cheek.
Harper melted.
"I don't know, I'm just scared"
He looked away but Sonny grabbed his chin.
"If you think I'll let everything go and move on, I'm sorry but no"
Harper stayed silent, eyes looking at everything but the boy in front of him.
"Tell me that you don't want it, that you don't feel the same then"
He rested Harper's hand on his heart.
"Look me in the eyes and tell me"
Sonny's heart was beating fastly but it was in sync with Harper's.
The blonde boy slowly pulled Sonny closer.
It was a hesitant kiss, both of them scared but longing for it.
It was soft and gentle, just pure love.
Sonny smiled at Harper and moved away a strand of hair, then peppered him with other kisses.
"Sonny, stop!"
Harper laughed cause it was ticklish.
"Took you forever"
Another voice broke the air.
"Shit-"
The two boys turned to look at Jack and Harvey.
"I- I can explain..."
Harper was already panicking so Sonny looped his arm around his waist to give him comfort.
"No need to explain, we were just wondering how long would it take"
Harvey smiled at them.
"You owe me two drinks, Harv!"
Jack said proudly.
"You bet on us?!"
Sonny asked offended.
"I thought you were gonna take longer to get together"
Harvey pouted.
Harper hid his face in Sonny's chest, he was so embarrassed.
"Harp, I would never get mad. I'm happy that two people that I love get to love each other...but if you break my best friend's heart I'm gonna break you"
Harvey said the last part to Sonny and then went to buy Jack his drinks.
"Should I be scared?"
Sonny asked laughing.
"I think Jack is scarier, he watches programs about serial killers in his free time"
