03. mount weather
Chapter Song- Jungle by X The Ambassadors and Jamie N Commons
Teenagers full of excitement and apprehension milled around the Drop Ship, taking in the brand new views.
I, myself, stood in a certain awe, taking in the new scenery. For my entire life, I had seen only the inside of my family's quarters and the confines of the Skybox, meaning that this was a welcomed sight for me. While I knew survival wasn't guaranteed down here, neither was death.
Breathing in the fresh air, I closed my eyes and titled my head back slightly, allowing the warm rays of sun to soak into my skin.
As I finally opened my eyes, I noted that someone was watching me. But it wasn't just anyone...it was Octavia's brother.
I met his eyes, and for a moment the two of us just stared at each other, neither one of us willing to be the first to break eye contact.
Before either of us made the choice to look away, a commotion from in front of the Drop Ship grabbed everyone's attention, mine and Bellamy's undeclared staring contest being called off.
"Relax, we're just trying to find out where we are." The Chancellor's son, Wells, defended to a pale boy with dark hair.
Bellamy was the one to address Wells. "We're on Earth, isn't that good enough for you?"
"We need to find Mount Weather." Wells explained taking a few steps closer to Bellamy. "You heard my father's message, that's got to be our first priority."
I found myself instantly moving toward my best friend among the threat of chaos. I had a sneaking suspicion this was not going to end well.
"Screw your father." Octavia snapped, causing me to wince slightly. She always spoke her mind...I'll give her that.
A shocked expression soon overcame Wells' face, prompting Octavia to continue. "What you think you're in charge here?" she sneered, nodding over to Clarke. "You and your little princess?"
I shifted slightly as everyone turned to look at Octavia, which subsequently caused me to fall under their stares.
"Do you think we care who's in charge?" Clarke spat "We need to get to Mount Weather, not because the Chancellor said so but because the longer we wait, the hungrier we'll get and the harder this will be."
She was met with silence, causing her to continue on. "How long do you think we'll last without those supplies? We're looking at a 20 mile trek, Okay? So if we want to get there before dark we need to leave. Now."
After finishing her little speech, Clarke looked around at the group of us in expectation, waiting for agreement.
But she didn't get that. Instead, Bellamy let out a laugh from beside me, causing me to turn and look at him in confusion. What the hell was so funny?
"I got a better idea." he proposed, crossing his arms over his chest. "You two go. Find it for us. Let the privileged do the hard work for a change."
Cheers of agreement rang off amongst the group in response to Bellamy's suggestion. Octavia grinned over at her brother, meanwhile I remained silent.
I wasn't really sure who's side I was on here. While I'm sure Clarke was right in that we needed to get to Mount Weather in order to find our next meal, I wasn't so sure all of us needed to go.
"You're not listening." Wells argued. "We all need to go."
The pale boy from before stepped forward, shoving Wells from behind with a smirk. "Look at this, everybody. Chancellor of Earth."
"You think that's funny?" Wells demanded, taking a step toward the boy.
Pale boy didn't answer, but instead lunged forward and kicked Wells' leg out from under him, sending him crashing to the ground.
I felt myself wince slightly as a grunt left Wells' mouth, clearly indicative that he had been injured.
"Oh, but that was." The boy taunted.
"Wells!" Clarke gasped, attempting to rush forward. However, she was quickly held back by some of the other boys.
"Come on, guys!" I yelled. "Is this really what we need to be doing?"
"Oh, come on Aves." Octavia mumbled, shooting me a grin as she bumped her hip into mine. "It's just a little fun."
Bellamy rose his brows at me in amusement before looking back to the scene. Letting out a flustered sigh, I did the same.
Wells was shakily back on his feet by this point, the group egging him on as he prepared to fight the other boy.
I shook my head as I crossed my arms across my chest...boys and their egos.
Before the fight could ensue, a figure dropped down from the Drop Ship, landing in between the two boys.
A small grin came to my lips when I realized that it was my brother, come to save the day.
"The kid's got one leg." Finn pointed out to the dark haired boy. "How bout you wait until it's a fair fight?"
The boy glared at Finn, but didn't press the issue any further, someone I was relieved over.
"Hey Spacewalker!" Octavia called, stepping away from Bellamy and I. "Rescue me next."
I rolled my eyes as I watched my best friend flirt with my twin brother.
"You got a problem with him?" A deep voice asked from beside me. Upon turning slightly, I noticed that Bellamy was watching me, awaiting my answer.
I let out a small laugh. "Got about a million." I muttered, and upon Bellamy's confused look, elaborated. "He's my brother-my twin." I explained.
"Twin?" Bellamy asked, almost sounding shocked.
"What? Never heard of a two kid family?" I joked. Bellamy didn't seem to find the joke very funny, as he gave me an odd look before turning away.
I shrugged to myself, at least I though it was funny.
Ignoring Bellamy's sour mood, I sought out my brother who had disappeared from the crowd.
I found him by the back of the Drop Ship, seemingly on a mission.
"Spacewalker saves the day." I mocked, stopping beside him with a grin.
My brother rolled his eyes at me as he shook his head. "Don't call me that."
I feigned confusion. "Everyone else seems to call you that."
"Well, you don't get to." he murmured, his eyes roaming the ground for something.
"Are you ever going to tell me how you got that nickname?" I wondered, realizing I had missed a lot of my brother's life in the past three years.
Finn looked up at me with a small smile. "Someday." he promised. "But you have to tell me everything you've been up to in the past three years."
I rose my brows as if to say yeah right. "That won't take long." I muttered.
When a comfortable silence fell across the two of us, I looked back to the group for a moment, my eyes landing on Wells' who was nursing his ankle.
"Good job saving Wells' ass, Finn." I enunciated the lack of the name 'Space Walker.'
He shrugged, his eyes still scouring the ground. "That other kid's an ass. Someone had to put him in his place."
As soon as the words left his mouth, a satisfied grin came to his lips as he bent down, scooping up a sharp rock .
"What are you doing?" I inquired.
He looked up at me with a devious smile as he began prying at the wristband on his arm. "Trying to get this damn thing off."
I grabbed his arm, stopping him from going any further. "Why would you do that?"
He let out a sigh as he dropped the rock, giving me a steady look. "We don't owe them anything up there. You know that, right?"
I fell silent for a moment before giving a small nod. "Yeah, I know. It's just..."
Finn threw his arm around my shoulder and pulled me close to him. "Don't worry." he ordered. "Let's go find Clarke and see what the hell the plan is."
I gave a small nod, nervously shoving my hands into my pocket as we made our way back to the entrance of the Drop Ship.
"So, Mount Weather. When do we leave?" Finn questioned as the two of us approached Clarke and Wells.
Clarke instantly stood up, turning away from Wells. "Right now."
She looked back to Wells who was seated on the ramp, clearly immobile. "We'll be back tomorrow with food." she advised.
"How are the two of you going to carry food for a hundred?" he questioned, looking between Clarke and my brother.
"Three of us!" I piped, stepping out from behind Finn with a grin.
Wells gave me a skeptical look. "Okay, fine... how are the three of you gonna carry it all?"
Finn turned around and grabbed the closest two boys, pulling them into our small group.
I smiled when I realized it was Jasper and Monty. In the few times Octavia and I were allowed in social setting, Jasper and Monty were the life of the party.
"Five of us." Finn declared, Jasper and Monty looking confused for a moment before shrugging. "Can we go now?"
"Sounds like a party, make it six!" Octavia said cheerfully as she sauntered into our group.
I gave my best friend a grin, which earned a wink back from her.
"Hey, what the hell are you doing?" Bellamy demanded, coming up behind his younger sister and grabbing onto her.
"Going for a walk." Octavia replied, turning back to the group without looking at Bellamy.
"Hey," Clarke said ignoring Bellamy and Octavia's disagreement. "Were you trying to take that off?" she asked pointing to Finn's wristband.
My brother shrugged. "Yeah. So?
"So," Clarke began, "This wristband transmits your vital signs to the ark. Take it off and they'll think you're dead."
"Should I care?" Finn challenged.
"Well I don't know," Clarke retorted. "Do you want the people you love to think you're dead? Do you want them to follow you down here in two months, cause they won't if they think we're dying "
Finn shrugged looking over at me. "I already have my family down here."
-----
I walked alongside Octavia and Finn. I took in my surroundings as we trekked deeper into the forest. It was truly breathtaking.
My bliss was ruined when I caught sight of Finn picking a flower before delicately placing it into Octavia's hair.
"That, my friend is game." Jasper said from behind me.
"That, my friend is disgusting." I grumbled.
"That, my friend is poison sumac." Monty correct.
A loud laugh fell from my lips as Octavia aggressively swatted the flower from her hair.
She turned to me with a furious expression. "Real nice, Aves."
"The flowers aren't poisonous. Medicinal actually, calming." Monty further explained.
"His family grows all the pharmaceuticals on the ark." Jasper said after noticing everyone's slightly shocked expressions.
"Hey guys! Would you try and keep up." Clarke called from up ahead.
"Come on Clarke, how do you block all of this out?" Finn asked.
"Well it's simple." She explained. "I wonder why haven't we seen any animals yet? Maybe it's because there are none, maybe we've already been exposed to enough radiation to kill us!" she explained. "Sure is pretty though." she added before turning around.
"Someone should slip her some poison sumac." Octavia mumbled. I laughed, Monty and Jasper laughed, but Octavia didn't seem to care, she was more disappointed by the lack of Finn's laugh.
"I've gotta know what you two did to get busted." Finn asked Monty and Jasper as the five of us followed behind Clarke.
"Sumac's not the only herb in the garden." Monty said.
"Someone forgot to replace what we took." Jasper added.
"I apologized like a thousand times." Monty defended.
"What about you Octavia, what'd they get you for?" Jasper asked.
Octavia clenched her jaw. "Being born." she answered before jogging up to catch up with Clarke.
"Oh." Jasper whispered awkwardly.
"What about you Avery?" he asked trying to lighten the mood.
I laughed as I gave him an apologetic look, my answer wasn't any better than her's. "Same as her."
"You're a second child too?" he asked in shock.
Finn chuckled from beside me. "We're twins Jasper." he announced.
"Oh my God, that's freaking awesome!" Jasper mused. "You know I once read that twins can communicate telepathically."
I looked over at my twin brother, both of us stifling a laugh. "It's not a thing Jasper." I admitted, probably crushing his hopes. "Unless you count us being insanely good at charades."
Jasper shrugged, seemingly somewhat content with my answer. I gave him a grin before focusing back on the walk.
As I did so, my eyes focused on Clarke and Octavia who were both waving us forward.
I shared a look with the boys before running over to the girls, kneeling down beside them. Clarke held a finger to her mouth, signalling for us to be quiet.
I craned my neck to see what was going on.
A surprised gasp tumbled from my lips when I spotted what we were supposed to be looking at. It was an animal in the clearing-a live one. I recognized it to be a deer.
"No animals huh?" Finn teased Clarke before taking a step closer, his foot accidentally snapping a twig. When the deer heard the noise it turned it's head causing me to stumble back with a gasp.
"Oh my god."
