The Challenges We Face

Going back to those chapters where Bob ( - ) now means that it's changing perspectives. I really liked how this turned out and I feel like this is a huge improvement in my writing compared to like last year so I hope you enjoy!

Martyn's Perspective-

"You doing okay?" Jimmy asked as he and Martyn were at the arcade.

"Yeah, I just need to get out of my head." Martyn sighed, turning the steering wheel on the Mario Kart game they were playing.

Jimmy turned his attention back to the machine and pushed down the gas pedal, watching as Luigi jumped ahead into first.

Martyn mashed the item button, and his red shell flew at Luigi, hitting him.

Shy Guy sped up and raced to the finish line, ending the game.

Jimmy groaned and the machine flashed a sentence telling him how many coins to put in.

"Wanna play again?" Jimmy asked, fishing his hand in his pocket to find his coins.

"I'm good." Martyn stood up and the two strolled through the busy arcade.

They found Grian at the pinball machines, his eyes glued on the Jaws themed one. His hand snapped to the button, the flipper jerking up and shooting the ball into the shark's mouth.

"Cod dammit!" Grian huffed and he ran his hand through his messy hair.

Jimmy chuckled. "How's pinball going?"

"I think that shark's eaten like five of the balls." Grian grumbled, glaring at the machine.

"Aw come on, you're probably just tired or something. You rule at pinball." Jimmy said and Grian smiled a bit.

"Wanna play that Simpsons game they got down the hall?" Martyn asked, pointing over his shoulder.

The trio huddled around the machine, picking their characters before mashing the attack button and moving along with the pixelated game.

They died in the third world and Martyn took out his water bottle from his Bowser shell backpack, taking a sip.

Jimmy gave Martyn puppy dog eyes and Martyn sighed.

"Fine, just waterfall." He handed Jimmy his water and Jimmy opened his mouth, pouring some in.

"I'm surprised we haven't lost you in DDR." Grian chuckled, folding his arms.

"Eh, I'm kinda tired of it." Martyn lied.

Grian raised an eyebrow.

"Since when do you get tired of DDR? Heck, you probably even do it in your sleep."

Martyn chuckled and shrugged, taking his water back from Jimmy, who wiped his mouth.

"Yeah, seriously. What's going on?" Jimmy asked.

Martyn looked away, avoiding their eye contact. He saw a brightly lit Back to The Future pinball machine and sighed.

He was about to speak but Grian cut him off.

"Ohh, it's about the play, right? Well don't worry, you'll do great! And we can help you run lines if you want."

Martyn shut his mouth, and he hesitated before nodding.

-

"Yeah, I guess it's just that." Ren shrugged, folding his legs on his desk. "It can be a lot at times."

Sadie hummed, laying her head on her arms.

"Yeah, I mean, this is stressful." She said.

"I don't even know how you deal with being student director." Ren said, turning to her.

Sadie shrugs, smiling.

"It's easier than you'd think. And I don't gotta be super stressed during tech week." Sadie said.

"Lucky." Ren sighed, leaning his head back. His hair cascaded over his shoulders and chair.

Big B walked back to his room holding a couple snacks.

Sadie gasped and walked over, stealing a bag of Goldfish.

"Ren, get your feet off my desk." Big B glared and Ren smiled sheepishly, moving his feet.

Big B grumbled and wiped the dirt off, making sure to spill some of it on Ren.

"Wha- hey!"

Big B stuck out his tongue and Ren rolled his eyes, dusting himself off.

"So what're you losers talking about?" Big B asked, sitting on his bed.

"Ren's a bit stressed about theatre." Sadie said, her voice muffled through her snacking.

"I thought you loved theatre, isn't that why you did it for four years?" Big B pointed out.

"I mean, yeah." Ren shrugged, stealing a cracker from Sadie's bag. "But it's just...different this year."

"He's salty about getting the bully role." Sadie said and Ren flushed red.

"Am not!"

Sadie giggled and Big B nodded, understanding.

"I just thought I would be good as the Doc or Marty, but Scar got Doc, and some newbie got Marty..." Ren mumbled.

"You gave a new kid the main role?" Big B raised an eyebrow and Sadie shrugged.

"He was good! And besides we thought Ren would be good for the bully. He's really intimidating."

"Yeah, but...I don't know I guess I just would like more spotlight."

"Someone's jelly." Big B teased and Ren glared at him.

"Just saying!" He held up his hands in mock surrender and Ren rolled his eyes.

"So who's playing Marty?" Big B asked Sadie.

"I think you know him, right?" She asked, glancing over at Ren for an answer.

Ren sighed and turned away, folding his arms.

Big B tilted his head, the gears turning in his head. His eyes widened as he realized who it was and he looked at Sadie, who simply shrugged.

The two turned to their friend, who kept his head down and let out a bitter aura.

"It's like, I'm trying to do a good job, and it seems like everyone's going against me." Mumbo ranted, very frustrated.

Scar frowned, "It'll be alright, you always figure this stuff out."

"It just seems harder than usual..."

Scar smiled a bit.

"What?" Mumbo snapped a bit, upset. He then sighed. "Sorry, sorry; I'm just mad."

"You're alright; you know this happens every year though, right?" Scar pointed out.

Mumbo hesitated, thinking about what Scar said.

Scar smiled and pet Katy Bee, who was purring happily in his lap.

"Every year, even if it's the page you desperately wanted, you start complaining and stressing out."

"Huh...I guess I do." Mumbo said slowly.

"Martyn's just dealing with stuff, but he'll get back to you and the page will be good! And talk to Mr. Raymond about getting more time, I'm sure he'll understand. I know the deadline's tight but he's big on making it look good."

Mumbo chuckled, remembering his teacher's reaction to his middle school's yearbooks.

"And you're like his favorite student." Scar said and Mumbo blushed, embarrassed.

"I'm not his favorite..." Mumbo muttered, scratching the back of his red neck.

"Mumbo, he treats you like you're his son."

Mumbo smiled weakly, feeling thankful for Mr. Raymond.

"Whatever you do, it's gonna turn out well! You just gotta stop worrying."

-

"Yeah...just gotta stop worrying."

That last sentence was something everyone said btw. But yes I actually had fun writing this and I think if you compare it to like The Fire You Light My Heart With, you can see improvement.
