Chapter Twenty-Seven
The dead could be watching them, waiting for either of them to be alone so the ghosts could whisper. As what James told Mara earlier.
"Do the dead really whisper?" She asked, walking behind Pan.
She heard him chuckling softly. "Are you afraid of ghosts? The dead are nothing, Mara. They hear you, see you and whisper, that's all"
Just say yes, Pan. She wanted to say. James wasn't trying to scare her after all. Wonder why the dead or the ghosts won't move on and just leave to the afterlife or heaven or whatever is on the other side.
"Where are we going this time?" It wasn't pitch black as they walk in the woods, the moon tonight was bright and big, illuminating the woods enough for her to see where she was going.
"I like to walk" Pan said, "it's a good night to walk, don't you think?"
Mara gazed around at the woods, from left to right to the night sky with silhouettes of tall trees. Weather was calm and the air was a little brisk, the woods looked and sounded empty. It was a good night for a walk indeed. "Can't say it's not" she admitted half-heartedly.
She imagined him smiling, or rather smirking while she was walking behind him. "So how was the game?"
Thinking how the game they were playing today, "Wouldn't say it was fun, too much running" she thought of when she and James caught in one of Pan's traps and when she meet Tinker Bell. "We did got caught in one of your traps"
"Which one?"
"At the west, the net, the pear on the ground"
"Oh yeah I know that one, fruits always does the trick for the newbies" he half laughed.
Mara rolled her eyes, weakly smiled. She then thought of the young woman she met today, "I met Tinker Bell, James told me she's a fairy"
"Was" Pan corrected. Mara began to hear waves faintly, they were heading for the shores.
"Was" she repeated, "Why isn't she a fairy anymore then? What happened?"
"Everyone stopped believing in her, that's what happens to fairies, they lose their fairy magic"
"James told me she makes fairy dust for you" she remembered.
"True" He admitted.
As they stepped out of the woods, stepped into the shore, the ground was sandy, it was more bright than in the woods, she could see the horizon, the endless twinkling ocean ahead with the moon reflecting the waters. It looked exactly the same as the dream she had last night. The dream where she danced on this shore while Pan was watching her. Strange dream it was. She certainly won't dance, not ever.
"What?" Pan was staring at her, she didn't realized she had halted, stood still and observing the place.
She glanced at him, "Nothing, just having a little déjà view" she shook her head. It was certainly bright out for the night, she could see Pan's face clearly and reading his expressions. He proceeded walking, walked near the waves and she still followed him. "So how did you find this place? Neverland I mean"
He didn't reply quickly, he took a moment as if he was thinking or trying to recall his distant past. "I didn't find it, it found me, that's all I can tell you"
Surely Pan wasn't exactly the type of person who shares his past, but she was trying, she could just try and get to know him a little. She just wants to know what kind of person she's living with on this island. James shared most of his important past, enough to be her friend, a trusted kind. Even Curly she trusted, and Tootles, and Slightly. "Why never leave Neverland?"
He glanced at her, gave her a strange look as if she was stupid, "Because it's my home" that's all he said.
Mara shrugged, "I assume" she sort of knew he'd say that somehow, "Well, I imagine that you've been here for quite a long time, probably than I imagine, ever thought of leaving this place? Just go out there and see the world?"
He scoffed in response, "Not really, sure I'm curious to see what it's like out there but the world is flawed and ruined and controlled. Wouldn't leave this place where we are free and do whatever we want"
Mara had to admit that he was right about the world. Here in Neverland, never grow old, be away from the world, be free from the power-hungry people and laws. Neverland had only very few problems like rules, the Natives, the mermaids and the future wars but they're easy to dealt with except wars.
She'd ask about his family, but doubted he'd tell her about them, they barely knew each other and just most of the week since arriving here, she hated him and now she didn't hate him. She started not to hate him just yesterday or two days ago.
"Is it true you didn't come here alone?" She remembered what James told her about Pan.
He stopped, turned to the ocean and just stood still as he gazed at the ocean. She made her place at his side, he looked like he was thinking again. "James tells you a lot of things than I thought"
"I ask a lot of questions, that's why" she weakly shrugged.
It was the same smile he flashes everyday, he shook his head a little, "Yes, I didn't come here alone. That's all you need to know"
"You're not much of a sharing person, aren't you?" Mara folded her arms against her chest.
"I'd rather keep my personal history to myself, even if you were trustworthy enough, I still wouldn't be telling you about me"
Before she glanced away, she said, "We'll see" she had her eyes at the ocean while she could see his head turned and looking at her. It was probably the longest time he has ever looked at her and she never returned his gaze.
For the long hour, they stayed in the shore, mostly not speaking to each other, Mara would walk to the left while Pan took the right side. She'd sit on the ground for long moments while the boy was keeping his distance and taking a walk nearby. Mara never had a nice night like this, being on the shore, looking at the ocean, the night was so late as well, despite Pan was near, she felt as if she was alone, it wasn't really a bad feeling, it's one of these moments she needed after what's been happening the past week.
The moon was getting higher, the wind grew and more briskly, that's when Mara wanted to head back to the camp and she was tired enough. Hopefully enough to fall asleep.
"Alright, I think it's time I should call it a night for me" she told Pan.
He nodded in agreement and said nothing. He offered his hand and Mara knew where he was going with it. Either she has to walk all the way back to the camp or just disappear with an instant.
She hesitantly grabbed his hand and with that, she was back in the camp. She nearly stumbled but managed to keep her balance. She had to get used to that transportation. Still, she wasn't alone and Pan was with her.
"Well, thanks for the walk, I guess" she pulled away her hand little awkwardly.
He didn't say anything at first until she was about to walk to her tent. "I enjoyed your company"
She tried to smile but failed to do so, all she said was "Have a good night" she turned.
"Have good dreams, Mara" When she glanced back at him but he was already gone.
Back into her tent, she quietly did so, sat on her hammock and took her boots off. The boys were snoring, mainly Tootles was the loudest, she could tell it was him because the loudest snore was coming from his side of the tent. James, sounded asleep as the rest of them. Mara laid down, took a moment to relax before shutting her eyes.
Long and long moments of her eyes closed, sleep finally came and a good dream came. She dreamt of her mother again, then her father which wasn't about his death this time but the time he taught her how to ride a horse. Then James was in her dream as well, they were both lying down on the meadow as they were watching the sky and saying nothing to each other. Strangely, she dreamt of Pan again in the end.
