Chapter 10

"Do it again." He commanded softly as he looked in my direction.

I hesitantly reached my hand back to his head and ran my hand through his curly mane. I watched as he shivered under my touch.

Goosebumps appeared on his skin and he shook himself and made a noise as if he was disgusted.

Ouch. I frowned at his reaction and moved the chair to get up.

"Wait." He said. "It was just strange. To not be able to see someone touching you. But I wasn't disgusted or something." He rubbed the back of his neck nervously and looked back down at the notepad.

Satisfied with his response I sat back down and picked up the pen.

'It's fine.'

He smiled at what I wrote and nodded.

"Don't answer if it makes you uncomfortable...but how did you die?"

If I actually knew the answer then I would've been extremely uncomfortable. But I knew nothing, therefore I didn't feel much except anger at the situation I was in now.

'If I knew I'd tell you. I just know I was killed.'

He furrowed his brows and shook his head. "By who?"

'That is what I'm here to figure out.'

He froze at my response and looked around his room. I supposed I must've scared him. I leaned back into the paper and clarified so I could subdue his worries.

'No need to worry. I think you will be safe.'

"I'm glad you think so." He teased as he smiled my way.

We spent the next few hours communicating by way of paper and I laughed harder than I had ever...well laughed harder than anytime I could recall.

Carter spent most of the night talking about the many books he had read and asked me questions about my likes and dislikes. Luckily for me there was never a dull moment in our conversation.

Anytime I saw him drifting off to sleep I would poke his cheek and he would immediately jolt awake and fix his glasses.

I did just that a few minutes ago and he crossed his arms in frustration.

"You're a pretty annoying ghost, Janelle." He muttered.

I frowned at him and threw a crumpled piece of paper at his head.

To my surprise and disappointment even though he was extremely tired, his impulses were on point.

He caught the paper before it could hit his face and he clicked his tongue. "It's hard to believe you're seventeen."

I was confused as to what he meant at first but I realized he must've been talking about my actions. I didn't think I was immature but I didn't really care what he thought. I knew the circumstances would be majorly different if he could see me but my invisibility was accompanied with a shield of boldness.

He looked at his watch and groaned as he leaned his head against his chair. "It's 7am, Janelle. You kept me up all night."

The pen at that moment was calling my name and I quickly picked it up and scribbled a response:

'You enjoyed every second of it. But don't worry, after today you will no longer have to put up with me.'

He read the paper and frowned. "No, I would like to see you again. Well n- not see per se. But I had fun and I would like for you to visit me again. Whenever you'd like, of course."

My cheeks flushed at his words and I bit my lips to conceal a smile. I decided that this would be a good a time as any to tease him a bit.

'We'll see. For all you know I may never leave.'

His eyes widened at my response at his cheeks became red. "Please, be sure to let me know when you're here. I tend to get dressed in this room and..." He squirmed in his seat and rubbed his neck nervously. "It would be weird if you watched...and I didn't know."

"Oh really?" I said to myself as I brought then pen down to the paper again.

'So it wouldn't be weird if I watched and you knew?'

He began coughing at my response and shook his head. "That's not what I meant I-"

I bring my finger to his lips to shush him and laughed as his eyes widened.

"That is still so creepy." He whispered.

I looked at the clock on the table and saw that it was past seven in the morning. I needed to leave so I could say goodbye to my sister. She was supposed to be leaving but I didn't know exactly what time so I wanted to be extra early.

This was going to be the last time I saw her before I passed on. I couldn't miss it.

I moved the chair back and Carter's eyes moved to it. When I stood up I moved back to the paper and left him one final note.

'See you around Carter Grey.'

He smirked at the message and crossed his arms as he swiveled in his chair. "Bye, Janelle."
