"I still can't believe it. All of this seems like a dream. Don't try to disappear,"

- Butterfly (BTS)

Ki-joo smiled widely when he saw Hye-na and Yuna coming up the stairs, both of them absorbed in their conversation, the former moving her hands expressively. It was most likely about Hye-na becoming Ye-bin's home-in tutor, something that had made Yuna burst out into laughter when she has first heard it. He sped up his pace to reach them faster, a gasp cutting through the air and making him stiffen, his eyes widening as Yuna stumbled, her body thudding against the staircase. Hye-na reached for her friend, panic present in her eyes as she desperately tried to grip onto Yuna's blazer, pulling her up with difficulty. Woo-joo raced over, helping the girl make Yuna sit up, and chatter broke out as the rest of the students took in Yuna's state.

"Someone get Ki-joon!" he can hear someone yell, but is more focused on Yuna. The girl's eyes are closed, newly forming bruises lining her arms from when they collided with the banister, a few cuts bleeding, and he took in the scar that ran up the side of her left leg, the jagged mark of it seeming painful and making him swallow. Her eyes are closed shut, and her breathing is shallow, dark hair fanning around her paler than usual face.

Footsteps thud against the floor, and he raised his head to find Ki-joon running towards them, face growing white as the sight of Yuna lying crumpled against the floor. He lifted her up bridal style, sprinting towards the infirmary, students watching them go by with concerned looks. He turned around to face Hye-na, the girl biting down on her bottom lip worriedly.

"What was that?" her eyes focused on him, still looking far away.

"Ah. I forgot you weren't here when it happened,"

"When what happened?" she sighed, standing up and brushing the dust off her skirt, leading him towards the empty soccer field.

"About five months ago, Yuna got into an accident. It changed everything. From the Sky Castle kids' friendship, to the atmosphere at school," she started off. "It was a pretty good day actually-"

The bell signaling that it was home time rang shrilly, students whooping as they ran out of the gates. Hye-na gripped onto the straps of her bag, looking around for a familiar face and smiling when she found it. Yuna was busy chatting to Ye-seo, Ki-joon trying to get her attention by poking her back repeatedly. Seo-joon was laughing at something Ye-bin had said, the girl smiling mischievously as she elbowed Soo-han, obviously teasing the boy. The Sky Castle kids finally gathered up, starting to make their way home, walking like they did almost every other day.

Yuna spun around to yell something mockingly at Ki-joon, the boy looking offended as he chased her, stopping at the cross road. They started walking when the traffic light turned red, still conversing about something. Yuna was the first to notice that something was amiss, the smile on her lips fading away when she noticed a car coming towards them. Her eyes had widened, and she had looked around, taking in her happy friends, oblivious to the car speeding in their direction, and made a decision.

"She pushed Ki-joon out of the way?" Woo-joo questioned. Hye-na nodded, shuddering as she remembered hearing the thud of Yuna's body against the front of the car, how Ki-joon had rolled up to look at her, knees bleeding and palms scratched. Someone had screamed. Now that she thought about it, it was most likely her who had let out that horrible sound. Yuna's leg was twisted in the wrong direction, and blood poured down from the left side of her head, her eyes fluttering weakly as she reached for her friends.

"They looked so happy that day," Hye-na said softly. "And then when Yuna got hit-" she inhaled shakily, and Woo-joo put an arm on her shoulder to steady her. "We all rushed to the hospital as soon as we could. Ki-joon was the one to go with her in the ambulance, and when we arrived, he was just staring at his hands. They were covered with her blood, and he couldn't stop shaking. Everyone was so shaken up, especially when the doctor said she wasn't waking up," the horrified expressions around her were memorized in her head.

She could still remember the sharp gasp Ye-bin let out, how Ye-seo had dissolved into tears, and how Seo-joon had started frantically questioning the doctor for more details. Most of all, she could never forget the way Ki-joon's face had crumbled, how his fingers left indents on his palms at how tight his fists had been clenched. All the Sky Castle kids had consoled one another, and Hye-na would've left, feeling like she didn't belong, if it hadn't been Kang Ye-seo herself offering her a cup of coffee to keep her going.

"She would've wanted you here," was all her rival had said, eyes swollen and puffy as she sat back down next to Ye-bin. So Hye-na has stayed. They'd all been sent home, forced to attend school every day and watch as the amount of flowers and 'get well soon' cards had grown to cover the expanse of her desk. Then, after day ten, Hye-na had been dragged to the hospital, to see Yuna wide awake. They'd stilled at the door, taking in the sight of the girl laying against the pillow, talking quietly to Ki-joon, exhausted yet serene.

"Yuna never told us the exact details of the diagnosis. All she told us that her left leg was slightly weaker, and that she might collapse here and then. This is the second time we're seeing it up close and personal,"

"What about her parents? Were you the only ones there that day?"

"No. Her entire family came, but her dad didn't. Of course, that was to be expected. I thought Seo-joon was going to go and hunt down the asshole when he heard that Yuna's father refused to come see her. Her mother was crying all the time, and Hana wouldn't say anything, just held onto her brother and looked around with puffy eyes,"

"And her brother?"

"He was absolutely broken. Sang-jun, he's been the only person in that entire family to never take Yuna for granted, the only one to support her no matter what. They've always been protective over each other, and have been mistaken for twins because of how they have a deeper bond than you'd expect from usual siblings. He used to attend Shin A too, and was popular for being quiet but intelligent, always hanging out with Yuna and making her laugh. That day, he was so sullen and withdrawn, and snapped at anyone who had tried to talk to him," she remembered how Sang-jun kept on walking around, shrugging off his mother's arm with a glare and hissed words that made her shrink back. "He was so pale, and kept on muttering under his breath. It sounded like," she hesitated. "It sounded like he thought she'd tried to commit suicide," Woo-joo's blood froze.

"Yuna?"

"You'd never see from her cheerful attitude that she goes through so much, but he's her brother, and he knew everything. The overbearing stress his parents placed on him was already a lot, but I think seeing Yuna unconscious and not waking up for weeks might've pushed him even more,"

"You said everything had changed. What did you mean by that?" she pursed her lips..

"The Sky Castle kids... they're messed up. Yes. Most definitely. And Yuna knows that. She has the worst out of all of them, with her douchebag of a father," she sounded bitter. "But she always tried to make everyone see the best in life. Always made them hang out and bond and just develop a good friendship. For a time, they were. Everyone got along so well, had an amazing time whenever they were together, just being regular kids. But after Yuna's accident, they all withdrew into themselves. Maybe they were all blaming each other for not noticing the car in time. Who knows. When Yuna came back, things did improve, but you can see how distant they are to each other now," Woo-joo ran a hand through his hair.

"Jesus Christ," Hye-na laughed.

"Jesus Christ indeed,"

'~'

Yuna groaned, sitting up carefully, trying to stretch her arms and blinking when she felt something stopping her from doing so. She looked down, a gentle smile gracing her face as she saw Ki-joon lying down on her lap, fingers firmly tangled with her own. Despite her trying her best not to disturb him, the boy stirred, waking up slowly. His eyes widen when he noticed that she was awake, scanning over her.

"Thank god you're awake. Are you okay?"

"Well, my arms hurt from when they hit the rails, but I'll be fine after a while. You didn't have to sleep here you know. Your dad's going to be pissed,"

"Let him," Ki-joon said dismissively. "I'm more worried about you,"

"Me being hurt isn't a reason for you getting in trouble Ki-joonie," her voice was gentle. "I always trouble you," his eyes flashed, a frown appearing on his face.

"Is someone saying shit to you?"

"It's the truth, isn't it? You always help me out when I get hurt, and end up missing lessons or getting scolded," she blinked when she felt his grip on her hand tighten, looking up to find him only inches away from her.

"Listen here Song Yuna," he mumbled lowly. "When it comes to you, I'd do anything. I don't care about how much trouble I'd get in, or what others would think of me. Because being here, being with you, it's what makes me the happiest,"

"You can't be happy with me all the time," she tried to say weakly. "I mean, it's exhausting to be with someone like me. I could faint on you any second,"

"If you ever do, I'll carry you in my arms and stay with you until you wake up," his left hand came to cup her face tenderly, eyes soft as they scanned over her features, finding comfort in how familiar they were. "Because I love you," her gaze shifted to look at him, eyes widening in surprise at the vulnerability in his voice. "Ever since we were kids, I've always wanted to make sure that the happiness you spread is returned back to you, because you're so selfless and kind. You always made sure to take care of me, carrying bandages for all the times I tripped and not complaining even though I know you hate the sight of blood. Song Yuna, you're everything to me. You're the reason I wake up and come to school, because I know I'll see you sitting at your desk. All of my happy memories, they all have you in them. I love you Yuna. I have since we were little kids, and that feeling has just grown and grown like we have," she smiled, tears filling her eyes up, and threw her arms around him in a tight hug.

"Glad you finally confessed. You'll finally know how much of a catch I am," she joked, voice trembling as she did so, and he could still hear the untold 'I love you'. But he didn't need a confirmation. It was in the way she had painstakingly done everything she could for him, the way she smiled at him, like she was doing right now. No words were exchanged, but he could feel her telling him everything in the way she tangled her fingers with his, and pressed a kiss against his lips, feather light yet sending his heart into overdrive. God he loved Song Yuna.
