Chapter 25: The Search
I get up, ready for the search covered in coal and ashes, and take a deep breath. Suddenly, Max gets up but immediately falls back down. He can't move!
Then, as if right on cue, the three horses come galloping to the rescue! Jasper scoops up Max and whinnies. He even nudged him to make sure Max was upright, and galloped with such precaution and speed. I made sure Coal was okay before we started. She had been getting better, but her ankle was a little red.
Before we started, I made sure that we all wet our clothes, just so we are a bit fresher. I was soaking wet, but luckily it was windy enough to dry us off quickly.
Ash then makes sure the horses are ready. We each take a pack and swing them onto our backs. I kick Coal a little and that gets her moving. We start our journey forward and don't stop. Suddenly, about 45 minutes in, Ashley sees a small red pack lying down under a well shaded tree. In the tree are plums; I am not sure if plums grow on trees, but it is probably modified by the Capitol anyways. I scale the tree easily and fill my practically empty pack to the brim with fruit. I munch on one and give the horses and my allies each one too. They all happily eat it up. Ash approaches the red pack. On it, there is white stitching it says Ashley Hamptons: District 1. She squeals in delight as she opens up the pack. Inside are a bunch of things that are useful for cold weather, like a coat and hot pouches, and much much more. Ash stuffs everything back in the bag and we move on.
Eventually, we approach a stream. No luck there, but as we were shifting through the water to find the bags, Max finds a route of mud. I groan as we trudge through the mud.
Suddenly, when we reach the mud land, I am pleasantly surprised with the brightest, most neon yellow pack that I could easily spot from a few miles away. It said, Cocoa Shear: District 4. It was the girl that I saw at the parade! The beautiful redhead was probably the sweetest, most delicate person I have ever met. I sigh. I can't just give this to her! I need it. For survival reasons. I lift my arm up and present the muddy bag to Ash. She frowns and says, "Lets leave this here for her. Just because we are in the games doesn't mean that we lost humanity!"
She smiles as she quickly wets and drys the bag, nudging it in between two rocks and covering it with moss.
We try searching through the chicken coop that my allies discovered earlier. To our shock, the chickens and eggs are all gone! We try looking through every inch of the tiny coop. We even try to look under it, but there are no signs of packs there.
Next we check the Oak Hole. At least, that's what Cocoa called it. We spot Cocoa there searching for her pack frantically. She is muttering something to herself over and over and over again. We can't make it out though. The poor girl looks about a year younger than me. Her red hair is tied up in a messy ponytail with dirt everywhere and she looks evidentially skinnier than when I first saw her. Her clothes are mostly ripped and she looks like she had been crying a lot. In the middle of her search, we watch as she collapses in a miserable pile and cries to herself for an hour. Then she leaves and we pursue our search, finding nothing except for a raw egg left behind and a useless stick.
Lastly, we check the rock. When we do this, I leave my pack filled with fruit under a tree. I check the hole under the rock, but someone discovered it before we arrived and took all the clean water! Luckily, the culprit left the tracker wedged under the hinges where I left it, so I take it and shove it in my pocket. I sigh in disappointment. Walking back to my pack, I tell Ash and Max the bad news. Even sadder, when we reached the tree, someone seemed to have taken the fruit and bag! Now we were doomed for sure. We literally had NOTHING but for Ash's new pack, the weapons, the syrup, the canteens, the sleeping bags, and the trackers. Everything else ran out or got stolen, 99% stolen. Can you believe it? At this point, we were raided of all supplies about 3 times! I can't even keep track anymore!
At this point, it is almost dark, and we had to find shelter and the other two packs. We searched frantically all the way up to this point. We then decide to give up and go to sleep. Max signals the horses to go off into the wild. Their work is done. At this point, we can't survive the rest of the games without those packs! Suddenly, while I am getting comfortable in the grass, I hear a shout. It's Max!
I get up and quickly run in the direction of the scream. Over there, I see Max smiling while holding up a dark blue pack and dark green pack. I laugh.
"Yes!" I shout.
"Let's go back to camp and gear up for the climate change tomorrow," Max states. We do as he says.
At camp, the three of us go through what we have.
Every bag contains a dark green lightweight coat that reaches our hips, two heat pouches, a pair of thin green gloves with the fingers exposed that reach the wrist, a odd looking watch, a flashlight, and lastly a cracker pack. The coats seem to have our names stitched in white in tiny letters. Like that's going to benefit us in any way possible.
While Ash and I evenly split the crackers for tomorrow, Max found a little cave that we can stay in for the night. It was really dark inside, but we used the flashlights. It really lit up the cave.
As the darkness fills the night sky, Ash and I take out the fire and wash our boots. We set camp up in the cave by the stream. Cocoa seemed to have found her pack, because it was gone. Max and I take turns scrubbing, washing and drying our shirts. We leave them drying on a rock by the entrance of the cave in the wind and decide to sleep in the green tank tops under the t-shirts. I decide to explore the entire cave, and it is so small. There are exactly 1 round room section thing that is REALLY tiny, the floor of it covered in hay. we set up each sleeping bag in the small, cramped room and drift off to sleep.
We can do it!
