Chapter Fifty-Nine
The rest of the Lost Boys came back from the camp, Ace's group and the Twins' group and they found Peter Pan, Felix's group, Thomas's group and James's scattered around the shore, all of them unconscious. Some were floating on the waters and there was fire dancing on the waters but slowly dying.
"Get them out of the water now!" Ace ordered his group and Twins's group. They all hurried to the waters, grabbing those who were floating on the sea and dragging them back to the shore. Ace got Felix to the land, the boy was still breathing slowly. "Felix? Felix!" Ace gave light slaps on the boy's cheeks.
Felix let out soft groans, slowly waking up, Ace looked around and see the rest dragging the rest of the unconscious bodies out of the waters.
Twin One and Two both got Curly, Tootles and Slightly to the land. Twin One checked on Tootles while Twin Two has the other two. Tootles had half of his face burned, terrible burns and half of his cloak was burnt off as well. The poor boy wasn't breathing. "Tootles?" Twin One checked to see if his heart was beating but it wasn't. "Tootles?!" Twin One attempt to revive him.
Meanwhile, Felix, Thomas, Curly and Slightly has woken up, barely. There was another unconscious boy from Felix's group that wasn't waking up either. Curly and Slightly both stumbled to an unconscious Tootles, Twin One has tried, for a long time he had tried to wake him up but the clumsy boy wasn't opening his eyes.
Twin One sighed as he gave up, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I've been trying-"
"No!" Curly pushed Twin One away and he decided to try to bring the boy back himself.
"Curly" Slightly said solemnly.
"He. Can't. Be. Dead!" Curly was pressing his hands on Tootles over and over.
"Curly, he didn't drown" Slightly tried to tell him, "He didn't drown, the blast got him"m
Curly gave up as he sniffled and finally stopped. Tootles. Poor Tootles. Tootles is gone. His long time friend is gone. Slightly and Curly wanted to break down over Tootles but they noticed Mara was missing. She wasn't anywhere in the shore.
There was Pan, slowly waking up to Felix and Thomas at his side. Everyone else were confused and in trauma. Those who were confused were those who weren't at the shore when it happened and those in trauma were the ones that when the ocean exploded.
Two Lost Boys dead already. And war hasn't even started yet. No one saw this coming, not even Pan.
"Where's Turner?!" Curly was yelling, "Where's the girl?!"
No one was responding because she wasn't anywhere in sight.
Neither was James.
"James!" Slightly called, "James!"
Pan was in shock, he never thought something like this would happen, not this soon. It seems Blackbeard may have changed the rules, or breaking all of them.
Curly and Slightly continually called for James and Mara and even searching for them around the shore. But Peter Pan knew, Mara and James are missing, he knew where they are. Blackbeard has them both.
"I can't find James and Mara" Curly approached Pan, "What the bloody hell just happened?!"
Pan was gazing across the sea, gazing at the ships ahead. Mara... Mara... he wasn't sure what he was afraid of, he couldn't help to think that Blackbeard may do harm on her. He needed to do something fast, think of something before anything happens to her. Mara... Mara...
"He has them-" Pan said. "He has them"
Curly and Slightly stared at Pan in shock and both boys felt a strong of apprehension pouring onto them. Curly and Slightly turned their heads and glanced towards the sea. "Wh-What do we do?" Slightly asked in concern, "We know what he'll do"
"Leave that to me, you and the boys need to get ready" Pan left to the woods and quickly made his way to the Mermaid Lagoon.
Back in the ship. Mara woke up, disoriented, her head felt like it had been cracked open, the sharp pang in her head was tremendous that she winced and moaned in pain. She tried not to move her head, not even an inch. She wanted to reach her head but she couldn't.
She couldn't reach her head, she couldn't move her hands, her wrists were tied against some wood, she didn't realized that she was siting until now. She was tied onto a chair, in sort of a room, a lamp was standing on the table in front of her, there was also a leathery roll laying on the table, she could feel the floor moving like the waves going under a ship.
There was someone hanging across the room, hands over their heads, they were tied by a hook that was on a ceiling and their feet not reaching the floor. He didn't have a cloak or a tunic on. But only a sleeveless under garment. He was unconscious.
"James?" Mara gasped out, it's James, he's the one hanging across the room. "James?!"
He wasn't waking up. Mara tried to shake her wrists, pull them and push them around to get the rope loosen. She even thrashed around on her chair, she pulled her wrists up but the rope was too tight, she let out a small cry in frustration.
"I would save my strength if I were you, ma'am" there was a voice somewhere in the room, a cold and a quiet voice. He was heard getting off his chair and footsteps approaching slowly towards Mara. She had seen his shadow before he came into the light. "I won't need to introduce myself, do I?" Blackbeard showed a little smile.
Mara didn't respond, she felt a rush of fear crawling on her skin, she wouldn't dare to look at the man, she kept her eyes at the front and avoid the man's glance.
"I presume that you won't talk, I understand" Blackbeard walked towards James, when he stepped closer to James, Mara felt her arms tensed while she began to fear for James. "That's why I brought him along" Blackbeard reached for James's face while the boy was still unconscious. Blackbeard's hand grabbed James's cheeks, lifting the boy's head up "Has he ever told you about me? I presume you and James are good friends, James has a kindred heart, doesn't he?"
Mara swallowed, swallowing the urge of wanting to speak, the words were in her throat but were swallowed back down, her hands gripped onto the chair's arms.
"He was a very good loyal servant" Blackbeard stated, he began to shake the boy's head to wake him up before letting go of his face. "So, here's what's going to happen-" James was moaning softly as he was waking up slowly while Blackbeard approached the table, he untied the leather roll before unrolling it and revealed various tools. Tools like how mad men use to torture people. Mara got even more tensed. "You will tell me your name, you will tell me why you're here, why Peter kept you here, what your purpose is... you remain quiet- well, that's a surprise" he smiled. The smile wasn't even a smirk, not even a contemptuous one, but oddly a kind smile. Mara never thought she'd find a kind smile so frightening.
She may knew what will happened if she doesn't answer the questions. James woke up, he was immediately startled to find where he was, and even expressed a panicked look as he began to kick his legs, trying to pull himself up, trying to flail his hands off the hook. Mara wanted to tell him to calm so terribly and it already hurt her to see him so scared.
"Nice to see you again, James" Blackbeard greeted, "I've missed you"
James let out sharp breaths as he expressed a fearful look, Mara could feel the fear rising from the boy.
"So, James-" Blackbeard pulled a small knife from the tool bag and approached the boy. Mara fidgeted as she tensed up more. "Tell me about your dear friend here, what's her name? I am mildly curious"
James didn't respond. His eyes met with Mara's, she wanted to tell him that it was okay to say her name. She gave him a light nod, telling him it was okay to tell. But James didn't answer at all despite Mara's consent. His eyes now stared at Blackbeard.
The man sighed disappointedly, "You children, don't be foolish now" he glanced back at Mara, "you still don't want to speak?" Again, she remained quiet and still while her muscles tensed. "Want to see what happens to him?"
Mara's breath was caught when Blackbeard moved and went behind James. She watched James's look turning into a flinch and concern look as Blackbeard grabbed the boy and spun him around. "I don't know if you had seen them-" Blackbeard pulled up the boy's shirt over his shoulder and revealed dozens of scars. Long ones, thick ones, small ones, too many to tell how many they are but it stunned Mara. She never saw them, neither ever he had mentioned them but she knew Blackbeard tortured him before. Yet she was never aware that he had left scars on the boy. "Seeing the way you look, I'll say you haven't" he let go of James.
She couldn't tell how James must be feeling, there was hint of shame on his look.
"So... let's begin-" Blackbeard stayed behind James, "what is your name?"
For some reason, Mara felt a knife against her back, imagining the knife pressing against James back by Blackbeard, she felt the chills and the skin crawling. That was exactly what James was feeling, he could feel the knife touching his back, ready to be pressed then slide.
"Still nothing?" Blackbeard knitted his brows together.
He was pressing the knife onto James's skin, when Mara saw him flinching, she uttered out "Mara!"
Blackbeard peered over James with a questioning look, "What was that?"
Mara paused before replying, "It's Mara. My name is Mara Turner"
"Mara Turner" Blackbeard repeated. "Good-" he still had the knife's tip against James's middle back. "Okay, now tell me why you're here and why Peter kept you here"
Mara had to lie, she had to, he can't know that she's supposedly save Peter, about the prophecy, she assumed that Blackbeard doesn't know about it. "I'm just like every Lost Boy" she lied, "I was lost once but then Neverland found me. I was unloved and unwanted but then I found this place"
Blackbeard craned his neck as he scrunched his nose. James began to flinch as he began to groan out in pain. His face tensed as he fisted his hands. "I know that's a lie, Mara Turner. I know Peter than you think. He'd never let some girl stay in Neverland and become a Lost Girl, unless they are special, or that they have a purpose here."
"I don't know!" Mara uttered, "I don't know, I don't know why Peter kept me here"
Blackbeard tilted his head, "Peter?" He said with a curious voice. "You know, Peter doesn't usually like anyone who calls him by his first name. Unless they are close with him, or they once knew him... the only people that call him by that name is myself, and Tiger Lily"
Mara let out a sharp breath as she lowered her head. She couldn't help it, she was getting too scared for James and said Peter's name without thinking.
"So, why are you here?" Blackbeard asked again.
Mara hesitated. She couldn't respond. She didn't want to, if she does tell him, then she and the Lost Boys and everyone else will lose and Blackbeard wins.
James began to cry out as Blackbeard began to slide the knife slowly from the middle back towards one of the shoulders. Mara can't take it. She tells him, she dies then Peter dies as well and so everyone else. She dies, and she can't save Peter Pan. Blackbeard learns of her purpose, then there's a chance that he'll kill her so she won't save Peter Pan. "I'm supposed to save him" she muttered.
Blackbeard stopped and James gasped out from the pain.
"What was that?" Blackbeard asked.
Mara didn't respond for a moment. She let out a doleful sigh before she replied, "I'm supposed to save him... I'm here because I'm meant to be here... I- I'm meant to save Peter, I'm suppose to save his life, I don't know how, I really don't know how, please. Please, that's all I know. Please don't hurt James anymore" she begged tearfully.
Blackbeard's mouth agape as he seemed to be surprised by her response. "Interesting" Blackbeard finally moved away from James, he went to the table and put the knife back. "So... how much as Peter told you about me? Just a friendly conversation from now on" Blackbeard grabbed another chair from the corner then sat down at the table with Mara.
She was almost afraid that it might be her next for him to torture. If she told him what she knows about Blackbeard, would he be angry?
"I'm just curious" Blackbeard expressed a that frightening kind smile again as he looked at her. "I'm sure Peter has told you a lot about me, otherwise you wouldn't be here. You must be special to him"
Mara's eyes fell closed for a moment as she let out a sigh. She looked at James, he looked almost weak but he was still conscious and yet, looked sleepy. "I know your name is not Blackbeard. I know your name is Bishop and you were a Lost Boy once"
Blackbeard didn't look angry at all. He merely raised his brows. "And that is all?"
Mara tried to remember. "I know you betrayed him. You took Neverland's heart and because of you, he's dying"
"I betrayed him?" Blackbeard uttered then scoffed. He laughed softly, "Oh dear Peter still has a habit of lying"
Mara furrowed her brows.
"No, no, no, Mara" Blackbeard lightly shook his head. "He was the one who betrayed me first... My... own... brother betrayed me"
Something struck her in her chest, a massive shock hit her. James's look was the same as Mara's.
"He never told you that, didn't he?" Blackbeard smirked again. It's that smirk that she found so familiar. It had hit her when she finally realized why Blackbeard looked so familiar. "Yes, dear children... Peter Pan is my brother"
