18. hold on
Hot tears blurred my vision as we neared camp, all of us letting out a small sigh of relief as the manmade walls came into view. Finn, who had been too weak to walk was now being carried by Bellamy and had gone unconscious about halfway from camp.
As we reached the gates, Jasper and Octavia went ahead, Jasper calling for help, "Clarke! Someone get Clarke right now!"
Clarke came running towards us, "What's wrong?" she asked, her eyes landing on me, her face falling when she saw my expression. I slowly turned my head, moving her gaze from me towards the gates where Bellamy had just walked through, Finn limp in his arms.
"Finn!" Clarke gasped, "Finn, oh my God." she cried, as the whole camp began milling around us, everyone letting out shocked gasps.
A few other boys rushed to help Bellamy as Clarke reached a shaky hand forward, feeling for Finn's pulse, "He's still alive."
Raven, who had just arrived at the scene, grabbed onto my arm, letting out a small cry, "Oh my God."
The minute I looked over at her, the tears stared again. I tried to speak, but no words came out as Raven pulled me into a tight hug.
"Bellamy wouldn't let me take the knife out." Jasper explained from behind us.
"That was a good call." Clarke backed up Bellamy. She was flustered as she looked at Finn, trying to figure out what to do. "Get him into the Dropship. Now! Go!" she instructed, letting out a few quick breaths. She was panicking, which wasn't making me feel good about her being able to save my brother.
"Clarke!" Raven called, lightly moving past me to approach the blonde girl, "Can you do it? Can you save him."
Clarke shook her head, fighting for words, "Not me. I need my mother."
My heart dropped, Clarke's mother was still up on the Ark, and as far as I knew, we still had not made contact with them.
Raven confirmed my assumption, "There's still no radio." she announced, throwing her hands up to her head in frustration.
"Raven! Fix it, go!" Clarke instructed, her words prompting Raven to hurry back toward the Dropship.
I watched as Raven ran past me, but I couldn't move. I knew if I went in that Dropship I would see my brother laying there, almost lifeless and I wasn't sure I could handle that. I felt my breathing speed up as everyone around me began moving. I felt like I was going to throw up, or collapse, or—
"Avery." Bellamy was in front of me, his dark eyes scanning my face. "Avery, take a deep breath."
My eyes flickered up toward him, as if I had just been pulled from a different world. Hesitantly, I took a deep breath, trying to force my breathing back into a routine.
Bellamy gave a small nod, still watching me with intensity. "Good." He praised, taking a deep breath himself as if to show me what to do. "Again."
I did as he said, taking a few more deep breaths, the air filling my lungs, my heart rate slowly slightly.
Glancing over his shoulder, Bellamy nodded toward the Dropship. "Get inside." He instructed, "Your brother will need you."
I looked at him through red-rimmed eyes. "I don't know if I can." I admitted, not being able to picture seeing my brother that close to death. I didn't care how weak that made me sound when it was the truth.
"You can." He promised. "He needs you. Go."
Reluctantly, I took a step away from him, making my way back toward the ship where my brother had been taken. A million thoughts rushed through my head, the most prominent being the fact that Finn could already be dead by the time I reached him.
The moment I entered the ship, I was might with a sight I was dreading, but not the worst case scenario.
Finn was laid on one of the tables. He was pale, torso bloodied...but he was still breathing.
I stopped at the entrance, giving myself a moment to catch my breath.
"It's okay." Clarke said softly, arriving next to me. "You can go sit with him."
I glanced over at her, pushing down the tears as I nodded. Finn needed me right now, and I needed to be there for him, just like Bellamy said.
I moved towards him, letting out a shaky breath as I grabbed a stool, sitting down beside him.
His limp hand was cold in my own, causing a chill to run through my body. I gave it a small squeeze, letting him know I was there, even though it was likely he had no idea.
A few minutes after I had sat down most of the camp came rushing into the drop ship, crowding up the limited space we had.
"What's going on?" I asked, standing up from my spot beside Finn.
"Huge storm's coming." A boy answered, pointing outside where the trees were violently beginning to sway, the sky already shades darker than it had been when we'd arrived back at camp.
I looked over to Raven and Clarke in worry. If a storm was coming that meant getting through to the Ark would be that much more difficult.
Raven returned the worried look, quickly brushing it off and turning back to the radio, working to get it up and running.
Octavia soon came rushing into the drop ship as well, her eyes instantly landing on me. She pushed through the crowd, arriving beside me.
"Hey, Aves." She whispered, crouching down beside me, taking one of my hands in her own.
"Hey." I returned, my voice barely audible.
"How are you doing?" She asked, her face full of sympathy.
I shrugged, not really too sure as to how to answer her, "I can't lose him Tavia. He's the only family I have left."
Octavia nodded as she pulled me into a hug, "Clarke will save him." She assured. "But you'll always have me. You know that, right."
The tears escaped now as I weakly wrapped my arms back around her, watching as the storm outside intensified. "I know."
The sound of Raven trying to get through to the Ark and the loud wind outside filled my ears as I pulled away from Octavia, giving her a forced smile to let her know I was going to be okay.
Clarke approached the two of us, giving me a small smile as she took the cloth that was wrapped around Finn's injury away, revealing a bloody mess. I felt a pang in my stomach as she continued working, replacing the bloody cloth with a new one.
Raven continued on in the background. She was having no luck, only static coming through.
Until—
"This is a restricted channel, who is this? Please identify yourself." A voice came through the radio causing me to spring up from my seat and move towards where Raven was. For the first time since Finn had been stabbed I had some hope.
Raven's face lit up in what appeared to be hopefulness. "This is Raven Reyes. I'm from Meca Station. I-I'm transmitting from the ground. The One Hundred are alive. Please, you need to get Dr. Abby Griffin." Raven announced into the speaker.
A few moments passed and we heard nothing from the Ark. Panic flooded my body, worried that we had lost the signal.
Luckily, another voice finally came through, "Raven? Raven are you there? It's Abby."
At the sound of Abby's voice I let out a sigh of relief. I rushed back towards Finn's bedside, sitting down beside him as Clarke took the radio to speak to her mother.
"It's going to be okay Finn. Clarke has her mother on the radio, she can save you. You're going to be okay." I mumbled, pushing a piece of hair from his face.
Clarke soon joined me by Finn's bedside, her mother still speaking to us from the radio. The storm outside shook the Dropship with every gust of wind causing everyone to let out panic screams.
"I'm going to talk you through it step by step." Abby called. As she went to say something else, the radio began to cut out.
Clarke scrunched up her face in frustration. "What!?" she yelled, walking back towards Raven.
"Raven what's going on?" she demanded.
"It's not the radio, it's the storm." Raven explained, trying to fix the problem in any way she could.
Clarke raised her hands to her head in panic as she paced back and forth, "Okay we're just going to have to work with what we have." she announced, rejoining me beside Finn.
She began gathering supplies as Octavia walked in with two thermoses of something to sanitize our hands with.
As she handed them to Clarke, the blonde girl opened them and sniffed, "Monty's moonshine?" she almost gagged.
"Pretty sure no germ can survive it." Octavia confirmed.
Another loud bang shook the ship, "The storm's getting worse." Clarke observed as she poured the moonshine into a bowl, "Monroe, close the doors."
"We still have people out there." Monroe argued.
"Monty and Jasper still aren't back yet," Octavia pointed out, "Neither is Bellamy."
"It's alright, they'll find a place to ride it out." Clarke ensured.
"Where did they go?" I asked, standing up from my seat to join the other girls.
Octavia shrugged, "I have no idea, Bell said he had something to deal with."
"One suture needle." Raven announced, holding out her hand to give Clarke the needle that she had been assigned to gather.
"We still need something to close the wound." Clarke said, looking around for something.
"There's some wire on the upper level," I announced, "Octavia and I used it for the tents."
Clarke nodded, "Let's see it."
"I'll go get it." Octavia offered, moving towards the ladder.
Raven turned towards her, "Stay away from the blue wires that run through the ceiling. I rigged it to the solar cells in the roof."
Octavia gave a slight nod, not really acknowledging what Raven said.
"That means they're hot!" Raven called as Octavia mounted the ladder.
"Yeah, yeah I got it." Octavia mumbled.
Once Octavia was out of sight Raven turned to Clarke, "Tell me you can do this."
Clarke looked up from what she was doing to meet eyes with Raven, she was about to speak when someone cut her off, "Hey they're back!" a girl yelled, pulling all of our eyes to the entrance of the ship.
I felt myself let out a sigh of relief I didn't know I had been holding as Bellamy walked inside, drenched from the rain.
"Bellamy!" Octavia called as she climbed down from the ladder, her eyes widening as she looked behind Bellamy. My own relief soon turned to shock as I came to realize why he had left camp in the first place.
Behind him, two boys carried the Grounder who had stabbed Finn, blindfolded and bloody.
I felt my breath catch in my throat in both terror that he was here and shock. Why would Bellamy bring him here?
"What the hell are you doing?" Octavia snapped, jumping down from the ladder to approach her brother. I moved towards them as well, my eyes locked on the Grounder, afraid he was about to spring up and stab someone else.
Bellamy locked eyes with his sister, "It's time to get some answers."
Octavia let out a scoff, "You mean revenge?"
"I mean intel." Bellamy snipped back, turning away from Octavia to nod towards the ladder, "Get him upstairs." he ordered to the boys who had carried the Grounder in.
I pushed my way through the group so I was closer to Bellamy, "Octavia's right Bellamy, you—"
I was cut off by Abby Griffin's voice coming through the radio, "Clarke, honey, we're ready. Can you hear me?" Clarke perked up at her mother's voice, her eyes meeting mine as she turned to tend to Finn.
"This isn't who we are. It's not who you are." I continued, my eyes locked with Bellamy's who stared down at me.
Bellamy shook his head, "It is now. Go take care of your brother. I've got this handled." he muttered before turning and walking away.
