You tugged at the sleeve of your jacket, thumbs nervously tapping as you followed the Doctor out of the TARDIS and into the crisp air of some planet or other that he'd yet to tell you the name of.
The sky was bright blue, not a cloud in sight, but the wintery air made you regret not wearing a thicker coat, "You could've warned me it'd be this cold, Doctor."
He turned, honey eyes scanning your frame as he shrugged off his long coat and pulled it over your shivering shoulders. The way his thumb grazed your collarbone only sent further shivers down your spine, but you smiled up at him nonetheless, reeling from the close contact.
"Sorry, Y/N... not the climate I expected. Wrong season, I must've gotten a little mixed up," he curled his arm so that it was linked with yours and you grinned, "It's absolutely beautiful, though."
"I hoped you'd think so."
You leaned in a little to his shoulder, "Tell me about this place, then."
He nodded, leading you further into the increasing greenery of the forest, which was blanketed in a thin layer of snow. Looking up, you felt his grip tighten on you just a little.
"I used to visit here a lot, a long time ago. It's peaceful; not to mention so beautiful. It's quiet, there's a small population and it's very spread out, but they're the most accommodating, kind species I've ever met. I thought you deserved to see it here," he looked nervous all of a sudden, brows furrowed in concern, "I wanted to tell you something, something important. And I thought somewhere this beautiful was the perfect place for it, Y/N."
You were nervous now, staring at him doe-eyed as you pondered what it was he had to tell you. His tone made it seem positive, but you couldn't help registering the anxiety on his face and you wondered if perhaps he'd simply be trying to soften the news with his cheery tone.
You'd not seen him look quite so concerned in a while.
"What is it, Doctor? Should I be worried?"
"No, no," he chuckled, "But I hope you do take it well."
You cocked your head to the side, unlinking your arms and moving so that you'd paused just ahead of him so that he stopped walking.
"You've been travelling with me for so long, Y/N, and it's been wonderful... fantastic, even," you couldn't help the butterflies at the sound of the word he used to use so often before he regenerated, "You've watched me change, you've been with me at times I wouldn't have expected you to stay but you did, and I'm so thankful for that."
You half-smiled, staring up at him in wonder as you worried which way this conversation would go — was this his way of telling you your time with him was up and asking you to leave? Or could this be the moment you'd been waiting for for a long time?
"I've tried so hard to repress how I feel, to ignore it, because I didn't think it was fair on you; to, you know, make you feel obligated to stay. But I've fallen in love with you, Y/N, and not telling you has driven me crazier than the worst of my enemies," he clasped your hand in his, rubbing it soothingly as he awaited your response.
You gulped, unsure what to say for a moment as you took in all that he'd just said.
He loved you? Of course he couldn't love you, you thought, you were just a person he took travelling because he got lonely and you were curious about the universe!
"You love me?"
"How could I not, Y/N?"
"I don't— I don't understand."
"I'm in love with you."
"But— so— you brought me here, you brought me somewhere this incredible and— and you're telling me you love me?"
"It's really not that complicated, Y/N."
You clasped your free hand over your mouth, his words washing over you head-to-toe, finally sinking in enough to ignite furious butterflies in your stomach.
"You seem... surprised? Disappointed?" the Doctor stepped back a little, not far, but enough to analyse your emotions further.
You shook your head, "I just don't believe it. I've been in love with you for this long and you actually feel the same? But... why?"
The Doctor scoffed. He stepped closer again, scooping you closer, his hands falling on your hipbones beneath his coat which seemed to be drowning your frame in that moment.
"You're incredible, Y/N... Bloody incredible. I'm not good with feelings, with emotions, but I couldn't keep it from you anymore. I love you, I do." he kissed your forehead, your cheeks burning under the heat of his soft lips.
You leaned up as he pulled away, kissing him softly as though in fear of rejection, despite all that he had just declared.
"I love you too, Doctor. So much. I can't believe you— you actually feel the same." your voice came out more like you were posing a question, still failing to comprehend that your feelings truly were reciprocated.
The Doctor beamed, that bright toothy grin that almost resembled a smirk that you adored so dearly.
He jutted out his lip proudly, spinning you around to his side again and intertwining your hands, "We've got a whole universe to explore together, Y/N. Care to join me?"
"Of course, spaceman."
"Well then, allons-y!"
