You can do this!

You can do this!

I kept chanting in my head countlessly as the coaster bus stopped at Bluestone College.

A school that gave me nightmares and slowly led me into depression.

I can't believe that we're here.

Well I have to face reality sooner or later. I can't keep hiding.

I just can't believe everything happened yesterday.

Yesterday

It was a Wednesday morning and those that where a part of the competition were told not to come to school.

I packed some clothes since we are only going to be there for two days I didn't pack much. The people part of the competition were told to be at the airport at 11am on the dot.

My mum assured me everything was going to be alright, but even though I tried to believe that I just couldn't.

After mum asked if I had everything I needed she dropped me off at the airport by 10:40am. I met some of the people part of the competition either on their phones or reading.

And I also forgot to mention that some of our classmates who weren't part where also there like Derrick, Dexter and Desmond and the rest were prefects who came to support us.

Immediately Derrick sighted me he engulfed me in a bear hug. I smiled as I sniffed his manly scent.

"I hope my champion is ready?" He chuckled as he ended the hug.

"I was born ready." I said reassuringly.

That moment Mrs Chinaza clad in a black dress shirt and white palazzo trousers with pencil heels and our coaches for each subject appeared. And that scary counsellor came with the same out of date make up and worn out wig.

Kelechi, the girl who has a personal beef with the counsellor hissed and rolled her eyes.

"I'm so glad all of you could make it, I just want to let you know that I'm proud of you guys. My beautiful children. Give me a hug." She said to all of us, I think at that moment everyone voluntary took a step back as she inched closer.

I was actually terrified, she looked like a masquerade and I believe everyone else will agree with me considering the fact passerby's have been looking at her strangely. A child even started crying looking at her but stopped when his mom covered his eyes.

She stopped in her tracks, noticing nobody was willing to reciprocate her hug. "So nobody here wants a hug."

She asked and nobody answered her, Kelechi muttered something under her breath which was a little bit too loud. I guess the counselor must have heard it too because she called her name.

"Kelechi I guess you would need this hug more than anyone else." I swear the melanin on Kelechi's skin faded away as soon as she heard that sentence.

"I'm sorry but I can't hug you I think I'll fall sick." Kelechi composed herself before answering her.

Everyone was stifling their laughter as soon as she said that. Well this girl has guts.

"And what does that mean?!" It was clear the counsellor was annoyed at the statement.

"Well, I don't mean it a bad way it's just that..." She trailed off, probably looking for a way to construct her sentence.

"... I'm highly allergic to silk and you're wearing a cardigan made of silk so if I hug you I might have constant vomiting, swelling of the cheeks, dizziness might-"

"Okay that's enough! Our flight is ready." Mrs Chinaza cut in, obviously tired of the drama.

We followed her lead and we reached the plane. People were gathered around with their luggage's in hands probably doing one thing or the other.

After much moving around we settled thing. I sat on the sixth row close to Derrick, I took the chair that was close to the window. It was like three years since I last entered a plane and that was when I was leaving Lagos and now on a flight back to that place.

As the plane started moving, I felt a little anxious and worried. Then a familiar hand was placed on top mine.

"Stop doing like someone that wants to die na." He said jokingly giving my hand a little squeeze.

"I'm just nervous that's all." I looked away from him and shifted my gaze to the window. We were now fully high up in the air and the only thing o could see were clouds.

"I think I have a solution to that." He brought out his phone from his pocket and went to Spotify, he clicked on the app and was tapping and scrolling for a while till he brought the phone to my face.

He showed my varieties of different playlists.

Gym Workout

Heartbreak songs

Study Time

Taking a stroll

With the guys

Eating

Drinking

Sleeping

Plane anxiousness

Bro literally has a playlist of everything.

He tapped on the one that said plane anxiousness. He brought out his oraimo airpods and handed them over to me.

"Thank me later." He said bringing out another phone and focusing his attention on it.

I tapped on the first song, Open Arms by SZA.

โ™ฌโ™ฌI gotta let you go, I gotta let you go I must cause you're the only one that's holding me down...โ™ซโ™ซ

Something about SZA's music just hits differently. It's like she's the music herself.

I allowed the music take over me and then didn't know when my vision clouded in darkness.

โ€ขPresent Dayโ€ข

I was woken up by a gentle pat on my back. My eyelids fluttered opened only to see the most gorgeous pair of brown eyes staring gently at me.

"You've been sleeping since you this girl, are you a fish?" He asked with a smile plastered on his face.

I was about to stand up when a sharp pain shot through my waist line. I yelped in pain then sat back down.

Derrick noticing this quickly rushed to my side. "Hey, are you okay?"

"Yeah I am, I think it's just cramps for sitting to long or something." I replied.

He held me by my waist and started rubbing small circles on them. I lost all my thoughts when his hands came in contact with my waist.

I looked at him in the eyes and saw him intensely staring at me. I stared at him back, his piercing eyes lurking into my orbs.

His eyes suddenly went down, I followed their movements and saw it landed on my lips making me unconsciously licking my lips.

"Are those all the students of KIHS?" Mrs Chinaza's loud booming voice disrupted us from our heated moment. The pain was no longer on my waist and I stood up.

Derrick also composed himself and offered to carry my luggage's. We stepped out of the plane accompanied my little flight of stairs placed at the entrance.

We got out of the airport to the busy roads where vendors were busy advertising their products to people who seem less interested, people walking around and cars honking loudly.

"Okay kids, the bus that'll take us the hotel we're gonna lodge will be here in 20 minutes, so you guys can move around and stroll for a while and can also get yourselves something to eat. And make sure you all go in groups do that no one gets lost."

Everyone immediately dispersed to one place or the other. I was still busy admiring the streets the Lagos, even after three years this place hasn't changed a bit. Seeing everything here just brings back nostalgia.

"Buy your special rat poison o. It kills all of ya rodents sharpaly."

"Used pant and boxers for sale."

The voices of hawkers trying to sell their products made my realize that this is Lagos where you must do the unthinkable to survive. Just imagine someone selling used underwear. I cringed inwardly.

A tap on my back brought me out my thoughts, I looked up only to see Derrick staring at me. โ€œI got you some snacks.โ€™โ€™

He handed me a white polythene bag that was filled with chocolates, biscuits and two caprisun's.

โ€œAnd I also have something else for you,โ€ he paused and brought out something at his back slowly. โ€œThis is the part where you close your eyes now.โ€ He said.

I closed my eyes and then I found his hands on my neck. He told me to open my eyes and I did.

A necklace laid before me, but not just any necklace it's the Ying Yang necklace. The one where it joins with the yang to complete it.

Derrick had the Ying to complete it. He brought it close to mine and it joined together magnetically.

โ€œI was just walking around and then saw this, and then your face just came into my mind. The Ying Yang represents our closeness as..." He took a pause, collecting his words.

"... friends." He finally completed, and I must say that word made my heart front heavy for some resson but I paid little attention to it but just thanked him for the gift.

"Okay kids, the bus is here come let's go." Mrs Chinaza's voice boomed causing everyone to look at the direction where a blue bus was parked with the initials BSC (Bluestone College).

We all hopped into the coaster bus after putting our belongings in the boot of the car.

The information reaching us that we'll be lodging in the hostels of BSC. I was actually surprised because when I was still schooling there, boarding school wasn't present.

Oh how times changed.

And the competition starts at approximately 12:30am to 3pm in the afternoon and the time was just 10:15am.

After some turns, horning and a little bit of traffic we were finally here. I couldn't recognize the place at first but then the aura given off just by the golden gates opening remotely just proved it.

The place had surely changed a lot, the buildings were now painted blue and white with a tiny pinch of gold. And then there was now a statue of the founder of BSC painted in bronze at the middle of the parking lot.

I thought the bus was finally going to stop and park somewhere convenient but then it continued moving until it went straight ahead, passing all the buildings and took a left turn only to find another gate that read 'BSC Boarding'.

Well that's new. I thought to myself as a gateman opened this gate instead of it to open automatically like the other one.

My mouth dropped to the floor as I took in the architectural beautify upon me. It was built like the white House, big and humongous.

"You may all come down now." The bus drivers words brought me out of my reverie, as I saw that we've already parked.

I got down and met Derrick holding my suitcase. He gave me a smile which I returned back.

"You know you actually look amazed at the beauty of the school as if you've never been here before." He said.

"A lot of things have changed since I left you can't possibly blame me." I chuckled.

"And to think that this is a hostel, omo KIHS is still learning work o." Derrick said jokingly making me to laugh too.

Sure KIHS was the best school in Abuja and won awards for the most renowned educational facility for the past 30 years. But standing here made KIHS look inferior at some point.

"KIHS students welcome to our school." A voice which sounded familiar spoke up.

We all turned around to the voice only to see a chubby woman with black square glasses at the bridge of her nose. And that woman was no other than 'Mrs Abiola' the principal of BSC.

She and Mrs Chinaza exchanged pleasantries before turning their attention to us.

"Me and you're Principal have some catching up to do, so some prefects are going to come and escort you to the hostels you'll be staying in."

Mrs Abiola came closer to us and scanned all of our faces one by one until it landed on mine. She held eye contact for a little while before breaking it and walking off with Mrs Chinaza.

I involuntary breathed out.

"SOOOOOOONIA!!!"

Uh oh.

Before I had a chance to react the body running towards me engulfed me in a big tight hug that made my lungs restrict air flow.

"Amaka it's okay." I said in a rasp voice tapping her hand to she can let me go.

She reluctantly released me after some pleadings and this time she hugged me a much delicate hug which I reciprocated.

Murmurings from the others were heard probably wondering what the hell just happened. Then it occurred to me that none of them actually know I attended this school.

"Amaka stop mingling with those idiots and start showing them their hostels." I rolled my eyes at that voice, a voice that I will even detest when I'm dead.

Beauty with no brains.

Getting what she wants with the help of her parents.

Someone who doesn't care about others.

Self-centered two Faced bitch.

No other person than Jessica Ikechukwu.

"I hope it's not us she was calling idiots o." Kelechi said loudly, shifting Jessica's attention towards her.

"Yes I called you guys idiots cause you all are. So you think that because you've won all the academic competitions in Abuja you can just come here and challenge us in our territory! You must be joking."

"Who the hell do you think you are?" Kelechi was clearly angry as she started walking towards her but her friends we're holding her bag.

"I'm glad you asked that question, because I'll tell you who I am."

"I am Kelechi Ikechukwu, the first daughter of Stanley Ikechukwu the third a first class business tycoon in the whole of Lagos State and I'm also the daughter of Francesca Ikechukwu a first class fashion designer who designs and styles some clothes for Prada, Hermes, Gucci and Versace and etcetera."

"And I'm also the head girl of thisย  school, a school much better than that your dustbin were they breed things like you. And lastly I'm not your mate, if you try any nonsense with me I'll tell my dad and he can only be lenient enough to sue your school and-"

"Can you please shut the fuck up! Nobody cares about you and what your corrupt parents do. That's why they can't even train you right. Opening your mouth to brag about nonsense, yarning dust. Please just show us our rooms and stop talking about things irrelevant!!!"

Silence

More silence

The voice who said those things sounded much like mine. I looked around and saw everyone looking up at me like they've seen a ghost. I turned to my right and Derrick shared the same shocked expression.

I was the one.

I said that.

"Sonia is that you?"

At that moment another familiar face walked up to us at that moment. She stopped dead on her tracks when she saw me.

"Sonia?"
