Chapter 4

I stood in the living room and waited for the person whose car rolled into the driveway to enter the house.

A few moments later I heard a key entering the door and a girl with a black ponytail walked in. I watched her kick her shoes off at the door and throw herself onto the couch face down.

I laughed at the scene in front of me and wondered who she was. I didn't get the same nauseating feeling from her as I got from the intruder. Her phone began ringing and with a groan, she answered it.

"Mom where are you?" She asked.

"The store, Lizzie." I recognized my mother's voice on the other side of the telephone and I stared at the girl on the couch.

She had to be my sister.

My head began throbbing again and I fell to the floor as another memory surfaced.

I marched into my big sister's room and glared at her when I saw her using my computer.

"I have been looking for this thing," I snapped. "Do you know how to ask for permission?" I slammed my computer closed and she raised her middle finger at me.

"I'm your big sister. It's my job," she said.

"I hate you," I spat and she responded with a loud shriek of laughter.

Her laugh was always contagious and incredibly funny to listen to and I found myself trying to hold back my laughter.

"I'm sorry for not asking to use your computer."

I rolled my eyes at her knowing she would do the same thing tomorrow. "Yeah, whatever."

Her phone pinged and she picked it up to look at it and fear painted her features for a quick moment.

"Fucking creep," she muttered under her breath.

"Lizzie. What's wrong?" I asked.

"Nothing. I've just been getting weird texts," she admitted.

I frowned and crossed my arms. "From who?"

"Some weirdo on Instagram," she scoffed as she turned her phone to my face. I looked at the profile picture of a person in a white mask and the username was Bat3man_.

"Maybe I should give them your account so they can stop bothering me," she said with a small laugh.

"Yeah, I'm going to pass on that," I said.

My eyes widened in horror as I recalled the memory.

Bat3man...Bateman.

I gasped as I made the connection. It couldn't be a coincidence that the creep who was texting my sister had a similar name to the alias of my killer.

I stood up quickly and looked around the room. If this person was strong enough to kill me, they could hurt my sister.

I wanted to do something, anything to warn her but I couldn't. I attempted to knock down a few items but nothing was working. I had used all my energy trying to open the locked door that now I could do nothing but sit. I sobbed into my hands as I realized that if my sister got hurt I would be completely helpless.

I turned my attention back to my Lizzie who was still on the phone.

"Lizzie make sure to lock the doors, close all the windows, and-"

"Mom, I know. I did," she said exasperatedly.

No, you didn't.

I looked back at the door where the person had left out of and it was still unlocked. I screamed at her to lock the door but my cries fell into the void that was Purgatory.

I walked to the kitchen door and tried to close it but it was useless. My hand fell through the door and I couldn't grasp anything.

How am I supposed to get energy? Can I even sleep? If I can, do I want to?

I was supposed to be here to solve my death, not prevent someone else's. But I couldn't just let my family die and I refused to watch them get hurt.

I sat in a chair in front of the kitchen door for what felt like hours. My sister had fallen asleep on the couch and I made it my job to watch the unlocked door.

I sat here building up my energy just waiting for someone to come so I could lock it. I didn't even know if it would work but I had no other choice. My mother still wasn't home and it was 8 pm now, making it 3 hours since she left.

I hope she's okay.

I felt myself drift off to sleep but my head snapped up when I heard the rustling of leaves outside. I stood up from the chair and glanced out of the kitchen window and I saw the black figure standing there and I let out an involuntary scream.

I stood in my spot paralyzed with fear and I began shaking.

They can't hurt you if you're already dead.

I repeated the mantra several times in my head as I watched the person watch my sister sleep through the window.

I took a step towards the window to try to get a better look at who the person was but it was useless. The shadow from their hoodie covered their face and I couldn't make out any features.

I watched the person watch Lizzie for a few minutes until they stepped away from the window. I ran to the window and tried to see where they went but they were gone.

Taking a step away from the window, I scanned the kitchen when I suddenly remembered.

The kitchen door!

I looked towards it and saw the silhouette of a person on the other side. I watched the doorknob slowly twist open and I gathered up all my strength and threw myself against the door.

A rush of adrenaline ran through me when my body made contact with the glass on the door. Thank God. I quickly used the last of the energy I had to lock the door and I fell to the floor.

I heard the rattle of the doorknob and I tensed as I sobbed into my hands. The rattling stopped a few moments later and I let out a sigh of relief.

If the person managed to get in, there would've been nothing I could do to stop them.

I slowly stood up from the floor and took a few breaths to relax. I walked over to where my sister was sleeping and shook my head at her. Her soft snores filled the room as she slept peacefully.

If only you knew what happened as you slept.

I sat down at the table in front of the couch and let my head fall into my hands.

Thud.

My head snapped towards the sound.

It came from upstairs.

I suddenly wondered if my sister had locked all the windows upstairs. But judging from her carelessness with the door, I had a feeling she didn't.

I heard footsteps coming from the second level of the house and I stood up slowly. I made my way down the dark corridor to the stairs and at the top, I saw the figure of the same person in black. They were walking slowly to make sure they didn't make any noise but I hoped they would so my sister would wake up.

What do I do?!!

Creak.

The stair let out a small whimper when the large foot stepped onto it. They froze and as did I, awaiting their next steps.

I ran towards my sister who was still sleeping on the couch and looked for anything I could do to help her but came up empty. I felt completely powerless and terrified as I thought of my sister ending up with the same fate I had.

I heard the figure reach the bottom of the stairs with a loud creak from the wooden floor. The sound was so loud that my sister stirred in her sleep.

I looked back at the corridor and saw the person who was now taking more cautious steps. They put their hand in their pocket and slowly pulled out something silver that glistened in the moonlit room.

It was a knife.

My eyes widened as I looked at it and I looked back frantically at my sister.

I began screaming and sobbing as loud as I could but it was pointless. My sister was going to die. In my last attempt to save her, I gathered all my strength and threw myself onto her.

She sat up from the couch with a loud groan and looked around. Her eyes landed on the person in the corridor and she screamed and shot up from the couch, running for the door.

The person quit their efforts at remaining quiet and lunged for my sister, grabbing her. I tried to push and claw at the person but my hands went through their body.

Lizzie managed to kick the person and they stumbled backward. She took the chance to leave and quickly unlocked the front door and ran out.

The person steadied themselves as they stood directly in front of me now and for a second I could have sworn they could see me but they remained still.

I looked up at their face expecting to identify them but they were wearing a plain white mask.

Shit.

I studied their build and height completely and looked at their hands and shoes. I didn't know anything about the person or who they were but at least now I had one clue.

It was definitely a man.
