OLIVIA
"Heyyyy Sherbet. How're you holding up?" I asked. Sherbet Williams just lost her mother to a car accident and was acting strange... Or maybe depressed. I can't tell, that's why I'm asking.
"I'm fine," she smiled, but the smile didn't reach her eyes.
"Are you sure?" I knew her well enough to know she was lying. "You seem a little sad," I said frowning.
She sighed. "Well, if you have to know, I'm not doing so well. My mom and I used to be really close and⎯well," as she was saying this I saw a tear creep out her eye. She desperately tried to hide it, but failed. I was about to hug her but then her boyfriend came up from behind and said something like I need to talk to you. I was already walking away then, so I didn't get to hear. When I came to my house the phone rang. I picked it up.
"Hello? This is Olivia." I said wondering who it could be.
"Ollie?" Sherbet's voice called, barely audible, but loud enough so I could hear. Her voice was quiet and hoarse like she's been crying. She told me what just happened.
"Oh no! That's terrible! I'm so sorry!" I said. I truly was, I didn't even know how he could break up with her.
"I know, I know, it's not your fault. Just promise me," she said.
"Promise you what?"
"You won't leave me. Even if I turn into a monster, which is probably why they both left me." she hiccuped.
"Of course I won't! I could never." I said hurriedly. Why would she think I would leave her?
"Thanks. It's just, I don't know," she said taking a deep breath.
"I know exactly how you feel." I didn't, but I thought it would make her feel better.
"Well, thanks again, it was nice having someone to talk to."
"You're welcome. Feel free to call me whenever." I hung up, and smiled mischievously. He would never see it coming. Who am I talking about? You're about to find out.
Josh has been one of my best friends for a long time. Even before he met Sherbet. We used to be besties as kids, and went to the same schools. I really thought he was one of the good guys... until he broke up with Sherbet today. I don't blame him for breaking up with her, it's just now wasn't the best time. She's going through a lot and needs a lot of support. Breaking up with her won't solve that.
I came up to the door of his house. I needed to talk to him about his behavior lately. I was going to ring the doorbell but banged on the door just to have some fun. It opened within seconds.
Josh looked weary and tired. "Oh hey Ollie," he said giving me the most unenthusiastic wave.
"Hi. Can I come in?" I asked but in a demanding voice.
"Yeah, I wanted to talk to you." I made myself home on the couch. "So..." he fiddled with his fingers. "I kind of like you."
I didn't hesitate to bolt up and slap him. It's what I came here for in the first place. "Idiot," I breathed. And then marched away out the door. I felt triumphant and laughed as I got into my car and noticed the door still open. "You deserve it!" I shouted.
I told Sherbet everything the next day, leaving out the part where he said he liked me. She just laughed and said, "You're the best, and he's the worst." And I laughed along too.
