three
"Okay, gather yourself Kageyama, you have around an hour till the sun starts setting. Around an hour and a half till it gets real dark in the jungle..." Kageyama looked at his watch, the only piece of electronics that still worked perfectly.
Kageyama quickly looked around, trying to find something that would help him leave, he was searching for his footprints, but they were nowhere to be seen.
His chances of getting lost were actually not that big. 25% to be exact. Maybe even a bit less.
He could head to four different directions. If he went to one of them, he'd end up on a gravel road, leading back to the research team. Though, the walk would be long, but his four-wheeler is still parked, so he would be okay. The second direction would lead him to a little empty part of the forest, which then leads to a gravel road. Another one would lead straight to the tourist path, it's easy to find it, there is a bunch of signs there and all.
The last direction would just get him further into the jungle. God knows where he would end up. So, all he needed to do was to choose the right direction. If he had payed attention to where the sun was when he headed out, then he could easily find his way back. But he didn't. He was too distracted by parrots.
Kageyama sighed loudly, this was getting ridiculous! Any normal person would have either figured out the way back yet or just had a panic attack, but not Kageyama. He just stood there, completely unphased, but inside....inside he was screaming.
And so, with all of his strength he chose the west. He took five steps west and then turned around and headed east. His senses were telling him that the other side was the correct one. At one point it seemed like the trees that he was passing were familiar, perhaps this was the way back. Even so, the sun set faster than he imagined. Walking through the jungle was already dangerous, but at night? That's a whole suicide.
"Think Kageyama. You're an animal. It's late, you are not a predator, what do you do? Hide inside the tree? No, you're too big. Lose some weight Kageyama. In the ground? No, it rains. On the tree branch? Could work unless the monkeys decide to snack on me..." Kageyama whispered to himself, trying to keep his morale high and not lose his fucking mind.
He started looking around, looking for a tree high enough, but also with enough branches for him to climb. He had decided to save the battery on his flashlight and instead trusted the very little light that was still there. Honestly, Kageyama was starting to lose hope. All the trees were good, except there was no way to climb it. It's not as if he had claws, he had his nails done for God's sake.
For a mere milisecond he caught something in his vision, finally - a place good enough for a shelter. It was a some what empty area, some trees weren't as high, allowing him to climb them, and then climb the taller ones to reach a good enough branch he could stay on. Everything was well until Kageyama looked down and realized how high he was, which then resulted in him losing balance and almost falling down. He scrapped his knees, but that was still an injury.
As it was dark, Kageyama thought that if he looked around he could see where to go, he could see some lights from the village that was nearby, but all he saw was an endless sea of trees stretching for kilometres from all directions. Not even a smallest point of light seen anywhere.
The research team must be looking for him by now, perhaps he will be found soon. He would have climbed down and rested on the ground, but the weird sounds coming from underneath his feet made him shiver in fear. Good thing it wasn't raining at least.
Kageyama rested his head on his own shoulder, sighing again. "Stupid, stupid, stupid Kageyama....", he said quietly. The emotions inside had pent up enough and Kageyama allowed a few tears escape and roll down his cheeks.
He was scared. He felt terrible. Yet he was do bad at showing it. Through his blurry vision he looked at the moon and the sky full of stars. It was beautiful, so clear and so calming. The stars passed by ever so slowly, allowing Kageyama to name as many constellations as he knew in his head.
This was no time to cry. "Get yourself together Kageyama. They will find you. You'll find a way out", Kageyama tried ressuring himself, but how could he trust someone who constantly brought him down (yes, we're still talking about Kageyama, that boy is sure self-loathing).
He closed he eyes, listening to his surroundings. The tree leaves shimmering, sounds of animals and various bugs. It was oddly relaxing and satisfying. There he was, surrounded my nature he loved so much...
He would have continued to rest while peacefully listening to the amazing nature soundtrack if not the sound of something running.
Kageyama focused everything he had into his hearing abilities. One, no.. two animals. Wait, no.. Three. Three for sure.
One was definitely small, four legs, small steps. Another one... sounds like it's leaping. One, two, one, two - yes, it's leaping like cats do. An ocelot, perhaps?
But the last one, as much as Kageyama could listen, he couldn't make it out. It only sounded like one animal, but that was impossible.
It sounded like a human was running around on two legs.
