16. flares

Hours later, after dozens of trips to and from the pod back to camp, night had fallen and we were finally ready to set off the flares.

I stood beside Bellamy, Clarke on my other side. A shiver ran through me as I wrapped my arms tightened around my body in an effort to shield myself from the cool evening.

I felt Bellamy glance down at me before looking back up to the sky, "You should have worn a jacket." He commented disapprovingly.

"I'm fine." I mumbled, lowering my hands as to not give away the fact that I was cold.

He rose his brows, still looking up at the sky, "You always say that." He remarked.

"It's because it's true." I sniped back, shooting him a glare as I tried to hide the goosebumps covering my arms.

Bellamy cracked an amused smile, giving me a small nod, "Okay, Sunshine."

I rolled my eyes, tearing my attention away from Bellamy and back up to the sky where the flares were being fired. I watched in awe as they lit up the dark night sky. Raven truly was amazing.

"Do you think they'll be able to see them from up there?" Bellamy wondered, watching on with a hardened expression.

"I don't know," Clarke answered truthfully,  "I hope so."

She paused for a moment, her eyes locked on the sky before she spoke again, "Can you wish on this kind of shooting star?"

I glanced over at her, Bellamy doing the same. Both of us wore inquisitive expressions prompting Clarke to dismissively shake her head. "Forget it."

Bellamy looked back up toward the sky, "I wouldn't even know what to wish for. What about you, Sunshine?" he asked, turning to me.

I shrugged, "I'd probably wish that I had been smart enough to wear a jacket." I huffed, finally admitting that I was freezing. I could hear Bellamy let out a laugh as I all but ran back into my tent in search of warmth.

---

It had to have been the middle of the night when I was awoken by the light of a torch entering my tent. I shot up in a panic, my eyes scanning the tent trying to figure out what was happening.

When they landed on Bellamy, I felt a small jolt of panic, especially when I noted the worried expression on his features. "Bellamy, what's wrong?" I demanded, my voice thick with sleep.

He glanced over at Octavia's empty bed, "When was the last time you saw Octavia?" he questioned, his voice laced with concern.

"Uh, I don't..." I trailed off, realizing that it had been close to a day since I had seen her. With all the excitement surrounding Raven and the flares, I hadn't even noticed her absence...some best friend I am.

"I haven't seen her since the pod came down." I finally answered, knowing Bellamy was not going to be happy with my answer.

The worry on his face deepened as he turned, exiting from my tent without another word.

"Bellamy, wait!" I called, scrambling after him. He paused, turning to face me with an expression that looked a lot like fear.

"I've checked everywhere, Avery. I don't—" He let out a pitiful sigh as he shook his head. "I can't find her."

I nodded, trying to think over the last interaction I had with her, "Okay." I breathed, doing my best to stay calm when I realized he was incapable of doing so. "The last time I saw her was after you told us to wait until sunrise. She just sorta ran off. I don't know if she came back at all after that."

Guilt dripped from Bellamy's features. "She followed me." He admitted, prompting me to give him a slightly confused look. "When I went after the pod." He elaborated. "She followed me, and we got in an argument. She ran off."

I did everything I could not to let my face give way to the worry that was now completely consuming me...she could be anywhere.

"What's going on?" Clarke asked, our voices having woken her at some point.

Bellamy and I shared an exchange of nervous glances before I turned to Clarke, "We can't find Octavia."

"It's Octavia, she's probably off chasing butterflies." Clarke dismissed our concerns.

I flinched slightly at her easy dismissal. "Octavia wouldn't have missed everything that happened today by her own volition." I argued, knowing I was right. There was no way Octavia would have sat out of the work we did today.

"I've checked the whole camp, Clarke, she's not here." Bellamy added.

Clarke's demeanor instantly changed when she realized we weren't exaggerating our concern. "Okay, I'll help you guys find her." She promised. "Let's check again. You two go to the the drop ship, I'll check the tents again."

"Thank you." Bellamy sighed.

"Don't thank me, I'm not doing this for you, I'm doing it for Octavia." Clarke muttered before breaking apart from us to search the tents.

Bellamy and I stayed mostly silent as we searched the Dropship until I spoke, "I can't believe I didn't realize she was gone."

Bellamy stopped what he was doing to look me in the eyes, "It's not your fault. You're not in charge of her, I am."

I paused, looking over at him. "Bellamy, I don't think anyone is really in charge of her, I mean— "

"— I made a promise to her when she was born that I would never let anything happen to her. I've already let her down once, I'm not letting it happen again."

I kept my eyes locked with his. He was serious about protecting her, he would do anything for his sister.

"She's not here." Clarke concluded as she entered the drop ship, confirming Bellamy's earlier statement.

"Okay," Bellamy announced, walking towards the exit of the ship, "We need to get everybody up, get a search party started. Avery, gather up the weapons and bring them to the middle of camp, Clarke start getting everyone up."

Clarke and I followed his orders, her moving back towards the camp as I moved towards our "armoury". I gathered as many weapons as I could, bringing them to the centre of camp and dumping them onto the ground.

"Hey everybody! Gather around and grab a weapon" Bellamy instructed to those who were up and ready to go. "My sister has been out there alone for twelve hours. Arm up, we're not coming back without her."

I clutched onto the knife Bellamy had given me on the day we were hunting. I had held onto it ever since and I wasn't planning on giving it up.

"Nice choice." A quite voice said from next to me.

I turned to see Jasper standing beside me, a small smile on his face.

I open my mouth in awe, surprised to see him out here.

"Jasper," Clarke said cutting in, "You don't have to do this, you haven't left camp since we brought you back"

"Clarke," Jasper sighed, his smile fading, "I have to do this."

"We need all of the people we can get." Bellamy confirmed, dismissing Clarke's concerns.

Jasper nodded, his face as pale as a ghost as he walked away. The poor kid was terrified, and rightfully so.

"We'll need a tracker." Bellamy announced, his head turning towards me, "Where's your brother."

I pointed towards his tent where him and Raven were. I was shocked that Finn wasn't already out here, and truthfully, I did not want to know what they were going in there.

"Finn, get out here!" Bellamy yelled.

When Finn didn't come out immediately, Bellamy turned to me. "Can you go get him?"

I scrunched up my face, shaking my head. "Absolutely not."

Bellamy shot me a look before raising his voice once again. "Finn, let's go! We're leaving!"

"I'm coming!" Finn yelled as he exited his tent, jogging towards the group with what appeared to be a brand new haircut. Apparently that's what they had been doing in there...thankfully.

He didn't come up from with the rest of us, but rather stopped near the back to speak with Clarke, most like about the whole girlfriend coming down from space thing.

I milled near the front of the group beside Jasper as we waited for everyone to be ready to go.

"You okay?" I questioned, my eyes trained on his worried face.

"Uh, yeah I'm just—" he stuttered, cutting himself off before he could finish.

"I get it." I assured with a small smile,  "But don't worry Jasper, we'll be fine okay? If not I can protect us." I joked, lifting up my arm to show my muscles, or rather lack there of. This caused a laugh from Jasper's mouth.

Jasper's laughter soon melded with the sound of shocked gasps, everyone in camp looking up to the sky. "Wow, look at that!"

I looked up to see what looked like dozens of falling stars littering the dark night sky.

"They didn't work." Raven announced in defeat, emerging from her tent, "They didn't see the flares!"

"A meteor shower tells you that?" Bellamy asked skeptically.

"That's not a meteor shower. It's a funeral." Clarke corrected coldly. "Hundreds of bodies being returned to the Earth from the Ark. This is what it looks like from the other side. They didn't get out message"

I felt like I was going to throw up as I looked back up into the sky. Those were people. People who had lost their lives so others could live. A shiver ran through my body as quiet murmurs flew through camp.

"This is all because of you!" Raven screamed, stomping towards Bellamy.

Bellamy didn't waver, "I helped you find the radio!" He shot back in what appeared to be anger...but I could tell guilt was hidden within his expression.

"Yeah, after you yanked it from my pod and trashed it!" Raven shot back as Finn and Clarke pulled her away from him.

"Yeah, he knows, and now he has to live with it." Clarke said calmly, in attempts to diffuse the situation.

Bellamy looked back up at the sky before returning his gaze to the group, "All I know is that my sister is out there and I'm going to find her. You coming or what?"

"Yeah." Finn answered softly.

"Well then what are we waiting for!" Bellamy yelled to the whole group, "Move out!" he called, turning and walking towards the forrest, the bulk of the group following him.

Jasper, Finn, Clarke and I didn't move immediately, our minds still focused on the people from the Ark.

"We have to talk to them." Clarke pointed out, "Three hundred is not enough, the oxygen level will just keep dropping. If we don't tell them that they can survive down here they'll kill more people, they have to."

"Guys," Jasper said sadly, "They're leaving, come on we have to go."

Finn nodded as he turned to Raven, "I've got to do this, and you should stay here and fix the radio."

"Fix it?" Raven asked in shock, "The transmission's smashed, unless there's a parts depot down here that I don't know about, we're not speaking to the Ark."

A look of realization spread onto Clarke's face, "Art supplies store." she said, causing Finn's face to fall slightly. Raven and I watched them in confusion.

"I might know a place where you can get a transmission." she announced, turning to Raven.

"Great," Raven said slowly, "Then it looks like you're coming with me."

"Finn, Avery? I don't want to find her without you guys." Jasper said softly.

"We're coming Jasper." I promised, walking towards him to give his hand a squeeze. Finn looked at Raven and Clarke, "Be careful." he ordered, before turning to walk towards Jasper and I.

"Hey!" Raven called, grabbing him by his sleeve before pulling him towards her with a kiss, "I love you."

I watched Clarke shift uncomfortably as Finn hesitated, "I love you too."

And then he was beside Jasper and I, the three of us rushing to catch up to the rest of the group.
