"Come on Argent," Stiles muttered, the phone held to his ear as he paced back and forth, "Answer the phone."
Close to ten minutes had passed from the last time we had spoken to Chris, meaning Stiles and I were desperate to know what was going on. If Kira didn't get down here soon, Scott would be dead...for real.
I nervously chewed on my lip as an agitated sigh flew from Stile's mouth, "Argent, Why the hell aren't you answering the phone?"
Our answer came not in Argent picking up the phone, but rather him flying through the double doors, landing harshly in front of us. My eyes grew wide as I stared down at him, slowly looking up as another figure entered the room. Kate.
Chris looked up at us, his eyes pained, "Stiles, Sydney," he panted, still trying to catch his breath from the impact, "Run."
Stiles took a small step back as he reached out for me, pulling him closer to him. I kept my hand latched on his arm, terrified of what Kate was going to do. Chris had pulled himself to his feet now, moving so he was shielding me.
Kate's eyes shifted from her brother to Stiles and I, a firm look in her expression, "Stiles, take the girl and move." she snapped, her eyes locking on me for a moment. "I'm taking the body."
Stiles pushed me further behind him as he stared back at Kate, not backing down, "Why?" he challenged, "Visual confirmation?
A bitter laugh escaped her lips as she shook her head, "Don't worry handsome," she promised, "I'm not the Benefactor"
Kate took a few steps forward, causing Stiles and I to move close to where Scott was. "Then why do you want the body?" Chris demanded, his voice thick.
"I wish I could tell you." Kate announced, not a single ounce of sincerity in her voice.
The next event happened so fast I barely had time to blink. In a matter of seconds, Chris had pulled a gun, swiftly moving to hold it under the chin of his younger sister. I slowly felt myself reaching for my own gun that resided in the waistband of my jeans, hidden from sight.
Kate wore humourless smile as she shook her head slightly, "I always forget you carry two," she whispered.
Chris pressed the barrel of the gun harder into the bottom of her chin, "Back off!" He demanded.
A smirk took over Kate's expression as she looked at her brother, "You sure you can pull that trigger fast enough?" Kate teased.
"I don't want to" Chris admitted, quick, deep breaths coming from his lips. He was nervous. Nervous that he would have to kill his sister.
Quickly, I had my own gun in my hands, safety off and pointed at Kate, "But I do." I announced, my chest rising and falling quickly as I met her eyes.
Kate let out a snort of a laugh, a mocking smirk coming to her face, "Little Sydney knows how to shoot," she hummed, looking to Chris briefly, "How wonderful."
I pushed the lump in my throat down as I planted my feet, not letting my arms waver as I kept the gun pointed in her direction.
Glancing between Chris and I, "You're not going to shoot me," she snapped, and there was a good chance that she was right. But, my brother's life was on the line, so I wasn't really sure what I was capable of doing.
"We're not going to let you take his body!" Chris growled.
"Okay," Stiles announced, speaking for the first time since the guns had been drawn, "Obviously you guys have a lot to talk about." he observed, pulled me back slightly, "I saw some coffee outside, maybe a vending machine?"
I shot him a disapproving look as Chris focused his attention back on his sister, "Listen Kate," he pleaded, "We have a plan."
Kate looked back at him with dark eyes, "Well, if killing Scott is part of it, you're worse than me."
"He's telling the truth," Stiles spoke, confirming Argent's words, " We're trying to get to the Benefactor"
"If you didn't notice" Chris snapped at his sister, "You're on that list too, higher than most."
"That's why I'm here" Kate shot back through gritted teeth.
Chris had a pleading tone in his voice now, "Then back off and let us do what we planned!"
Kate's eyes traveled to the timer on Chris's wrist which read 3 minutes. 3 minutes and my brother would be dead. She looked back up at him, the anger in her eyes slightly fading.
"Just take the Berserkers and go," Chris ordered, "Kate, please. We have a plan"
In a move I never expected, Kate took a step back, nodding in understanding, "Okay." she succeeded, her voice dropping.
We all watched in shock as she just turned and left, not saying a single word. Chris instantly lowered his gun, but mine stayed aimed at the door, my hands shaking in fear.
"It's okay, Syd," Stiles promised softly, lightly placing a hand on my back, "You can put the gun down now."
I looked over at him, quickly nodding as I placed the safety back on the gun before I turned to Chris. Stiles watched me with curious eyes and I outstretched my hand containing the gun, "I don't want this anymore." I announced, letting out a shaky breath.
Chris looked between the gun and my face, slightly confused, "Allison told me you were scared to be alone, she wanted you to have that." he explained.
I nodded, "I know, but I don't think I need it anymore, at least not right now."
Chris gave me a small smile before taking the gun, slipping it into the back of his pants. It almost felt like a weight had been lifted off my chest.
Seconds after I had stepped back from Argent, Kira came flying through the door, her breath heavy as she rushed toward us. I looked behind her, desperate to see someone else, "Where's Liam?" I demanded, my voice rising in worry.
Kira looked over to me as Stiles opened the door of the cooler, beginning to pull Scott's body out. "He's okay," she promised, giving me a small smile.
"We need to hurry," Chris announced, nodding toward my brother's body. Kira nodded as she stepped toward Scott, placing her hand over his chest just as she he done earlier tonight. Seconds passed before electricity was once again flowing through his body, this time bringing him back.
Suddenly, my brother's eyes shot open as he inhaled sharply, his body arching as he breathed for the first time in almost an hour. I felt myself relax as I looked down at my brother. He was okay.
Scott's eyes darted around, looking at each of us, "Did it work?" he questioned, his voice full of hope.
Nervous glances were sent around the room, none of us wanting to break the news to him that he had almost died for no reason.
But it turned out none of us had the chance to answer him as Liam came bursting into the room. I felt myself fully relax this time, knowing they were both okay. But while Liam and my brother were unscathed, not everyone else was.
Liam looked to Kira, his face a mixture of pain and sympathy.
Kira stared back at him, "What?" she demanded.
"It's your mother," he announced, "She's...hurt."
---
After all was said and done, I stood near the front desk of the hospital, waiting for my mom to finish up so we could go home. It had been a long night for everyone. My eyes travelled through the halls, taking in the damage that had been done my Kate and the Berserkers...Kira's mom had almost died because of them.
I was startled from my thoughts when a voice spoke from behind me, "Hey." I spun around, my eyes meeting with Liam's who gave me a small smile.
A smile spread onto my face, happy to see him after this crazy night, "Hey." I greeted, watching as he studied my face.
"You okay?" he asked, likely referring to the emotional trauma I had had to endure in the span of a single evening.
I nodded, feeling my heart speed up at the way he was looking at me, "I'll be okay." I promised, pausing for a moment before I spoke again, "Are you?"
I wasn't entirely sure what had happened on the roof, but I had a feeling that it wasn't anything pretty, especially if the Berserkers were involved. Liam didn't get to answer my question, and he didn't really have to, as a car alarm began to blare outside. I watched as he jumped, his finger nails being replaced by claws,. "Liam," I whispered softly, pulling his attention back to me, "It's okay."
He let out a breath as he relaxed, letting the claws disappear, "Sorry," he mumbled, his face flushing, "I'm just a little on edge."
I gave him a warm smile, "It's okay." I promised.
"Ready, Syd?" My mom asked, arriving beside me with Scott at her side. Ninety percent of the hospital staff stared at us in disbelief over the fact that my brother had been dead an hour ago, and now he was one hundred percent alive.
I ignored the stares, turning back to Liam, "I'll see you at school." I smiled, giving him a small wave.
Liam nodded, a grin coming to his face, "See you later, Syd."
As I fell into step with my mom, she turned back to look at Liam quickly before turning back to me with a knowing look, "Do you maybe have a little crush on Liam?" she teased, causing Scott to stifle a laugh.
My face reddened as I looked over at her, praying Liam wasn't listen to us, "Mom!" I snapped through gritted teeth.
She let out a laugh as we made our way to the car, her hands flying up in defense, "Sorry, sorry."
