28.

-6 months later-

After spending most of my summer in San Francisco with my dad, I was finally back in Beacon Hills, which could be seen as both a good and bad thing. The good part was I got to see Scott, my mom and everybody else again, but the bad thing was that 'everyone else' also included Liam.

When we first broke up it was almost impossible to avoid him, I saw him everyday at school and to make matters worse he was always with Scott. Avoiding him had been the main motive behind me moving in with my dad for the summer. It wasn't that I hated Liam or didn't want to be around him, it was almost as if I couldn't. Because I knew that if I spent too much time with him I would regret breaking up with him even more than I already did. Ending our relationship was one of the hardest things I ever had to do, but I knew that if I didn't someone was going to end up getting hurt.

But now, being back home meant that I would be seeing Liam more often. That, of course, was the way things played out tonight.

When Scott had invited me to go out to the cliff overlooking the town with him and Stiles, I had happily accepted, but I wasn't so happy when we stopped to pick Liam up.

"What do you think Syd?" Scott asked, pulling me from my thoughts.

I turned my head away from the view of Beacon Hills to look at the two older boys. "About what?" I questioned.

Scott grinned from where he sat atop the Jeep, "Colleges."

I shrugged and pushed myself up from where I was leaning against the vehicle, looking to him and Stiles, "Just somewhere not too far."

Their senior year was approaching, meaning the two of them, along with the girls were planning for their future. I broke my heart to know that they would be leaving, but I knew I needed to cherish what time we had left together

Scott gave me a small smile before looking up at the full moon which illuminated the dark sky.

"You starting to feel it?" Stiles asked, noticing the look on Scott's face.

My brother shook his head, keeping his eyes on the view, "No, just thinking."

"About?" Stiles prodded.

Scott finally turned to look at his best friend, letting out a sigh, "Senior year." he admitted.

"Senior year?" Stiles echoed,  "Come on that's nothing. That's easy!"

"It's more like something Deaton told me once." Scott explained, sitting up. "You ever hear of regression to the mean?"

Stiles shook his head, "No I don't think so."

Scott looked to me briefly, and when I shared Stiles' reaction, he began to explain it, "It's basically his was of saying life can never be all bad or all good, eventually all things have to come back to the middle. So think about the last few months, things have been good right, but not amazing."

"Yeah but no one has tried to kill us in 6 months." I pointed out.

"Right. It's been pretty much in the middle for a while, which means at one point that scale has to tip one way or the other. Things are going to get really good again." Scott paused.

"Or really bad." Stiles said finishing Scott's sentence.

Silence settled in amongst the three of us as we digested this information. It wasn't really something I wanted to hear- that things were going to get bad, but I knew it was fully likely.

A few moments passed before Stiles spoke up, letting out a sigh as he jabbed his thumb in the direction behind us,  "You think it's been long enough?" he wondered.

"Yes!"

We all turned to look at Liam who was currently chained to a tree, a cautionary task for the full moon.

"Hey, we're trying to have an adult conversation here!" Stiles shot back, rolling his eyes.

"Alright you're two years older than me, Sydney is the same age as me and I'm fine! Just let me go." Liam argued.

The two eldest boys shared a look before making their way over to where Liam was being held, beginning to unchain him.

"It's not that we don't trust you-" Scott began.

"-I don't trust you." Stiles interjected.

"-It's just after the last full moon." Scott continued, ignoring Stiles.

"It was one slip up." Liam defended.

"Slip up?" Stiles questioned. "A dozen calls to the Sheriff's department about a monstrous dog boy running around the streets of Beacon Hills... naked."

I stifled laugh, remembering the night Scott called to tell me what happened. Apparently Liam's control was waning, and my brother just loved to blame me for it.  Liam's eyes briefly met mine, both of us silent as we locked eyes.

"Why were you naked?" Scott questioned, pulling Liam's eyes away from me.

"It was really hot out that night, okay?" Liam defended,  "Let me go."

"You sure you're okay?" Scott ensured.

Liam nodded, "It won't happen again."

"You're in complete and total control?"

"Yeah." Liam breathed,  "Complete and total."

I sighed and looked out over the town as Scott began to take off Liam's chains. I smiled slightly looking at all the lights that filled the town. It was good to be home.

"You ready little one?" Stiles asked from behind me as the boys approached the Jeep, Liam in tow.

I rolled my eyes. "I'm not little Stiles." I muttered, pulling myself into the backseat.

Stiles grinned, "You are to me little one."

I resisted the urge to punch him, but instead I let out a deep breath and did up my seat belt. Stiles jumped into the front seat before turning to look back at me smirking, giving me a wink.

----

I awkwardly sat beside Liam as we drove down the road. An awkward silence filled the air, so I was almost thankful when the Jeep began to slow down, making a noise that didn't sound too good.

"We outta gas?" Liam asked leaning forward.

"No it's electrical." Stiles sighed hitting his hand against the steering wheel.

I let out a small sigh as both Scott and Stiles exited the Jeep, leaving Liam and I alone. I cursed myself for being grateful only moments earlier at the Jeep breaking down. I was hoping that only Stiles would have gotten out, ensuring my brother could act as a buffer between Liam and I. Looks like luck was not on my side.

"You cut your hair." Liam commented, his eyes studying me.

I nodded, picking up the ends of my hair to look at them, "Yeah," I murmured, "It was too long."

He nodded, and once again the uncomfortable silence filled the air.

Neither of us said anything as Liam put in his ear buds, turning away from me as he turned up his music. I wanted nothing more to reach out for him, but instead  I sat in silence, stealing glances at him out of the corner of my eye. However, in one of stolen glances toward him, my eyes caught something else.

I fully turned to Liam, watching as a lightning bolt hit the ground a little distance down the road. Both mine and Liam's eyes grew wide as we looked over at each other.

"Guys?!" Liam called, a hint of fear in his voice.

Neither of them responded and before I had a chance to yell at them, another bolt hit the road again, this time only a few meters away from us.

"Guys!" I screamed louder than Liam had the first time.

"Yeah just give us a second please!" Stiles yelled back, clearly irritated.

"Yeah, just stay in the car you two, okay?" Scott added, both of them oblivious to what was going on.

I looked to Liam before reaching forward and turning the keys in the ignition, after a couple of tried the Jeep revved to life.

I stuck my head out the window and looked at my brother and his best friend. "Can we go now?"
