"Minjun, did you forget anything?" Jimin asks as he holds out the jacket for him. Minjun stretches out his arms and slips them into the sleeves. The father looks elated at his son as he sees him trying to slip into his shoes. However, the little boy fails to get in, which is when Jimin decides to help him.
"We have to hurry a little. Uncle Jin will be there soon." He smiles as his son looks at him with wide eyes as if considering what he has said.
"Jinnn..." Minjun squeals in response, agogged to finally see his uncle, though not realising how hard he is making it for Jimin to tie his other shoe. "Min... keep still for a moment, please. I can't tie your shoes otherwise," Jimin says, but then sees Minjun stand still and look down at him. It's adorable, really.
"...Okay, done," he exhales in relief and takes the colourful Paw Patrol themed backpack in his hand to put it on Minjun.
"You got everything, baby?" Jimin takes his hand in his own hand in response and looks back at the clothing hangers again.
Doesn't look like we left anything behind...
Anyway, with the few jackets and shoes still hanging there, he doesn't see any that could belong to them.
Minjun nods silently and pulls Jimin's hand behind him to signal that they can go. And so they walk towards the exit until Minjun suddenly stops and makes Jimin look down at him in wonder.
Before Jimin can say anything he lets go of his hand and runs back the few metres they have been walking. He alacritously grabs what he has forgotten and runs back with small steps. With full pride, Minjun holds out a rolled-up white paper to Jimin. The elder takes it with a frown on his face and unrolls it, revealing a drawing of 2 adults holding hands with a child.
This is by no means the first drawing that Minjun proudly handed him, but it's still the first drawing that this time shows not one adult but two. He swallows hard at the sight.
What does it mean? Is he unhappy that he only has one father? Am I not enough?
He had told Minjun relatively early that he was a single parent and had no other parent, but he still didn't tell him why, because he wanted to wait until he was older.
"Juju... Who is that?" he asks as he squats down and points to one person.
"Appa!" he beams and claps his hands.
"And this?" Jimin now points at the other person and tension and a dark feeling runs through him, leaving him in a fit of sweaty hands. Could it really be...?
"Uncle Jin!"
To say relief is rushing through his body is an understatement. So many emotions going through his body at the same time and so many thoughts racing in his head.
"I'm sure Jin will be happy to hear that," he then finally says, taking another quick look at the drawing. It looks like a complete family: father, father and son.
How much Jimin would like that for his son, it makes him sad to see children who were out in the city with both parents. Of course, Jin is something of a father figure to him, and yet it is not the same as having a mother or father by his side, as Jin is often away from the area.
But Jimin is not ready to get involved and trust someone new. The memories of what happened still feel like yesterday.
"Let's go to him then." Thus he grabs Minjun's hand and holds the drawing in his other hand. They walk to the car and drive home, where they get surprised by Jin who's already waiting for them and welcomes Minjun with a smile on his lips and open arms.
"Uncle Jin!" the latter shouts joyfully from the front door into the flat and runs towards the older one with quick steps. Chuckling erupts from the elder as he watches him with fond eyes.
"I missed you so much, Juju... and how big you've grown. Feels like forever when I last saw you." With a sigh on his lips he hugs the little one to him and closes his eyes for a brief moment.
"You're here already. Thought you'd be here a little later. I haven't cooked anything yet," Jimin pouts a little as he comes back from Minjun's room and eyes the two in the hallway.
"Yeah, I didn't have much to do at the hotel anymore, so I thought, might as well leave early. Besides, you don't have to worry about food. I have a key, after all, and I figured that since I'm here, I could take some of the work off your hands." Jin smiles at him with Minjun in his arms.
Only now does Jimin notice an unassumingly delicious smell of food in the air. He hadn't paid attention to it at all when he entered the flat.
"You cooked?"
Jin shrugs as if it were a matter of fact, "Yes, even cooked one of Minjun's favourite dishes. It's all still on the cooker because I didn't know when exactly you'd be coming."
With renewed curiosity, Jimin enters the kitchen and looks in amazement at the cooker on which there are 3 cooking pots and a container next to it. Jin has once again made far too much.
"You really made a lot this time. I'm not even sure whether we can finish all this."
Jin shrugs and signals to the fridge. "What's a fridge and freezer for? Don't worry so much Min, hm? You know I like to cook for you two, especially since you're so busy at work."
"Hm... but you are too," Jimin hums and threads his fingers through his blond strands of hair, putting food on his and Minjun's plate. "Despite how stressful it has been recently, I am thankful to my uncle who got me the job interview and that I am a fast learner, otherwise I don't think I would be with Minjun where I am now."
Jin nods tentatively, closing the lid of the pot and follows Jimin to the table, "That's true...It really surprised me when you called me on the phone saying you got a job as an administrative assistant."
"I don't know the reason for her hiring me whether it was for my uncle or that she was convinced of me but I am happy that she did. I sometimes wondered about the real reason. Perhaps it's just me thinking too much into it." Jimin shrugs, sighing as he shoves some food into his mouth and glances at Minjun to see him eat with glazing contentment.
"I just hope that I can go to university at some point and after that work my dream job. Don't misunderstand, I like this job but having a two-year-old at home... it's quite stressful."
"I believe you, no doubt. If I had more time recently I would also take him for a few nights, so you can go to a club or meet a nice man or do whatever floats your boat," Jin says and hears Jimin groan at the implied content of a suggestion. "You are young. You have to go out more alone."
"I go outside alone when I go to work and come back or do some shopping," Jimin mumbles and earns a raised eyebrow from his brother. Of course, Jimin knows what he means but Jimin simply doesn't want to date. Most people his age he meets are still in a teenager phase... and if not, who would already be interested in having the full package? Becausehe knows one thing: he will leave Minjun for no man in the world. Juju is all the world to him. So it's either both or no one.
"You know what I mean," Jin states dryly and begins to eat, glancing at Jimin who helps Minjun eat. It feels so nostalgic seeing this with his own eyes after he had barely any time to meet up, paperwork piling up on his desk. It feels like at that age they grow up so fast. You blink once and they grow a few centimetres.
Jimin hums and picks up his fork to start eating himself, "Also don't worry about not taking Minjun so often. Dad is still there if I wanted to do that. He is happy every time he gets to spend time with his grandson."
"Okay, okay fine. I won't mention dating again and yeah, I know how much he loves him. He spoils him so much. It's basically written all over his face how happy he is about seeing him and Minjun too. Isn't that right, Juju?"
Instead of answering, Minjun hoovers up the bowl of ice cream and fresh strawberries as a dessert. They have to smile when they see the smudgy bits of ice cream on his chin.
"God he's so shy and cute. Do you think he will soon talk more?" Jin whispers whereupon Jimin only shrugs.
"I honestly don't know. He barely talks with strangers. At this point, I don't even know whether it's normal to act like that at his age. Maybe he's just a late bloomer."
"...or maybe there's going to be a person who succeeds in getting him to talk more. Have some faith." Jimin only snorts and shakes his head. Maybe it has something to do with the nightmares he has recently had. He wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.
"Juju, do you want to go with us to the park now?"
"Yesss," Minjun squeals and happily jumps from the chair, too excited to contain his feelings. It causes the adults to erupt in giggles as they follow him towards the door. Quickly they throw on their jackets and shoes, leaving the apartment hand in hand with Minjun.
As soon as they reach the park Minjun lets go at once from their hands and heads towards the big green meadow with a football in his hand that they brought. The breeze is fresh as they play all together. Seeing Minjun happy is Jimin's world. So pure, ebullient and excited about the smallest things.
Neither of them knows how much time passes by as they play but neither do they really care. At some point they decide to take a breakโor well, more like Jimin, saying he will get something little to eat from an food truck he has seen not far away. In both hands, he holds food and a water bottle is tucked underneath his arm as he returns.
Sharing the meal together, adults sit on a bench and watch Minjun kicking the ball a few metres in front of them, forth and back before coming up to get some food. It's cute really, making Jimin take photos and a few videos.
"If he keeps up practising playing football he might want to become a football player in the future." Jimin nods and gets up from the bench, throwing away the rubbish. His gaze rests on his son for a few seconds. "That might be true, but given the shy person, he is... I don't know. Nevertheless, I will support him no matter what he will become."
"Otherwise I would be no good parent," he adds and shrugs, "...and as long as he's happy, that's the most important thing."
"You already are a good father to him. Seeing you with him makes me sometimes wonder whether I get the chance to become a father as well. Well, for that I need to work less and find a boyfriend first but you know what I mean..."
Jimin throws him a look. "Jin, you don't necessarily need a boyfriend in order to have a child. There's always an option, be it adoption or whatever."
"You might be right," he sighs, supporting his head with his hand whereupon the elbow rests on his knee. "There are always children that so desperately wish to get adopted. It breaks my heart thinking about them."
"Hm, I agree with that. I wish more people who are kind and care about children would adopt one. I would do that perhaps, who knows, but I am barely 20 and already have a full-time job and a little munchkin. I wouldn't be able to take care of another one. Maybe you get the chance to do that in the future though."
"I hope so. I like the idea of it."
Jimin grins and changes the subject, leading the conversation in another direction. They keep chatting with each other until Minjun walks up to them with the football in his hand, claiming that he's tired and for Jimin to take him into his arms who genuinely complies. The way back is mostly quiet due to Minjun sleeping in his arms and clutching onto his jacket.
For Jimin, it's more than perfect. Together with Jin by his side, they are complete, they're his little world. What he doesn't know is that this will soon be shaken by someone else.
