Amelie and Carmen walked down the footpath towards Sam and Colby's house. They had parked a few blocks away in hopes of their car not getting robbed or clamped, but were now regretting it as their feet were already hurting.

They pushed past a bunch of random people once they got in until they found at least one person they knew. Amelie grabbed hold of Carmens hand in order to not lose the girl, knowing every time they went anywhere together one of them got lost.

The house looked completely different than it had before. In the handful of times the two girls found themselves in it, it never looked like this.

There were people everywhere - obviously - and the usual cleanliness was gone out the window. The floors were slightly sticky and it made Amelie want to puke.

Luckily, before she did, she saw a mop of blond hair standing off to the side with his back turned to her. Amelie's face lit up as she and Carmen walked over to him. She could see she was talking to someone, but she couldn't see who.

She dropped Carmen's hand and grabbed both his shoulders, in any other circumstance she would have felt bad about interrupting his conversation, but the way his eyes lit up and a huge grin washed across his lips, she didn't think it was very necessary to.

"You came!" He yelled over the music and Amelie laughed.

"I texted you two minutes ago telling you I was outside." She shook her head as Sam pulled his phone from the back pocket on his black dress pants. He nodded now seeing the message, she watched as he typed something and then locked his phone, an evil smile on his face.

Amelie narrowed her eyes at him when she felt her phone vibrate against her stomach. She took the phone from the waistband of her skirt and read the message, NVM parties cancelled. She looked up at him and shook her head once more, "You're an idiot!"

Sam sent her an over dramatic wink before turning to Carmen and pulling her in for a short hug. Carm rolled her eyes, but hugged him back. While she may not have been a huge hugger, she knew she was never going to be free of Sam hugging her any chance he got.

He pulled away and Carmen fake gagged in his face, "You stink, bro."

"You speak in third person now?" The laugh that tumbled out of Amelie's mouth was considered an act of betrayal from Carmen.

Carmen rolled her eyes once more, "Whatever."

Sam had a shit eating grin on his face as he turned towards the dude he was talking to before they walked up.

"This is our neighbour, he moved in over Christmas when we weren't here." He moved to stand beside the chap, but the second both Amelie and Carmen's eyes landed on their jaws dropped.

"Callum, these are my friends, Amelie and Carmen." Sam was so blissfully unaware of the history that hung over the three that it almost made the situation ten times worse.

Amelie felt her stomach drop to her toes and her throat close up as her eyes landed on the man slightly taller than Sam.

She had been able to avoid talking or running into him for two - almost three years, but now over the past three days she had heard his name several times and now she was standing before him, with every emotion she was feeling written clear on her face. For someone who usually couldn't be read, she didn't even try and hid it.

"We actually, uh." He laughed. The bastard had the audacity to laugh. Amelie didn't care if it was because of nerves he actually fucking laughed, "We all went to school together."

We all went to school together. What a dickhead. Not even a "I dated your friend here for four years and then only days before our fifth anniversary she walked into my house, happy as could be only to find me with my dick in another girl." But no, school friends. That's all they were.

"Oh!" Sam was fine to laugh because he didn't know, it didn't piss her off as much, but how could he just stand there and be normal about this.

She turned her whole body around, "I need a drink." She mumbled, mostly to herself. She felt tears prickle in her eyes, but she was not about to cry over him. Never again. Especially when it took her an hour to do her makeup.

Amelie ignored when Sam and Carmen called after her. She just walked straight until she found a table which had at least six bottles of liquor on it. She grabbed one of the bottles and without reading what it was, poured it into a stupid red solo cup she thought only existed in Hollywood films. She downed it in one gulp, grimacing when it burned her throat. She repeated this process a handful of times until she heard her name being called from a much closer distance.

"Amelie!" Sam shouted. making Amelie turn around to face him. She leaned against the table as he spoke again, "I am so sorry! I had no idea. I just got an earful about what he did from Carm."

She blew out a breath, "It's fine, Sam." He didn't look too sure, "Really."

"Do you want to go home? I won't be offended- Colby won't either." Sam told her, feeling so bad about the whole situation.

Amelie shook her head and bit on the flesh on the inside of her mouth, "I don't want to go home, idiot. YOU invited me here. I'm not gonna let some fuckface, slut of a man ruin my night."

"Are you sure?" He asked, "You can go home if you want. I'll call you an uber. I know you just drank..." He pulled out his phone, but before he could do anything, Amelie grabbed it from his hands and placed it back in his pocket.

She placed her hands on both of his shoulders, "I. Don't. Want. To. Go. Home." She pressed, shaking him with every word, showing him she really did mean it.

Sam held onto her wrists and let out a small laugh, "Do you want me to kick him out?"

Amelie pondered on that for a moment, but in the end she shook her head, "No. We're both adults."

"Do you want me to get you really drunk so you can forget about him?"

At that, Amelie's whole face lit up, "Are you trying to get me drunk, Golbach?" She lowered her voice and leaned closer to him, "At least take me to dinner first."

Sam dipped his head for a moment before looking at her, his head tilted slightly, "If I recall correctly, I've taken you out for dinner many times... And Lunch... Never breakfast though, that's funny." Amelie laughed as he let go of her wrist and backed away. It looked like he was going to walk away, putting Amelie on high alert, but instead he took a step closer, "Oh, and by the way... I wouldn't need you drunk, don't worry."

Amelie's mouth snapped shut immediately, which only made his grin widen, especially when he saw the red began to creep up her neck.

Sam reached down and grabbed her hand, "Come on." He said, whisking her away as she just stared at him bewildered.

Damn.

Amelie didn't know what time it was, but she did know she was going to have a massive hangover in the morning. She and Sam had split up sometime past ten and now she was sat beside a girl called Tara and her boyfriend Jake. In the short time she had been sat here she had been informed that Jake, Sam, Colby and a few of their other friends had all lived together a few years ago.

She enjoyed the short girls' company, mainly because she could be as silent as could be and the conversation would still be flowing. She liked people like that. People she could be quiet around and it wouldn't get awkward and weird. It was one of the main reasons she and Carmen were friends. Carmen could waffle the head off her and she wouldn't care.

She was currently being updated on some random gossip surrounding Tara's friend group - people she didn't know, and from the sound of it, people she was glad she didn't know.

"Oh, I have to go!" The girl yelled, "I will be getting your number off of Sam or Colby, so if you get a random message at, like, ten pm tomorrow about the situation don't be alarmed."

Amelie laughed, "Have I told you I love your valley girl accent?" She said, unknowingly copying it.

"Several times!" Tara leaned over and hugged Amelie, taking her by surprise. She quickly stood up, leaving Amelie to blow her a kiss as she went.

Yeah, she was wasted.

She watched as both Tara and Jake left her vision and Colby Brock appeared in front of her.

"There he is!" She yelled over the music as he moved to sit on the couch next to her. She turned the bottle of alcohol she had been holding since she had wandered off with Sam hours ago towards him, but he put a hand up and shook his head. She shrugged.

"Where the hell have you been?!" He shouted at her.

She placed her pointer finger on her chest, "Me?" She asked in a high pitched voice, "I've been here for, like, an hour. Sam left me and I met Tara and Jake - Cool people. Hot."

Colby laughed loudly at that, "I think I will take that." He grabbed the drink from her hand, making her frown, "Sam's been looking for you for ten minutes! Bro couldn't find you anywhere. He said he went to use the bathroom and then when he came out you were nowhere to be seen."

"That's where he went?" She asked, "I just thought he left. I got distracted and walked off."

"Come on." Colby said, standing up. He grabbed both her hands and pulled her up off the chair, ignoring her yells of protest, "It's almost midnight and I am not spending it alone! I'm kissing someone, whether it be you or anyone else I can get my hands on."

Amelie threw him a disgusted look, "Those lips are not coming anywhere near me anytime soon, bitch. Keep them over there."

"Oh, we know who you would rather kiss-"

"Sam!" Amelie shouted when they walked closer to him. He was standing beside Carmen who looked like she wanted to kill him, but what was new?

Sam's eyes flashed with confusion before they finally landed on the brunette he had spent twenty minutes looking for, "I was looking for you!"

"Of course you were." She rolled her eyes, "Who wouldn't be looking for me?"

"Always so humble."

Amelie smiled sweetly at him, "You know me."

Carmen narrowed her eyes at the pair, "Disgusting." She took a sip of her drink before placing it on the counter and walking off, Colby following behind her, the same expression on his face.

Amelie moved to stand where Carmen was, only a few inches closer to the blond, "She gets mean when she drinks." She frowned.

"Have I ever met sober Carmen?" Sam joked, referring to the fact she was always slightly mean to him.

Amelie snorted, "She's a sweetheart really."

"Whatever you say, Mellie." She smiled at the nickname. Like she always did.

A comfortable silence developed around them, and as much as Amelie was a comfortable silenced hater, whenever she was with Sam and the conversation died down... It was never not comfortable. The loud humming of music danced around them, and while Sam stood there just happy to have her in his presence, Amelie was trying to listen in on a couples conversation from beside him. Once she heard the word, "Sex" she quickly butted out.

"New year is in twenty seconds." Sam told her. The girl's eyes went wide. She grabbed his hand and started dragging him through the house, "Where are you taking me?"

"We're not spending it 'alone' and I saw Carm and Colby walk this way." They ventured through the crowd until they found their friends.

They stood beside the two, and to be honest Amelie wasn't even sure their presence was known until Colby threw her a welcoming smile which he immediately got back.

"Five... Four... Three... Two... One!!"

The entire atmosphere changed in the room as loved ones began wrapping their arms around each other and planting sloppy kisses on each other's lips.

Amelie threw her hands up and she and Carmen immediately found each other in front of their two friends. The two girls threw their arms around each other, happy to bring the new year in together. They rocked back and forth and side to side for a moment before pulling away and kissing each other on the cheeks. Carmen pulled away and did the same to both Sam and Colby, catching them both by surprise.

Amelie scrunched up her nose as Colby pulled her in for a hug, "If you don't kiss him I will."

"That's gay." She mumbled into his shoulder.

"Whatever." He said, taking Carmen's hand and walking away from the two.

Amelie turned to Sam who was bright red having heard their short conversation. She laughed loudly, but stood on her tippy toes to wrap her arms around his shoulders.

"Happy 2022, Sam."

"Happy New years, Amelie."

They stood like that for a moment too long; Just happy to be wrapped up in each other.

When they pulled away Amelie weighed out her two options. Be rejected or potentially ruin a friendship you don't ever want to break.

"So, are you going to kiss me or do I have to do all the work around here?" She asked, her voice cracking with nerves.

Sam's jaw dropped. Like. Actually dropped.

His hands - that had never left her waist - tightened their grip ever so slightly as he leaned in, leaving less than an inch between them. His eyes travelled from her eyes to her lips and then back up, silently asking if she actually wanted it.

She didn't even have a chance to say anything before his lips were on hers in a hungry kiss. Her hands immediately travelled up to hold the back of his neck, tangling in his hair, making sure his mouth stayed firmly on hers. The world around them seemed to fade away slowly.

Kissing Sam Golbach was not on her bingo card for 2022 - that was a lie. It absolutely was just not this early in the year.

They both pulled away. Sam placed his forehead on hers as her eyes opened slowly. Neither let go, scared that if they did the moment would turn out to not be real.

You could kiss your friend on new years and have it not be weird right?

If she was any braver she would have kissed him again, but she wasn't.
