14 - The Truth
"Let's tuck it in for the night!" Jorge ordered after we walked for a few hours. It was still dark and everyone seemed tired, their walks slowing down, so we agreed.
I lay my backpack down on an empty spot.
"I'm sleeping.." Minho lay his backpack next to me. "Right here."
"I'll sleep here." Newt decided, lying down on the other side of me.
I gave both of them a glance before I grabbed my stuff and took it to another place, away from everyone. First of all, I didn't want to be close to anyone or wake up by them cuddling me, and I wasn't gonna let them lay next to me like it was nothing!
Newt frowned deeply, though his gaze was cold while Minho just stared at me with pure offend.
"What the hell was that for?" Minho asked.
"Don't sleep next to me," I responded as casually as possible.
Minho sighed and lay down on his chosen spot, but Newt walked over to me. He put his hand on my shoulder and said something, but it got blurred in just a second. Then I saw it again.
The flashing lights of the pub blinded my eyes, but I couldn't blink. I couldn't move, just freeze in place as I felt hands trail over my body, men creeping up toward me. My breathing hitched when I heard the voice of my father saying one of the things he said in the two nights when he.. did stuff.
"Jane!" A shake on my shoulders made me come back to reality.
Rye's concerned face appeared in front of me. He gently let go of my shoulders once he saw me awake from whatever happened.
"Yes?" I finally managed to get out with a cracking voice.
Rye and I got interrupted by Newt moving the boy to the side and pulling me with him by the wrist. He wasn't rough or threatening, but I had seen him softer.
"What happened?" He questioned when we arrived further away from the others, standing in between some trees.
I swallowed. "Nothing."
Newt's eyes twitched around my face. "Just tell the truth."
"Why would I?"
Denying wouldn't work anyways. He knew I was lying. He always knew!
"Because I want to help." Newt started as I felt more uncomfortable by being so close to him, all alone in the dark woods. Of course, I trusted Newt, but it was still tensing me up.
"And because I care about you."
I bit my lip and blinked some tears that were burning in my eyes away, or tried, at least.
"Jane.." Newt started. He wanted to wipe some of my tears away by cupping my face, so raised his hands.. but I flinched hard, somehow, and took steps back until my back hit a tree.
My mind started spinning and the fact I didn't know what was happening, made it worse. Newt gave me a hurt and confused glance before he walked closer to me again, not knowing what was going on either.
I blinked dozens of times, trying to get the images that were slowly growing in my vision away, but it didn't work. The lights and men were there again, the music, and even the smell.
"Jane?" Newt's worried voice echoed in my ears. I could still see him, faded through the images.
Before I knew it, I had broken down on the ground when Newt tried to touch me again. He had no clue what was going on!
The hands trickled up my body, touching parts I wished to never be touched before. I let out a cry and felt my chest tighten again.
"Please don't," I whispered when Newt took me in his arms. "Newt." I quietly warned when he didn't stop pulling me closer. I felt like I couldn't breathe, the hands of the men getting rougher.
"Don't touch me." I cried out.
Newt's movements stopped in shock for a second, but then he started rubbing my back.
I felt awful, but didn't pull away.
"I got you, love." Newt talked quietly, his voice deep. "You're alright."
I sobbed loudly, yet saw the images and felt the hands moving away slowly. Newt actually helped me.
"Newt.." I trailed off, not knowing what I wanted to say as I recovered from everything. My head was buried in his chest and I was able to feel the comfort instead of scariness when someone touched me, but just for a while.
"It's okay." He whispered.
"I'm sorry." I cried and sniffed.
I was sorry for leaving him, sorry for crying in front of him once again, sorry for not telling him what happened right away, sorry for not letting him comfort and touch me.. sorry for everything.
Yeah, I was definitely sorry.
"You don't have to be sorry." Newt moved some of my hair out of my face. "No need to apologize, love."
I almost cried even louder at his sweetness. "I saw-." I took a raspy breath. "I felt-."
But the words just wouldn't come out of my mouth. Like they were poison on my tongue.
"You're safe." Newt comforted me. "I've got you."
And god, how much I missed that kind of comfort.. it was exactly what I needed at that point, and slowly I started to calm down, sucking in some more oxygen every few seconds.
Newt was about to say something, then closed his mouth and just looked at me in pity and worry.
"I can tell you what happened." I decided out loud with a shaky voice.
Newt gave me a very poor smile.
"Only if you're comfortable with it. Don't feel forced, all right?"
I nodded and took a deep breath. "After I 'died', I got picked up by this group, as I said." I took a long pause. "And that group was full of men. Just men. I was the only girl there.. in between mostly grown-ups."
The realization hit Newt, I could see it on his breaking face. His mouth fell slightly open, a small cry escaping it.
"Then this guy.. he forced me to sit with his friends at dinner and asked me to go to this pub, which I didn't agree on." I tried to wipe more tears away.
"But they forced me to go in there too and poured a drink in my mouth.. some kind of drug."
"Oh, god," Newt mumbled, his eyes big in more pity.
"And then he started touching me, and more men followed.." I cleared my throat to remove the lump in it. "That one boy appeared again, he got pretty rough and intense and it kept going on for what felt like hours, Newt."
He took my head in his hand and pulled me closer to my chest.
"I'm so proud you told me, love." He started, probably finding it hard to reply to the shocking thing.
"And you're safe now.. right here." He whispered. The expression on his face broke my heart into pieces. He looked so sad and worried!
Then I considered telling him about my father too, so looked down, which Newt immediately noticed.
"Is there more?" He asked. "You can talk to me."
I looked up with watery eyes, my lip trembling at the thought of the nights with my father. "I got a memory."
Newt listened to me attentively, his beautiful eyes looking into mine the whole time as he still had his arms wrapped around me, me doing the same to him.
"It was about my father." I swallowed. "I was ten, but it had been going on for a while. He forced to-." And at that point, I started stammering, mixing everything in a loud sob.
"Shh, it's okay." Newt slowly rocked us back and forth. "Take your time. All the time you need."
"He forced me to get rid of- put out my-." Eventually, I just motioned at my clothes again, just like with Rye. "And then he... he r-r.." I averted my eyes from Newt, not able to pronounce the word. "And I felt it. Still can."
Newt tensed up a lot, tightening his grip on me in.. frustration? "How could they?" He wondered through his teeth. "Awful people."
My fist clenched in Newt's shirt out of hurt and all the emotions that were in me. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
"For what, love?" Newt cupped my face. "There's nothing you need to be sorry for."
I squeezed my eyes shut and felt the tears fall again. Newt sighed and pulled me straight up, so I sat in front of him.
"Jane." He started, his hands never leaving my cheeks while I opened my eyes. "Whatever those men did to you, has nothing to do with your personality." He wiped the tears away with his thumb, though they kept coming. "You didn't ask for it. These people are just cruel.. so please don't apologize. Don't think it's your fault, or anything else." Newt paused. "You survived it, held on strong, and even told me what happened. That's a lot already. And I will keep on saying, no matter if I just reunited with you for a day... and it might be very upsetting for you.. that I am proud of you. For everything."
I sniffed and couldn't help myself to wrap my arms around Newt once again.
"Thank you, Newt."
"Hey, I know this won't let everything go away yet," Newt explained. "But we'll work on it."
"Together," I assured, some confidence coming back.
"Are you okay with me touching you now?" Newt questioned when everything got through his mind.
"Right now I am," I whispered. "But not always."
He pulled me closer. "That's okay. You'll heal."
"Can I?" I breathed, the dream of doing that flashing right in front of me. I wished that I could, but didn't know the answer.
"We'll make sure of that. I'll make sure of it." Newt confirmed. "Now.. can you try to catch some sleep?"
I nodded. "Good night then, Newt. And thank you."
"You'll be okay," Newt stated once again. "Good night, Jane."
"Thank you so much," I muttered before my eyes closed.
