CHAPTER FOUR

CHRISTINA WOKE UP quite suddenly, much to her surprise. Luckily for her, the alarm clock sitting on her nightstand was going off at the same time. But that wasn't what woke her up; in fact, she had no idea what actually caused her to wake up as suddenly as she did.

It was sort of unnerving to her because of how... immediate it felt. But she chose to shrug it off, since it used to happen to her as a child. Instead of worrying about it, she kicked the blankets off of her body and got out of bed. She ran a hand through her tangled blonde hair, groaning at the fact that she always tossed and turned when she slept. It was so annoying but, of course, she couldn't help it.

The teenage girl pulled on a baby blue t-shirt, along with a white skirt and black slip-on shoes. She knew that she dressed like she went to Catholic school, but she couldn't help the fashion that she chose in life. Besides, she was happy with what she wore to school everyday, even if it did earn her a few stares sometimes.

After combing her short, blonde hair and putting it into a ponytail, she grabbed her blue backpack and left the bedroom. Jogging downstairs, the smell of eggs and bacon filled her nostrils as a small smile formed on her face, reaching her eyes when she saw her mother at the stove, cooking breakfast.

"Morning, Mom!" she called out.

Margaret turned around, a small smile gracing her kind face. "Good morning, sweetie," she replied gently, giving her daughter a hug. "Breakfast is ready if you want any."

Christina quickly checked her watch and realized she had enough time to eat. So, she nodded. "Sure, I've got time," she said, smiling back. She then sat down after getting a plate of food. She and her mother talked for a while as they ate, just like old times. They were happy, and nobody could stop that.

Margaret was in her mid-fifties and had tried to keep herself happy after her husband left her. She would do anything to keep her daughter and herself in a cheerful mood and they had mostly gotten over what happened. Despite the fact that she constantly worked for provide money for her family, Christina couldn't deny that Margaret was a good mother.

After a while, the two finished eating and Christina rinsed off the dishes. When she was done, she briefly looked out the window above the sink, and she was definitely feeling a good day on the horizon.

Little did she know, she would end up being wrong... sort of.

"Well, Mom, I'm gonna go ahead and get to school. Don't wanna be late, you know," she told Margaret, who nodded.

"Okay, honey," she replied. "You sure you don't want me to drive you?"

Christina laughed a little as she shook her head. "You don't have to," she said. "Besides, you need to go to work. I'll see you later tonight?"

Margaret nodded, explaining to her that she didn't have a night shift this time, which made the girl happy. After hugging her mother goodbye, Christina stepped out of the house and walked to her car. She opened the door and climbed inside.

She dug through her purse for the car key before finding it and slipping it into the ignition. The engine revved up to life beautifully and she pulled out of the driveway. She then took off down the road, making sure to obey the speed limit.

Christina didn't even know what she was thinking about, since she was so zoned out. She got stuck in traffic a few times, which annoyed her, but she was finally able to turn right.

Just great, she thought to herself. I'm behind the school bus, of course.

She knew she would be behind the thing for a while but, somehow, something managed to distract her.

She saw a person around her age running down the street, supposedly chasing the bus. She saw him grab the banner and it ripped as the school bus sped away. And, once she saw who it was, Christina couldn't help but honk the horn. When the boy turned around, she slowed down and rolled down the window.

"Get in the car, Pete!" she shouted to him.

Peter listened to her immediately, jogging over to the car and getting into the passenger seat. He seemed to be out of breath, and Christina automatically felt sympathy for her best friend.

"What in the world was that?" she asked jokingly. "Late for the bus again?"

"You could say that," he replied, chuckling a little. It was at that moment that Christina noticed something different about Peter.

"You're not wearing glasses," she pointed out. "Was there some eye appointment you didn't tell me about?"

Peter looked at her in slight surprise, but he nodded after a few seconds. "Uh, yeah. Yeah, I did. Got contacts, so I can see better now."

Christina could read Peter like a book, but she decided to not ask questions. "That's great," she replied instead. "You look a little different without glasses, but I can get used to it. You also look better than you did yesterday."

Peter nodded, staring out the passenger side window. "Yeah, I guess I was just nauseous during the field trip," he said, clearly lying.

My God, he's a horrible liar, Christina thought to herself.

She decided not to say anything, however, as she continued the drive to the high school. Maybe Peter did get contacts, it was possible. And maybe he was just nauseous yesterday. Who knew, right?

But Christina did know one thing.

Something was up with Peter Parker. And she didn't know what it was...
