"You may all have your seats." Yemisi, the chapel perfect said through the microphone.

I sat down with a nervous feeling. Today is the day they call out the people who are going to represent KIHS in the competition at Bluestone College.

I prayed to God that my name shouldn't be part of the people who had to represent KIHS.

"Let's welcome our principal, Mrs Chinaza for further announcement." Everyone present in the hall clapped as she appeared on stage.

"Good morning students of Kenward International High School, so today we are gonna pick the students who are going to represent us at Bluestone College one of the most prestigious high schools in Lagos State."

Just then the vice principal came in with a paper in his hand and handed it over to Mrs Chinaza. She nodded her head in response to whatever the man whispered into her ear.

"So for SS3 science class we have..."

She took a pause as she opened the white paper.

"Florence Williams, Victor Abraham, Chioma Chibuzor, Michelle Ikechukwu, Pelumi Francis and Sarah Chidinma."

"Please a round of applause for them as they come on stage." The five of stem walked up to the stage and everyone clapped ─ well except for me, I'm still trying hard not to faint.

"Now for SS3 art class we have..."

My heart started beating faster and faster and my whole sight became blurry.

"...Zainab Michael, Flora Williams, Kelechi Winner, John Obi, Empress Devin and Sonia Ubong."

My village people have done it.

I sank deep into the plastic chair as eyes from different corners started boring holes at me. I guess they might be thinking why are they picking a new student? I also don't know about this.

My surroundings suddenly started getting blurry. I looked up the stage and saw Mrs Chinaza saying something else but I couldn't get anything she said. She suddenly had two heads and three more bodies.

She was looking at me saying something to me but I couldn't quite make it out. I could only focus on how she grew two heads and how she developed other bodies.

"SONIA!" A loud voice brought me out of my trance. I looked around only to see students have their eyes on me like I was a mad woman. I looked at Mrs Chinaza and her multiple heads and body parts were gone. She now looked normal.

I them turned to my right to see Flora's left hand adorned with charm bracelets on my shoulder.

"Sonia are you okay? You zoned out." Concern was laced in her tone and I just nodded indicating yes.

"Now to all of those that I called out. You're going to be having lessons with the special tutors we've hired to teach you. Immediately after school closes y'all are to meet at the library. Thank you."

Everyone applauded as the principal got of stage.

I watched as everyone got up from their seats and exited the hall. I was frozen for a few seconds before a voice called my name.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Now Derrick was beside Flora asking me the question she asked earlier.

"Yeah I'm good.'' I gave a tight lipped smile and stood up from my chair.

Derrick who didn't look convinced by answer just nodded.

Everyone stopped whispering and talking as soon as I stepped into class. Their eyes we're like the sun boring holes into my skin. I gulped silently and walked to my seat.

Then I heard it.

What they were talking about.

They were talking about me.

"I don't understand KIHS again o, how can they pick a student to represent us that just came here four weeks ago?"

"Maybe she has a potential."

"No be only potential mtchewww.'"

"Is like she even slept with all the male teachers so they can pick her."

"Asin ehn! Nothing that girl does will ever surprise me."

"She should just make us lose first. We'll show her pepper."

"Slut like her."

I didn't know how but tears started flowing freely from my eyes and I didn't just stop it.

Gbam

A sound suddenly caused everyone to keep quiet. A slowly looked up and saw Flora in front of Sarah and her clique.

Sarah had her hand on her left cheek with her mouth wide open. After she recovered from the shock she stood up from the table she was seated and stood in front of Flora with the deadly glare attached on her face.

"Shey you don dey mad? Why did you raise your filthy hands on me?" Flora just hissed at her and walked over to my table. She gave me a smile before facing Sarah again.

"As you guys might not know, this is the Sonia that has been trending eversince she stepped foot inside Kenward International High School. The girl whose name can't ever leave your lips. The girl whose a classy and smart bitch. The girl who is envied by other girls because she got a man who some of you have been trying to get the attention of for more than six years."

"She is the girl all of you are dying to be like, that's why her name is always rolling off you guys tongue because you all just feel inferior. No matter what you do and say nothing will bring her down. So you guys should just capital letter REST!"

I quickly got of from my chair and engulfed her in a bone-crushing hug. Friends like these are so hard to find. Flora has been the only one looking out for me eversince I came to this forsaken school."

"So is that why you slapped her?" Sandra one of Sarah's minions asked.

"See ehn, you better shift from here you know there's no difference between you and toothpick, I'll just break you."

Flora grabbed my hand and led me out of that toxic class. I'm so grateful to her for that.

"My Sonia boo, don't allow all those words get to you, you're stronger than you think. If anyone and I repeat... If anyone wants to try nonsense with you just call me let me give them slap that will make them see their grandmother in the grave." Flora said and I couldn't help but laugh at what she just said. The laughter made me forget all my troubles.

"See how fine you are when you smile. Don't be frowning your face like one ape iyeh."

"I would love to stay and chit chat but one werey will not allow me because he desperately wants to talk to you."

With that she scurried off and left me alone. Who is the person that wants to talk to me again?

I sighted Derrick and I stood frozen at a spot. The memories of what I did the last time we met came flooding in and I cussed. Fuck!

I pecked him!

He started walking towards me and I almost forgot how to breath. Why must somebody's nine months be fine like this na.

As he started getting closer I composed myself.

"Hi Sonia." His voice was so deep and smooth that my ovaries were on fire.

"H-i D-errick." I stuttered and I almost fainted cause of embarrassment.

He just laughed, and omo that laugh was doing things to me.

"I saw what happened in my classroom and I came to check up on you."

"Oh yeah I'm totally fine."

"So... I wanted to ask if you would like to hang out some time?"

Did he just ask me out.

No oh it was your shadow he was asking.

"YES!" I squealed like a child. When I saw he was looking at me amused I quickly answered in a more collective tone.

"Yeah sure I would like to hang out sometime."

"Okay cool, so I will chat you up for the details."

"Yeah sure."

When he left I did an imaginary victory dance and skipped through the hallways in joy.

Kai, see wetin man don cause.

I just finished the lesson the school organized for the competition and surprisingly it wasn't that bad.

I just got back from school and I'm now in my bed face timing Amaka who is excited about the whole competition thing.

"I can't wait to see you!" She squealed for the umpteenth time eversince I started this call.

"I'm still anxious about going to Bluestone you know."

"Anxious of wetin, abeg if it's because of the people just remove your mind from there, everything will be just fine." She gave me a smile that I gladly returned back.

"Sonia someone is here to see you." My mum said from downstairs. I groaned as I lazily stood up from bed.

"Why does this woman like disturbing us anytime we are talking." Amaka had a frown on her face. I ensured her that I'll be back and cut the call.

As I got to the living room a face that I didn't believe I'll see for sometime now was sitting in the living room.

My legs felt wobbly as I stared at him.

Tears were already threatening to spill from my eyes.

I held the railings of the staircase tighter as my leg were about to give up on me.

After 3 good years.

"Dad?"
