Chapter 6
"What are you doing?" Jason questions as he finishes his coffee, watching as my fingers tap away on my phone.
"Sending a message to the school so they know I won't be coming in today," I answer, leaning back against the pillows on the bed. It's past ten in the morning, I slept in a couple of hours from the time I woke earlier in the morning. It's given Jason enough time to shower and cook breakfast for both of us, him bringing mine upstairs to eat.
"You think they'll be pissed you didn't call in sooner," he asks, placing his cup down and moving to sit beside me.
"When they see how I look tomorrow, they can't complain," I say, looking at my reflection on my phone. "So uncute," I mutter to myself. The swelling went down from yesterday but the discoloration is still there.
"I think you look sexy, battle scars," he says, placing his hand against my cheek. "Does your head hurt still?"
"Just a bit, the doctor did say that it would hurt for a while," I answer. "But I took a painkiller after I ate so it's just a matter of time before it kicks in." He stretches out on top of the covers and moves closer to me, his arm stretching out as he pulls me into his side, my head resting on his shoulder.
"Just rest today and by tomorrow you can go back to your normal routine," he says holding my head tenderly.
"I just hope that this goes down enough that the kids don't freak out when they see me," I tell him as I picture their frightened faces. "Not to mention the gossip it'd bring," I add, thinking back to that one teacher that loves to gossip.
"Tell them that it's none of their fucking business," he says rolling his eyes.
"Easier said than done. I'll have to give some type of story to the principal at least," I chuckle. "When are you leaving for work?"
"Later in the afternoon, I have another night shift, even though I'm the chief," he tells me.
"Chief of police?" I ask, my curiosity peeking out. "Impressive."
"I was promoted last year after what happened," he says to me. The questions I have on that particular topic is at the tip of my tongue but I can't bring myself to say anything considering what happened last time. "I can see that look on your face," he tells me.
"What look?" I ask indignantly, moving so I can face him properly.
"That look on your face where you want to ask me everything but your holding back," he says poking my forehead.
"You can't blame me. I'm curious after everything I saw when they were broadcasting it but I'm not going to push you. Whenever you're ready to tell me you can tell me," I say smiling at him. I can't describe the look on his face, a different mixture of emotions but I can see the desire clear as day on his face. He advances towards me, his lips millimetres away from mine, his hand on my cheek, cradling it in his palm.
"May I?" he asks, his voice sinful as he watches me. He's not going to do anything unless I agree to it and I want those lips against mine, to feel his heat against me. I surge up, my hand going on his thigh and I kiss him, my mouth moving against his languidly. He gives me control over the kisses for a couple of seconds before changing pace.
The kiss is harsh and deep, his tongue intertwining with mine, a moan coming from my lips. He pulls back and we're both breathing heavily and I feel my lips are slightly swollen. I can see the lust in his eyes and I'm sure mine look the same but now isn't the time to get hot and heavy. My head falls against his shoulder, my eyes staring at his tattooed neck.
"You're so fucking sexy Victoria," he growls out, his hands threading through my hair. I let out a soft chuckle as my heart slows down. "I'll tell you what happened. A part of it since there's more though I can't talk about that yet. But first, let's change things a bit." He maneuvers me so I'm sitting sideways between him, his leg propped and my head resting on his arm so I can still see him.
"Whatever you feel comfortable telling me I'll listen," I tell him. I lean back against him as his arm wraps around me.
"Everything you saw on the news was true. Charlotte was taken to Spain with Wren in a kidnapping because of her boyfriend's connections to the mafia, one that he couldn't get rid of. When we reunited, she asked me for help but what I found was the police were in cohorts with the mafia," he says to me.
"It fucking sucks that the people we look up to as protectors of the city were in league with them," I say shaking my head.
"When they found out I was friends with Charlotte, they wanted me to keep away but I wasn't going to do that, after all, she needed my help and I wasn't just going to leave her. After everything that happened, things changed and people were cut from my life and people were arrested. Since I took part in bringing them down and help with the rescue, they promoted me to be chief," he explains.
"I see, I think it's good and it's over for Charlotte and her family and you," I say to him as I lean further against him, the painkillers from earlier finally working it's magic and making me lethargic.
"It's fucking over and there are some people I hope rot in jail forever. There's one person I need to tell you about from that whole mess but Victoria I don't want to hide it from you but I can't talk to you about it either without making me feel like I have to punch the shit out of something," he growls out.
"If you can't talk about it now then keep it for later. Whatever it is, no matter how bad or shocking it is, I'll listen with a clear mind. You have my word on that," I say, pressing my hand against his chest. I can feel the bitterness coming from him and the anguish to, whatever it is or whoever it is left some damage in him.
"You're the first woman that hasn't pressured me to reveal anything. Any other person Charlotte set me up with unwillingly were bitches," he snaps.
"Then I'm glad I'm not a bitch, but Jason, no woman likes hearing about past women," I say with a smirk. I'm only teasing him, no real anger or jealousy in my voice but I guess he sees it otherwise. He leans down, kissing me deeply for a couple of seconds and then pulling back, his lips hovering over mine.
"The only person I see right now is you, sweetheart. I don't see anyone else," his voice rough as he looks deep into my eyes. I don't say anything as I work my thoughts.
"I wanted to ask, are you sure, with me?" I whisper, the uncertainty clear in my voice. "You don't feel we're going too fast?"
"There's nothing more that I've ever wanted. I want you and only you. Whatever pace you want to go at I'll follow it," he says, his lips brushing over mine. "And fuck, the first day I saw you in the hospital I almost got hard from how sexy you were. I want you because I see a sexy confident and witty woman." I feel myself flush over the thought of him getting hard over me at first sight.
"Okay," I tell him and he gives me another kiss, moving back after so I can rest against him again. I let out a yawn, my eyes not being able to stay awake anymore.
"Go back to sleep Victoria, I'll be here when you wake up," he says kissing my forehead and for the second time in less than twelve hours, I fall asleep against Jason.

It's after three and I'm downstairs now watching a movie as I wait for Oli and Jason to come home. When I woke up two hours ago to eat he asked if I wanted to stay the night again and I babysit Oli while he's working. I agreed considering there's more comfort here compared to my empty apartment.
I hear the front door being unlocked and Jason and Oli's voices fill the entryway. Jason is talking to Oli and I only hear one-word replies from him. They walk to where I am in the living room and when Oli sees me his face lights up.
"Tori!" he exclaims as he runs up to give me a hug. I put my arms around him giving him a squeeze back, his happiness flowing to me. He moves back and looks at me, and I can see he's upset with my appearance.
"I fell down and hurt myself, I'm so clumsy," I tell him, try to get that look off his face. He gives me another hug before running upstairs. I look to Jason in confusion and he sighs scratching the back of his head.
"I forgot that something like this might trigger his memories," he says sighing again.
"What are you talking about? What memories?" I ask confused. Jason opens his mouth to answer but his phone starts ringing interrupting him. He pulls it out looking at the number and then slipping it back into his pocket.
"I have to go but check on Oli for me, will you? I think there's a chance he might tell you," he tells me as he crosses over to give me kiss and promptly turns to leave. He locks the door behind him and I look at the door, no words coming to mind at how he just walked out leaving me to deal with this on my own. I move to stand and go upstairs when I hear footsteps coming back down. Oli looks at me and he walks up to me, sitting on the sofa beside me.
"Where's uncle Jason?" he questions.
"He went to work but I'm staying with you again," I tell him with a smile. "What's wrong Oli?" He looks unsure for a moment, twiddling his fingers for a bit but then the damn breaks.
"You looked like mom, but mom died," he cries out.
"Wait, your mom?" I ask shocked, holding my hand out to him.
"Mom died when the car hit us," he cries. Hold on a second, was he in a car crash, with his parents? And he remembers it? Most probably he must have seen the bruises on his mom and he's remembering it because of me. I move closer to him and pull him in a hug, holding him tight against me.
"Oli, you're safe now. Your mom might not be here but she's in your heart right?" I ask him and I feel him nod against me. "Then that's okay. Even though your mom isn't here she loves you very much, I know it, and you love her the same," I whisper against his head. He lets out heartbreaking cries and it hurts to hear. I don't know how long we sit with me holding him as his sobs subside.
"Are you feeling better?" I ask, my fingers wiping his cheeks.
"I'm okay. Are you going to die Tori?" he questions.
"No, I'm not. I'm here to stay," I say with a smile. He gives me another hug and moves closer to me. "Hey Oli, why do you like me so much?" It's been at the forefront of my mind, his immediate attachment to me.
"You're nice and you took care of me like mom did. You're even nicer than her," he tells me. "You're fun Tori," he says with a beaming grin.
"You too," I say with a grin of my own. In just a week he's become one of my favourite people. I hear his stomach growling and I figure I might as well whip up something for the two of us to eat.
"Oli, let's go make a snack for ourselves, you finish your homework and then we watch some television. How does that sound?" I ask him.
"Let's do it, I'm really hungry and I want to watch tv," he says jumping up and tugging on my hand.
"Don't forget you're homework," I say shaking my head as I let him pull me towards the kitchen, though one thing is on my mind, who is her? It can't be his mom so it must be someone else, most probably some Jason was involved with in the past. I don't have time to think about it with an energetic kid ready to eat but that doesn't mean I'll be forgetting it any time soon.
