The bikes started arriving in hoards at the end of the bridge. After that, all of the original group seemed to disperse and get lost in the chaos. June took the opportunity to go to the grocery store, because that seemed to be what everyone wanted to do. She wasn't hungry even slightly, but hoards of kids pushing shopping carts swarmed around her as if they had just been told the world was ending. Perhaps they had.

She felt somewhat numb watching from the entrance area. Had she thought things out, it would have been smarter to do an inventory of her kitchen and see what she needed, but it didn't seem anyone was thinking at that time. Her phone began to buzz, pulling her from her daze, and she stepped outside of the story to answer.

"Hello?"

"Hey..." It was Allie, sounding quiet and unsure. "Where are you? I just wanted to talk to someone."

"The grocery store," June answered, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "You should probably come here, it's getting kind of out of control."

"I'm not far, I'll be there in five."

With that, June clicked off her phone and stuffed it back in her back pocket. She realized that at the surface, her and Allie don't exactly seem similar. But, with her and Will fighting and with Cassandra stressing about solving everything, Allie was just as alone as June in this. So, maybe they needed each other to lean on, and maybe it wasn't such a bad thing June had stopped to talk to her the night before.

Allie appeared in the parking lot shortly after their call ad bounded up to June. Her face was solemn and June wasn't sure if she had been crying, but she decided not to press her on it.  Wordlessly they turned and looked at the chaos unfolding in front of them, then walked in to join it.

They took a few steps in and eyed the kids running around. June was shocked to realize it was just as chaotic as before. Kids fought for food and pushed their shopping carts and seemed completely unaware of those around them. Allie drew in a deep breath and glanced over at June before realizing someone had come up on her right. June and Allie both realized Will had joined them at the same time. June awkwardly averted her eyes from the boy and braced for an argument.

"Fuck, huh?" Allie spoke, shaking her head as Will took in their surroundings. Will gave a slight nod, mouth agape, but his lack of response didn't seem to bode well for Allie. "I called you before." This made the boy look at her for the first time. "I just needed someone to talk to."

Her words made sense to June, making her realize Will had been her first call. The realization didn't exactly hurt her, because she knew if she had any other friends here, she would call them first. June awkwardly bit down on her lip, feeling as if she were interrupting a moment but not knowing whether she should walk away or not.

Allie moved from the girl's side so she was now standing directly in front of Will. Although tears pooled in her eyes, June could sense the anger radiating off of her. As she cocked her head to the side and looked the boy up and down, June made a mental note never to make the girl mad.

"You're really not talking to me?" She gave a few moments for him to speak up, but when he didn't, she continued. "What I did is not the worst crime in the world, and given everything, can't I get a tiny break?"

"We should get some food, before it's all gone." Was all he responded before placing a hand on the girl's shoulder. And while it seemed to be enough to appease Allie that he was simply talking to her, his choice of words made June want to slap him.

"I'll catch up with you guys," June informed, wanting to give the two some space.

"Meet back here in 10?" Allie offered, wiping at her eyes when Will wasn't looking.

June gave a simple nod of the head then went off in search of a shopping cart. When she found one, she leaned against it and did her best to avoid running into others. She wasn't really sure what she was looking for, but she'd hope she'd know when she found it.

Turns out, the only thing she ended up finding that she wanted was Elle. The girl was alone in the vegetable aisle, hurriedly grabbing every bag of baby carrots. June furrowed her eyebrows at the scene, knowing no one could possibly need that many carrots. Before she could really think about what she was doing, she pushed her cart up to the girl.

"No, you can't have any," Elle spoke bitterly without even looking up at the girl.

"Oh, um, no, I didn't want any carrots," June replied awkwardly, internally cursing her lack of social skills.

"Oh," This seemed to draw Elle's attention, because she stopped grabbing carrots and looked up at the girl. "Well, what did you want?"

"I saw you dance once," June was speaking before she really thought about what she was going to say, and it all felt like it was coming off as weird. "And, uh, you were really good. I never got a chance to tell you that before."

"Oh, well, thanks," Elle responded, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

The interaction seemed to be over, and all June wanted to do was slap herself for how awkward it was. She gave the girl one last smile before turning on her heels and scurrying away, not even bothering to bring her empty cart with her. Now, she was on a mission to find Allie, just to take her mind of off all of the embarrassment she was feeling.

She found the curly-headed blonde scoping out the meat section alone. She was tempted to ask where Will had run off to, but decided against it. She scurried up to the girl and did her best to not look as flustered as she felt.

"Hey, you okay?" Allie tore her eyes from the meats to look over the girl. "Your face is all red."

"Yeah, I'm good," June nodded her head and stuffed her hands in her back pockets.

Just as June had calmed down from her completely uncomfortable interaction with the beautiful blonde ballerina, she rounded the corner with another girl hot on her heels. Allie and June seemed to catch wind of an altercation between the two at the same time, and Allie did not seem happy about it.

"Are you serious? Can I have a bag?" The unknown girl pleaded with Elle.

"No, you can't," Elle responded firmly, not even gracing the girl with a glance.

"But there's none left, Elle,"

"That's not my problem." She retorted.

"You're such a bitch,"

The words seemed to strike a chord with Elle, because she immediately spun on her heels with a bag of baby carrots in hand and shoved them into the girl's chest. The girl rolled her eyes and walked away with her bag of carrots while Elle turned back around and pushed her cart forward.

Before June could realize what she was doing or stop her, Allie had turned her cart and blocked Elle's path. Elle's cart collided into the side of Allie's and the girl's head shot up angrily.

"What the fuck?" Elle exclaimed.

"You ever see that movie The Poseidon Adventure?"

"What?" Elle questioned and June furrowed her eyebrows, wondering where the girl was taking this. Elle tried pushing around the cart, but Allie blocked it with her hand and inched forward.

"It's about a ship and it capsizes, and the captain, he comes into this big, upside-down ballroom, he tells everybody to stay where they are, that they're gonna be rescued. And six of them, they decide to climb up, to the bottom of the ship. And some of them live, and no one else does. And ever since I watched it, I always wondered what would I do? Would I stay put? Would I climb up? You know, like, who am I in this story? Am I the one who has to you know, die so that everyone else lives? Am I the one who turns out weaker than expected? Am I the one who's only doing the best when the going is good? I know I'm not the heroine. 'Cause that's my sister. So who?" Allie looked around, as if lost in thought. "Anyway, I'm telling you, the one that you are right not, you don't want to be that one."

Elle searched Allie's eyes for a moment before giving a slight nod. Her eyes then drifted towards June, but it was if she couldn't meet her gaze. Allie freed her grip on the cart and with her head down, Elle pushed away and the two girls watched as she went.

"A little harsh, Allie," June scoffed, turning to face Allie as Elle disappeared.

"She needed to hear it," Allie shrugged before looking back at her cart. "Come on, let's keep looking."

"What do you know about her?" June questioned as they browsed the food selections, trying her best to sound nonchalant.

"Who? Elle?" Allie questioned back, picking up a box of tea and turning it in her hands.

"Yeah," June nodded before peering over at the tea and speaking. "That kind is awful."

Allie nodded and put the box back on the shelf, opting for another brand that June approved of. It was clear she wasn't very interested in talking about Elle Tomkins, but June would probably push it anyways.

"I don't know, she doesn't have many friends, apparently she'll fight with you over baby carrots. Why?"

"Just curious," June shrugged as they walked on, eyes scanning over the shelves. "Oh and Allie?"

"Yeah?" She paused, actually looking up this time.

"You can be the heroine, too." Allie looked at the girl confused, so she pressed on. "It's just, you said your sisters the heroine, so you can't be. But, you can. I mean, you are. Think about all the movies with more than one male hero. Like, the justice league or the Avengers or whatever. I think it's time there's more than one heroine."

Allie's lips burst into a wide smile. She wasn't used to people not making her feel less than her sister, so the moment felt refreshing.

"Those are superheroes," Allie laughed, only referencing heroes before. June blushed at the slip-up, but knew her words rang true regardless of her examples.

"Well, still, it's not realistic for there to only be one good guy, or girl, that saves the day."

"Well, what do you think your role is?" Allie questioned curiously, cocking her head to the side.

"Oh god, I don't know," June thought, trying to think what she would do when the world turned to shit. "Definitely the first to die, like not even from drowning in the boat, but just from something stupid."

Allie laughed at her words and shook her head, disagreeing with every bit of them. Even if they hadn't really known each other long, she knew June wasn't the dumb one in the story, just like June knew she could be the heroine.

"Well, that better not be you," Allie pressed on, grabbing a few more items.

"And why not? Would you be sad without me?" June teased.

"Yeah, I'm gonna need you to help keep me the good guy here." Her words had turned more serious, and June realized they were no longer referencing some movie about a boat, but rather real life. It was no longer a joke, but instead their reality.

Their world had turned to shit. And June Thompson had no clue what she was going to do about it.
