Chapter 33: Failed Revenge

I make my way down the arena snow, searching for water that wasn't frozen. I ran out last night.

I regained my sight a few hours ago. Now I am fully aware of my surroundings.

As I walk, I think about the dream from last night. The girl looked just like Kirsten. Maybe it was telling me it was good she died. If she hadn't, and survived the games, who knows what they would have done to her? Put her through endless hours of torture by being an Avox, maybe be recruited into a lifetime punishment of peacekeeper training. But why? What did she do? Was she a rebel or something? Was the reaping in her District rigged so she would be picked as a punishment for her actions? Was she hiding something from me?

I also wonder about the tributes. How come there are so many pairs of people who are related to each other? So many families, siblings, cousins. So weird.

Suddenly, my attention is redirected in the direction of a tower of smoke. A fire.

A tribute is there.

Curiosity got the best of me as I switched routes and made my way there.

Once I finally reached my destination, I set down my things and gripped the axe, slowly walking into the vicinity.

I duck behind a large rock and watch. There was a group of four: a fragile little girl, a small boy the same age, and two older kids, the boy my age and the girl 18. They all huddled around a fire they made, warming up. I noticed only 2 of them had coats, the little boy and the older girl. They all were too skinny and looked tired. I think they are starving to death.

For a moment, I didn't know what to do. I wanted to help them out tremendously, but at the same time, this was the Hunger Games. In order for my victory, they must perish.

But the thought of humanity overpowered my brain, so I ended up rolling 5 potatoes into their circle before scurrying away. I watch over now, from on top of a tree. They make lots of exited noises. The two boys checked behind the rock to find me, but couldn't find anyone. They shrugged and went on roasting the potatoes anyways, gladly filling the space in their stomach. It looked like they had little to no food since the beginning of the games, assumed by their reaction at the sight of potatoes. I smile and watched as they quickly devoured the meal, and chattered happily for a while. I climb down the tree and started making my way back, when Sparrow popped up in front of me.

"What do you want?" I sharply ask, whispering.

"I want you out of my way." She responds, clearly not realizing that she needs to be more secretive.

"I can't win these games with a major threat like you in the way," she finishes, snickers, and drags me to the center or the circle where the other tributes sit.

"WHAT ARE YOU GUYS LOOKING AT? FINISH YOUR FOOD, AND GO! OR STAY, AND BE QUIET, UNLESS YOU WANT THIS HAPPENING TO YOU TOO!" Sparrow barks.

I shoot the little girl a unhappy look, and she frowns a bit, scared, hugging the older boy.

They all have confused, terrified looks on their faces. Sparrow stomps on the fire, taking it out, and throws me on the snow. I hit my head on a barricade of rocks surrounding the fire pit.

"You got to Shawn too fast. And now you will pay. Now, is my revenge." Sparrow says.

She dives onto the ground, the impact of her axe coming downwards toward my skull. I plug my nose and roll face first into the outer ring, bumping into a log. Sparrow grunts and charges at me with the axe with another failed attempt. I leap north towards the corner, diving under the axe. Her face turns red with shame, and tries a different method. As I pull out my own axe, she snatches the little girl and holds her tight.

"If I press down right here," Sparrow says, circling a spot on the girl's neck, "It will cause much pain. Maybe even a serious injury, or based on her condition, no breath, which leads to death."

"Now give up. Or let her die."

The little girl looks at me, her braided blond hair flying in the wind. Her blue eyes meet mine. They're full of fear and enlarged.

I have a different idea.

I pretend to give up and throw my hands up, walking to Sparrow.

She smirks, clearly amused. "Now come here."

I drop my axe and stand right in her face, jaw tightened. She lets go of the young girl and picks up the axe. She touches the axe to my stomach, and slowly pushes it in. But before it pierces my skin, I grab the axe and twist it around, but her reflexes are too slow. She drives the blade into her own stomach.

Sparrow's face goes pale, and her knees buckle, allowing her to fall to the ground. The little kids close their eyes hard and look away.

They all run away quickly, scurrying across the snow like a small squirrel.

Sparrow makes no noise at all, face emotionless, eyes wide open, chapped lips struggling to form words. I crouch next to her and hold her face to look at mine.

And the last thing she heard was, "Trust me. Revenge always backfires when I'm involved."

She tried to form something, her eyebrows creased, mouth struggling to move. All I heard was low, short gurgles.

Finally, she goes silent, and the cannon booms in the distance.
Before the hovercraft can make it to the body, I drop her head with a thud and walk away.

Revenge is sweet.
