ch 12
Amelia and Minho led Thomas through the woods later that afternoon. The passed the Deadheads and stream. They were walking to the back of the woods. They were making their way to the Map Room where all Runners go after every run to document the maze. It was necessary for it to be father way from everyone else so no one would sneak in.
"Hey, where are we going?" Thomas asked, eyes observing the area.
"You'll see," Minho told him.
They finally reached the Map Room. No one was allowed inside if the person wasn't a runner. Minho pushed open the door to reveal a big round table covered by a white cloth over it.
Thomas looked around and he took in the drawings of the Maze that were taped up around the walls.
Amelia removed the white cloth that covered the model of the maze the runners had built over the years.
Thomas' eyes are wide as he took in the map of the Maze.
"It's the maze. All of it," Minho said.
Thomas furrowed his brows as he examined the miniature maze, "What do you mean All of it? I thought you were still mapping it."
"There's nothing left to map."
"Lia and I have run every inch of it ourselves Every cycle. Every pattern," Minho informed him. Amelia remembered pathway. The two had ran the maze for three years so they knew the maze better than anyone. "If there was a way out, we would have found it by now."
"Why haven't you told anyone this?" Thomas asked in confusion, and he looked at the two.
"It was Alby's call," the brunette said. She had a part in wanting to give everyone hope until they found a way out someday.
"People needed to believe we had a chance of getting out," Minho added. He grabbed the device they found and handed it over to Thomas. "But maybe now. . .we have a real chance."
They now had a chance to get out of this place. "Take a look at this. About a year ago, we started exploring these outer sections and we saw markings on some of the concrete. We found these numbers printed on the walls. Sections One through Eight," Minho explained.
"See, the way it works, is every night, when the maze changes. . . it opens up a new section. So today, Section Six was open. Tomorrow, it'll be Four, then Eight, then Three. The pattern always stays the same," Minho said. It took them a while to figure it out but when they did they knew where to go.
Amelia fiddled with her necklace as Thomas studied the map with Minho.
"What's so special about Seven?" Thomas asked them, holding the device.
"We don't know but last night, when we killed that Griever, Section Seven was open. I think it must be where it comes from," Amelia said. "Tomorrow, the three of us are gonna take a closer look."
"Hey!" Clint and Jeff came running to the Map Room but they stood outside the room. Amelia immediately threw the cloth over the map to hide it.
"What are you guys doing? You're not allowed in here," Minho told the two med-jacks
"Sorry, it's just the uhh," Jeff panted only for Clint to answer for him. "It's the girl."
"Is she awake?"
"You could say that."
Clint and Jeff led the three to where the girl had been. There was a loud commotion near the tower where the boys crowded around. Amelia frowned in confusion wondering what was going on?
They halted next to Chuck who was smiling at the scene.
"Chuck, what's going on?" Thomas asked the curly haired boy who was laughing.
He simply said while pointing to the tower, "Girls are awesome."
Amelia watched as rocks came flying down from the top along with a girl's voice. She was telling them to leave her alone. The Gladers from below used basket and bins to protect their heads from the flying rocks.
"Watch your head!"
Amelia almost laughed at the situation. It was understandable in the girl's situation. She woke up and she was suddenly surrounded by only boys. It had to have been terrifying for her.
"We come in peace!"
"Hey throw one more of those things-" A rock had landed on Gally's head before he got to finish his sentence. Amelia smiled to herself. He deserved that one.
She made her way over to Newt. "I don't think she likes us very much," Newt exclaimed, hiding under Winston's wooden shield.
"What do you want from me?" the girl screamed as she continued to throw rocks.
"Hey we just wanna talk!" Thomas yelled out, hands outstretched to catch her attention while trying to dodge the rocks.
"I'm warning you!" The rocks were being thrown faster, getting harder for some of the boys to dodge it. Amelia looked at the boys who and she went to stand at Andy and Frypan's side.
"Hey!" Amelia called out as a rock gets thrown her way before she yelled out. "It's Amelia!"
The flying rocks suddenly seized along with the girl's screaming. Amelia looked up just when the girl's head popped out from the top to look down. The two made eye contact and she waited before saying, "I'm going to come up."
She looked to her right for Thomas and she added, "With Thomas, okay?"
Gally did not like that idea at all. "Lia. . ."
Amelia looked at Gally and she said, "Just us."
The girl's head disappeared and she waited a moment. When the rocks didn't come flying down she took that as a yes. She looked over at Thomas and he nodded.
She gave Newt a reassuring nod before she and Thomas went up the wooden ladder.
"We're coming up," Thomas said.
The two slowly ascended up the steps before Amelia opened the latch that led to the top. Amelia eyes widened when she saw the dark haired girl holding a knife towards her.
"Oh, wow!"
She made eye contact with the blue eyed girl and she held out her hands as she slowly pushed herself up. "Hey, I'm not gonna hurt you. It's just me and Thomas," Amelia said as she moved her body to the side to let Thomas up. Thomas came into view and his eyes were also wide when he saw the knife now pointed at him.
"Whoa whoa whoa. . .Easy all right." Thomas mumbled, his hand out as well.
"Where am I? What is this place? Why can't I remember anything?" the girl asked in a panicked tone as Thomas closed the latch. She held tighter on to the knife in her hand.
"This-This is all normal. We've all been through this," Thomas tried to explain, nervous about the fact that he could get stabbed at any time. She was panicking and even if she didn't want to, she still would.
"You'll get your name back in a few days or so unless you're like me and found out-"
"-Teresa," The dark haired girl cut Amelia off, her knife still pointed in between them.
"What?"
"My name," she said, emphasizing. "It's Teresa."
Amelia and Thomas exchanged glances once more. "Uh Okay, well I'm Thomas and this is Lia," Thomas said and Amelia added, "Short for Amelia."
The girl simply glared, still not dropping the knife in her hand. "But you already knew that though I guess, huh?" Thomas said.
"They said I kept saying your names in my sleep," Teresa told them, pointing the knife from Thomas to Amelia. "Who are you?"
"We don't know. We can't remember," Lia answered her. "Just our names and that's it. Everything else we know, we learned here."
"None of us here can remember anything," Thomas added in. "We all woke up here just like you did."
"Hey, I promise we're. . ." Thomas's voice trailed off as he moved closer to Teresa. Amelia watched in anticipation as Thomas tried to get a hold of the still pointed at him. "I'm gonna take this."
"Okay."
Amelia let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding once Teresa let Thomas take the knife from her. She gave the girl a smile.
"What's going on up there?" Gally called out from below. Amelia got up to see the other gladers waiting and watching them patiently.
"Is she coming down?" Newt asked her.
"Um. . ." Amelia turned to Teresa and the girl just stared at her. "Hey, listen, you guys just give us a second, okay?" she said. Gally had been a bit reluctant as the gladers all dispersed to give the three some privacy. Newt tapped the boy on the shoulder and the two walked off together.
Amelia sat down on the wooden flooring, her legs dangling off the edge. Teresa situated in between her and Thomas. They had prompted to staying silent for a few moments before Thomas handed the note.
"She's the last one," Teresa read the note. "What does that mean?"
"I'm not sure. Ever since you came up, that Box hasn't gone back down," Thomas informed her pointing towards the metal cage.
"It where we get our supplies from every month," Amelia said as her hand move to the back of her neck to play with the chain of her necklace.
"I just think it's got everyone a little worried. Especially Gally," Thomas said, referring to the tall Builder who stood not too far from the tree house watching them with arms crossed. He had been watching them from a far.
"Are you sure you don't remember anything else?"
"I remember water feeling like I was drowning. These faces staring at me and this woman's voice saying the same thing over and over," Teresa said. Amelia knew that feeling all too well. From time to time she gets dreams about drowning and the various blurry faces. She has never been able to figure any of it out.
"Wicked is good," Thomas said. Amelia looked at Thomas when she heard the phrase.
"Ever since I've been here, I've had these dreams. Well, I thought they were dreams," Thomas admitted. He moved away from the edge to look at the two girls. "You were there, Teresa. You as well, Lia."
"Me?" Amelia asked surprised. "Yeah."
Thomas turned to Teresa, "You told me you had no choice."
Amelia furrowed her brows in confusion. "What was I doing in your dream?" Amelia asked the boy. Thomas turned to the girl. "You didn't say anything. All I remember is you dragging me away, us running away from someone or something. I didn't see your face but I saw the necklace. I recognized you by the necklace."
Amelia reached for her necklace. She had known Thomas before. The two turned to Amelia waiting for her to say something. Since it seemed like they knew each other before they were send into the maze, maybe she had remembered something as well.
"Have you had similar dreams before?"
"I don't know what to tell you two. All of my dreams are the same, I can never make out the faces in my dreams so I don't know if you two were even there," Amelia told them. She had tried everyday not to remember ot because she hated reliving that feeling of suffocation and emptiness.
"What does it mean?"
"I don't know," Thomas sighed, "I just always get pieces."
"And the others don't remember anything?" Teresa asked Amelia and she shook her head. "Not that I know of." Even if they did, they wouldn't tell her about it.
Amelia looked over to the boys who were talking as she stared over at them. Some have gone back to work while still glancing over here while others just waited for them to be finished.
Teresa rummaged something in her jeans, pulling out three long cylindrical tubes. "These were in my pocket when I came up," Teresa said.
Thomas took one of the tubes while Amelia took the other two. Amelia inspected the blue liquid inside as Thomas traced the engraved letters on the container. "W.C.K.D."
"Wicked is good."
"What if we were sent here for a reason?" Teresa said as she looked between the two. The two looked up at the same time.
"Do you think?" Amelia asked the brunette boy. She inspected the tubes and she frowned when she realized they were syringes.
"Alby." Thomas looked at Amelia.
Getting off the edge of the tree house, Thomas motioned for the girls to follow him down. Amelia stood up and immediately followed after him. She turned to Teresa and beckoned her to come along.
