09.

A yawn escaped my lips as I leaned further into the chair that was set outside of one of the offices in the police station.

My brother looked over at me from where he was leaning against one of the desks, a small grin playing on his lips as he spoke, "You tired?"

I let out a small laugh, nodding as my phone dinged in my pocket, "Yeah."  I answered, reaching to retrieve it.

Scott watched me before he glanced back to where our dad was. After the incident at the school, he had taken us back to the station with him while he filled out some paper work, "Well don't worry," he ensured, "Dad should be-"

He cut himself off, his eyes locking on the office our dad was currently in. He didn't move for a moment, and it appeared that he was listening to whatever our dad was saying behind that door.

I sat up in the chair as I looked toward the office, "What's wrong?" I inquired, my eyes moving to meet Scott's.

My brother shook his head, tearing his eyes away from the office, "Nothing," he answered, giving his head a small shake before he looked down at my phone, "Who are you texting?"

I glanced down at my phone for a moment before looking back up, "Liam," I sighed, fumbling with my phone in hand, "He wanted an update on everything going on."

Scott nodded slightly, "You told him?" he questioned, his look becoming suspicious.

"He was with me when I got the call from mom," I explained, watching as my brother's face darkened ever so slightly, "I told him to go home."

My brother watched me with firm eyes, "I thought I asked you to just play it safe with him for now, at least for a little while."

I met my brother's glare, not backing down, "I'm not scared of Liam," I argued softly. And it was true, being with him didn't elicit fear, but rather something else.

Scott shook his head, ready to say something else, but I cut in first, "I know," I revealed, "About his past. But he doesn't seem like the same kid he was at his old school, he doesn't even seem like the same kid as when you first bit him."

"I want to protect you," Scott explained, "Both of you." he looked up at me, his eyes sad,  I'm just afraid that if-"

He didn't get to finish whatever he wanted to say, as the door to the office swung open, revealing my dad who gave us both small smiles. "Thanks for waiting," he breathed, "I know it's late."

Scott pushed himself off the desk, and I followed suit, standing up and following after him as he approached our father. "It's okay," Scott promised, "It's not like we'll be going to school tomorrow anyway."

My dad gave Scott a small nod before letting out a sigh, "Well unfortunately," he began, and I knew whatever he said next wasn't going to be good news. "It looks like I have to drive back to San Francisco tonight," he explained, "I need to do a review with the field office, but I'll be back as soon as I can." my dad paused for a moment, his eyes meeting Scott's, "I might have to miss the first game of the season."

I couldn't see Scott's face from where I was standing, but I could only picture the look of disappointment on his face.

Being the people pleaser that he was, Scott brushed it off, "It's no big deal." he ensured, but we all knew it was.

My dad shook his head, "Well it is to me," he admitted, "I'm keeping my promises this time." I gave him a small smile as he looked back to me.

It was silent for a moment as my dad readjusted the bag in his hand which contained a gun, the gun I had heard fired inside the school earlier tonight. Scott and I both glanced toward it, curiosity in our eyes.

My dad noticed out stares, looking down at the bag before back to us. "Syd, come here," he said softly, beckoning me toward him and Scott. I took a few step closer, arriving at the side of my brother.

"What I did," my dad started, looking in between the two of us, "It was necessary, justifiable...you know that right?"

Scott met his eye, "Have you..." he trailed off, seemingly not wanting to speak the words.

My dad seemed to understand what he was trying to say, as a small sight flew from his lips, "Two other times," he answered, "It's not easy taking a man's life...even if someone forces you to do it."

"How do you deal with it" Scott asked quietly, and I had a feeling he was no longer asking to learn about our dad's job, but was asking for his own peace of mind.

"You look at it logically, without emotion," my dad explained, glancing between my brother and I.

Scott pressed on, "How do you do that?"

"I used to do it by drinking," My dad confessed, letting out a forced laugh. I almost felt myself outwardly wince at the mention of his previous drinking habits, they had caused nothing but pain for our entire family.

My dad's face fell slightly, "Come here you two," he ordered, softly pulling Scott and I into a hug. We had hugged each other more in this single night than we had for the past five years.

"One more thing," he said pulling back to look at Scott, "When I do come back, we need to talk about some stuff." he announced, "You and your friends-and your little sister" he added looking over at me. "The way you guys handle things, it doesn't seem to phase you like it should. It's like you guys know something I don't. " I could almost feel myself pale as he continued speaking. "When I get back, I'd like to be in the know" he said giving us both warning looks.

Scott looked over at me with wide eyes, and I did my best to regain my composure, "Okay, dad" I promised, giving him a forced smile.

His attention turned to me, "And you Miss Sydney," he started, wrapping his arm around me as we walked toward the door, his other arm around Scott,  "Your mother is going to kill you when she find out you were at the school."

"Well dad," I mused, looking over to him with a smile, "That's why she's not going to find out." I joked as we walked outside.

----

I hate this plan. I hate this plan. I hate this plan.

I paced the length of the room, nervously chewing on my fingernails as I went.

Scott, Kira, Stiles and Liam were downstairs, figuring out the final logistics of our plan. Basically, we were going to lure the Benefactor in. We had learned from both the tape in Garrett's bag, and what the man who had caused the virus, and threatened Stiles' life, had said-visual confirmation was require.

Therefore, our plan was to request a wire transfer from the Benefactor, without providing visual confirmation of a death. That would mean that someone, we weren't entirely sure who,  would have to come to the hospital to ensure the deed had been done.

We were pretty confident that someone would come to confirm a death had taken place, especially if the deceased was someone high on the list. Lucky, or not so lucky, for us, Scott was the highest.

So, we were going to stage his death.

Stiles was working on a way to get into the hospital's security system, and once that was done we would be able to watch, from all angles, as whoever was behind this list came to claim their biggest prize-my brother.

I knew we needed to do this, but at the same time I knew this plan was absolutely insane. So much could go wrong, my brother could actually die.

"Hey," Liam said, popping his head into my room, pulling me from my thoughts, "We're going to get started soon," he explained, nodding toward Scott's room, "Mrs. Yukimura is on her way."

I gave him a small nod as I let out a shaky breath, my eyes falling down to my hands which were basically trembling at my sides. Liam seemed to notice, as he looked to me with sad eyes.

I forced a smile onto my face, shoving my hands into the pocket of my hoodie as I made my way toward him, "I'm ready." I promised.

As I attempted to walk by him into Scott's room, he reached out, lightly grabbing my arm, "Syd-" he breathed.

Before I had a chance to reply, the rest of the group came bounding up the stairs, Stiles going over the plan once again as Scott and Kira nodded their heads.

"Let's go, you two." He called as he ran past Liam and I.

I gave Liam a quick glance before lightly pulling my arm out of his grasp, following the rest of the group into Scott's bedroom.

Scott and Kira sat on the bed, while Stiles marched back and forth, likely running the plan through his head. "My mom's almost here." Kira announced.

"So let me make sure I have this right," I began as Liam entered the room, stopping beside me, "You're going to stop his heart?"

Kira nodded, "Well, not entirely." she clarified,  "We're going to stop it enough so that none of the monitors pick it up."

I let out a shaky breath as I nodded, "And then you'll bring him back?" I questioned, my voice cracking slightly.

Scott gave me a concerned look from the bed, "It'll be okay," he promised, "I'll be okay."

The sound of the front door closing hindered me from answering Scott- it was go time.

Soon enough, Mrs. Yukimura had joined us in Scott's room. She stood to the side of his bed as Scott laid on his back, Kira on the other side.

Stiles, who had just finished a phone call, looked up, his eyes landing on me, "Are you sure you're going to be okay here by yourself?" he questioned, asking the same questioned I had been asked all night.

I nodded, my eyes landing on my brother, "I'll be fine." I assured, but my voice alluded to my fear.

Liam glanced at me from where he stood, "You look nervous."

"So do you." I replied, raising an eyebrow.

He didn't say anything, but instead began to pace back and forth, as Stiles made for the door. "I've got to go," he announced, "Please be careful." he ordered, sending Scott a pleading look before exiting.

Liam now spoke up, his voice wavering in fear, "Are you guys sure about this?" he asked, his eyes stopping on the trio by the bed.

"We're sure there's no other way to do this?" I confirmed, supporting Liam's worries.

Kira quickly looked over at us before looking back at Scott, "I think your sister and Liam are a little bit nervous." she mumbled, her own voice shaky, "Maybe you should tell them it's going to be okay."

Scott looked to Kira, very well knowing that it wasn't only Liam and I who were scared, "It's going to be alright" Scott promised, reaching up to take Kira's hand.

Liam didn't seem convinced, "You've done something like this before right?" he questioned, directing his attention to Mrs. Yukimura.

"No," she admitted, her voice stronger than the rest of ours at the moment, "But I've seen it done."

"That's just as good, right?" I asked, my nervous eyes meeting hers.

She did not give me the answer I wanted-needed to hear, "No," she answered, shaking her head slightly.

"Mom!" Kira snapped, looking to her mother with angry eyes,  "You're making them more nervous"

"Good." Mrs. Yukimura snapped, "This is a horrible plan...they should be scared."

I turned to Liam, both of our eyes widening. This was definitely not getting an easier to get on board with.

"You don't have to help, we can do it without you" Kira shot back

Mrs. Yukimura just shook her head, clearly knowing that if we were going to go through with this plan, it was better that she was in on it.

"Okay then, " Kira breathed, everything now in order for them to begin, "You ready?"

It was now Scott's turn to express his nerves, "Wait!" he exclaimed, sitting up before anything could be done.

He looked between Kira and Mrs. Yukimura, "Am I going to feel anything?" he questioned ".... While I'm out?"

Mrs Yukimura shook her head slightly, "It'll probably feel like you're dreaming." She answered.

Scott let out a small breath, "Good dreams or bad?"

"I guess it depends on you," She answered, giving him the slightest of smiles.

My brother met my gaze quickly before he laid back down, a deep sigh coming from his lips, "I'm ready" he whispered.

I bit down on the inside of my cheek as Kira hovered her hand over Scott's chest for a moment before lightly placing it over his heart. I felt like I was going to be sick as the sound of electricity filled the air.

I clamped my eyes shut as visible currents of electricity could be seen travelling into my brother's heart. As he let out a loud gasp, attempting to catch his breath, I felt myself spin around, trying to block out everything happened behind me.

I felt a hand on my shoulder, Liam coming to stand behind me, "It's okay." He promised, lightly giving my shoulder a squeeze.

I pulled myself together before turning back around, watching as Mrs. Yukimura motioned toward the door, "We need to go," she explained, looking between Liam and Kira, "Now."

The two tore their eyes away from Scott, while mine remained locked on my older brother. He truly looked dead.

"Sydney," Mrs. Yukimura called, grabbing my attention, "Call 911 and get an ambulance here, right away."

I nodded quickly, pulling my phone out of my pocket, fumbling to dial the number. I brought the phone to my ear, watching as the other three filed from the room, Liam giving me a final glance before he went.

As the operator picked up the phone, I put on the best performance I could, "My brother," I cried into the phone, my eyes locked on Scott, "I think he's dead."
