Chapter 2
"Fire away officer, I'll just say that I have no idea who shot the owner officer Carter," I tell him crossing my arms. He takes a seat across from me and his lips pull up in a smirk.
"For someone that was just caught up in a shooting and saved someone from dying, you seem to be fairly calm," he observes.
"I'm a nurse, something like blood or seeing an injured person doesn't phase me," I say in a deadpan tone.
"And a bartender? How did you get caught in that?" he asks cooly, raising a brow in question.
"My best friend works at the bar, she's one of the managers. If it's going to be a busy night she'll call me in to help, just like today," I answer.
"Where were you when the shooting happened?" he questions, flipping a small notebook open, pen in hand.
"I was heading to the v.i.p lounge, I heard one shot behind me and everyone was panicking to run out from the bar. The only people who were left by the time EMS came were the employees and well the owner," I reply listing off the two.
"You didn't see anyone suspicious that was still lingering in the bar?" he asks jotting down my answers.
"Don't you think I would have told you if I saw someone?" I retort. He pauses writing, looks back up at me, eyes narrowing before letting out a low chuckle.
"You know most officers wouldn't be so kind like me in letting someone get away with lip during a formal investigation," he smirks.
"What can I say, officer? It's almost midnight, I'm tired, and I have another job to get to in the morning," I sigh.
"Another job? As what?" his curiosity peeking up.
"I don't think I need to tell you because that isn't related to what happened thirty minutes ago," I say, ignoring his question. "That sounds like more of a personal question and even if I don't answer, I'm pretty sure when you run a background check on me you'll get your answer."
"Well played Ms. Marshall, well played," he chuckles. "You've got an interesting air to you."
"So I've been told," I say rolling my eyes. "Is that all the questions you needed to ask?"
"For now yes but if there's anything in our investigation that comes up, we will most likely contact you," he replies standing up.
"Good to know. I'll be heading out now, have a goodnight Officer Carson," I tell him as I walk away. Holy shit Victoria, you fucking managed to not self-combust when talking to him. And did you see the way he smirked, and when he laughed; my god, a human being shouldn't be that sexy, does someone like that really exist?
"Ms. Marshall, hold on a second." I turn to see the officer walking up to me, stopping a couple of feet away.
"Let me drop you off to wherever you're heading. It's dark, and I'm pretty sure you didn't come with a winter jacket or car," he says pointedly looking at my scrubs. I purse my lips weighing my options. To call Cora and potentially wait here while she finishes up at the bar which could take hours or to take a ride with the sexy officer back to the bar, grab my jacket plus keys and walk home.
"I need to go back to the bar to get my things, my friend will probably drop me off," the lie slipping from my lips, no doubt I'll be walking. "And please call me Victoria, it's too formal with the Ms. Marshall thing."
"Alright Victoria but in return, you can call me Jason," he says, my name rolling off his tongue which gives me goosebumps. I guess he sees the reaction I have to him because he gives me a cocky smirk before gesturing to follow him. I walk behind him as we trek through the hospital to the main entrance. We're not at the doors yet and I can feel the cold night air, and I subconsciously rub my arms. "Here, you look like you need this." I see his outstretched hand holding out his coat for me to take to wear.
"Oh no, you don't have to worry about it," I say shaking my head. "It's your jacket and I'll be fine." He rolls his eyes before stepping close to me that I can smell the spicy cologne he's wearing. He drapes his coat over my shoulders, fixing it so it doesn't fall.
"I'm not that callous to let someone freeze," he murmurs before stepping back. "C'mon, my cruiser is parked out front." He walks out of the hospital and I quickly follow him, my heart thumping a bit from the close proximity. He unlocks his car and I get in as he starts it, turning on the heat.
It's strange being back inside a police car, brings back memories I'd rather forget. The drive back to the bar is silent, only the sound of the radio in the car masking the awkward tension between us. He drives for another ten minutes before pulling up outside the bar.
"Thank you for the drive back," I tell him as I unbuckle the seatbelt. "Saved me the time of having to wait for a ride."
"You're welcome," he replies. I take off his coat and leave it hanging on the back of the seat. Thank goodness I wore my sneakers to the bar because now I can make a quick run from the car to the door.
"Have a good night Jason," I tell him with a small smile as I exit the car. Just as I'm shutting the door he calls my name.
"Here, take this in case you remember anything from what happened tonight," he says holding out a card with his name and number.
"Thanks again," I tell him as I take the card and shut the door. I run through the night air as fast as I can inside, I doubt I'll see Jason again.
"Tori!" I hear a voice yell before a body slams into mine. "How's the owner doing?"
"I have no idea, Cora. I left while he was still in surgery," I reply hugging her back.
"Oh my gosh, I hope he's okay," Cora says, gnawing her lip from worry. "By the way, how did you come back here? You don't have your car keys since you left everything except your phone that I gave you."
"I got a ride back here," I say averting my eyes from her.
"Was it from that sexy cop?" her eyes brighten when she says that.
"Haruto already told you?" I ask rolling my eyes.
"Girl, that was the first thing he told me after checking to see I was okay," she chuckles.
"You both have nothing better to do," I say rolling my eyes again.
"Keep doing that and they'll get stuck in the back of your head," she points out.
"Yeah, whatever. I'm going to grab my jacket and then I'm out of here. A hot shower, my bed, and maybe my steamy romance novel if I haven't passed out yet is waiting for me," I tell her as I head to the employee backroom.
"Want me to give you a lift home since someone decided to leave their car?" she questions.
"It's only two blocks away from here. I'll be there in ten minutes, maybe even less," I tell her as I tug on my jacket. "You're staying here still right?"
"Yeah, I have some things to finish up and then I'm heading home. Call me when you reach home, okay? I don't need to think you got mugged on the way there," she points at me.
"I will mother, see you later," I say with a wave of the hand as I walk out the bar. I feel the cold air nipping at my ear and I zip my jacket so I can cover half my face inside. "Just my luck, the one day I don't have my car with me," I mutter to myself as I walk down the sidewalk, digging my hands into the pockets. I hear a car honking behind me, and I turn to see the police car that dropped me off earlier.
"You need a lift?" Jason questions as he rolls down the window.
"We're you here the whole time?" I ask incredulously.
"Figured your friend would still be dealing with things and did you really think I was going to let you walk home? In the dark and while it's freezing?" he questions. "Just get in and I'll drop you off." I eye him suspiciously but decide to take his offer, the sooner I get home the sooner I can do what I have planned.
"Thanks again," I tell him once I'm back inside. I rattle off the street name to him and it's a three-minute drive back to my place.
"This is the place," I tell him as he slows down in front of the building. "Thanks," I tell him as I get out.
"Have a good night Victoria," he tells me, a smirk on his lips.
"You too," I reply with a small smile before quickly walking inside straight to the elevators. Today was one day I wish I never experienced and then I have a cop dropping me home. At this point, I'm ready for tomorrow to come.

"Did you hear what happened yesterday at that bar? Didn't you say you worked at that bar sometimes?" Fuck, this woman can be fucking chatty, doesn't she know when to take a break? From what I heard about her, last year she ousted the teacher that's currently on maternity leave over the fact she's pregnant.
"Camryn, isn't your free period almost over?" I ask with a tight smile.
"Oh yes, look at the time. We'll for sure talk about this later," she says before scampering out the room. I can feel a headache coming on after listening to her talk for forty minutes straight. My office is a nurse's office, not a gossip room. The pager in the room rings and oh how I wish I could take a power nap right now.
"Victoria speaking," I say to the person on the other line.
"Hi Victoria, It's Grace, could you come over to room one-o-five, I have a student not feeling well," she tells me.
"Yeah, I'll be right over," I tell her as I cut the line. Since it's the first-grade class it's only a couple of doors down from my office. "Knock knock," I say, tapping on the door lightly. They all immediately greet me since most of them stop by out of curiosity to see the school's nurse's room, so adorable.
"Victoria, thank goodness you're here. This one hasn't been feeling well since before lunch," Grace says waving me over to a student she's kneeling beside. I cross over to her where the kid is coughing heavily but the exhaustion is clear on his face.
"I'll take him to my office, let him rest there for a bit before calling his guardian. I can take his belongings now and leave it there for when he leaves," I ask Grace.
"That's perfect, let me grab it for you." She gathers his things quickly and passes them over to me.
"Oli, you're going to go rest up in the nurse's office before she calls your uncle okay," she tells the boy named Oli. He nods his head tiredly, and I hold out my hand for him as his small hand is engulfed in mine. He feels warm and now I'm a hundred percent sure he's most likely running a low-grade fever. We slowly walk back down the hall to the office and lead him inside. I place his things on a chair and lead him to one of the hospital like beds we have here.
"Oli, you can take off your shoes for me and then can you sit up here?" I ask him. I watch him carefully so he doesn't get dizzy as he sits on the bed. I go wash my hands before strapping on a pair of gloves and grabbing my equipment. "Here, open your mouth and close it, I'm going to take your temperature," I tell him as I hold out the disposable thermometer.
I wait to minutes for it to beep before checking the temperature, thirty-eight point four celcius. Not very high but enough to determine he has a fever. I throw out the thermometer and then check his throat and see it's also red.
"Oli, did you have lunch today?" I ask in a soft voice. He shakes his tiredly and I figured that might be the case. I hand him a cup of water, make sure he drinks it all before throwing it out.
"Okay, here's what we'll do. You lie down for now while I call up your guardian, okay?" I ask with a soft smile. He gives me another nod and I place a blanket to cover him. I go to throw out the gloves I'm wearing and wash my hands again and I see he's already fast asleep. Alright, now to call his guardian. I go to my filing cabinet and grab the file for Grace's class, skimming through for Oli's name. Once I've located it, I dial the number that's on the paper.
"Hello?" a male voice asks once the phone connects.
"Hi, this is the school nurse at you're nephew's school. Oli isn't feeling well, he's been coughing and has a low fever. He's also skipped lunch, no appetite since he's not feeling well. Would you be able to pick him up?" I ask.
"I'm not that far so I'll be there in less than five minutes," is all he says before hanging up. I look at my phone and click my tongue, some people can be so rude. I hear whimpering from the bed Oli is lying in and I go over to check on him and see he's crying in his sleep.
"I wonder what you're seeing in your dreams Oli?" I whisper as I grab a tissue, dabbing at his cheeks. I hear a knock on the door and I whirl around and my eyes widen when I see the sexy cop that dropped me home more than twelve hours ago standing across from me. I look at him before looking back down at Oli. Fuck, should have looked at the contact information more carefully.

A/N So I'm currently hotspotting my phone data to my computer because my internet has been out for the whole day, desperate times call for desperate measures. Especially since I had half a chapter written last night and planned to finish the rest tonight to publish. *sigh, what an inconvenience but what can you do at this point*
Anyways, thoughts on the chapter? Jason finally came in and I know a lot of you were eagerly awaiting that! Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments.
And one other thing to add, I'm hoping every single one of you is doing okay at this time, I'm doing good as well at the moment.
Also, another note, since I'll be doing frequent updates, I doubt I'll be announcing on my profile so often -I know it would get annoying with everyday announcements ><- so be sure to add the story to your library so you receive notifications!
And on a final note because I have to get this off my chest, there's a show I've been watching and after three seasons the MC confess their love but one of them passes away. I waited 3 seasons for that moment only for it to be taken away in two minutes😭😞
