( thirty-eight )
Harley hated standing in the night. Not because the sky was dark, or because there was a chill running up her spine, but because the last time she had been this terrified during nightfall was when grounders invaded their camp, back at the dropship. They brought Lincoln back to Camp Jaha, and Clarke had left once more to have a talk with the grounder that intimidated Harley, who she had learned was Commander Lexa. Most of her run in with grounders didn't go well, but she hoped that this commander was merciful enough and would spare them.
The wait for Clarke to return was excruciating. Harley was stuck in the crowd, staring at the gate with wide eyes, until she saw a shadow in the fog. There were three, two riding on horses and holding up torches with a smaller figure in between. She breathed in relief, when seeing them become closer and recognizing Clarke approaching the gate. However, the guards in front of the crowd lifted their guns forward, Bellamy and Clover among them.
"Hold on!" Harley could hear Clover shout. She nudged her way forward, mumbling soft 'excuse me' a few times, until she was nearby the gate. She could see Clover nod to Bellamy, gesturing towards Clarke to point her out.
"It's Clarke!" Bellamy exclaimed. "Open the gate!" Major Byrne began barking orders, warning the other guards before allowing one guard to pull the lever that would open it. The grounders remained outside as Clarke strolled in, but the guards still remained cautious with their firearms pointed forward. Harley could see the look of dismay plastered over Clarke's face, and it worried her severely. Something had to be wrong.
There was a blur racing past Harley, who after turning her head, could see it was Finn. Clarke was immediately troubled as he approached her, whirling around and ordering the guards. "Shut the gate!" It shut quickly, trapping the grounders on horses outside as Clarke grabbed Finn's upper arm and tugged him forward.
Harley followed after them, needing to know what was happening. If it was good news, Clarke wouldn't be so distressed. Abby was the first to catch her daughter in an embrace, relieved before pulling away. "What did she say?" She questioned. "Is there a chance for a truce?" By now, they had drew a crowd, mixed from residents and members of the guard, all wanting to know their fate that was left in the hands of the commander.
Nodding back, Clarke uttered a single word. "Yes."
But there was something off. Clarke wasn't acting pleased, even somewhat thrilled that she was offered a truce for peace. "Clarke, what is it?" Harley asked, leaning forward. "What's wrong?"
Clarke looked sick as she spoke, forcing herself to look at Finn. "They want you. If we want a truce, we have to give them Finn." Harley felt her world spin, her jaw falling into a gape. She could hardly stand being around Finn, she was pretty frightened of him, but to hear that they had to pass over Finn to the grounders, for what she assumed wasn't going to be a fun trip wasn't soothing. "That's their offer."
"That's not an offer," Raven practically exclaimed, joining the crowd and standing beside Harley. She could see the stress on the mechanic, and Harley knew it was because Finn was all she had left.
"It's punishment," Finn finished for her, not as shocked as the rest of them. "For what happened at the village. Blood for blood."
From the group of guards, Bellamy shook his head in disbelief. "That's insane." Harley couldn't help but agree, despite her distaste for Finn. It wasn't a rightful offering for peace, to kill someone. Violence doesn't seal a truce, it would haunt everyone from both sides forever. She couldn't imagine forgetting the death of someone, even Finn, in such a violent way. Peace couldn't come out of it, no matter what the grounder's believed, she thought. Finn may have done wrong but his death wouldn't make peace.
Chancellor Abby was considering it, mulling over the very little options they had, seemingly strained. "If we refuse?" She asked Clarke.
"They attack."
Harley exhaled sharply, backing up, being left in a state of incredulity. The choices they were left with weren't many, and would end violent in any attempt they would make. The residents of Camp Jaha began shouting, all with terrified expressions. They all wanted to give up Finn, the idea of the grounders invading not settling. "Easy, people!" Major Byrne warned, holding her hand up.
"Give him to the grounders!" One man practically growled, stepping closer to Finn.
At the daring words, Raven whirled around and shoved him. "Back off!" She hissed, shooting him a dark glare. The man went to retaliate, but was held back by Bellamy and another guard, telling him to calm down.
While Clarke attended to Raven, assuring her that nothing would happen to Finn, Harley felt a tug on her wrist before she was being pulled out of the crowd. She could hear the man continue to speak, loud and strict. "I'm not dying for him! Spacewalker burned three months of oxygen from The Ark, we should've floated him a long time ago!" With one last tug, Harley was pulled out of the crowd just as it had gotten ugly. Raven had punched the man, and than Major Byrne, before being restrained and pulled away.
Looking over her shoulder, Harley noticed it was Clover tugging her away, staring at her with wide eyes. "You can't get in the middle of that," Clover declared over the shouts from the fight that had broken out.
Harley shook her head, knowing different. This was something that she had to be involved in, when it came to a life and peacemaking. It was everything she had spoke for. "No, I have to."

Major Byrne and Abby ordered that everyone over a certain age had to be armed with a gun, and the feeling of the handgun's weight strapped to Harley's side didn't make her feel any safer even it should. She had been more than tired of being forced to carry a gun, as if the person ordering her to do so considered that she could shoot.
Because of the looming threat, knowing that Lexa could break the truce at any time, she had chosen to remain inside of Camp Jaha for now, safer in the medical ward. No matter who was there with her, Harley felt safe.
Lincoln was in the room, handcuffed tightly to a bed. Octavia was by his side, which Harley had mostly expected. Clarke and Abby had come in moments ago, eyeing him wearily. He was almost back to his normal self, and had improved a lot. Harley was glad, even if he held a deep remorseful expression full of emotion most of the time. "Doctor Griffin," Harley spoke up, catching the doctor's attention. "Lincoln isn't a reaper anymore. Can we take the restraints off?" She questioned, polite. "He doesn't need them anymore." She imagined how painful they were, rubbing into his wrists.
As if Harley's request flipped a switch inside of Lincoln, his hands tightened into fists and he yanked at the restraints that pulled back, digging into his wrists. "Yes, I do." Harley softened, feeling stricken with sorrow as Lincoln began coughing harshly. He didn't deserve to suffer like this.
"Just tell us. Is there a way to make peace?" Abby asked, desperate.
Lincoln hesitated for a moment before answering. "Did she leave riders behind?" Abby nodded, informing him that there was two just outside the gate. "They're waiting for Finn. You don't have much time to decide," he informed them.
"She can't expect us to just hand over one of our own people," Octavia added, pacing forward and leaning closer to Lincoln. "Would she do that?"
"She wouldn't let the rest of her people die to protect a murderer," Lincoln retorted firmly. "If you don't do this, she will kill everyone in this camp. Finn took eighteen lives, the Commander is offering to take just one in return. Take the deal."
Harley shook her head, despairing. She didn't like Finn, could hardly be around him without feeling repulsed, but a violent death couldn't be a pawn in a peace treaty. He needed to be punished, but not like this. "But this isn't right," she spoke, rising into a standing position. "It's not about handing over one of our own people. It's not a way to make peace. We were the first people to come to your cave and offer peace, for a reason. It doesn't have to end like this."
"He massacred my village," Lincoln shot back. "Some of the dead were my friends. Try and tell them that."
"But that wasn't Finn," Clarke argued. "You know that's not who he is."
"It is now," Lincoln replied, this time much more calm. "We've all got a monster inside of us, Clarke, and we're all responsible for what it does when we let it out." Harley felt a sharp shiver pass through her body and she shuddered at his words. She didn't feel like a monster, and she couldn't imagine one inside of her.
The air was quiet and tense around them for a moment, all comprehending Lincoln's statement about monsters, before Abby broke it but unable to meet Lincoln's eyes. "What will they do to him?"
"Fire," Lincoln began. "Because he killed the innocent, it starts with fire." Harley bit her lower lip, grief-stricken with the idea of that not even being the beginning. "They'll take his hands, his tongue, his eyes. And anyone who grieves will have a turn with the knife." Even Octavia, the strong one, shook her head and covered her lower mouth. "At sunrise, the Commander will end it with her sword. But I've never known anyone to survive until the sword."
Words were stuck in Harley's throat, leaving a lump. She still tried to speak, the words coming out broken and full of sentiment. "T-That.. That's so.. barbaric.." She couldn't believe someone could do something so cold and emotionless, counting Finn's massacre. She couldn't even make a full sentence to explain how dreadful it was.
"He killed eighteen," Lincoln mumbled. "He will suffer the pain of eighteen deaths. Then, we can have peace." That's all Harley wanted; but not like this.

While in Camp Jaha, there wasn't much disturbances. Sometimes two people would have a short spat, Harley remembered, but they would be pulled away by the guards before it would become out of hand. However, every member of the camp were frightened which led to no one thinking rationally. All she knew was that they wanted Finn out, to be passed over to the grounders, and that was confirmed by the shouts.
Harley had occupied the medical ward, helping Octavia with Lincoln, but she knew she had to be out there to stop it. She excused herself, dashing down the halls to find the source of the noise. She turned the corner of a hall, her eyes widening in surprise when arriving just in time to see Bellamy hit an older man with the bottom of his gun to fiercely protect Finn. Clarke had taken his hand and pulled him along, Bellamy treading after them, to where Harley assumed was the exit.
Frozen in place, Harley watched as the men that attempted to take Finn helped their wounded one up. She hadn't known what to do, and needed to find the power to move. She didn't want him to suffer for peace, and wanted to help, as she always did.
Feeling a presence from beside her, Harley nearly jumped out of her skin, turning her head quickly, but calming when seeing it was Raven. Despite her relaxing, the other looked stressed, panicking even as she watched Finn be dragged away. "Are Clarke and Bellamy going to help Finn?" Harley questioned. She couldn't yet think of a place that could be safer than Camp Jaha.
Raven nodded. "They're bringing him to the dropship. I have to go and cut the power to the fence and meet them there."
The answer caught Harley off guard, shocked to hear they'd bring him outside of the gate to try and protect him in the woods. She figured it was their best shot, but still wasn't any better. "Wow," she breathed out.
Harley didn't notice the way Raven had went rigid, moving her head and apparently hit with a sudden idea. "You should come too," she suggested, finally speaking. "Go and find Murphy, bring him. It's better to have more people to help Finn."
Suddenly smiling at the offer, Harley nodded, accepting it and not catching onto whatever plan was in Raven's head. All she figured was that it was an invite including both her and Murphy. "We'll be there," she promised before taking off again, away from the commotion, and to find Murphy.
