PRESENT DAY, EAST BLUE SEA

the sun was always the most beautiful to sapphire over the horizon in east blue. especially with it rose over the coast line like a blooming rose in the spring time. east blue was one of the four seas of the grand line. it was beautiful, lively and the colors were super vibrant. home to many dreamers, schemers, and pirates. home to many wonders.

monkey d. luffy, aspiring pirate king and a devil fruit eater, had high hopes about reaching his goal. he wanted to find the one piece and become the king of pirates and he was pretty determined to do so. atlantica d. sapphire, a young lady of beauty, wonder and grace, tagged along with him. not like she had a choice to say no. luffy wouldn't let her.

ever since they were kids, and after she told luffy of her dreams of exploring the world, he had made it his life's mission to make sure she, too, achieved that dream. which he thought was perfect. because with her being his first lady, she can stick with him all while seeing the world.

and as happy as she is to be alongside him on this adventure, she did not anticipate them being practically stuck in a small dingy boat in the middle of the east blue ocean with the scotching sun blaring over their skin. nor did she anticipate luffy would actually start to talk to a mail bird that landed on their wooden boat.

sapphire sat with the sun on her back as she continued to write in her leather journal. she wanted to write the story of captain monkey d. luffy for when he does become pirate king. so that the world can know how it all started through her perspective. and as soon as they left their village, she began writing. documenting the start of their history.

"ever since we were kids, shanks would tell us stories about the pirates and their adventures." luffy said to the mail bird, looking up from underneath his straw hat. which was given to him by said red haired pirate.

he had been resting his head on sapphire's lap, while covering his face with his straw hat from the heated sun. sapphire, barely paying attention to his one sided conversation with the bird, kept writing on the first page of her journal. it was like she was paying attention but not, at the same time. she wrote down that luffy might be going crazy due to him not having any food in over a day but she didn't write down his words.

"so yeah, the sea's been calling." he finished his point, smiling at the bird.

sapphire looked up and noticed that there was sea water coming into the boat. she closed her journal and placed it back into her bag.

"well, not really calling." she added as she stood up and began scooping the water out of the boat, tossing it back into the ocean. "luffy can't swim. he ate a devil fruit and now, he's made of rubber."

"hey, sapphie!" luffy whined, standing up. "that was my line."

"well, my luffy, you were dragging the story." she said teasingly, looking over her shoulder at him. shooting him a grin before she continued to scoop the water out of the boat. "i was just getting straight to the point."

she huffed, dropping the bucket. seeing as that wasn't working, she decided to just use her magic. sapphire's hand glowed blue as she waved it over the water, making it swirl up and fly out of the boat completely.

"oh yeah, sapphie is a sea witch." luffy told the bird with a grin on his face. "and an excellent singer. she's gonna have her songs heard all around the world. and she's going to sing about our journey to find the one piece."

sapphire dusted off her flowy and long white layered skirt ( which was shorter in the front than it was in the back ) as she turned to face luffy, who was still at the back of the boat. just not laying down anymore.

"but we'll need a crew." she added to his words. "the two of us, although unstoppable, can't do it alone."

"exactly!" luffy snapped his fingers at her. "i think about ten men."

"maybe a few women." sapphire suggested as her long and jet black hair flowed through the sea breeze. "i love you, my luffy, but i will need some kind of female around to help keep you in check."

"you're all i need, sapphie." he said, chuckling at her. "i wouldn't want anyone else to keep me in line but you."

sapphire blushed a little at his words but still gave him a sweet smile. luffy, although unaware of it, could say the sweetest yet most unconventional compliments ever. he could be very sweet whenever he wasn't being too honest or stubborn. and she loved that about him.

but before she could say anything, she noticed that the water was coming back. which made her sigh in annoyance as she began making the sea water float out of the water. this boat was going to sink soon if they didn't find land or a way to close up the hole in their boat.

"so, are you with us?" luffy asked the mail bird. who squawked and flew away. making him deadpan.

"such betrayal already and we haven't even gathered a proper ship." she sighed, watching it fly further away. "just said nope and flew away.....how rude."

"eh, who needs him?" he shrugged off before walking over to sit back down. "how are you able to understand animals, by the way?"

for as long as luffy could remember, sapphire was able to actually understand what animals were saying. and it wasn't limited to land animals, too. she understood sea animals, as well. oftentimes found holding conversations with the turtles on the beaches of foosha island and even with some of the fishes that swam near the shore, sapphire had a connection to wild and sea life. it was a cool talent of hers, luffy thinks. 

"you mean you can't hear them talk, as well?" sapphire asked, tilting her head to the side a little. she often forgot that while she heard the animals and sea creatures speak words, others only heard the sounds they made or just saw them swim around. 

"no, i-" 

just as he was about to speak, another wave hit their small boat, splashing into the boat. "ugh! seriously?!" she mumbled, annoyed with the ocean. "can you please be nice to us, miss ocean?" 

"how do you know that the ocean is a woman?" luffy asked, fixing his hat.

"nothing this beautiful and mysterious can be a man." she answered, manipulating the water into flying back out of the boat. "at this rate, we'll drown." 

spotting the barrels on the side of their boat, luffy thought of an idea. albeit risky, but anything to keep him from sinking in the ocean and to keep sapphire as safe as he possibly could. 

"in here." he said, getting the barrel and opening it for her. 

"the barrel?" sapphire asked, concerned for the space and the fact that it could break. since luffy ate that devil fruit, he couldn't swim at all. "are you sure?"

luffy could see her concerns. but now wasn't the time to be hesitant when their boat was literally sinking. "not conventional but it's better than this." he grinned, gesturing to their rapidly sinking boat. "besides, it would make a funny story, right?" 

sapphire pursed her lips, unsure but obliged. he was right. it would make a rather hilarious story in the future. and she could write this down in her journal. how the great captain monkey d. luffy and the first lady sapphire had to travel in a barrel across the sea to keep from drowning. the people who read her story will be having a blast with it. 

she carefully climbed into the barrel, making sure her bag was dry enough. once she was in, luffy climbed in after her, closing the lid. 

"oh man," he mumbled, watching as their boat was now completely submerged as their barrel floated away with the waves. "it's our first day." 

"at least we still have the food." sapphire spoke optimistically. their voices echoed in the barrel as it drifted off. "miss makino gave me loads of fruits."

"oooh! gimme!" 

"my luffy! be careful!"  

a few hours that same day, the sun began to set. creating a pretty pink and orange sky effect. luffy fell asleep with his head over his head while sapphire continued to write in her journal. this time, she was documenting their current situation. finding comedy in it. after she was done, she decided to read a book shanks, her captain friend, gave her before he had to leave. it was a book about pirates. 

gold roger, the late pirate king, and all of his adventures. all of the pirates he's met, the foes he's bested, and the treasure he's found. each chapter was about a different pirate he has met. this time, she was on a chapter titled 'triton d. oceania' 

it was about another famous pirate captain. her name was triton d. oceania. the captain of the sea serpent crew, she sailed on the grand and luxurious ship named 'the atlantean'. a ship that was said to be so grand and beautiful, it brought tears to the eyes of her allies and fear to the hearts of her enemies. 

her crew was filled with both strong men and women, all skilled fighters and marksmen. devera, the first mate of captain oceania, was said to be an extremely tall woman with long black hair and ferocious eyes. she was attached to oceania's side and was said to have known her since she was a child. devoted to protecting and serving oceania, devera was an extremely dangerous warrior. skilled in sword fighting and shooting, they called her 'snake eyes vera' and her bounty was just as high as oceania's. 

it was also said that oceania was a siren amongst humans. and because of that, she and her crew disappeared. without a trace or a lead as to where they could possibly be. no one knows what happened to her or her crew. rumors spread that the atlantean was sunk by the marines and the crew went down with it to save themselves from being executed. refusing to fold to the law and keeping to their free-spirited hearts. others say that they made it to the grand line and are living peacefully in riches, on a private island where they are free. 

the entire story was so exciting to sapphire. to hear all of the things she did and went through. she admired oceania. sapphire hoped that she could meet her, one day. that is, if she's actually alive. she'll know when they get to the grand line. maybe even then she could meet a siren. they were said to live in hadal cove. a somewhat fabled island filled with different mythical creatures of all kinds. where sirens don't have to live in fear of humans. 

but there was a picture of oceania in the book. and she was just as beautiful as they say. her smile was jovial yet very mischievous, her hair was curly and long and she dressed elegantly and feminine. like she was the richest woman alive. although she was said to be one of the richest captains of her time. 

but that's not what caught sapphire's eyes. it was the birthmark on oceania's collarbone. it was in the shape of a sea dragon. the only reason she was so enamored with it was because she had a similar birthmark on her collarbone. her's was smaller but it was identical. 

sapphire frowned a little and stared at it for a while. her fingers slowly reaching up to touch hers as she gazed upon oceania's photo. she wondered why they shared the same birthmark and why oceania seemed....familiar to her. like she should know her. it was an annoying tug in her brain that was telling her that she should know who oceania is. and not just because she was a famous pirate. but...on a deeper level. 

her thoughts were interrupted when she suddenly heard cannon shots outside of the barrel. making her jump and yelp a little. luffy was still snoring away. as if he couldn't hear anything at all. which sapphire admired about him. his ability to be relaxed in the face of dangerous situations. or it was probably because he had no self preservation. either way, she admired it. 

"what the-" she mumbled, suddenly feeling their barrel being lifted up. which could only mean one thing. they were being brought aboard someone's ship. "oh neptune...." 

she didn't hear much from the inside of the barrel. just a lot of muffled talking all at once and some lady yelling really loudly about a person named roronoa zoro. sapphire hoped whoever he was, he avoided this lady. she didn't seem nice, at all. 

after some hours, their barrel was placed in a room of some sort. sapphire, who had fallen asleep due to getting pretty bored of trying to figure out what she could hear from outside the barrel, noticed that all of the talking from a few hours ago was gone and the ocean sounded muffled. which meant that they were now in a room. 

also luffy's stomach growled rather loudly and being in an enclosed space like that, it was very loud. 

"luffy?" she mumbled, waking up to his roaring stomach. 

"good, you're awake." he whispered. his face was very close to hers, due to the fact that he had been trying to see if she was still alive or not. "i thought i lost you for a second." 

sapphire's glowing light blue eyes widened at how close his face was to hers. she could feel his breath on her lips and his body heat wavering over hers. it made her cheeks flare a light pink. luffy had no understanding of the concept of personal space. neither did she, but this was the first time she's had a boy lean this close to her like that. 

luffy is her best friend, yes. but they weren't kids anymore. and she couldn't help but notice how handsome he was to her. 

luffy noticed her staring and curiously grinned at her. "sapphie, you're turning red." he mumbled, chuckling slightly. having no close just how much he was causing her heart to pound. "are you sea sick?" 

"n-no.." she mumbled sheepishly, looking away. trying to hide her flustered face. "i-i think we are on someone's ship." 

"yeah, i know." he replied, wanting to take a look but was trying to hear if anyone was around them. that's when his stomach growled loudly again. "oops....i think i'm hungry." 

"luffy, you are almost all of the fruit already." sapphire giggled out. "you eat any more and we'll-" 

"w-who's there?" a shaky and nervous voice could be heard from outside their barrel. answering their question. 

about a half of a second later, both luffy and sapphire lifted the top of the barrel off. they poked their heads above and noticed that they were in a lower deck of a ship. it was night time and the room was pretty dark. except for the moon light that glared through a window. 

scanning the room, sapphire spotted a boy. possibly their age, small, skinny, pale and had light pink hair. he was wearing glasses and had the pinkest lips she has ever seen. also he looked about ready to faint. 

suddenly, he started screaming bloody murder. causing her to jolt at how high his voice could go. which was amazing to her. 

"hey!" she called out, climbing out of the barrel. "we're not here to hurt anyone!" 

but the boy kept screaming and flailing about. all while trying to get away from them as much as possible. luffy quickly followed suit, trying to get him to stop screaming. at this point, he fell to the ground, crawling backwards away from them. "hey-! wait-!" 

but it seemed like nothing could get him to stop. that was, until luffy walked right up to him, squatted down to his level and slapped his hand over his mouth. "knock it off!" he commanded. 

the pink haired boy frantically nodded, stopping his screaming. but was still very much petrified. which sapphire can understand why. it's not every day a person sees two people crawl out of a barrel. 

"please, don't kill me." he pleaded after luffy let go of his face. "please."

"it's okay." sapphire said in a soothing voice. she knelt down next to luffy, giving the boy a sweet smile. "we're not here to harm you. i promise. i know it might be scary to see two people come out of a barrel but i promise you, we are not scary." 

the boy stared into her eyes. almost like he was being hypnotized by her. her eyes were the bluest he has ever seen. more blue than the ocean or any jewels in all of east blue. and the longer he stared at them, the calmer he felt himself growing. it was like she was using magic on him or something. and the only time he snapped out of whatever hypnotic effect she placed on him was when luffy spoke again. 

"first thing's first, though." luffy interrupted his trance-like state. "do you have any food here? i'm starving and sapphie is, too." 

sapphire giggled again. luffy was such a giant food monster. he could eat an entire buffet and still ask for seconds and dessert. "don't mind my luffy." she chuckled out, pulling out an apple from her bag and giving it to him. "his stomach is deeper than an abyss." 

"alvida doesn't let me eat until after she finishes her meal." the boy tells them, watching them as he remains on the sandbags he fell on, fixing his glasses. 

"who's alvida?" luffy asked, chomping on the apple. he offered her a bite, which she happily took before giving it back to him. 

"this is her ship." he whispered, as if this alvida was listening to them. "she's the captain of the alvida pirates." 

"you mean that scary and ugly voice i heard earlier was alvida?" sapphire paused and looked at him with her head tilted to the side. thinking back to that voice she heard hours ago. "but that's good, because my luffy and i are pirates, too. he's the captain and i'm the first lady. i also dabble in botany, magic, history recording, singing and i'm a pretty good marksman, if i do say so myself." 

"she's really good." luffy agreed with his mouth full of apples. "grandpa taught her how to shoot when we were kids. she once shot a rock without looking at it." 

"you two don't look like pirates." he mumbled, surveying their appearance. they weren't what he would say pirates looked like. they were young, maybe as young as he is. 

but the girl looked like she was nothing human. she was way too exquisite looking to be a rough and tough pirate. she looked like she belonged in a fairy tale. she looked very magical. 

"what do they look like?" she asked, dusting off her skirt with the sleeves of her light blue cardigan. 

"pirates are scum." he said, a disgusted tone filled his trembling voice. anyone can tell he's run into some bad pirates so she didn't blame him for his fear of them. "they're thieves and murderers." 

sapphire and luffy immediately thought of shanks as both of them shared a knowing smile to each other before turning back to him. "not the ones we've met." 

10 YEARS AGO, WINDMILL VILLAGE

sapphire and luffy couldn't be more excited that morning. it was the day shanks and his crew came back to their island. and like always, the two would make their way to the ports and sneak to hide near the barrels near his ship to see him. whenever luffy wanted to surprise him, it would get ruined because as soon as sapphire saw shanks, she would immediately call out his name and run to him. 

and sure enough, the same thing happened. as soon as she saw the red haired captain, sapphire couldn't contain her happiness and quickly ran from behind the barrels. 

"sapphie!" luffy called out, quickly running after her. "at least wait for me." 

"shanks!" she cheered as she swiftly maneuvered past his working crew mates. "shanks!" 

the red haired captain heard the familiar small and adorable voice of the little girl whom he met some time ago. and has taken a liking to him. he turned around and swiftly caught her in his arms, dawning a big smile on his face. 

"oh, my darling!" he cheered, lifting her up in the air. allowing her to hug him by his neck as he carried her in his arms. "look at you, little sea star. you're prettier than a pearl. how have you been? you're still singing your little heart out?" 

sapphire pulled back to smile at him as he held her on his hip. "loud and proud." 

"loud and proud." he repeated, poking her nose with his free hand. causing her to giggle.

"our favorite little street urchins came to welcome us back."  one of his crew members said, turning to them. he poked sapphire's cheek and ruffled luffy's head of curly hair. "how've ya been, kids?" 

"we're not urchins, silly. we're pirates." sapphire said innocently. 

her words caused them all to laugh a little. all of them thinking she was the most adorable little girl they have ever had the fortune to meet. but she was being serious. and so was luffy. they were pirates and that's what they wanted to become when they got older. 

"she's not joking! we're ready to join your crew!" luffy said defensively. one thing he hated was being taken as a joke when he was being serious. he admired shanks and wanted him to see himself as an equal. despite being too young to really understand the dangers of piracy. 

"the sea isn't a child's game." shanks said with honesty in his voice as he carried a barrel with one hand and held sapphire using his other arm. "it's dangerous. the scars on my face are proof of that." 

sapphire played with the strap of his straw hat as she listened to the conversation. shanks passed off the barrel to another crew member before gesturing to the scars on his face. he had three slash scars over his right eye from his time sailing. she never knew how he got it because every time she asked, he would just tell her that he would tell her the story when she was older. so she stopped asking. 

"sapphie and i can do it, i swear." he persisted, following shanks. 

shanks sighed looking at sapphire, who was playing with both the strap on his straw hat and his longish red hair. sapphire didn't look like a dangerous pirate. she looked way too cute to strike any fear in anyone. he almost laughed. he would hate to see the life of a pirate taint her innocence. which is why shanks cared for her like a father would their daughter. 

"i highly doubt that little sea star, here, can cause anyone to fear her." he said. "and you are especially not ready." 

"i am!' luffy huffed, irritated that he wasn't taking him seriously. "and i'll prove it to you!" 

with that, he stormed off, feeling irritated and upset. sapphire watched as luffy walked away in a huff. she pursed her lips, feeling bad that he was upset. "is my luffy going to be okay?" 

"he'll be fine." shanks sighed out, watching him leave. "he just needs to let off some steam alone, i believe. he's a growing boy, after all." 

sapphire hummed a little. "hey, shanks! do you have any more sea shells for me?" she suddenly asked, beaming at him excitedly. 

every time shanks and his crew came to the village, he would always give her all of the sea shells he found. rather they were small or big, she loved receiving them from one of the people she cared so much about. 

"i've got something better."  he replied back with a grin as he walked her over to a chest nearby. "look what i've got." 

he used his free hand to open the chest, revealing a pretty necklace. the pendant was a medium sized marble white clam shell with gold accents. the necklace had strings of pearls on the chain. sapphire's eyes widened, a gasp escaped her lips as shanks slowly took the necklace out of the box and held it up to her to grab. 

"they say that this once belonged to captain oceania." he recited the story. sapphire carefully took the necklace and held it in her hands, completely in awe of it. "she had a love for sea shells, just like you." 

"can i wear it?" she asked, almost pleading with him. even widening her doll-like eyes to maximize the cuteness. even though there was no need. he was going to let her have it, anyway. 

"it's yours to have, my brave wee sea star." he said, smiling at her as he moved a strand of her black hair from her face. "from me, to you." 

i wanted to end the chapter here because it is literally late night and
i have to work in a few hours. but i hope you all like the start of it, so far.
