Chapter 23: Death Count (Day 2)
When I arrive at the hut, I find Max and Ash setting up 3 banana leaves as plates and putting out the water. Ash and Max finish wrapping the tarp up onto the entrance.
"What happened? Don't you want to watch the death toll?" I ask, confused.
"We can still watch it through this hole we made. It's at the perfect angle so we can see the death toll. We can fill it back up again later. If we open the tarp, the cold air will get in. When you were gone, we got another parachute, but it was a note only. It said "Good Luck Finding Supplies." Max responds. "I don't get it. Maybe it will come in handy tomorrow. We will see.
"Look! We got eggs too from a chicken coop we found a long way from here," Ash comments. "I boiled them already, we can eat them."
I nod in delight as we heat up the chicken. I take a sip of water and rip off 3 equal parts off the meat, placing each one on a banana leaf. I then pass out the eggs. Each person got 2 eggs. The steaming hot chicken looked delicious. There was a appetizing orange substance thing oozing out, and the smoke seemed to fill the air. I lick my lips and dig in. When I bite the meat off the delicious bone, The spicy yet sweet substance exploded in my mouth, and tartness burst across my tongue. I could still feel the warmth trickling down my windpipe. Suddenly, the night sky burst into a screen, and I could see the Capitol Seal shining. I could hear the sky erupt in song, the anthem filled the air. Faces started flashing by.
First up was May. Poor kid.
Then August, from 5.
When April from 6 showed up, I was starting to think that it wasn't a coincidence. When I first saw their hut, it was practically empty. They must have died from starvation or thirst.
Lastly was Shawn. When his face shone, I could hear an angry yet sad cry from the direction of the Cornucopia. Probably Sparrow. I sighed and went into another bite, but the anthem didn't stop. A voice boomed across the arena. It said:
"Dear Fellow Tributes,
I understand that this is one of the most difficult games, and I can promise it's gonna be long. I am the announcer, Claudius Templesmith. As you all know, I am a fairly new and young announcer, so I am proud to announce that there will be something fairly exciting going down tomorrow afternoon. You will be replenished with necessary supplies for these new conditions, but all your supplies are packed in a bag with your name and district on it somewhere hidden in this arena. The bags will be buried and hidden tonight. You may start looking for it at 11:00 A.M. tomorrow morning. If anyone leaves their premises from now to 10:59 to start searching, you will be automatically blown up by a mine. All mines will deactivate when its search time. Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor!"
The anthem stops and the seal disappears. I am in shock. I gobble up the rest of my meal and lie down to rest.
"Better get some sleep if you want those supplies!" I say.
I then get lost in my own delight and drift away into sleep.
