Cup of Love

Mumbo's Perspective-

The gentle jazz music played softly in the background of the café; the comfortable atmosphere helping calm Mumbo.

He took out his laptop, glancing up at Martyn who looked uninterested.

"Er- sorry, this shouldn't take long if you're worried."

"No, it's alright, I'm just tired." He yawned and stretched.

A waiter who had blonde hair that was dyed purple at the ends walked over. His hair was tied into a messy ponytail, and he wore an apron that read 'The Major's Café' and had an embroidered poppy on it.

"Welcome, what can I get you two started with?" He asked, taking out his notepad and clicking his pen.

"Iced tea, half sweet half unsweet with a lemon please." Mumbo said, typing on his computer.

Martyn raised an eyebrow at the oddly complex order but shrugged it off and turned to the taller male.

"I'll just have some coffee." He said.

Martyn chuckled. "Course."

Xornoth left and Martyn messed with the cream and sugar packets on the table.

"You drink coffee this late?" Mumbo asked, tilting his head.

"Eh, it's fine. I can sleep in this weekend." Martyn shrugged.

Mumbo chuckled, "Fair enough."

"So what did you need to ask me?" Martyn asked, sitting up.

"Just a couple questions for the story, that's all. Oh, and can I have your last name?"

"Litle-Wood. Martyn Little-Wood." Martyn said and Mumbo nodded, typing it down.

"You type fast." Martyn muttered.

Mumbo blushed a bit, "Thanks. Kids used to make fun of me last year cause of how fast and loud I typed."

Martyn snorted. "Damn, that sucks. I can't believe people would go that low. If anything, it's an admirable trait."

Mumbo smiled and he nodded.

"Right, so how did you first start theatre?"

"Er- well I signed up to be backstage with my friend Jimmy, but I ended up just...getting the main part."

Mumbo tilted his head, confused.

"Yeah, it was kinda weird." Martyn chuckled, scratching the back of his neck.

The waiter walked back over and set down their drinks before asking if they wanted anything else. The two dismissed him and Mumbo squeezed the lemon in his iced tea.

"Why is your order so specific?" Martyn asked, opening one of the creamers and pouring it into his coffee.

"Oh- it's just a drink that Mr. Ray told me he liked. It gives you a bit of caffeine, but you don't end up losing sleep." Mumbo said and Martyn hummed, blowing on his drink before taking a sip.

"So you just...accidentally got into theatre?" Mumbo asked, his hands resting on the keyboard.

Martyn hesitated before shrugging.

"I mean, I always kinda knew about it and I had some friends in it; it seemed like fun, but uh- yeah I signed up for run crew because I didn't think I would run into the actors that much and then I got the lead part with improvising the scene."

Mumbo nodded slowly, typing down a summary of Martyn said.

"So how were you first introduced to theatre?"

Martyn put his mug down, making eye contact with Mumbo.

Mumbo saw the defeated expression and he was about to say they could skip the question when Martyn simply said,

"I guess DDR."

"...DDR?"

"There's that dance game at the arcade I used to go to all the time with my brother and I really enjoyed it and the attention I got from passing people so..." Martyn shrugged, lying well enough for Mumbo to believe him.

"Does theatre cause dance obsessed..." Mumbo whispered as he typed.

"Wha- hey!!" Martyn flushed red and Mumbo laughed. Martyn glared at him and Mumbo smiled.

"I'm kidding, I'm kidding. I'm not gonna write that." Mumbo grinned, hitting the delete key with his pinkie finger.

"You better not." Martyn fake pouted and Mumbo chuckled.

He asked Martyn a couple more questions and the two walked out of the café.

Mumbo sipped his tea that was put in a takeout cup, and he had his messenger bag hung over his shoulders.

"So do you enjoy journalism?" Martyn asked as they strolled downtown.

"Yeah, it's nice. The teacher's great and it's pretty fun. But if you struggle with deadlines, it's best you don't join." Mumbo said.

Martyn hummed and nodded.

"But you must be good at that since you're in theatre and gotta deal with tech week."

"Tech week?"

Mumbo blinked and he raised an eyebrow.

"Er- yeah. How do you not know what tech week is?"

Martyn sniffed before saying, "Do you just mess around with the spotlights and stuff that week?"

Mumbo laughed.

"Oh cod, you're gonna wanna talk to Scar about that. That's soon too."

Martyn shrugged and nodded. He stopped outside the arcade and pointed to it.

"You up for a couple games?"

"Ah, I can't sorry. I told my mom she could pick me up back at the school after we finished."

"Does she know we finished?" Martyn asked, a smirk on his face.

"No...?"

"Then what's the harm in doing a game or two?" Martyn nodded his head towards the brightly lit building.

Mumbo hesitated before sighing.

"Alright fine, but you can't let me near that dumb quarter pushing machine."
