34. come home

"Where are you guys? I thought you said you were heading West?" Monty's slightly unnerved voice came through the radio that was clutched in Bellamy's hand.

Bellamy brought the device up to his mouth, his eyes darting around as he spoke quietly, "Just keep the moon on your left and you'll find us."

My hands were shaking as I readjusted my grip on the gun in my hands. After I had informed Bellamy about Finn, Clarke and Myles' failure to return to camp, a group of us including Raven, Octavia, and Monty had set back out in search of the trio. It was more dangerous than before due to the lack of light but we all knew we needed to find them as soon as possible. If the Grounders were willing to torture Murphy and I before we were even at war, there was no telling what they would do to my brother and our friends.

I moved closer to Bellamy as an odd sound began emitting from the radio. "Is anyone else hearing the signal?" Monty asked, clearly on edge.

"Just keep your eyes open" Raven instructed over the walkie her and Octavia had taken with them.

"I think it's the same thing we heard in the blackbox." Monty continued pushing, trying to bring concern upon the rest of us.

Bellamy quickly rose the walkie to his mouth, "Damnit Monty, pay attention."

I looked over at Bellamy, taking a moment to listen to the signal Monty was on about. "Bellamy, Monty's right, there's something off about it."

Bellamy glanced at me, "It's nothing." he dismissed before brining the walkie back to his lips, "Monty, do you see anything? Report."

Bellamy received no answer from Monty, only an increase in volume of the signal came through the small radio.

Raven's voice came through next, low and urgent, "There's someone in the bushes."

I was practically on top of Bellamy as the two of us moved towards the bushes Raven was referring to. The girls and us had not strayed too far from each other meaning we were in close parameters to the bush in question.

"Stay behind me." Bellamy instructed as he raised his gun, slowly inching towards the bush. I did as he said with no arguments. Pure fear surged through my blood as I layed eyes on Raven and Octavia who approached the bush with their guns raised.

As Raven pulled back the greenery she let out a gasp, "Myles?"

Bellamy and I shared a look before rushing forward to see Myles laying on the ground, a arrow sticking from his chest.

I gasped as I fell to my knees beside the boy, instantly tearing a piece from my shirt to wrap around his wound, "Where are they Myles?" I asked as I secured the bandage, "Where's my brother?"

Myles gasped in pain as he looked up with tired eyes. He open his mouth to speak but only ragged breaths came out.

"Myles please." I begged, my hands now shaking and covered in his blood as I raised them to brush a stray piece of hair from my face.

Myles forced out a breath as he closed his eyes, "G-Grounders."

All of my fears were confirmed as the words left his mouth. I fell back from my position on my knees, landing in a sitting position. I dropped my head into my hands as tears filled my eyes.

Octavia knelt down beside Myles and I, looking over to me with a sympathy filled look before diverting her attention back to Myles.

Raven's voice was shaky as she spoke, "We need to make a stretcher" she announced before walking away to find the material we would need.

I looked up when I felt Bellamy place his jacket over my shoulders, "Avery we need to go, we have to get Myles back to camp."

I wiped the tears from my eyes, pushing myself onto my feet, "I'm staying out here" I told him, pulling my arms through his jacket so it was securely on.

Bellamy shook his head firmly, "No, you're not. We need to get back to camp and reassess, okay? It's not safe out here".

"They'll die if we don't find them!" I argued, "Look at Myles, do you think they're being any easier on Clarke and Finn?"

Bellamy let out a sigh as he raised the radio to his mouth, "Monty, we're heading back to camp."

"Don't ignore me Bellamy," I snapped, taking a step closer to him, "Finn is my brother and I am going to look for him."

Bellamy turned away from me, "Monty, report!" he waited a few moments and after receiving no response he spoke again, "Monty!?"

My anger at Bellamy turned into a new worry over Monty, "Where is he?" I asked.

Bellamy stared back at me, "I don't know, but we have to get back to camp now before we're next. If you don't want to come with us by your own free will, I will carry you back to camp and that's a promise."

I ran a hand over my face as a shaky sigh slipped from my lips, "Okay, I'm coming."

I wanted nothing more than to stay out and look for my brother and Finn but Bellamy was right, the only thing that staying out here right now would do would be the rest of using getting killed.

---

That night back at camp everyone was on high alert. Raven was setting up landmines and I was helping her, but I was more distracted with watching the forest line, hoping and praying that Finn and Clarke would walk through it.

"Here," Raven muttered, handing me a piece of wire. I took the wire without saying a word to her, and she read into that, "About the thing earlier, I'm sorry. I didn't know you and Bellamy were-"

I scrunched up my face as I cut her off, "Bellamy and I were what?"

Her face fell, "Well the way he chased after you, I just thought that you two were- y'know."

I exhaled as I shook my head, "Bellamy and I are nothing. Besides, I have more important things to worry about right now. Everything is fine with us, Raven, just like always."

She gave me a small smile as she nodded her head, "And hey, Finn will be okay, he always is"

I didn't answer her because I didn't know if I agreed. That was just something people said to calm the other person down, it wasn't always true.

"Better hope those landmines work," Bellamy commented as he approached the two of us, "With all the gun powder we're wasting we could be making more grenades."

I had my back to him but rolled my eyes. Raven was clearly annoyed by his comments too, "You want to come over here and test one?" she offered.

"Cute." Bellamy muttered, "We need this entire space mined by morning. Then, the south field."

Raven stood up, "I told you we were going after Finn, Monty and Clarke in the morning."

I followed after her, joining her in front of Jasper, "I told you, nobody leaves this camp." Bellamy shot back.

"We can't just leave them out there!" I argued, following after him as he began to to walk away.

"We don't abandon our people!" Raven added, "You want to lead them? Show them you give a damn"

Bellamy stared between the two of us, only taking his eyes off of us when a shot rang out from the guard post closest to us. We all looked over to see one of the boys, Sterling, being startled awake.

"Hey!" Bellamy shouted as he began marching over to the boy, "What the hell is the matter with you?"

Sterling looked at Bellamy apologetically, "I'm sorry man I fell asleep, I've been on watch all day."

Bellamy took him by the collar, pushing him up against the post, "We've all been on watch all day! That bullet was one less dead Grounder" he yelled.

I made my way towards the two boys, stepping in between them as pushing Bellamy off, "Bellamy, it was a mistake." I whispered, standing in front of Sterling so Bellamy couldn't get back at him.

"You're scaring people." Octavia said quietly so to avoid everyone hearing.

Bellamy turned to look at her, "They should be scared!" he shot back, turning from Sterling and I to look at the rest of the members of camp, "The bomb on the bridge bought us some time but that time is up! The Grounders are out there right now, waiting for us to leave and picking us off one by one when we do! Clarke, Finn and Monty are gone, probably dead. And if you want to be next, I can't stop you. But no guns are leaving this camp! This camp is the only thing keeping us alive." He let out a puff of air, throwing his arm up in frustration, "Get back to work!"

I stared at him, anger boiling inside me at his utter refusal to make any effort to find Clarke, Monty and Finn. He turned to look at me, his face flushed from yelling.

I glared at him, "When Octavia was out there you wanted as many people as you could out there looking for her."

Bellamy clenched his jaw, "It was different then, we weren't at war, same as when you went missing."

"I can't just sit here and pretend that my brother isn't missing." I argued.

"You're not going out there Avery. You go out there and you die and there is no way I am letting that happen." he said firmly.

I shook my head, "You just told everyone that if they wanted to go out there they could!"

He stared at me, "But that didn't apply to you." he didn't let me get another word in before he stalked off somewhere else in camp leaving me standing alone with Sterling who had just watched that whole ordeal.

I turned to Sterling with a forced smile, "Here, I'll take guard, you go get some sleep."

He nodded gratefully as he handed me the gun before rushing off to his tent. I sat down at the post, holding the gun tightly in my hand, preparing myself for a long night. There was no way I was going to get any sleep before so this was a way to keep my mind busy.

As I stared out into the forest all I could think about was Finn, well that and a way that I could sneak out of here come morning.
