CHAPTER SIXTEEN

November 30th, 2002
12:01 A.M.
Christina's POV

The blonde stirred a little in her sleep as she groaned out of pure exhaustion, rubbing her eyes a little bit before sighing to herself. Her blue eyes strained themselves in order to open and she immediately felt an aching in her throat, which made her hand instinctively go there to see what was wrong, only for her skin to throb in agony and that made her deduce that there was a bruise there. But from what?

Christina lifted her head out of utter bewilderment as a freezing cold gust of wind hit her fragile body, making her shiver almost violently. "What the fuck...?" she mumbled weakly as she looked in front of her. She squeezed her eyes shut before opening them back up and her vision was finally clear as she stared ahead. She then tilted her head out of confusion when all she could see was near pitch black darkness, which wasn't normal for where she would usually wake up.

That was when she finally processed what she was exactly lying on as she felt the granite bars with her hands, and she used them to guide herself to her feet. Christina frantically looked around out of pure puzzlement, squinting her eyes in order to have the ability to see anything, but it was nearly impossible since it was likely way past midnight at this point. She could, however, hear the howling wind and the many cars honking their horns in the distance, which only made her perplexity rise drastically.

"Hello?!" she called out, her voice coming out in a rasp whisper, which made her clutch her throat again. The events of however long ago came back to her at that moment, and she remembered the sensation of the Green Goblin strangling her, which is likely what caused this. Nevertheless, she tried to get the attention of anybody that could be nearby.

"Is anybody there?!" she shouted, her voice not getting any stronger.

"Chris...?" came a female's voice to her right.

"Who is that?!" she said in a panic, spinning towards the source of the voice.

"Calm down, it's me," the woman said as she finally entered Christina's line of vision, which made the blonde squint her eyes.

"M.J?"

Mary Jane, clad in a variety of colors when it came to her pajamas, seemed to be just as puzzled as Christina was and it looked as though she had just woken up from a mysterious slumber. This only worried the blonde more because she was being reminded of a similar scenario with her and the redhead several months ago, and she didn't want that to be repeated.

"Do you know where we are, Chris?" M.J asked in a trembling voice as she looked around, walking a foot or two away from the blonde.

"We're at the gates of Heaven," Christina replied sarcastically as she rolled her eyes. "How should I know?"

Mary Jane chuckled humorlessly at that as she shook her head. "Well, we need to figure out a way to get out of wherever the hell we are," she said pointedly.

"It would help if we actually knew where we were in the first place," Chistina said before freezing in place, feeling another chilly burst of wind hit her. "Wait... We're obviously outside, but... if I hear cars way below us, then..."

Christina barely spotted Mary Jane inching closer to a place of wherever they were that the blonde didn't want her to be at.

"WATCH OUT, M.J!" she screeched as she lunged at the redhead and grabbed her hand, just narrowly preventing Mary Jane from tumbling off the edge of the platform they were standing on and she could hear her friend gasping from utter shock at what had just happened. Christina helped her balance herself again just as the wind around them began to pick up speed.

"Christina, where the hell are we?!" Mary Jane yelled in her direction, having to shout over the loud wind.

The blonde looked behind her and sprinted towards a railing that she could see lights illuminating from. She looked to both her left and right and she was able to catch a glimpse of an aerial tramway dozens of feet from her and her best friend. Her stomach plummeted dangerously low as she gripped the railing more tightly, and she managed to look down, only to see the rushing waters of the East River over a hundred feet below her.

"We're on top of the fucking Brooklyn Bridge..." she mumbled just loud enough for Mary Jane to hear.

"LOOK OUT!" the redhead screamed as she yanked Christina down to the ground; mere milliseconds later, an excruciating BOOM erupted in both of their ears and they closed their eyes in order to brace themselves for any pain that would be brought onto them.

Luckily, however, they were completely unharmed and they stood up and stared in the direction of whatever the fuck hit the part of the bridge they were on. Christina's hands clenched into fists as she gritted her teeth and rolled her eyes. "This motherfucker again..." she said lowly.

The Green Goblin was soaring through the night sky on his glider, cackling maniacally as he always did; it was a laugh that Christina had gotten far too sick of hearing, having already heard too much of it at the World Unity Festival over four months prior. But, fortunately for her, the laughter faded away as the Goblin's silhouette got smaller and smaller, and she turned to face Mary Jane.

"Listen to me, M.J, okay?" she said calmly.

"Yeah, I'm listening," Mary Jane replied in a shakier voice.

"I have the feeling something bad's gonna happen," Christina whispered to the redhead, her entire body beginning to tremble. "We have got to find a way off of this bridge, do you understand me?"

"Yeah, of course," M.J. said, close to tears now.

"Okay, now let's โ€“"

Suddenly, a disastrous explosion broke out in a small industrial building close to where the two girls were. They both gasped as they raised their arms up to cover their faces in order to protect themselves from any possible rubble that could hit them. The inferno of fire and destruction was so large that they could feel the heat from the flames rushing towards them. The sounds of the excruciating honking of car horns and vehicles smashing into one another from the force of the eruption sounded in their ears, which made their dread climb higher.

And then Christina could just barely glimpse the cables that held up the tramway snap from where they were attached to... and the tramway began to plummet towards the river, which made the blonde cry out in fear as she cupped a hand over her mouth.

But the cables were snatched by the Green Goblin as he began laughing hysterically again, lifting the tramway back up and towards the bridge.

Christina's eyes widened to their absolute limit when she saw that the monster was headed straight for her and Mary Jane.

"RUN!" she screamed.

_____

Spider-Man's POV

In the billowing wind surrounding the chaos, a figure swung himself onto the roof of one of the smaller buildings of the city using a web he had shot towards another structure. He landed on a narrow ledge, his jaw dropping behind his mask as he examined the utter pandemonium unfolding in front of him.

"Goblin, what have you done...?" Spider-Man asked himself in a whisper as he saw the flames rising from the explosion that had occurred seconds ago.

His heart dropped when he saw the Roosevelt Island tramway traveling to the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge begin to fall, and he used both of his hands to shoot out two webs towards two nearby flagpoles. He then began to step backwards further down the roof as he used the webs to steady himself, nearly snapping the flagpoles in half in the process and he groaned with the effort to slingshot himself towards the bridge.

Once he was at his furthest limit, Spider-Man let go of the webs and launched himself across the rest of the city nearest the East River, using various other webs to connect himself to the bridge once he reached it. He was barely able to glimpse three figures at the very top of the structure, which only made his determination to get to them even greater than it previously was. With one final swing, he flew through the air gracefully before landing on a slim bar that helped hold up the bridge.

Seconds later, a booming voice entered his ears.

"SPIDER-MAN! THIS IS WHY ONLY FOOLS ARE HEROES!"

_____

Christina's POV

"BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN SOME LUNATIC WILL COME ALONG WITH A SADISTIC CHOICE!" the Green Goblin's voice screeched in the blonde's ears as she choked from the force of his left hand gripping her throat.

"LET ME GO, YOU BASTARD!" Christina yelled as she swung her legs about, attempting to fight back just a little bit. She looked down towards the river below and a wave of vertigo crashed into her and she crumpled her legs upwards in order to feel further away.

To her left, she could hear the petrified screams of Mary Jane and she glanced in her direction; she could see the redhead hanging from a cable attached to the bridge with another cable of the Goblin's making. There were tears coursing down her face as she tried her hardest to breathe through the sobs, especially when her house slippers left her feet and fell towards the icy cold water below; this only made M.J's screams even louder as she closed her eyes out of terror.

"LET DIE THE TWO WOMEN YOU CARE ABOUT!" the monster bellowed and he held Christina up higher, causing her to shriek out of fright as she tried to use her hands to remove his from her neck.

"LET ME GO!" she howled as she closed her own eyes, ready for her inevitable fate that was awaiting her down below.

"OR... SUFFER THE LITTLE CHILDREN..." the Goblin continued.

For the first time, it occurred to Christina that there weren't just people in the tramway car that the Goblin was holding. There were terrified children pleading for their lives along with two or three chaperones clamoring around inside with said children. This made the blonde's eyes widen out of horror, and she immediately turned her head to face the figure standing fifty feet in front of and below her.

"SAVE THE CHILDREN, SPIDER-MAN!" she screamed as loudly as she could. "SAVE THEM AND M.J!"

"YES, SAVE THE CHILDREN, SPIDER-MAN!" the Green Goblin shouted in a mocking tone, his eyes widening out of satisfaction from what he was doing. "LISTEN TO WHAT SHE SAYS! JUST LIKE I LISTENED TO HER MOMMY DEAREST BEFORE I FINISHED HER OFF!"

Christina froze the process of her struggling as she slowly turned her head to face her monster, her tear-filled eyes even wider than ever as she stared into his. "What the fuck are you talking about...?" she whimpered as a single tear fell down her right cheek.

"Didn't you hear, Christina? I stopped by to say hello to your precious mother!" the Green Goblin snarled at her, and Christina could have sworn that her heart stopped beating.

The blonde looked away as she struggled to breathe from the pure surprise she felt in her soul; she suddenly wished that the man holding her away from Death's grasp would just get it over with and that Spider-Man wouldn't save her. She prayed to the Lord above that what he had just said to her wasn't true. He must have been lying, as he didn't know where Margaret lived. It was impossible to find her!

But a sliver of Christina's subconscious had a feeling that what he was saying was true....

"Make your choice, Spider-Man," the Goblin growled loudly. "And see how a hero is rewarded."

"DON'T DO IT, GOBLIN!" Christina could barely hear Spider-Man scream out of utter terror.

"We are who we choose to be. NOW CHOOSE!"

And Christina felt the Goblin's hand release its grasp on her throat.

The blonde cried out as a scream left her, her stomach flipping from the sensation of the fall. Seconds later, she was able to see the cables around Mary Jane loosen due to a button on the Goblin's glove, which made the redhead fall with her. The continuous screech of Christina's friend as well as the whining of the falling tramway car and the horrified sobs of the children inside were the only sounds that resonated with her; everything else around her was relegated to complete silence.

Christina's own scream died out and she was left in a numb state of shock as she fell further towards her demise and, at this point, she was accepting her whole fate. She was going to die and she was perfectly fine with that.... As long as Spider-Man saved Mary Jane and the kids, she would be happy when she eventually met Death itself and she would be at peace.

Nevertheless, she was still scared of what it would feel like when she hit the water. Would she die instantly or would she live long enough to drown in the river since she wasn't the best swimmer? What would hurt worse? The pain from the force of hitting the water or the agony of how cold it would be when she did land in it?

Christina didn't want to know but she was bound to find out regardless.

After five seconds of falling, she did feel a force against her and arms wrap around her, which made her grunt out of surprise as she looked to see who caught her.

Half a second later, she could feel Spider-Man also catch Mary Jane and he was straining with the effort of holding both of them with one arm as he swung, all while the redhead continued to scream. Christina had her arms wrapped around Spider-Man's neck as tightly as they could and she rested her head against his chest before closing her eyes out of worry. She didn't want to risk looking at what was happening, especially when all three of them flipped upside down with the hero's smooth motion of grabbing the fibered cable of the tramway car.

Christina yelped out of fear and she clutched onto Spider-Man even further in order to not fall, and Mary Jane screamed again as she held onto both her and the man holding them away from their deaths.

Spider-Man then shot another web upward, which attached to the bottom of the bridge under where all the cars were at, which made him go back to being right-side-up. This caused both Christina and Mary Jane to nearly lose their grip on his torso and they both cried out. The blonde was just barely able to keep holding onto him and she stayed still so she wouldn't fall any further, and she was more petrified than she had ever been in her entire life, and she was gasping for precious oxygen as she finally began to cry out of horror.

"You two are going to be okay!" Spider-Man yelled in a strained but gentle voice, and Christina frantically nodded her head but she closed her eyes again.

"Ahoy up there!"

Christina finally opened her eyes and looked downward, and she was able to see a large motorboat about thirty away from them. She didn't know who was on there, but she could tell that the voice that had called out to them was that of an older man.

"We're gonna bring the barge right under you!" the man shouted up at them.

The blonde sighed with utter relief but the whooshing sound of the Goblin's glider echoed in the night, which made Christina gasp as she looked up, her body shaking as she saw the monster slowly beginning to fly down towards them.

"HE'S COMING BACK!" Mary Jane screamed as she sobbed.

Making a quick decision, Spider-Man faced Christina and, although she couldn't see his face, she could tell he was panicking as well; this surprised her, as superheroes weren't meant to be scared. Then she reminded herself that this was still a human being behind the mask and she scolded herself for being stupid.

"Listen!" he told her and Mary Jane. "I need you two to climb down!"

"I can't..." M.J. whimpered as she squeezed her eyes shut.

"Yes, you can!" Spider-Man shouted sternly.

Christina was barely able to hear a few strands of the web breaking apart and all three of them and the tramway were lowered significantly. She screamed in pure terror as her arms loosened their grip even further and she stared at Spider-Man in disbelief. "DO YOU THINK THAT'S A GOOD IDEA?!" she asked desperately, her eyebrows raised.

"CHRIS!" Spider-Man screamed to get her attention and to bring her back to reality. "You and M.J. can do it! You have to. Please trust me...."

If Christina weren't absolutely delirious in that moment, she would have one hundred percent recognized Spider-Man's voice....

She stared at him for a long moment before reluctantly nodding and glancing down at Mary Jane. "Do as he says, M.J!" she called down to her.

The redhead looked at her out of bewilderment but she nodded as well and removed herself from Spider-Man so she could lower herself down the cable. Christina glanced back up at the hero, her eyes wide out of concern as her heart began to race even faster.

In order to assure her that she would be perfectly safe, Spider-Man leaned in and rested his forehead against hers to provide a small ounce of comfort. "You're going to be fine, both of you," he mumbled to her so she could hear him. "I've got you and I'll make sure nothing happens."

Christina slowly nodded again and used her left hand to grasp the cable, which she used to gently swing over to where she was wrapped around it, beginning to lower herself down to the top of the tramway.

"Hold on tight and go quickly!" he shouted down to them.

The loud engine of the Goblin's glider echoed in Christina's ears and she fearfully glanced in the direction of said monster. "Go quicker, M.J! I'm right behind you!" she yelled.

"Hurry!" Spider-Man bellowed.

"I can't, I can't do it," M.J. cried out as she stared up at the two of them.

"HANG ON, GIRLS!"

The Goblin flew even closer and Christina made sure to hold on to the cable as though it were the last thing she would ever do, as if her life depended on it. Please don't let it be too bad, she prayed in her mind.

The Green Goblin roughly punched Spider-Man in the face, which caused both Christina and Mary Jane to nearly fall from the cable and they screamed hysterically. Honestly, the blonde was amazed that her grip on the rope didn't falter in the slightest, and it really impressed her. Once she got herself back in control, she screamed at the redhead to climb down as far as she could, and that led to them practically sliding down the rope out of desperation.

After about ten seconds, however, Christina felt the dreaded sensation of the cable dropping from Spider-Man's grip because of the Goblin punching him again. She cried out as both she and Mary Jane plummeted even further with the tramway and she was horrified that he wouldn't be able to catch them again. But, after a few moments passed, he did catch the rope with one hand.

The force of said catch, however, caused the women to finally lose their grip on the cable and they quickly descended towards the tramway. While Mary Jane was able to grab onto the slim railing at the top, Christina nearly fell past her and into the water. Luckily, Mary Jane grabbed her hand just in time and held her up from the water. "Hold onto my hand!" she screamed to her, gripping her arm as tightly as she could.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck!" Christina cried out, her face twisted into an expression of trepidation as she tried her hardest to keep holding onto Mary Jane's arm. "Please don't let go!"

"I won't, I promise, Chris!"

The women then began to feel themselves being slowly lowered by Spider-Man and the boat was very close to them now. Christina closed her eyes in anticipation, so she completely missed the other citizens of New York throwing various objects at the Green Goblin and shouting at him and talking all sorts of shit.

Eventually the tramway landed on the boat and Christina instantly let go of Mary Jane's arm and dropped down onto the platform as the sliding door of the car opened. The children inside cheered with relief as they clamored out and surrounded her and the redhead that was on the platform now. The blonde was absolutely worn out and out of breath as she stared up at where Spider-Man was as he dropped the cable. But she was able to weakly smile out of being grateful for him saving the kids, Mary Jane, and her.

Her smile dropped almost instantaneously, however, when she saw something close to the hero.

"SPIDER-MAN, WATCH OUT!" she and Mary Jane both screamed up at him, just hoping he would hear them.

She didn't know what was attached to him, but Christina saw Spider-Man being yanked away from his web and to God knows where as she stared at what was happening in surprise and panic.
