JOSIE PICKS HER HEAD UP. The sun-themed void transitioned, signaling morning. As Josie slept in her self-created realm, she forced herself awake in her room. Opening her eyes, she found herself back in reality, staring at the familiar ceiling. Sitting up, blood trickled down her nose, and a sigh of sadness escaped her lips. She planted her feet on the floor and walked to her bedroom door, peering through to find her mom pacing anxiously. "Mama?" Josie called out softly.
Estefina glanced at her daughter with concern. "ยกAy, mi hija! ยฟEstรกs bien? Max me explicรณ lo sucedido." She enveloped Josie in a tight embrace, providing solace as Josie cried into her chest.
TRANSLATION; Oh, my daughter! Are you okay? Max told me what happened.
Josefina stepped back from the embrace, her voice quivering with emotion. "ยกSin querer, le rompรญ la nariz a una chica! ยกEstaba tan furiosa! Perdรญ el control, tropecรฉ, y ella cayรณ, rompiรฉndose la nariz. ยกMe asustรฉ y escapรฉ!" she exclaimed, gesturing wildly with tears streaming down her cheeks.
TRANSLATION; I broke a girl's nose by accident! I was so- so mad! I accidentally had vines uncontrollably make her trip and she fell and broke her nose! I- I ran off into my void.
Estefina tenderly cupped her daughter's face, her eyes filled with understanding and concern. "Estรก bien, mi dulce niรฑa. Lo que sucediรณ fue un accidente. Tu furia y celos te llevaron por un camino que no esperabas." She paused, a flicker of worry crossing her features. "Espero que los policรญas no se acerquen a ti, pero si lo hacen... deseo de todo corazรณn que Hopper estรฉ ahรญ para apoyarte."
TRANSLATION; It's okay, my sweet girl. What happened was an accident. Your fury and jealousy led you on a path you didn't expect. I hope the police don't approach you, but if they do... I wish with all my heart that Hopper is there to support you.
With a gentle motion, Estefina brushed her daughter's hair behind her ears, ensuring she had her full attention. Drawing her close once more, she enveloped her in a warm, reassuring hug, hoping to provide solace in the midst of turmoil.
Josefina's voice quivered as she spoke, tears glistening in her eyes. "No fue mi intenciรณn, mamรก. ยกMax debe pensar que soy un monstruo!" She looked up at her mother, her gaze filled with guilt and self-doubt.
TRANSLATION; It wasn't my intention, mom. Max must think I'm a monster!
Estefina gently tilted her daughter's chin, wiping away a tear. "No eres un monstruo, Josefina. Todos cometemos errores. Y creeme, Max no te ve de esa manera. Estaba realmente preocupada por ti. Mike le contรณ a dรณnde habรญas ido, y ella, confundida, vino a preguntarme. Le expliquรฉ la situaciรณn, y entiende. No te juzga mal," she said, offering words of comfort as Josefina's brows knitted in concern.
TRANSLATION; You're not a monster, Josefina. We all make mistakes. And believe me, Max doesn't see you that way. I was really worried about you. Mike told her where you had gone, and she, confused, came to ask me. I explained the situation to him, and he understands. He doesn't judge you badly,
Josie's expression turned thoughtful. "Deberรญa conversar con ella," she mused. Estefina hummed in agreement, "Creo que sรญ deberรญas hablar, pero creo que ella ya estรก durmiendo... Asรญ que, utiliza tu magia para despertarla," she teased with a wink. A blush crept onto Josie's cheeks as she shook her head in playful exasperation. She then turned and headed back to her room, pondering the conversation ahead.
TRANSLATION; I should talk to her.
I think you should too, but she's asleep I think. . . So use that magic on her.
Tilting her head slightly, Josie watched as the door and curtains closed simultaneously. She climbed onto her bed, sitting cross-legged before closing her eyes. With a sudden gasp, she reopened her eyes to find herself immersed in her dream world. Seeing Max still asleep, she realized her alarm wouldn't sound for another fifteen minutes. "Max?" Josie beckoned, summoning her floating dream orb. As it descended towards her, a smile graced her lips, reaching out to touch the orb gently.
She chuckled softly, feeling herself drawn deeper into Max's dream. Finding herself in a familiar setting, she saw Max seated in detention at their old school. "Sunshine," Josie murmured affectionately, recognizing the nickname.
Max's eyes widened in surprise as she fully recognized Josie's presence. "Josie?" She questioned, her brow furrowing with confusion. As Josie approached, she reassured her, "It's really me, in your dream. I just wanted to express my gratitude... Thank you for confiding in my mom and for genuinely caring about me." A warm smile graced Josie's face as she spoke.
Max chuckled softly, "You're welcome... And wait, you're speaking in complete sentences?"
Josie shrugged nonchalantly, "It's your dream; it must be influencing how I communicate." She raked her fingers through her hair, looking around as Max nodded in acknowledgment.
Suddenly, a brilliant light pierced through, causing Max to squint. "What's happening?" she questioned, shielding her eyes with her hand. Josie smiled gently, "You're waking up. Until next time, darling," she said, winking and planting a soft kiss on Max's cheek before the dream began to fade.
As Josie's eyes fluttered open, she caught sight of her window. Outside, she could see Max, frustratedly smashing her alarm clock with her fist, groaning in exasperation. Josie couldn't help but giggle at the scene. Swiftly moving to her window, she squinted, taking aim at the pillow. With a quick motion, she yanked it off her bed and, with a mischievous smirk, hurled it towards Max's bedroom door, trying to get her attention in a playful manner.
Max furrowed her brow in sleepy confusion, glancing out her window to see Josie's amused expression. Without missing a beat, Max cheekily flipped her off. Josie responded in kind. The exchange sparked laughter from both rooms, creating a lighthearted moment of connection between the two friends.
ย ย ย ย ย JOSIE GOT TO SCHOOL A LITTLE LATE. Impatience growing, Josie found herself in Mr. Clarke's class, trying to stay attentive. Max, seated behind her, admired her friend's focus, even if it was waning. Suddenly, both their gazes snapped to the door as it swung open. Principal Brown's stern face appeared. "Josefina Cortez," he announced, "I need you to come with me."
Mike's eyes darted with concern. "Principal Brown, she needs an interpreterโ" He began to rise but was interrupted by Josie's reassuring touch on his shoulder. "I'll manage, Mike. I understand," she assured him. Mike nodded, reluctantly sitting back down. Meanwhile, Max felt her heart race with worry. As Josie exited with Principal Brown, Max lifted her hand, catching Mr. Clarke's attention. "Yes, Maxine?" he inquired.
Max met Mr. Clarke's gaze with determination. "It's Max," she clarified, prompting him to nod in acknowledgment. Without hesitation, she quickly said, "Can I go to the bathroom?" Recognizing the urgency in her expression, he gestured towards the door. "Ten minutes, Miss Mayfield!" he called out as Max sprang from her seat and dashed out of the room, determined to catch up with Josie.
Max hurried down the corridor towards the office, positioning herself discreetly by the door to listen in. She had seen the police presence earlier and suspected it was related to the incident. Determined to support Josie, she strained to hear the conversation inside.
Inside the room, Josie sat across from Hopper and his deputy. "Hey, Josefina," Hopper greeted, to which she responded with a soft smile. Taking a deep breath, Josie asked with a hint of hesitation, "Is this about S-Stacey?" Hopper gave a confirming nod. "Yes, can you explain what happened?"
Josie nodded gratefully. "Can I say in Spanish? It hard explain in English." she asked, seeking permission. Hopper glanced at his deputy, who promptly raised his hand, signaling his understanding of Spanish.
"Stacey estaba intentando llevar a Max hacia su grupo de amigos. Intentรณ besar a Max sin su consentimiento," Josie began, detailing the events.
"Stacey attempted to integrate Max into her circle and forcefully tried to kiss her," the deputy interpreted. Hopper pressed, "Is that when you hit her?" Josie's brow furrowed in frustration. "No, no. . . Eso no es lo que sucediรณ. Ella tropezรณ con sus pies." she clarified, shaking her head.
"That's not the sequence of events. She stumbled over her own feet," the deputy relayed. Hopper exhaled deeply, leaning in closer. "Josie, I believe you're a good kid. Just be honest with us. Did you intentionally trip her?" He queried, while his deputy interjected, "Could jealousy have been a factor?"
Josie shook her head fervently. "No, tienes que entenderlo. Es un malentendido. Tropezรณ con sus propios pies, cayรณ de bruces y se rompiรณ la nariz," she explained, her voice tinged with emotion. The deputy let out a dismissive snort, prompting Hopper to shoot him a stern look. "What did she say?" Hopper demanded, to which the deputy replied with a hint of annoyance, "She insists it was an accident. Stacey tripped, fell, and broke her nose."
Hopper's gaze settled on Josie, noting the hint of guilt in her expression. "Do you believe her, Hopper?" Callahan, the deputy, asked skeptically. Hopper shot him a pointed look. "Hey, Callahan, step out. I need a moment with her," he instructed, signaling that he wanted a private conversation with Josie.
Max's eyes widened with concern. She restrained herself, realizing she needed to ensure Josie's well-being discreetly. Resolving to uncover the truth later, she swiftly returned to her classroom.
As Callahan exited with a dismissive eye roll, Hopper ensured they were alone before leaning in. "Did you use your powers on her?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. Josie nodded, visibly tense. "It was accidental," she admitted, her voice strained. Hopper took a moment before responding, "I'll let you off with a warning this time. Just be more careful in the future, alright?" Josie managed a subdued "yes" in acknowledgment.
Hopper leaned back, signaling the end of their conversation. "Alright, head back to class," he directed. Josie swiftly pushed her chair back, jumping up and rushing out of the office. Upon returning to class, she took her seat next to Mike. The boys immediately swiveled their heads toward her, bombarding her with questions about what transpired.
"Are you alright?" Mike inquired, his eyes filled with concern.
Dustin leaned forward, a mischievous grin forming on his face. "What went down? Did Hopper give you a lecture?"
Lucas chuckled softly, raising an eyebrow. "Did you get a stern talking-to from Hopper?"
Will's expression shifted to one of genuine worry. "You're not in any trouble, are you?" he asked tentatively.
Max rolled her eyes and let out a frustrated sigh. "I'm fine," she reassured them. "I will fill you in on the details later," she said, her tone tinged with irritation.
Dustin nonchalantly shrugged his shoulders. "Perfect. You can spill the beans in the AV room at lunch, right before I unveil my groundbreaking discovery," he declared, punctuating his statement with exaggerated jazz hands. Josie shot him a puzzled look. "Huh?" she echoed, clearly intrigued yet confused by his enthusiasm.
"Boys... and girl, eyes up front, please," Mr. Clarke cautioned, drawing their attention back to him. They all offered a collective, "Sorry," acknowledging their distraction.
