96.
The next day, a group of us stood in the animal clinic, listening to a voicemail. Last night, Lydia had led Scott and Malia out to the woods, and what they had found sounded horrible. Six bodies...and one had no face, just like the one Mason, Corey, Liam and I had found that night at the school. Our best guess was that whoever that body belonged to, was the Anuk-ite's second face.
As I listened to the voice on the other end of the phone, I felt sick to my stomach. Whoever this woman was, she sounded worried, scared. She begged the owner of the phone to call her, to let her know they were okay. It was unlikely that that would ever happen.
But as the voice continued, something else struck inside of me, and that something else was recognition...I recognized the voice.
"Remember," the woman finished, "It's my pack too."
Scott pushed himself up off the wall, moving to flip the top of the phone closed as the message ended.
Theo turned from where he had been staring out of the front door. "You pulled this off one of the bodies in the woods?" he questioned.
"Malia did." I answered, my brain still trying to figure out how I knew the voice.
"Yeah," my brother confirmed, "There were six bodies, and one of them had no face."
I shuddered at the thought, the image of the first body we found popping into my head. The memory still haunted me.
"Okay," Theo breathed, moving closer to the group of us, "The one with no face, do yo think that's the woman on the phone?"
Scott shook his head, holding up the phone slightly, "Maybe."
Mason, who was luckily discharged from the hospital, spoke up for the first time. "It's the same thing that happened to Aaron." he pointed out. "It took over his body, basically stole his face and his DNA. So that means whoever this woman is, she could be the other half of the Anuk-ite."
Everyone shared weary looks. What Mason was saying made us all uneasy. If the other half of the Anuk-ite was out there, it meant that for every minute we were unsure of its identity, it could be closer to finding its other half.
"That means she's just half of the problem." Theo announced, "The other half we already know about, Aaron."
Liam stood up from where he had been sitting on the bench, "We don't know where he is though." he argued.
"Hold on," Theo declared, "Aren't we supposed to keep both halves apart?"
I nodded, focusing my gaze on him, "Yeah, but how do we keep them apart when we don't know who the other half is."
It was Theo's turn to nod, "We know about one half," he explained, "So let's just go for that one, that's Aaron."
For once, what Theo was saying was actually agreeable. It made perfect sense.
Mason seemed to mirror my agreement. "I'm not agreeing with Theo, but I do think it'd be easier to track down Aaron over a voice on the phone."
Liam wore a small scowl, "That's agreeing with Theo." he pointed out.
Mason nodded, cringing slightly, "Yeah, but I thought I'd try to soften the blow a little."
I let out a sigh as I nodded, "I hate to say it," I admitted, "But I agree too. We should work with what we have."
Theo looked between us with a look of offence. "It's everyone completely shocked that I might actually be right?" he demanded.
"No," Liam grumbled, "We just don't like it."
I tilted my head slightly. "Hate it actually."
Theo shot me a look as my brother began speaking. "Maybe we're all right, maybe we should be looking for both, Aaron and the woman on the phone." He then looked to Mason and Theo, "I mean since you guys agree..."
Mason's face fell as he glanced at Theo, "Wait, you mean me and..."
"Him?" Theo finished, shooting Mason a dissatisfied look.
"I could go with them." I suggested, "That way Mason and I will make it two against one right?"
Theo scoffed as he looked over at me, "When are you going to realize I'm not the enemy...you do know that right?"
I shot him a skeptical look, "Right" I muttered, turning back to look at my brother and Liam who were both staring me down.
"You're not going with them." Liam argued, instantly shooting down my idea. Scott seemed to share Liam's rejection.
I let out an exasperated sigh. "Of course I'm not." I muttered.
"You're staying here." Scott announced. "You, Liam and I will try and figure out who's voice is on the phone." he explained.
Liam looked down at the phone before speaking. "If we find either half, maybe we don't have to fight at all."
Wishful thinking...but I sure hoped he was right.
"Stop the Anuk-ite," Liam started.
Scott wore a hopeful smile as he finished Liam's train of thought. "We stop the war."

After Theo and Mason had left together-much to both of their dismays- Liam, Scott and I focused on tracking down the voice from the phone. We played the message over and over again, each of us watching the phone intently as if the person was going to pop out of it.
Each and every time I heard the voice, it became more and more familiar. "I swear I've heard this voice before." I muttered, leaning forward to rest my elbows on the exam table.
"You mean like the hundred other times we've played it?" Liam questioned, looking up at me with defeat in his eyes.
I shot him a look before shaking my head, "No." I whispered, "I've heard it somewhere else."
At this point, we had given up actually listening to the message, and the phone sat closed on top of the table. Scott spun it, letting it twirl on the table for a moment before he reached out to stop it.
He sent Liam and I a tired look before he took a step away from the phone, trying to clear his head it seemed. The minute he was away from the phone, Liam reached out and picked it up, instantly dialling the number that belonged to the voicemail.
Mine and Scott's eyes grew wide, my brother reaching out for the phone. As soon as it was out of Liam's hands, Scott flipped it shut. "Do you even know what you're going to say?" he questioned.
Liam shrugged, "Hello?"
"Good start." I grumbled, pushing myself up so I was no longer leaning against the table. "We might need a bit more than that."
Scott nodded in agreement. "We might only get one shot at this." he advised. "What are you going to tell her?"
"I'm going to try and get her to meet us somewhere." Liam answered. Easier said than done.
"You're just a voice over the phone." I pointed out, "How can we be sure she'll even listen to us?"
Scott shook his head. "That might not be the best idea anyway." he contended.
Liam shook his head, "Why?" he demanded. "Then we'll know who they are."
"And they'll know who we are." Scott shot back.
Just then, the phone which was now resting in Scott's hands began to ring. My heart dropped in anticipation as the ringing fill the room.
"Answer it." Liam urged, his eyes widening at the noise.
Scott looked up at him, "You're the one who wanted to make the call, you take it." he argued, holding the phone out.
Liam looked over at me with flustered eyes. "Syd, you take it. You sound the nicest."
I looked back at him in bewilderment. "What does that have to do with anything!?" I argued, "Liam, just pick up the phone."
Liam let out a defeated sigh before taking the phone from Scott's hands. However, just as he did, the ringing ceased. We all shared curious looks as Liam flipped open the phone, instantly heading for the call log.
He redialled the number that had just called, the same number who left the voicemail. As the phone rang, all of us leaned forward, each dial tone caused more and more anxiety to bubble in my chest.
Just when I thought I couldn't handle the anticipation any more, someone on the other end picked up. "Beacon Hills High School. How may I-"
Liam slammed the phone shut, looking up at Scott and I who wore looks of shock. "It's someone at school." Liam announced.
Scott nodded, "We might know who they are."
A look of recognition slowly washed over Liam's face as he open the phone again, listening to the voicemail once more. As he did so, I let my mind run over the memory of the voice. Knowing it was someone from the school, narrowed down my options.
As if it were some kind of telepathy between the two of us, Liam and I seemed to come to the same conclusion at the same time.
"I think I know who it is." Liam proclaimed, turning back to look at Scott and I.
I nodded, meeting his eye. "Mrs. Finch."
