Our feet crunched against the forest floor as we ran in pursuit of Roma. We resisted the urge to call out for her, knowing that if we did it would only lead the Grounders right to us. I had wrapped my arm around Jasper once again, helping him keep up with the rest of the group.
It had only been a few minutes when we slowed down, Monroe pointing to a tree ahead of us, "There she is." she acknowledged, drawing my eyes to where Roma was standing, slightly hidden behind a tree so all we could see was one of her arms.
"Roma!" Monroe whispered, letting her know that it was us. When Roma didn't move we all shared a look of confusion. Bellamy took the lead, the rest of us hesitantly following behind him to see what was going on.
As we approached, it soon became obvious why she hadn't responded to us. The large spear sticking out of her chest had rendered her unable to do so.
I felt my heart drop as I turned my head, not wanting to look any longer. Monroe let out a small gasp as her eyes fell to the ground.
"They're playing with us." Finn announced, looking around the forest, Jasper doing the same thing, his eyes looked as wide as saucers.
I looked up just in time to see Bellamy closing Roma's eyes, a guilty look on his face, "She only came because of me." he whispered.
"They can kill us anytime they want." Finn said, trying to figure out what game the Grounders were playing here.
"Then they should GET IT OVER WITH!" Jasper began screaming, "COME ON!"
"Jasper!" I snapped as Finn and I rushed over to try and make him stop, "Jasper, stop it!" I pleaded.
"Someone shut him up!" Bellamy ordered.
But no matter what Finn or I said, Jasper's screaming had already done its damage. Within seconds, it became apparent that the Grounders had heard him.
"They're coming!" Monroe yelled in horror.
I turned away from Jasper to see Grounders running at us from all sides.
A small gasp fell from my lips. This was it, we were all done for now. There was no way we could make it out of here alive.
Knowing it was our only hope of lasting as long as we could, we all moved closer to each other, backs to one another as we held on tightly to our weapons, ready to fight for as long as we could. I stayed close to my brother, my back pressed up against the back of Bellamy who was standing firm, holding his ground.
But before they could reach us, a sudden noise filled the forest...it was some sort of horn.
At the sound of the horn the Grounders took off running in the other direction, causing all of us to let out a small sigh of relief, "They're leaving." Bellamy observed.
"That horn," Jasper started, "What does it mean?"
"Acid fog." Finn whispered, causing my heart to drop. It was acid fog that had ambushed us that day we were hunting, the day Atom died. Bellamy and I shared a nervous look, we knew what this fog was capable of.
"We have to run." Monroe concluded, looking over at Finn who was pulling a tent from his pack.
"There's no time." he announced, fanning out the tent in front of the group of us, "Get under." he ordered, pointing to the fabric.
All of us looked at each other, unsure if a tent could protect us from the fog, "Come on, it's our only hope right now!" Finn said, sensing the hesitation among us. We did as he said, agreeing that this was our only chance at survival.
As we ducked under the fabric I immediately became claustrophobic. I was wedged in between Finn and Bellamy, Jasper and Monroe on the other sides of them. All you could hear was our deep breathing as we waited and prayed that the tent would keep us safe.
Ten minutes had past, and nothing had happened. Jasper was the first to address the waiting. "How long are we supposed to wait?"
"Will this even work?" Monroe added.
Finn looked down the line at them, "I guess we'll find out."
"No, we won't" Bellamy grumbled, swiftly lifting the tent off of himself. I felt fear rush my body, terrified that the fog was about to engulf him, but it didn't.
"There's no fog." he announced, which resulted in the rest of us pushing the tent from off of ourselves.
"Maybe it was a false alarm." Finn suggested, his eyes darting around.
I let out a sigh, "So you're telling me I just had to spend ten minutes crammed in between you and Bellamy for no reason?" I mumbled, causing Finn to jokingly roll his eyes at me.
"Look," Bellamy said, ignoring my complaints, "They're coming back." he pointed to a Grounder who was running for the forest. I looked around, expecting to see more of them, but I could only see the one.
"It's just him." I observed, causing everyone to look over at me, "I think he's alone."
"Now can we run?" Monroe asked.
Bellamy ignored her demand, "He doesn't see us, I'm going after him."
"And what? Finn questioned, "Kill him?"
"No," Bellamy said, his eyes still fixed on the lone Grounder, "Catch him, make him tell me where Octavia is, then kill him." he explained, pushing himself off the ground, in pursuit of the Grounder.
"How do we know he's not leading us into another trap?" Jasper asked, voicing the same thing most of us were thinking.
"We don't." Finn answered.
"We can't let him go alone." I said, my eyes locked on Bellamy who was making him way through the forest, getting further and further away from us.
"I know," Finn said, standing up and beginning to gather up the tent, "That's why we're going with him."
---
Once we had caught up with Bellamy, we had spent close to twenty minutes following the Grounder through the forest. He was still oblivious to the fact that he was being followed.
"Hold up." Bellamy whispered, putting up his hand to let us know to stop walking, "He's going into that cave."
"Should we go in?" Monroe asked quietly.
"Octavia could be in there." I pointed out. I knew it was risky to go in, but if there was a chance that my best friend was in there then I was willing to do it.
"Yeah, and so could a bunch of Grounders." Finn counter argued, pointing out the obvious threat.
Bellamy was staring at the opening of the cave, juggling the options, but it was obvious what one he would pick. "I'm going in, follow if you want." he said, beginning to walk towards the entrance.
"Bellamy, just wait." I said, grabbing a hold of his arm, "You're not going in alone okay? I'll come."
"Me too." Japser added.
"Same here." Monroe chipped in.
"Well then let's go." Finn said, motioning to the entrance.
I took a deep breath as Bellamy opened the hatch that led into the cave. I stood behind him, Finn directly behind me.
"We stay together okay? If anything happens run." Bellamy ordered, turning back to look at the remaining four of us. His eyes briefly met mine and I gave him a nod.
The door squeaked as it opened, causing me to cringe, if someone was down there they would probably hear us coming.
We stayed close together as we entered the dark cave. As we took a few steps in the sound of chains could be heard.
Bellamy must have heard them too as he turned to look back at me, "It could be her." I whispered, causing him to nod his head.
He let out a deep breath as we slowly rounded the corner, the whole cave soon coming into view. I let out a sigh of relief that I felt like I had been holding since Octavia went missing. There she was, chained to the wall, a Grounder lay beside her unconscious.
"Bellamy?" she breathed the minute her eyes landed on her brother.
"Octavia!" Bellamy exclaimed, rushing to her side.
"Get the key." she instructed as Bellamy knelt beside her. He worked quickly to free her from the chains.
"Monroe?" Bellamy called, still working to liberate Octavia, "Watch the entrance!"
As Monroe moved back towards the entrance, the rest of us walked further into the cave, Finn moving towards the Grounder, but as he got too close I grabbed his arm, "Don't go too close." I pleaded. Finn nodded as he took a step back, both of us watching as Bellamy freed Octavia, the two siblings instantly wrapping their arms around each other.
The minute they pulled apart Octavia was rushing towards me, instantly throwing her arms around me.
"Are you okay?" I whispered, sadness rushing through my body as I glanced at her face, bloody and covered in dirt.
"Yeah," she promised, lightly touching her hand to her head, "I just fell."
"How did you find me?" she asked, hugging Jasper next.
Jasper had a huge smile on his face as he happily accepted her embrace, "Followed him." he explained, pointing down to the Grounder.
"We should go," Octavia announced, "Now, before he wakes up."
"He's not gonna wake up." Bellamy shot back as he picked up a spear that was resting against the cave wall.
"Bellamy no! He didn't hurt me can we just please go?" Octavia pleaded, trying to stop her brother.
I felt an uneasy feeling wash over me, we weren't killers, we didn't need to do this. "Octavia's right Bellamy, let's just get out of here before he wakes up. No one needs to get hurt." I sided with Octavia, stepping in front of Bellamy to try and prevent him from moving any closer to the Grounder.
"They started this." Bellamy argued, lightly pushing me out of the way, only stopping when he saw Finn knelt beside the Grounder, "Finn. Move" Bellamy said sternly.
"Finn," I almost gasped, surprised he was that close to the Grounder even though I had told him minutes ago to stay away. "What are you doing? Get up."
Finn ignored me, like usual, analyzing something in his hands, "Fog horn." he said quietly.
I was about to ask him what in the world he was talking about, but I never had the chance. Before anyone even had a chance to react, the Grounder was up off the floor, driving a knife into Finn's torso, then quickly spinning around to take Bellamy off his feet.
It felt like a hand had gripped onto my throat as the breath flew from my lungs in a heat wrenching sob.
"Finn!" his name came out in a mangled cry as I rushed to his side, Octavia following after me. "Oh my God" I whispered, moving so I was cradling his head in my lap. He let out a sputtered breath as he looked up at me. "Hold on, Finn." I demanded, my body shaking with fear as I held onto my brother.
As Finn withered in pain, the Grounder and Bellamy were still engaged in a battle. But much to my dismay, the Grounder soon had Bellamy on the ground, spear to his throat."Stop!" Octavia cried, "That's my brother!"
The Grounder ignored her, pushing the spear closer and closer to Bellamy's throat as Bellamy used all his force to push the sharp metal away from him. Tears were rolling down my cheeks as I looked from Finn to Bellamy. We couldn't lose both of them, I wouldn't stand for that.
With one swift move, Jasper came to the rescue, forcefully swinging a stick across the back of the Grounder's head, rendering him unconscious once again.
Bellamy was wide eyed as he let out quick breaths, his eyes darting over to where the rest of us sat, surrounding Finn.
"Get him up!" Bellamy sprang into action, pushing himself up off the floor, "We have to get him to Clarke right away."
Octavia and Jasper pulled Finn to his feet, causing him to let out a groan. His legs were weak and he could barely hold himself up. The two of them were on either side of him, leaving me essentially useless. I let out a sob as I pushed myself off of the ground, beginning to follow them outside.
Bellamy who was still inside the cave gave my arm a squeeze, "It'll be okay." he promised.
"Please don't let him die Bellamy, I can't lose him."
