Chapter Seven

~

It didn't take me long to catch up with Edmund, after all he seemed to be moving at the pace of a turtle.

"Edmund, what are you doing?" I called running to fall into line with the dark haired boy.

He turned to me in annoyance, "Ugh its you, why are you everywhere?"

I threw his fluffy grey coat at him extra hard for that comment. "Are you exploring?" I questioned wrapping my own coat around my shoulders with a shiver.

"Its none of your business, just go back to the dam." He ordered, reluctantly putting the coat on.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because I want to be alone!" Edmund exclaimed.

Sensing I was making him frustrated I just grinned, "Well you can't go off alone, you heard what the beaver said, the trees might try and axe murder you."

"Very funny," Edmund rolled his eyes, but he grew slightly stiff as we continued the walk through the snow.

"You've been here, to Narnia, before haven't you?" I started.

The boy gave a half shrug as his answer, sensing that I wouldn't be leaving anytime soon.

"What happened?"

"Nothing," He scowled coldly. I didn't believe him.

I had opened my mouth to press for an answer, but instead I caught sight of something magnificent. "Woah,"

It was a giant ice castle. Literally an entire fortress made of ice. It had towers and a draw bridge, with balcony's and shiny windows. The glow from the ice and snow casted a blue hue into the sky. It was beautiful.

And yet at the same time it casted a chill over me, and not the good kind.

"Thats the white witches castle. She's the real queen of Narnia," Edmund stated, hungrily gazing over the palace.

"The white witch? You mean the one who took the faun?" I asked growing nervous.

"She only took him cause he broke the law," Edmund defended.

"Oh you mean having a cup of tea with your younger sister? Well shame on him," I said sarcastically. Edmund simply rolled his eyes and started off towards the castle.

I groaned and followed after him, "Hold on, lets just go back!"

"No way, those beavers have no idea what they're talking about." Edmund scowled, clearly fed up with my presence.

"Oh and you do?" I shot.

"Yes actually." Edmund sniffed. "If you must know when I first came here the queen found me and said that I could be prince, maybe even king if I brought my siblings to her,"

I paused in shock, taking the boys words in slowly. He had totally lost it.

"Are you crazy? That is an obvious lie if I've ever seen one. And besides, how horrible of you to manipulate your siblings into coming just so you can betray them and hand them over to the enemy," I looked at the boy in disgust.

"Shut up, she isn't the enemy! And its not like she'll hurt them or anything," Edmund defended.

"Oh yeah? Says who?" I questioned, not noticing that we were right before the giant castles gates now.

Edmund scowled at me, "It doesn't concern you. Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go greet the queen, have fun with the beavers,"

He pushed past me, bumping into my shoulder rather aggressively.

For a moment I was tempted to just let him go. Edmund was a jerk, and he clearly had no intentions of wanting to be friends, so why should I care about him?

But though my grandmother hadn't mentioned the white witch in her stories all that often, I knew she was a liar and a manipulator. She obviously would never give her throne to Edmund, he was just to stupid to see it.

No, she was using him to get to the others. But why?

When two Sons of Adam and three Daughters of Eve take their rightful seat on the five thrones, the land shall once again prosper in peace.

It had been ages since I had thought of the prophecy from the story. But if my grandmother and this world were truly connected, then that had to mean something.

Peter and Edmund and the sons of Adam, Susan, Lucy, and I are the daughters of Eve.

If we took over the thrones the white witch would no longer hold the power. She would be overthrown. That was why she wanted us.

"Edmund wait!" I yelled to the boy, mind spinning from the revelations. But it was too late, Edmund was already far inside the courtyard, staring at a stone statue.

I let out a breath of fear, turning to look behind me for any help, but I couldn't see far through the snow.

It was clear that the white witch had intended to get us all in her grasp so that we wouldn't threaten her rule. And Edmund was currently about to make a grave mistake.

I had a split second to choose whether I wanted to turn back for help or chase after the boy.

For the second time that night I was dashing after Edmund Pevensie.

"You aren't going in alone," I panted ducking under a strange looking statue of a bird.

"I don't need your protection!" Edmund called out, offended.

"Good, because you won't be getting it." I crossed my arms and followed the boy. While I was partially following because of him, I was mainly curious to see if I had been correct. And if I had been, then Edmund would be very lucky to have me.

Before either of us had time to react a flash of grey jumped at us, pining us both to the ground.

"Be still stranger, or you'll never move again." As I regained my senses I realized it had been a wolf that had attacked us.

"Who are you?" The wolf questioned, its sharp teeth baring down at us.

"I'm Edmund, I met the queen in the woods! She told me to come here, I'm a son of Adam!" Edmund blurted fearfully. I stifled the urge to groan, any advantage we had previously had was now thrown to the wolves. Literally.

"And you?" The wolf turned its attention to me, a shiver ran down my spine, both from the cold and the beasts dark eyes glaring down at me.

"I'm Charlotte, I'm his friend," I stated trying to be calm, but there was no mistaking the quiver in my voice.

"We are not friends-" I shifted under the weight of the wolf and elbowed the boy. Now was really not the time.

The wolf hummed and released us from his hold, allowing us to stand back up. "My apologies, fortunate favorites of the queen. Or else not so fortunate. Right this way," The wolf turned its back and began walking the way it had come.

I dusted the snow off me and looked back only to see the gates shut. There was no running away now.

Mentally cursing Edmund I followed after the wolf. We walked along in silence, though my blaring thoughts were more than enough to fill it. I kept wondering how I could undo Edmunds mess and keep us alive.

I had been so caught up in thinking that I hadn't even noticed we had stopped in front of a massive ice thrown covered in furs.

The wolf stopped, "Wait here," Then he jumped off to a new corridor, most likely to get his leader.

Once he was gone I sat myself on one of the icy steps by the throne. "If we're gonna escape we need to go now," I said to Edmund who had been eyeing the throne hungrily.

"Why would I want to escape? This is paradise." The boy sighed, slumping down on the throne and gazing around the room like he owned it.

I stood in annoyance, but before I could get a word out a new voice said, "Like it?" It was chilling, but that was nothing compared to her appearance. She wore a long white gown, with snowflakes decorating it, her skin was pale, and her eyes were a sharp blue. Her features were fair, but her gaze held such cruelty and cunningness that it instantly dulled her look. Her hair was a whitish blonde, with an icicle crown piled on top of it.

The White Witch.

Edmund jumped up from the seat imminently. "Oh uh- yes your majesty,"

The witch nodded, "I thought you might." She eyed me, "And who might you be?"

I swallowed nervously, but refused to let it show on my face. Instead I pulled my shoulders back and raised my chin high, "I'm Charlotte,"

The woman stepped closer, taking in my appearance quite obviously, "You- you look exactly like someone I used to know."

If I had doubted the connection before, now I was certain. My grandmother had been to Narnia.

The witch stopped away and turned back to Edmund, "Tell me Edmund, are your sisters deaf?"

"No," The boy shook his head.

"And your brother, is he... unintelligent?" The cold woman drawled.

"Well I think so, but mum says-"

The witch faced him with a startling anger in her eyes. Her once kind demeanor was gone in the blink of an eye, replaced by a stiff figure. "Then how dare you come alone!"

We both jumped back, fear and surprise written on our faces.

"I- I brought her!" Edmund pointed at me accusingly. I fought very hard to keep from kicking him in the shins.

"And yet I asked you to bring everyone! I asked so little," The witch seethed.

"They just don't listen to me! Charlotte knows, tell her!" He turned to me hopefully.

"Well in their defense you are quite annoying. I wouldn't want to listen to you either," I scowled, fed up with the boy.

"Enough!" The witch cried before Edmund could get another word out. "You have failed me."

"Well I did bring them half way. They're at the little dam, with the beavers." Edmund stated to my bewilderment. He had just knowingly sold out his siblings.

The witch faced him, "Well, I suppose you aren't a total loss then," I could only stare at Edmund in horror.

After a moment of silence Edmund approached the white witch. "Well I was wondering, could I maybe have some more Turkish Delight now?"

"You betrayed your family for sweets!?" I cried out.

I was ignored. "Our guest is hungry!" The witch called to a short looking man with long dark hair and a matching beard.

The man approached Edmund and I, taking two long knifes out of his belt and holding them against our backs. "Right this way,"

Knowing I didn't have a choice I walked along with Edmund and the dwarf. As we moved further from the horrible woman I could just barely hear her say, "Maugrim, you know what to do."

Then there was a sickening howl. One by one more wolves joined in, until it was a full fledged battle cry.

They were being sent off to find the others, I realized. And they would most likely be successful, all thanks to me and Edmund.
