Chapter Fifteen

She had a dream where she arrived the town of Camelot, she never been there but it was one of the places she wanted to go to. Mara was standing near the castle before hearing a boy's voice and interrupted her dream.

"Get up, girl"

Her eyes opened slowly, barely lifting her heavy eyes, she fluttered her eyes and saw only a brown wall of a tent. Someone nudged her shoulder from behind, she shifted her head and found James standing beside her.

"It's wake up time, breakfast soon" James smiled a little.

Mara grumbled as she turned her head back. Not feeling of getting up to start her forth day being in Neverland. Only the forth day. Only ten days, fifty days, hundred days, thousand days or forever days left. She had little hope of leaving Neverland one day, Gods only know when that day will come, perhaps never, that's why the place is called Neverland.

When it was time to break her fast, cup of chopped fruits and two eggs on a plate. Least Neverland had better food than she had in various place she's been to. Peter Pan doesn't seem to be eating, he sat near the bonfire with Felix and Thomas, with only an apple in his hand and not bother to eat it. Mara had not left James's side since wake up time, they were joined by their tent-mates duration of breakfast.

"I didn't know girls can snore" Curly chewed.

What's wrong with girls snoring? She gazed at the curly blond hair boy and gave him a strange look. "They're humans like you, I'm human too in case you didn't know that. It's not like we're different species"

Curly said nothing.

"So what's happening today?" She turned to James.

"Hunt, train, hike, swim, play games or who knows, Pan intends to surprise us, he'll tell us any moment" James seems he couldn't care less what's happening today, "I wouldn't worry about it"

"I'm not worried, I'm only wondering" she ate the last egg before finishing. She had to admit, she was worried a little only about training, they say they train almost everyday and Pan promised her that every training, she's going to have to fight Thomas until she beats him. She was a sloppy fighter, lack of training, lack of experience in fights, she didn't train enough with Captain Hook during the expedition in the sea the past month.

"What do you exactly do, Mara?" Curly asked suddenly who sat near the two, "when you were out there, what do you do?"

"I travel" she shrugged, "a lot actually, since I was fourteen"

"What about your dad and mum?" Tootles tilted his head beside Curly as he glanced at her, "They still out there?"

"My dad died fighting in a war when I was little" she told him, "my mum died when I was born, a friend of dad's took me in who passed when I was thirteen and since then I've been on my own"

No one has said anything, Slightly who sat beside James hadn't said anything but could tell he has been listening. Mara wondered about their parents or how these boys wind up in Neverland, but she knew of James already but not of his past beside being a cabin boy.

"What about you?" She asked them, "Your parents?"

"Ah, my dad left me while I was still my mum's womb" Curly began, there wasn't a hint of sadness in his voice or expression, only with confidence which Mara found odd. "And my mum left me in some old lady's hands and never came back. I was six that time"

Mara gazed at Curly, still no sign of any sorrow from him and gave him a strange look.

"Don't feel sorry for me, it was ninety-six years ago, it's all ancient now" he smiled, not with joy but Mara could tell he had moved on long time ago.

She found it strange when he said 'it was ninety-six years ago', Curly could be over a hundred years old by now. Her mouth was opened as she looked away, a little in processing.

"Alright boys!" A loud voice rang across the camp, Pan had gotten up from his seat and and gazed at every boy around camp before laying his eyes on Mara, "...and girl. Let's begin our day with playing a game. A competition sort"

Competition, Mara hated any competition and she was always bad at them. Especially challenging against dozens of boys.

"All of you will split into five teams, your team are your tent-mates, and the game is you and your team will try and retrieve a flag which are attached on four boars"

Could it be that difficult? Mara wondered because there were multiple times she had hunted boars since she spent traveling through jungles, forests, mountains since she was fourteen, she wondered if she can still manage to track a boar.

"Only four teams will win, and one team loses, believe me you do not want to lose, you know it's not going to be pretty. So I suggest you get moving before the flags run out"

With that, every Lost Boy had gotten on their feet, picked up their weapons with a hurry along James, Tootles, Curly and Slightly.

"Come on, little arseling" Curly nudged Mara to move, "You're on our team, remember?"

She scowled at him about calling her arseling. She moved anyway, she grabbed her sword, strapped the belt around her hip, noticed Pan glancing at her while she was ready, she only returned her gaze for a second before leaving the camp with her tent-mates.

Curly was leading the way with Slightly behind them, she was right at Tootles's tail as they jogged. They were running a random direction like the rest of the team, trying to find any animal tracks. Mara thought of what Pan said about losing, and wonder what was the prize for the losing team.

They had a stop at the stream to fill up their canteens, they weren't the only team who stopped there, there was Felix's team there.

"No doubt they'd catch one" Tootles murmured as he closed the lit of his canteen, "They always win"

"We're not that bad" Curly said, "good thing I'm good at tracking a damn pig"

"A boar" Slightly corrected, "There's a difference"

"So what, smarty pants?" Curly rolled his eyes.

"I can track a boar too" Mara announced.

The four boys looked at her, all with doubtful looks, Curly scoffed then laughed.

"Like I said, I travelled a lot, I hunted along the way, all of them I catch them with traps, maybe we got a bigger chance of retrieving a flag if we split up?" Mara stood up, "If you boys want, I'm only suggesting"

None of the boys said anything, Curly was looking over at the boys as he was waiting for any of them to say something. "You sure you know how to track?" James questioned.

"Can't say I'm the best tracker there ever was but I sure know how to track a boar. I can only find one, but can't kill it because I'm a lousy shooter with a bow and arrow"

"Felix's team has two trackers and they split up, that's how they always win" Slightly commented, "I say we split"

"Alright then" James agreed, "Slightly, you go with Curly. Tootles and I go with the girl"

"Neither of you would able to shoot down the animal, can you?" Curly stated.

"That includes you, that's why Slightly is going with you" James pulled off a cloth off the top staff which revealed to be pointy and sharp. "I'm sure Slightly can shoot it distantly, can you, boy?"

Slightly smiled a little and nodded.

"Let's get going then" with that, Curly and Slightly ran to a different direction as the rest jogged the opposite direction.

The first hour passed, mostly during the hour they jogged around the jungle looking for animal tracks, mostly Mara found shoe prints from the Lost Boys, from today and yesterday prints. They'd jog until one is breathless, mostly it was Tootles who was tired most of the time, it almost surprised Mara. Sometimes the boy fell and tripped on his own feet.

When Mara questioned Tootles's clumsiness, "I'm cursed, that's why" he answered.

Around the second hour, they finally found a set of animal prints, Mara could tell they were boar tracks, they were near the Cove as she followed the prints with two boys behind her. But around half hour later, they found the animal only to be already caught by Thomas's team. Found them in the middle of victory.

Mara and the boys were surely disappointed, that leaves three more flags or maybe two more or one more. "But how can we tell if the rest were retrieved?" She asked.

"Pan will inform us, he'd find us right away if the game is over" Tootles muttered.

Mara was jittery at the third hour, arrived near the mountain and aimed to the west. They found fresh boar tracks, she followed them, found more and the fresher they got, the close they got.

She crouched down to examine the print, "Its close" she announced, she found a trail of twigs being knocked down and followed with caution. They were a step away from winning the game. A few moments later as they drew forward, that's when they heard an animal snort nearby.

She halted, and so did the boys. She heard it ahead, maybe fifteen feet ahead, she signalled James where the boar was, she even gestured him to proceed quietly. He went on with a spear readied in his hand, they did spot the bushes moving, it was just behind the plants.

As Mara moved quietly behind James, they spotted the animal, there was the white cloth tied around one of it's legs which no doubt it was a flag. James raised his spear over his shoulder, the animal was so distracted as it was eating something until a twig snapped behind Mara. She whipped her head back and see Tootles gritting his teeth then gazed down at his feet. He had stepped on a twig.

That's when the boar squealed in panic and might've spotted the three children then ran off. James quickly threw his spear only to missed it by an inch as it retreated away.

"Bugger!" James exclaimed and went to chase it. Mara followed, he had grabbed his spear while sprinting.

She pulled out her sword while chasing the boar, she could see it ahead but barely. They were close, so close of winning, she could not lose the flag so she sprinted as fast as she could. James was faster than her, almost running ahead of her.

There was a small opening ahead where she could see the boar clearly, it ran into the opening and kept running forward. James cussed out in his breath before raising his spear, he threw it then stopped as he entered the opening. This time the spear made it's home on the back at the right side, it uttered in pain as it kept running.

Mara continually chased it and passed James, he was yelling at her "No! Mara, stop!"

All she could think was getting the flag and that's why she sprinted after it. James was yelling at her to stop, but when Mara was running, she then felt some sort of a force yanking her and threw her backward about ten feet back.

Pain struck her back when she landed, she winced and groaned as she laid there for a moment. Then James was beside her, kneeling down and unexpectedly, there was Peter Pan behind him.

"He told you to stop" Pan said.

She immediately suspected it was Pan that threw her back. "What--" she uttered breathlessly, "--what the hell...was that?!"

"You nearly crossed the line" Pan told her.

"What line?!" She had her elbows on the ground behind her.

Then there was rustling noises ahead. Mara gazed forward as both boys looked ahead as well. First, she saw a man, wearing only brown pants, his body and face were all painted with strange designs, he bore two tomahawks and he had a stern look on his face as he approached them but only to stop where Mara was thrown off from. Another person appeared, jumped from a tree, this one looked like an eldest boy of eighteen, similar garments and paints and he bore a bow with an arrow readied. Another came, a young man, then there was a girl who seemed to be at Mara's age. All of them had dark as raven hairs.

Natives, Mara realized.
