Today's chapter is extra long and has a groundbreaking discovery. I hope you enjoy!:)
We didn't even go back downstairs that night. We stayed up on the astronomy tower until eventually the sun trickled over the horizon.
I woke up to find my head resting on his chest, listening as his slow heartbeat echoed in my ears. I fluttered my eyes open to see the breathtaking sunrise.
Orange and yellow flooded the sky. The moon was a small crescent, still looming in the air. It was beautiful. I didn't want to leave that moment. I just wanted to bask in the sheer beauty of it all.
Nicholas' head perked up as I slid my head off his chest. His eyes were full of tiredness. "It's morning already?" He groaned, suppressing a yawn. I nodded and smiled.
"It is. And we have class today." I said evenly. He rolled his eyes and sat his head back on the solid ground. I stood up and hovered over him for a moment, my eyebrow raised.
"I'm getting up." He mumbled, slowly moving forward. I took his hand and we clambered back down the stairs into the school, which was buzzing with students and teachers.
I sat in the back of History of Magic, winding my pencil through my fingers. Since the second semester had rolled around I was in new class orders, so thankfully Zachary wasn't in my first class.
History of Magic went by rather slowly. We talked a lot about Dumbledore's greatest accomplishments, and how magic is passed on through the family tree- pretty boring if you ask me.
My next class was Transfiguration, which was utterly dreadful.
I was at my desk, minding my business, scribbling down notes as the teacher spoke, and then suddenly a tap on my shoulder caused me to turn around.
I turned to see a girl with deep red hair and emerald eyes looking at me. Somehow her face surfaced some sort of pity on it. She handed me a note and whispered "I'm sorry."
I turned back around and opened the note. "Whoring around with Tom, Zachary, and Nicholas? I guess the only one left is Adam. After that you'll officially be a Riddle slut." It read. I was completely in shock.
But I recognized the handwriting immediately, it was Draco's. Of course he'd do something like this. Ever since he and Nicholas got into that fight Draco's been giving me evil eyes.
I crumbled the note up and squeezed it in my hand. I was completely fuming. I knew exactly where Draco was sitting. In the back corner of the class.
I shot up from my chair and marched over to him. The teacher said something along the lines of "Greendale, sit down right this instant." But I didn't even care to listen.
His blond hair was combed back, and a large smirk rested on my lips. I arrived at his desk and grabbed the collar of his shirt with my fingers, a look of pure rage painted on my face.
I was tired of being treated so awfully, especially when it comes from someone as pitiful as Malfoy. I slammed his head into the wall, which was only two or so inches away, so it wouldn't of hurt too badly.
I heard the teacher yell something so I knew time was short. "Don't do something you'll regret, Malfoy. I have an army on my side." I said through gritted teeth.
There was nothing visible in his eyes, but I could tell from his short breaths that his heart was racing. He was scared, perhaps, but I would be too, considering just how crazy I assumed myself to look in that moment.
Professor McGonagall's hands grabbed my shoulders and pulled me back, causing my fingers to slip from Draco's robe. I kept my eyes on him until she pulled me out of the classroom.
"What in the world was that?" He said with shocked eyes. I wasn't sure how to answer. It's not like I could tell her I've been sleeping with guys at school, let alone Tom, who's older than me.
"Just some unfinished business." I replied quickly. It was the best answer I could think of in limited time. She turned her head to the side, confused.
"Do not bring unfinished business to my class." She said. "I understand Draco can be... Particularly annoying, but do not ever do that in my class again." She said firmly.
I nodded in response. "Now I won't send you to the office because you didn't physically hurt him, but next time you will be going to the office." She said with a calm voice.
"I understand." I said quietly. She extended her hand toward the door and I walked back inside.
The entire class turned their heads to look at me, which didn't come as a surprise. They all probably knew I was sleeping around the school, and the fact that I had just threatened Draco probably didn't help my case either.
Professor McGonagall appeared back in the class and continued the lesson like nothing happened, which I was grateful for.
The rest of the class went by slowly. The moment the bell rang I grabbed my things and practically sprinted out of the classroom. The hallways were flooded with students.
As I walked to my next class, Charms, I noticed how quite a few of the students were giving me glares. As I passed a group of three girls, two Slytherins and a Gryffindor, I heard a credibly loud whisper from one of them.
"I wonder if she'll tell us how good the twins are in bed." The blonde one said as she casted a look at me.
Back when I was younger I went to therapy to control my anger, my breathing, but in that moment I went off the charts.
I walked over to the group of girls, with not a single thought other than anger in my mind. "Oh look, here comes the Riddle slut." The brunette said with a cocky smile.
I grabbed the blonde girl by her arm and tightened my fingers around her wrist. "At least they want me. I can't say the same for you, blondie." I said with a cocky voice. She tried to pry off my fingers but my grasp was too tight.
"Today has been a pretty awful day already, but I think breaking a wrist might just be the release I needed." I said sarcastically. Though I thought my tone was pretty jokingly, the girls didn't seem to think so.
I released my hand and turned away, walking back toward Charms class, which I'd likely be late for, considering the fact that of course some pesty group of girls decided to ruin my schedule.
Thankfully my classmates in Charms didn't seem to know about the whole thing between the Riddle's and I, which made the class somewhat tolerable.
Even Flying Lessons, my last class of the day went by well. I could tell some of them knew, but none of the students bothered to say anything, thankfully. Because at that point I probably would've lost all control.
I was putting away my broomstick when a familiar and absolutely dreaded figure caught my attention. Zachary.
Most of my classmates had already left the area we were practicing in, so I was glad about that. Zachary's face was unreadable, as per usual, but based on his walking I could tell he was angered.
"You weren't in your dorm last night." Zachary said calmly as he stood in front of me. About two feet separated us from one another. Of course he came here to talk about my whereabouts.
"So what?" I said with a raise of an eyebrow. He wasn't in any position to try and control me like he does. I am so sick and tired of Zachary treating me like a lost puppy.
"So you snuck off with Nicholas." He replied firmly. I let out a heavy sigh. I was not in the mood to argue again, especially not when the entire school only sees me as the girl who sleeps around with guys.
"Actually I didn't." I said. Anger began seeping through my words. "I was about to jump off the astronomy tower. I was about to take my own life, but he saved me in time." I said quickly, raising my voice at him, but not making it loud enough for those around to hear.
"But of course you don't care, you just want me to be with you, probably so you can just put a ring on my finger." I said loudly. I could see the regret in his eyes, for even bringing it up, but I wasn't done.
"Oh yeah, and everyone in the fucking school is calling me a slut. I almost had to snap a girls wrist because she said something I didn't like." I continued.
"But of course, like I said, you don't give a shit. Of course you don't. Does anyone, for that matter?" I said finally. I turned and began walking back toward the school. I had to leave that moment before I said something regretful.
As I began walking Zachary's hand grabbed onto my wrist. That pushed me over the edge. I turned around so fast I barely even processed what had happened in that moment.
He stated at me for a moment, fear in his eyes, which confused me. "Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked loudly. Zachary is never scared. And he's especially not scared because of anything I could do.
"Your eyes.." He said quietly. I knitted my eyebrows together and pulled my hand away from his wrist. What was he talking about?
I walked toward the small fountain in the courtyard and peered down at my reflection. My eyes had changed.
Instead of being the grey-blue they usually are, they were a red-golden color. I was utterly shocked. My eyes had just changed, and not in a good way. They looked like they had been set on fire; from oceans to flames.
I stared at my reflection in confusion. My eyes were widened. "Holy shit." Zachary said from behind me. I turned back toward him. What was happening now? Had I grown a tail of something?
He was staring at me with wide eyes. This is probably the most terrified I had even seen a Riddle. I looked down at my feet for just a split second, I was just passing my gaze, but what I saw stopped me in my tracks.
My feet had flames wrapping around them. I was on fire. Or was I? I couldn't feel anything, so I couldn't have been. Was it an optical illusion? Was I being pranked?
A small crowd of students had gathered, probably just to make fun of me more now that somehow my eyes and legs had turned into flames that seemed out of control.
I was so scared I didn't even move, I just closed my eyes and hoped it would stop. I never wanted this to happen, I never wanted any of this to happen.
When I looked back down again my torso had also been consumed by the flames. It was only growing, consuming more and more of my body. The flames were so deep you could barely even see my body beneath it.
When I looked back up Dumbledore was running toward me. He looked frantic; scared. That's never a good face to see on your headmaster.
Zachary yelled something, but I was too petrified to hear anything. Nicholas fought through the crowd of students, which seemed to make up at least one forth of the student body.
He was sprinting toward me, and Zachary stood beside me yelling something. Dumbledore grabbed my arm and Nicholas grabbed my other. They led me back inside, and Zachary walked in front of us, pushing students out of the way.
I couldn't hear anything, I couldn't smell anything, and I could barley see. We arrived in Dumbledore's office and he slammed the doors shut behind us.
Nicholas and Zachary paced around the room as Dumbledore walked over to a shelf arranged with books, herbs, and potions. I stood in the middle of the room, unable to do anything.
Dumbledore grabbed a bottle with black liquid swirling inside. He paced back over to me and put the bottle up to my mouth. I parted my lips the best I could, which truly wasn't much.
He poured a few drops into my mouth, which in a few moments allowed me to gain my senses completely back again. I took in a gasp of air and looked around the room, panting.
"What just happened to me?" I said immediately. Nicholas and Zachary exchanged a look, which only made my fear worsen. Dumbledore guided me over to his desk and sat my in the chair across from his.
I sat down with shaking hands and fear in my eyes.
"Anastasia," he said firmly, eyes locked onto mine. I waited for him to say something, anything. I needed an explanation for what just happened to me.
"You are not who I thought you to be." He said in a lower voice. Well that can't be good.
"You parents, Aurora and Micheal Greendale are only your guardians, not your parents." He said quietly.
My heart must've dropped into the pits of my stomach because I felt like my heartbeat no longer existed. I was in such deep shock that I didn't even feel tears trying to escape my eyes.
"I know this must be difficult to hear, but I do know who your parents are." He said in a louder voice. I kept my eyes on the desk. I wasn't able to look at him, not when I had just been told by my school headmaster that my parents aren't actually my parents.
"Amelia and Alfred Ignis are your parents, Anastasia." He said in a stricken voice. I didn't even know what that meant. He said it like it was some groundbreaking development, but I had no idea what he was talking about.
"Do you know what makes the Ignis line extremely rare? So rare that they haven't been seen in a thousand years?" He asked in a calmer voice. I didn't know. I didn't know anything.
"What makes the Ignis rare is something only produced in your family. In a single moment of rage mixed with sadness the emotions you feel become so much that something happens." He started.
"When you reach your final breaking point, your eyes will be encased with flames, making it hard to do anything but see. And a few moments after that your body will also begin producing flames." He continued.
"The reason that happens to you is because you are not completely human, Anastasia." This caught my attention. My eyes snapped up to meet his. I couldn't even think straight. Between my parents and not being human I couldn't even begin to comprehend what he was going to say next.
"You're a Phoenix, Anastasia."
