Chapter 5: Dinner

I grab a plate from the cupboard and take a seat at the table while pouring cranberry sauce onto my turkey.

Everyone sat silent at the table.

I fiddle with my ring because I'm still nervous about what everyone will think. I can see Max is also nervous because he is playing around with a rope necklace that he always wears. Trina also noticed and stopped smiling. Finally when we finish, Georgia and Athens hand their plates to an Avox and left to their rooms. I also follow with Max and we both sit in his room. I find a small, arched, black remote. Max touches the remote and a screen appears. We have normal remotes, with buttons in District 2. Max hits a small square on the screen that says "2", and we watch the wall transform from a plain black wall to a tunnel with masons in it. It looks so real; The wall feels as though it was going to swallow me whole. I stare at a mason who had bright blond hair like Max's, a strong smile like Mom's, and crystal blue eyes like Savanna's and dimples like mine.

Dad.

A tear streams down my cheek. Max notices too and starts silently crying. We sit there right beside Dad, for 2 hours. My dad's name was Henry. Dad was a mason. Then, he met mom. When I was 13, Dad went to the military. He didn't want to go, but he had to, or the Capitol threatened to kill us and Aunt Ruse. When I was 14 and Max was 11, Dad was confirmed dead. He had several wounds and shots. Mom was devastated for 4 months, until she couldn't take it anymore. She ran away to another district. Ever since then, it was just me, Max, and Savanna.

Athens walks in with a tray. On the tray is two fancy glasses of apple cider (which I've only seen twice, once when I was 2 and once a few months ago) and two donuts. I wipe away my tears and thank Athens. He eyes my finger, and I place the ring in his palm. "My district token," I whisper. Max pulls out a scroll. It's a letter. Dad sent it to us the day he died, 2 hours before it happened. He promised to come home. It was his token. I sip my cider as Athens admires the ring. The pure bronze turns gold when in the light. It shines in the light. The engraving is very noticeable in the light. He smiles and laughs. "Even if you come out, you won't come out the same," he laughs. I curtly nod and take the ring back. I storm to my room. Why did Athens think it was so funny? It's a gift! He can't even respect that! I fall asleep thinking about that. All I could hear was Max's snoring. I was so frustrated! In 4 days, I'll be thrown into a death pit! That night, I barely slept. But that was OK.

Author's note: Sorry my chapters are so short! Hope you are enjoying the story. Thank y'all so much!
