06.
I stood at my locker at the end of the day with Sophia by my side. The two of us were in mid-discussion on our plans for attending the lacrosse game tonight, "So I was thinking...". I trailed off, my eyes catching on Liam who was currently marching out of the school doors, Mason running after him.
"Syd?" Sophia asked giving me a strange look, turning her head slightly to see what had caused me to stop talking.
I kept my eyes locked on where Liam had just been, "I'll be right back" I muttered, already following after the two boys.
I could hear Sophia close my locker shut as she began running after me, "Sydney!"
Pushing through the exterior doors, I ended up outside by the parking lot. A small crowd had gathered as the opposing lacrosse team began to file off of their bus.
"Liam!" Mason called, trying to will his best friend to stop whatever was about to happen, "No, no, no." he warned. But Liam didn't listen.
He came to a stop, his eyes landing on one of the players who had just exited the bus, "Brett!" he called.
I looked to Mason, my eyes wide in curiosity, "What's going on?" I whispered, afraid something really bad was going to occur.
Mason looked over to me, worry evident on his face, "It's Liam's old school," he explained, then nodding toward the boy by the name of Brett, "And he, is one of his old teammates."
I looked back to the scene unfolding as the boy looked over at Liam, the two of them breaking into a stare down for a few moments. Each of their facial expressions were hard, Liam's jaw clenched as he glared at Brett.
It was Liam who spoke first, "I just wanted to say" he breathed through gritted teeth, "have a good game." The latter part of his sentence came out more calmly, and I was relieved to see that as he stuck out his hand to shake Brett's, there were no claws.
Brett stared at Liam's hand for a moment before he and the other guys behind broke out into a fit of laughter. I bit down on my cheek, resisting the urge to speak up. Suddenly, I hated this guy.
"That's cute Liam," Brett teased, "Is that what they told you to say in anger management, apologize and everything's fine" He laughed, but it lacked any humour, "You demolished coach's car" Brett, dropping his voice as he stepped forward.
"I paid for it" Liam snapped, clearly becoming flustered with the amount of attention this little altercation was gathering from people passing by.
"Yeah you're going to pay for it," Brett warned, "We're going to break you in half out there, and it's going to be all your fault."
"Hey!" I snapped, earning surprised looks from both Mason and Sophia as I took a step forward, "Leave him alone." I warned, my voice dropping.
Brett smirked as he took a step toward me, "Got yourself a girlfriend, Liam?" he mocked. "Does she know...about your little problem?" he taunted.
I was ready to walk up and sock that guy in the face as Liam clenched his hand into a fist, hard enough for blood to start dripping from his hand.
Luckily, Scott and Stiles came rushing out of the school, Scott grabbing Liam and pulling him back as Stiles stepped forward, "Hey, what's going on prep students? Welcome to our little public high school, how you doing?" he greeted, sticking out his hand to introduce himself, "Stiles."
When Brett didn't take it, he pulled it back awkwardly before speaking again, "That's a firm handshake you got there. Uh we're very excited for the scrimmage tonight but let's keep it clean, no rough stuff out there"
Brett look at him quizzically as Stiles ran back to Scott and Liam. "Go!" Stiles yelled, pulling Scott and Liam along with him.
I watched as they disappeared into the school before I turned back to Brett and the rest of the Devenford Prep kids.
"Syd, don't" Sophia pleaded, reaching out to grab my arm.
I pulled away from her grasp, "Brett right?" I called as I made my way toward him, stopping in front of him, I was forced to look up at him.
He smirked, crossing his arms over his chest, "Can I help you?"
I plastered an obviously fake smile on my face as I took another step closer, "I don't know if I need to remind your preppy little ass, but this is our school and you can't come in here and talk to him like that. I don't care what he's done."
Brett laughed, causing the rest of him team to join in, "I'm supposed to take orders from you now, am I?"
I scoffed, shaking my head, "You're a prep school student, not the president of the United States." I spat, "Stop acting like you're so much better than us."
Another mocking grin covered Brett's face, "Liam needs his girlfriend sticking up for him now does he?"
I let out a bitter laugh, "Oh trust me, I'm not his girlfriend. But I wouldn't suggest messing with him," I warned, dropping my voice, "He's angry, remember?"
Brett glared at me as the rest of the players stared in shock as I turned away. I felt myself relax once they couldn't see my face. Truth be told, confronting people was not my forte, so that scared the shit out of me, "Let's go" I mumbled, grabbing Sophia and pulling her back into the school.
"Sydney wait!" I spun around to see Mason running down the hall toward us, his eyes wide, "That was cool -what you did," he announced before sighing, "Liam's been- he's just."
I nodded, feeling guilty that Mason's best friend was changing right in front of him and he didn't know why, "Brett's an ass." I muttered.
Mason laughed, "So am I going to see you at the game?" he asked, changing the topic,
I nodded. When was I ever not at a lacrosse game,
"You guys wanna sit with us?" he asked and by us I assumed he meant him and Violet.
I looked at Sophia and she nodded with a grin on her face, "Yeah," I smiled, turning back to Mason, "We'll see you there."
Once Mason was out of ear shot, Sophia turned to me with wide eyes, "Since when did you talk to Liam and Mason?"
I shrugged, "I have science with Mason," I explained, "We work together sometimes."
"And Liam?" she pushed, her eyes basically sparkling at the prospect that I could have talk to the Liam Dunbar.
"He's on the team with my brother," I explained, "That's all."
----
Later that night, I arrived at back at school, ready to watch what ever was about to go down in this game.
"Syd! Over here" I heard Sophia yell as I looked around the stands.I looked around for a moment, soon spotting her standing with Liam and Mason.
"Great" I grumbled under my breath as I walked over to them.
"Sydney! Hey." Mason smiled upon my arrival. I stopped next to Sophia, giving Mason a smile of greeting
Liam, who was in the middle of staring at Brett barely seemed to notice that I had arrived, "I don't care if he's a foot taller than me, I think I can take him" Liam said trying to convince himself.
"Yeah" Mason aimlessly agreed, too distracted by the scene of Brett changing his shirt across the field.
Liam noticed the distraction in his best friend's voice and spun around, "What do you think you're doing?"
Mason eyes grew wide as he tore his attention away from Brett, "What? Me?" he questioned, "I'm agreeing with you...I'm being agreeable."
Liam cocked at eyebrow, "You think he's hot don't you?"
Mason quickly denied it, causing me to stifle a laugh, "No, no, no. No way." He muttered before shrugging slightly, "Okay fine. Maybe. Yeah, Maybe a little"
"He wants to destroy me" Liam pointed out, looking once more toward the opposing team.
"I think you can definitely take him" Mason agreed. "...And then give him to me."
"I second that" Sophia said speaking up, which caused me to shoot her a quick glare. They were basically sleeping with the enemy.
Liam looked to me as if he was expecting me to agree, "What about you?"
I let out a small laugh, "They can have him." I muttered, putting my hands up in defense which earned a a laugh from Liam.
"No," Mason said, dropping the teasing tone from his voice, "Just go out there and kick their smug prep school asses man"
Liam nodded, and with one final look at Brett, he turned and made his way over to the bench to join the rest of the team.
The minute Liam was gone, I could see Brett staring at me out of the corner of my eye. When I looked at him, he sent a wink in my direction. A scowl covered my face as I turned back to Sophia and Mason,
"Syd we're gonna go sit down, you coming?" Sophia asked, nodding toward the bleachers.
I gave her a small smile, "Yeah, I'll be there in a minute." I promised, turning back to Brett who was making his way toward me.
Once he was close enough, he spoke, "We meet again," he said, a smirk covering his face.
I rolled my eyes as I took a small step back, "Not by choice I can tell you that much" I muttered.
Brett let out a small laugh as he glanced toward our bench, "Here to watch your boyfriend get destroyed?"
I bit down on the inside of my cheek, trying to stop myself from saying something I would regret, "My brother's on the team." I explained harshly.
"Well, if you get bored, you can always come and cheer for the other team." Brett suggested, sending me a quick wink.
I rolled my eyes, "You wish."
Brett was about to say something else when someone else spoke, "Leave her alone!" a voice from behind me snapped.
Both Brett and I turned to see Liam standing behind me, an angry look on his face, "Leave Brett." he warned, his breathing getting heavy.
A teasing laugh came from Brett's lips, "I'm sorry, Liam. I was told you two weren't a thing."
"We're not," I snapped turning back to Brett, "But that doesn't mean you and I can be."
Brett left without saying another word, but I could tell Liam and I had pissed him off. As I spun around to make my way back to the bleacher, Liam reached out to stop me, "Don't let him get to you" he warned.
"It's not me that needs that advice." I reminded him, giving him a comforting smile before walking over to Sophia, Mason and Violet.
----
Minutes into the game, Devenford was already kicking our asses. All of us slumped in the bleachers as they scored...yet again.
"This is bad." I muttered, dropping my head into my hands.
My head shot up when Mason shifted beside me, "Oh no." he whispered. I followed his gaze to see Liam try to take down two guys at once. We all visibly cringed as Liam ran into them, bouncing off of them and onto the ground like they were a brick wall.
As quickly as he was on the ground, he was back onto his feet, whipping off his gloves in attempts to fight one of them-or both. Luckily, Scott and Stiles interjected before it could go any further.
The rest of the game went on about the same. Kira, who was the newest and only female member, of the team had scored, which meant we were on the board at least.
Things took a turn, however, when Liam and Brett were put on the same line. The two had been at each other's throats the entire shift, but it was one play in particular that caused the entire crowd to gasp. The two had barrelled into each other, both of them flying backwards and hitting the ground with a loud thud.
I felt my heart drop as Liam laid still for a moment, the incident reminding me of the night Scott had bit him, the night that had started this all.
To my relief, Scott and Stiles soon had him on his feet, and from what I could see he was okay. Brett on the other hand, was not. He withered on the ground in pain, letting out loud groans. My eyes then travelled to Violet who stood up, excusing herself to the washroom. I didn't pay much attention to her departure, as my brother waved me down.
I excused myself, which earned an odd look from Sophia. I could tell she was starting to get suspicious of my preoccupation with Liam and everything involving him.
"Scott," I called as I approached him. He was standing with only Kira at this point, Liam in the middle of talking to coach while Stiles stood off the field, the phone held to his ear.
Scott pulled me closer to him, ensuring no one else was listening, "It's Garrett," he whispered, "He's the one who killed Carrie, and we think he's after Liam."
I felt my heart clench at the prospect. I guess Scott was going to keep me in the loop after all, no more of that "living a normal life" crap.
I felt my eyes involuntarily shift to Garrett, who met my gaze briefly, "Why hasn't he done anything yet?" I questioned, pulling my attention back to my brother.
"He missed" Scott explained, his own eyes looking to the other player.
"He missed?" I echoed.
Scott nodded, "He didn't get Liam, and it's too late now."
At that moment, Liam rejoined us, "I just talked to coach, I'm out for the rest of the game." he announced, causing all of us to let out a sigh of relief.
Kira looked over to Scott, "What are you going to do?" she questioned.
My brother shook his head, "I don't know," He admitted, "Something's still not right...we're missing something.
It turned out he was right, and Stiles had figured out that something that we were missing, "Guys!" He called, joining the group, "I just talked to Lydia, she cracked another third of the list."
Liam looked to him with wide eyes, "Am I on it?" he blurted.
"No," Stiles answered, "But somebody else is."
"Who!" I demanded, the anticipation eating me up inside.
Stiles let out a shaky breath, "It's Brett"
"Brett?" Liam gawked, shocked at the fact that the same kid he had attempted to take down various times tonight was now in a life or death situation.
Stiles nodded as he began looking around, his eyes scanning every body on the field, "Where is he?"
Scott turned toward the building, "They must have taken him into the school!" he announced, worry dripping from his voice. "Stay here." he ordered, mostly looking to Liam and I as he turned and bolted toward the locker rooms.
A shaky breath came from my lips as I looked back to the stands, my eyes landing on where Mason and Sophia were sitting...Violet was still missing.
I felt my heart drop as I turned back to the group, my eyes wide, "It's Violet" I whispered barely audible.
"What?" Liam asked, turning to look at me in confusion.
"It's Violet," I repeated, this time louder so everyone could hear, "She has to be the one helping Garrett. They're always together, and she left the minute you and Brett got hurt." I explained, looking between Liam and Stiles.
"Where is she then?" Stiles asked, worry rising in his voice as well.
My eyes grew wide as I realized what was about to happen, "She's in the school!" I basically yelled, "Someone had to warn Scott. I'm going in there." I announced, already turning toward the school.
I felt a hand grip my arm and pull me back, "You're not going in there." Liam ordered, giving me a firm look
Nervous tears filled my eyes as I looked between him and the school, "But-"
Stiles placed his hand on my shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze, "Liam's right, Syd. I'll go."
I sighed, terrified that I could lose both my brothers if he went in there, "Just be careful." I pleaded.
Stiles nodded, and with seconds he was taking off toward the school. Kira had left at some point to call Lydia, leaving only Liam and I.
"You think you know a person" he grumbled, moving to sit down on the bleachers. I gave him a sad look as I took a seat next to him.
Liam's eyes were locked on the field as he spoke, "He was one of my only friends at this school."
"Well now you have Scott, and Stiles, and Kira, Lydia, Malia. They're all here for you now Liam," I promised, "And me, I'm your friend now too."
He turned to me, giving me a soft smile before his eyes turned sad again. I couldn't even imagine what he was going through. Less than a week ago he was bitten, turned into a werewolf. And now, the supernatural were being hunted, two of those hunters being his friends
I shifted in my seat as I kept my gaze on him, "I'm sorry this happened to you," I whispered, "All of it."
Liam clenched his jaw, not looking me in the eyes, "I deserved it." he muttered, his eyes full of regret.
I gave him a confused look as I shook my head, "Liam-
"-I got kicked out of my old school, I wrecked my coaches car." He admitted, finally turning to look at me, "Afterwards, they sent me to a psychiatrist, I was diagnosed with intermittent explosive disorder."
My eyes softened as I nodded, "IED" I whispered, vaguely remembering the term from one of my psych classes.
Liam's face flushed as he looked down to his hands, "I have no clue why I just told you all of that."
I grabbed one of his hands and gave it a quick squeeze, "Don't worry," I promised, "I'm good at keeping secrets, I've had some experience" I joked.
A small laugh came from Liam's lips before he turned back to the school, "We should go check on them." he announced.
Adrenaline filled my body as I stood up, afraid of what we would find when we entered that school, "Let's go."
Upon entering the school, we found the medic in the hallway- dead. "Come on!" Liam called, pulling me after him as we rushed toward the locker room.
"Stay behind me." He ordered quietly as the two of hovered outside the door, building up the courage to open it. But it turns out we didn't have the chance, "You can come in!" Scott called, his voice instantly causing me to relax.
Liam and I shared a look before pushing through the door, our eyes surveying the scene. Brett was alive, and both Scott and Stiles looked okay. It was a whole other story for Violet, I wasn't really sure if she was unconscious or dead.
"She's alive." Scott announced, answering my thoughts, "Sheriff's on his way."
