48. There's no plan

Elijah stood in the doorway unable to enter the room, his eyes never straying away from Maeve. He rested his hands in the pocket of his pants. Maverick stood by the barrier, his palms stretched open and eyes closed. He attempted to break it but kept failing with each attempt.

Kol leaned against the wall opposite the living room, his foot up on the wall and arms crossed. He impatiently pushed himself off of it and turned to Elijah, "we know she's going to wake up. Let me go and set the record straight with that doppelganger." pleaded Kol. Although he pleaded his case, his anger showed mercilessly in his tone.

"Kol, when she wakes up she needs to have everyone she cares about, around her. If──God forbid, if she is still in the hold of the prophecy we are the only ones who can keep her grounded." Elijah made the case on point sharply looking at his brother.

"Where is Rebekah then? Caroline?"

"Right here." said Rebekah and stood in the doorway next to Elijah. Caroline pushed past them and stepped inside, her eyes immediately going to Maeve to see if she had awakened.

"She still has the darkness, doesn't she?" asked Rebekah grimly. "And she still saved you?"

Kol gritted his teeth before he said, "the last thing she did was help me. Despite knowing what they could do, she protected me. I just don't understand why?"

"Because we cared for her." Caroline said with a wavering voice. "Klaus gave her that laughter she trusted from Damon. You gave her the friendship we were supposed to."

"Elena doesn't deserve to get the cure." declared Rebekah looking at her brothers. "Not after all of this."

"Of course you are still thinking about the cure." snapped Kol.

"Enough!" Elijah interjected. "While Rebekah you are right that Elena does not deserve to get the cure, right now we have to worry about Maeve. When she wakes up, we are not sure if it will be her whom we face or that darkness that had latched itself to her like a poltergeist."

A gasp filtered the room drawing everyone's attention. "What happened?" she asked breathlessly. Maeve looked at everyone with a bewildered gaze. Her eyes were filled with tears and her hair was messy. She looked disheveled and weak. "Ho---h---h---how did I get here? What happened?"

Everyone looked at each other before turning back to Maeve. Maeve studied everyone's looks and expression. "She did something, didn't she?"

"She did but something good...sort of." Caroline said, her tone serious but her eyes worried. "Let's forget about it."

"What did she do?"

Caroline looked at Klaus pleading to not say anything but Klaus was not going to comply. "Elena killed you because you tried saving Kol from her and help Jeremy." he explained.

Maeve groaned in response. "That bitch better not get the cure. She does not get the cure."

"She won't. I'll make sure of it." Rebekah told her assertively and in assurance.

"Go before they leave you behind. Good luck."

Rebekah's features softened immediately. "Are you sure? Are you okay?"

Maeve darkly scoffed before saying, "I'll be. Three originals as bodyguards, killer dark side and a prophesied death. What more could go wrong than it already has?" a sour look covered everyone's faces just as she did. She looked around the room, "what? Hey, I can joke. Self-saffeing jokes."

"I'll go then. Take care of her will you?" Rebekah glanced around the room seeing everyone curtly nod their heads.

"Morning Sunshine" Maeve heard an obnoxious voice greet. She groaned and shifted on her side on the couch.

"You look pathetic."

"Said the very definition of the word." groaned Maeve.

"I am only stuck here until Bonnie's spell locking me in here wears off. Then I'll look different. Angrier perhaps." Klaus replied condescendingly.

"My friends will be back with the cure by then so I can shove it down your throat."

"I'm an Original. What makes you think my entire vampire bloodline won't be cured along with me? i.e you." Klaus responded.

"You know what I think? I think that's impossible. I think the moment you stop being a vampire our whole blood connection to you is broken and your sire line ceases to exist. So whatever happens to you, happens only to you. Which means, I can kill your ass, and no one else has to die."

"Right you are, Tyler. Just one loophole there." Maeve pointed out. "You know what I think? You'll be the first to die when that happens." She turned to Klaus again. His eyes sharpened and hands fisted. After the last few days, he had picked up on signs when the dark side took control of Maeve's body.

"Tyler died to become a hybrid. So, when he shoves that cure down your throat. You will become a human, yes. But because the vampire making magic within your blood will cease to exist, and every vampire you ever turned dies. Because the magic is gone." She turned to look at Tyler again, "which also means that you die, Stefan dies, Damon dies. Most of all Elena dies. You know what──go for it. Get the cure and let's get rid of the problem. The reason behind everything."

"You have a lot of nerve to talk. You are still defending him? After everything he's done? He killed my mom."

"And you have what? Not done anything? Just been victims? Bitch please. Let's make a list, shall we? Finn died, Kol almost did. You have led this man to his death twice. Stabbed Rebekah in the back despite her helping you. What now? What should we say about this?"

"Don't forget yourself, love." Klaus stepped around and stood next to her. "You have killed her, tortured her, used her as bait. Where does that put you?"

"It doesn't change the fact that she is still the one with too much power and who sided with the one who destroyed our lives."

Maeve shifted her body weight from one to another and eyed the hybrid with a deathly glare. Confused at first, Tyler looked at her with a glare and then all of a sudden dropped down on his knees groaning in pain. Klaus turned slightly to look at Maeve. Her eyes were different then many times he had seen before. A golden ring outlined her usual red eyes like mimicking the solar eclipse.

Klaus wasn't sure why the sudden change in Maeve's eyes and the energy she held to herself filled him with worry.

"Ahhh, stop it." Tyler grunted.

"Now why should I? Aren't I just as evil?" Maeve scoffed, stopping the spell, "step ahead a little, I dare you. I might show you, of just how powerful I am compared to your whiny pathetic ass." Tyler got up on his feet sending a death glare at Maeve.

Klaus physically pulled Maeve away from the barrier that separated them from Tyler.

"Maeve. Listen to me." Klaus said with his tone strong and directive. "Calm down." Maeve kept glaring at him, glancing over his shoulder at Tyler every few seconds. "Maeve!" called out Klaus, his voice reflecting a sense of anger.

She looked back at him. "You are irritating, do you know that. All of you."

"One of the many good qualities, I'm afraid. Cannot do anything about it." replied Klaus.

"You really think, I am going to give up? I finally have my way. I'm not letting go." she pushed Klaus aside forcibly.

Maeve addressed Klaus again, who now stood on this feet staring at Maeve cautiously. "A Serene witch is powerful and stronger than any average witch, but unfortunately, they have their limitations too." began Maeve.

"Expression magic is a form that draws from the mind of the being and nature around. It binds on the natural occurrence and infiltrates the mind. Nothing about the form of magic could ever be pure as the strength is drawn many times from places with grave past." she explained. "What your Maeve fails to understand is, we are stronger than who came before us. We are the one of a kind hybrids. Frankly, better than you. It is easy for taking over this stupid barrier."

Maeve strutted to the barrier and placed her palms flat on the barrier. She closed her eyes and breathed in deeply. Calling out to Nature for help, Maeve focused on the energy that flowed to her fingers

Her body was rigid, hands pressed firmly on the barrier. The tips of her fingers glowed a faint white and slowly it appeared as if Maeve was etching her hand print on the barrier. Klaus noticed the faint smoke erupting from near Maeve's fingertips. Fearing she might be burning her skin, Klaus went to touch her shoulder but he couldn't. As soon as he touched her shoulder, a force repelled him back.

He walked around to stand next to Maeve, only to see her eyes closed, and muttering.

"Maeve" he glanced at her in uncertainty. The energy that filled up the air with every passing second of Maeve attempting at working the spell, made Klaus feel worried. It wasn't something he ever felt. The energy was dense and mimicked the eeriness of terror. The temperature fluctuated in the room, as did the lights. Klaus looked around panicked before he yelled her name again.

She shot her eyes open. Her eyes were blood red with a Golden rim to them. The light was like a fire; burning like a flame around the red fury in her eyes. He stared in fear of what Maeve had become.

"Don't! What are you doing? I have it. Almost there." shouted Maeve suddenly. Klaus looked alarmed and scared as was Tyler. Instinctively he pushed himself away from the barrier and situated himself in a way that he was taking cover.

"You really think you can stop me? You don't have what it takes. You're weak. I am the only one who can make you strong."

"Maeve!" Klaus shouted in an hopeful attempt of drawing her back to him. His voice made Maeve flinch and withdraw her hand from the barrier. She looked at the palm of her hand, that was red now.

Maeve breathed heavily just as she caught the last glimpse of her hand print on the invisible barrier.

"I remember everything, Nik. I remember everything. She tried to kill me." Maeve told him growing out of her mind and trembling from fear.

"If anyone tries to undo expression magic, they are aiming for suicide. She knew that. She wanted to kill me, Nik. I don't know what to do."

"We'll figure it out. I promise."

"I don't know how, Nik and the fact that I don't know scares me." She looked at him wryly unsure of everything.

Her vision blurred before the room began to spin. She stretched out her hands to balance herself. Slowly her vision was covered in black spots. The last thing she saw was Klaus reaching for her before darkness consumed her.
